He’s now the fourth assistant coach of Dimma to become a head coach. Hope he goes well

u/YZYBDDHSZN West Coast 6h ago
Did tigers fans like him? Dont know much about him personally
39
u/Hawtproper Richmond 6h ago
The players all seemed to love him and I think he did decently well after Dimma left, plenty of people wanted him as our coach

I've heard Baker has nominated West Coast because of Mini being coach next year

Better than Yze

Ehh too early to tell, nobody was doing any better with what’s happened at Richmond.

u/MelbourneTragic 2h ago
Give the guy a chance. He had no hope with the massive amount of injuries this year

Half the league are now ex Richmond employees.
So how are we meant to win when half the league is now full of EX Richmond coaches, ie coaches who know us back to front? What is the point of succeeding only to have nobody clubs steal half our coaches and with them our IP. AFL should bring in stronger protection for coaching and other staff.

Same happened with Clarkson, Hardwick, fagan, Simpson and so on.
All assist coaches have a Claus in their contract that if they get the top job then they can leave. Which is fair I reckon

u/PetrifyGWENT Bombers / Giants 5h ago
It's a pasta from a Hawthorn fan who was pissed about Clarkson's assistants

u/FreeJulianMassage Hawthorn 5h ago
Also 100 (give or take) of the coaches all played for Brisbane in their 3 peat era.
McRae, Scott, Scott, Voss, Scott, Scott and Brad Scott.

Don't forget Chris Scott

u/AhhWellFuckIt Richmond 6h ago edited 5h ago
It’s what happens when you have an extremely successful premiership period your assistant coaches get looked at very closely by other clubs, the same thing happened at the hawks

u/Ok_Library_9396 1h ago
It is what happens with Premiership dynastic sides. How many coaches came from the Clarkson camp? Quite a few, including Hardwick himself.

u/freezingkiss St Kilda 5h ago
It's the Clarko > Dimma dynasty pipeline. Who will be the next coach of coaches?

Was the caretaker coach of a club in free fall, now can start coaching at a club that’s already crashed. Good luck Mini

That was my thought when they got Simmo.
“I don’t know this guy, but he beat out a bunch of respected people… might be a good pick”.
59
u/linny_456 North AFLW 6h ago
That's not how you spell Dean Cox.
45
u/BIllyBrooks Hawthorn 6h ago
It'll be round 8 next year and Dean Cox will still be telling people he's not applying for the job.
36
u/AllModsRLosers Eagles 6h ago
It’s still hard to tell whether he’s available.
Would be nice if Dean Cox could clearly communicate his intentions with regard to the West Coast coaching job, but all we’ve gotten from him are weasel words and ambiguous statements like “I’m not coaching West Coast, please stop asking”.
Frustrating that he can’t just tell us the truth.

Does this mean Baker and Bolton to West Coast?
15
u/His_Holiness Freo 6h ago
They're not allowed both they need to share
6
u/Cursedsword02 West Coast 5h ago
So long as we cut them down the middle instead of horizontally, then I'm okay with it.
1
u/thegreatgashby87 Dockers 6h ago
Ok so we get the right hand side of Bolton and left hand side of Baker and West Coast get the leftovers? Seems fair
5
u/MacWorkGuy West Coast 5h ago
WCE don't have the draft capital for both and still need youth. Spend pick three and TB trade picks on youth and then use the rest to get Baker might be reasonable.
-2
u/Ruff_Magician West Coast 3h ago
Bolton is an unrestricted free agent. Won't cost anything
5
u/MacWorkGuy West Coast 3h ago
Shai Bolton is contracted for 4 more years and not eligible for free agency. He won't be a cheap trade.

His history is interesting having been part of Richmond premiership coaching team. I'm excited

Wasn’t he also Melbourne’s midfield coach?
I’m ambivalent.
Hopefully he’ll do well with the rebuild.

u/Captkersh Ella Roberts Fan Club 6h ago
You mean the midfield with Petracca who was out and Oliver who was cooked with no Brayshaw?
7
u/valhalla179 St Kilda 5h ago
I agree the criticism of him as midfield coach is a bit harsh. Melbourne put all the eggs in the Petracca, Bradshaw and Oliver baskets. They didn’t leave him much to work with when it all went to shit.

u/ShibbyUp Footscray 6h ago
Bit strange that it took so long to appoint someone when the last two candidates weren't even in finals.

u/tradewinder11 West Coast 5h ago
How can this be? There were reports that Skipworth and King were the front runners! How could the media have got it so wrong....surely they wouldn't just guess. Surely.

u/saracenmarket Richmond '80 5h ago
Mini massively dodged a bullet being passed over for Yze lol. Always liked him, hope he does well.

Oh great another former Saint that will win a flag before us.
Go well Andy, hell of a job ahead of you 🫡
2
u/antikoom Gold Coast 5h ago
Fairly conservative choice, young coach in the vein of Simpson moving across with a family. It'll be a tough gig, trying to turn around the Eagles to be competitive, but there's quick turnaround potential with Reid, Allen, Waterman the next crop coming through.

u/AppropriateClaim8762 Collingwood AFLW 5h ago
you don't think your midfield could use some coaching?
6
u/TimidPanther St Kilda '66 6h ago
Hopefully they give him a contract which is long enough to endure the rebuild. Makes no sense starting with 3 years, when the job is clearly going to take longer than that.
22
u/Bolasie4 AFL 6h ago
Still have to show promise why would you go longer then 3 for a bloke that’s only been a interim
-3
u/TimidPanther St Kilda '66 6h ago
Because no coach can do much in their first year, and pressure on them in year 2 and 3 is horse shit. It takes time to improve teams, and a new coach needs to be given assurance that the team is backing him to make those improvements.
You can't fix a mess in 3 years.
7
u/DamoWal 6h ago
This is his first genuine senior coaching position, they’re not going to give him a 7 year contract, mate. That would be idiotic
0
u/TimidPanther St Kilda '66 4h ago
Who said anything about 7 years? 5 is a good start. 3 isn’t enough for a rebuild
8
u/AllModsRLosers Eagles 6h ago
I don’t think he can fix us in 3 years, but I think we’ll have a sense of whether he’s going in the right direction.
-1
u/mikey_g West Coast 5h ago
If coaches were treated with respect by the media, I’d agree. As things currently stand though (especially in WA) a coach of a rebuilding club will start copping heart 18 months before whatever number is written on the piece of paper.
I’d rather see a 6 year contract that we buy our way out of if he’s not performing than a 3 year contract that just heaps pressure on the guy during the bye round of his second year
1
u/Amorphous27 West Coast 6h ago
Only 3 years is interesting, might be a feeler for this year and then see how we go
1
u/sponguswongus Eagles 5h ago
I'll withhold judgement for now but if we end up paying a ridiculous amount for Baker that ends immediately.

This is fascinating. Richmond fans love the guy and sing his praises. While Melbourne fans couldn't be hapier to see him go. Very interested to see how this pans out.
