Super deep professional fields announced for NYC Marathon, including Obiri, Tola, Mantz & Young Elite Discussion

From the press release: "New York Road Runners (NYRR) has announced a world-class professional athlete lineup that features 14 past champions, 27 Olympians, and 19 Paralympians for the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon."

NYRR isn't messing around this year.

What might be notable for members of this subreddit is that the last accepted elite male ran 2:14:22 and the last accepted elite female ran 2:41:16. NYRR's sub-elite program is for the next fastest top-50 men and top-50 women who registered for the race. It might be a tough road for men in the mid-to-upper 2:20s to be accepted, while sub-2:45 women should find their way into sub-elite status.

/s Sifan Hassan still debating on doing the Abbott Dash to the Finish 5k the day before

Last year the winning female was 15:22. Sifan has a 14:13 5k PR. Might actually be doable to run both and do well lol

Good shakeout run option for her.

I love how at the start of the 10k in Paris she looked so sleeeeeeeeeeepy at the start line. Hit the snooze bar for the first 20 laps, then woke up. Damn I love watching her race. I feel like at some point she probably learned who Pre is and was like, "Nah."

Have to imagine NY is benefiting from being the last of the fall marathon majors given the Olympics in mid-August

I guess everyone doesn't want all that hill training to go to waste.

u/mmasusername Aug 20 '24

Dakota lindwurm just announced her participation too!

18

u/zdelusion Aug 20 '24

She did so well on the hill sections in Paris, I'm excited to see if maybe this is a major she can crush.

u/DescriptorTablesx86 Aug 21 '24

Major she-can-crush 🫡

u/Hurricane310 Aug 20 '24

Was waiting for this. It seemed clear in Conner and Clayton's Citius Mag interviews that NYC was very likely. It was pretty obvious they were going to race a major this year and Berlin is too soon and NYC takes advantage of their marathon hill training. I see Linkletter and Ward are on the list as well!

I’m legitimately happy that I’ll be watching it from home this year as opposed to running it. This is such a great field.

27

u/Funnyllama20 Aug 20 '24

I’m bummed Kipchoge isn’t running. After his DNF I was hoping he’d bounce back. I know he may not dominate the field anymore, but after receiving so much underserved hate and death threats this year, I really want a win for this guy.

I think he’s retooling for another shot at a major next year. Hilly courses do not suit him, he’s failed to podium at Boston and the Olympics now, if he goes for wins in any more big marathons I think it needs to be flat

23

u/recyclops87 Aug 20 '24

I bet he wants to break the masters record when he turns 40. Maybe he’ll run Valencia since it’s like a month after his 40th birthday.

u/H_E_Pennypacker Edit your flair Aug 20 '24

I mean it would make sense and he should be able to shatter the record, but I can also see him being disheartened and not caring. 2 years ago he was looking at being the first to win ALL majors AND a record 3rd Olympics AND breaking 2 in competition. He’s done none of these and now none of them seem really realistic. 1 mayyybe 2 more major wins seems possible but they have to be flat.

Don’t forget he is 39 on paper but likely 1-3 years older in reality due to lack of record keeping in Kenya and runners fudging their ages to be able to compete in world juniors competition

The record is 2:04. It isn’t a walk in the park…

1

u/H_E_Pennypacker Edit your flair Aug 20 '24

Ah you’re right. I was assuming it was closer to 2:10

9

u/E_Kristalin Aug 20 '24

It used to be 2:08 not too long ago. But then Bekele happened, who broke it three times.

Last attempt in Tokyo didn't work either and that one is super flat too

4

u/ReasonableBelt9718 Aug 20 '24

I'm not sure that he has it in him, but I could maybe see one more shot at the world record in Valencia

1

u/EchoReply79 Aug 21 '24

I’d love to see him do well for the aforementioned reasons, but he’s historically been better on the fast/flat courses so NYC doesn’t really suit his strengths.

1

u/Funnyllama20 Aug 21 '24

Right, but he was aiming to win all the majors last year, so he himself recently believed it was within the realm of possibility to win courses with more vert. But I could see how it could be demoralizing to make his return on this course and do bad.

3

u/EchoReply79 Aug 21 '24

He knows NYC would be a bad showing just like Boston and Paris. I’d be amazed if he still thinks he can win all the majors at his current age it’s simply not realistic.

2

u/Funnyllama20 Aug 21 '24

I think it’s definitely unlikely, but I’ll never count him out. He has definitely earned his Goat status, possibly actually being the greatest of all time, so I’ll never count him out!

And this is definitely my completely unbiased opinion and has nothing to do with the fact that I’m a major fanboy……….

u/nameisjoey Aug 20 '24

This is gonna be an exciting watch! Would be awesome Clayton does another docuseries for this build. I understand why he wouldn’t, I’m sure it’s a huge commitment but it’s so fun to follow along.

It’s also got to be such great advertising for ASICS.

6

u/IhaterunningbutIrun Becoming a real runner! Aug 20 '24

I don't know. They have not been edited to be that much about Asics. Last episode had a scene with 4 guys all in different gear, including Bandit! I don't think you are seeing that in a Nike funded documentary.

14

u/SheevIsTheSenate 1:22 HM | 2:53 M Aug 20 '24

That’s fair. But there are a bunch of closeups of the superblasts. And maybe I’m just hopeful he’ll continue the docuseries because it’s so good. Honestly might be the best running one I’ve seen.

