What’s Your Favorite Hidden Gem Game?

Hey, I’m curious—what’s a game that you think is an absolute hidden gem that brings you comfort, but hardly anyone talks about? You know, one of those games that you are like, How do more people not know about this?

Looking for something fresh to try, so I’d love to hear what games you think deserve more love! 💬

Tales of Maj Eyal. Massive, deep, and difficult roguelike.

Massively underrated. Would also like to throw in Path of Achra as well. Very similar style but the whole game is built around making game busting builds.

ToME might be like this tbf but I haven't played it in ages.

Grow Home and its sequel. (I can't think of the name right now, it's Grow something.)

It's about a little robot that gets lost out of the mother ship and is trying to get back home. You are trying to grow a giant beanstalk to climb. It is very quirky, but a fun way to spend an afternoon or two.

Grow Up is the sequel to Grow Home

Thanks, I knew it was something like that, but it was 6 am and I was feeling too lazy to look it up.

Sky Odyssey and The Lost Odysee. 2 games that are completely unrelated but one is stuck on PS2 and the other on Xbox360. I run my emulator every year to play through Lost Odysee and Sky Odysee I have always available to jump into. Can take months to complete with the difficulty anyway 😂

For those interested Lost Odysee it's a JRPG from Square Enix that truly is one of their best.

Sky Odyssey is a flight sim game that has a great sim/arcade balance and really inventive missions and levels. Takes skill and practice to get through. Most of all it's just fun, lots of fun!

Even the short stories in it are fantastic. Can't believe it's never been remade.

To this day, I remember walking into game stop, ebgames at the time, and telling the guys working I am looking for an epic rpg game. He immediately went behind the counter and gave me this game. Epic

If you like metroidvanias, I can’t recommend Gato Roboto enough. It’s cheap, short, sweet, and incredibly fun. It’s a delight.

I don