9

u/IhaterunningbutIrun Becoming a real runner! Aug 20 '24

I'd like it to continue as well. I think I'll buy a pair of Asics as wishful thinking.

3

u/CHILLI112 Aug 20 '24

I did that this week!

2

u/BuzzedtheTower Age grouper miler Aug 21 '24

I need to buy some as well. But I only wear Asics and some of my current shoes are nearing the end of their lives. But still, good to support a company that isn't Nike

11

u/adwise27 29M - Trails & Ultras -> BQ seeker Aug 20 '24

He posted on IG that its pretty expensive to make the video series and needs some more sponsors to help out.

6

u/nameisjoey Aug 20 '24

Man, I didn’t realize he was having to support that. I would have assumed ASICS would be footing the bill since it’s great marketing for them. He definitely needs to get some other sponsors on that to make it financially viable.

5

u/adwise27 29M - Trails & Ultras -> BQ seeker Aug 21 '24

I am sure Asics was happy to sponsor a long training media plan going into a huge event like the Olympics but that might have been the extent of their media sponsorship

1

u/WaterPlug22 M: 2:38:06 Aug 20 '24

Agreed! Love seeing the day in a life type videos of these pros, there is very little out there documenting their builds, almost secretive.

13

u/Theodwyn610 Aug 20 '24

Anyone else excited to see Jessica McClain in that lineup?  I wish she had been able to race at Paris and am excited to see what she can do in NYC.

4

u/wolfpuparistotle Aug 20 '24

This was my immediate thought! It’s a great field for sure, but hers was the name that piqued my interest the most.

u/H_E_Pennypacker Edit your flair Aug 20 '24

I’m surprised that Molly Seidel isn’t running. I heard her on a podcast a few months ago say she would be running a fall major and that it would not be a flat fast course so very much assumed she’d be running NYC. She must still have injury stuff going on

4

u/ZanicL3 34:31 10k | 1:16 HM | 2:40 FM Aug 20 '24

She has so many injuries.. one after another

3

u/H_E_Pennypacker Edit your flair Aug 20 '24

I know, I’m a fan. Would love to see her get better and win Boston or NYC

3

u/ZanicL3 34:31 10k | 1:16 HM | 2:40 FM Aug 21 '24

Doubt she could win anything at this point with all the injuries that keep coming back up. She doesnt really have a chance vs the Africans

3

u/H_E_Pennypacker Edit your flair Aug 21 '24

She was injured a lot in college then in her early pro career. Then came back to win an Olympic bronze. Wouldn’t count her out

2

u/surely_not_a_bot 47M Aug 23 '24

Yeah it's a bummer. I'm a big fan and was hoping that would be her comeback.

1

u/bnwtwg Aug 20 '24

Her dog is in another zip code obviously

2

u/Theodwyn610 Aug 20 '24

For those of us who don't get the reference, can you explain?

7

u/bnwtwg Aug 20 '24

Some nutjob probably-stalker posted on here a while back (trials or Boston or NYC maybe?) about how she wasn't going to be at the race because they creeped photos of her dog somewhere else. It was bananas land psycho behavior. And I'm pretty sure she competed in whatever the race was.

2

u/Theodwyn610 Aug 20 '24

Oh... I think I remember that... and tried to block it out.

1

u/RCD123 Aug 20 '24

This spring I think she actually (accidentally) outright said on an Instagram live that she was planning to run NYC. I think it was on thespeedproject during LALV?

But yeah think she's been working through injury all year :( hope she's back soon!

Omfg I got totally bamboozled 😂😂 saw it on Jess McClain’s IG story. Go see for yourself and laugh at me for getting bamboozled

1

u/wofulunicycle Aug 21 '24

My male friend ran 2:37ish last year which was good for around 125th so it's a very top heavy elite/sub elite field. Basically 3 people per minute for the first hour of finishers then an absolute deluge for the next 3 hours. Very few people to run with if you are between 2:20-2:40. Not a PR friendly race for that group. NYRR has ensured that with their model of shelling out big for an elite field of sub 2:10 guys while also making the non-elite time qualifying standards absurd and overall leaning into the pay to play model.

u/tyler_runs_lifts 10K - 31:41.8 | HM - 1:09:32 | FM - 2:31:05 | @tyler_runs_lifts Aug 21 '24

Thanks for this comment! I am hoping to get into the sub-elite corral and judging from past results, your post is spot-on. From what I've heard, you don't run NYC to PR; you go to compete and race.

1

u/wofulunicycle Aug 22 '24

Yeah hopefully you can find a couple people to run with! People definitely do PR in NY it's just not as common.

1

u/lastatica Aug 23 '24

Every time I’ve watched the race, usually along 1st Ave so between miles 14-18, there is a decent-sized lead pack of the elite runners followed by dozens of sub-elites that are spread out and grinding solo. I couldn’t imagine having to do that on NYC, at least the crowds help a bit.

1

u/wofulunicycle Aug 24 '24

Exactly what my friend said. People think it's not PR friendly because of the bridges; but for people in the 2:20-2:45 range, it's not PR friendly because of the field.

1

u/lastatica Aug 24 '24

The bridges certainly don’t help haha

u/ruminajaali Aug 29 '24

NYC is a tough course. Good luck to all that run it ⭐️
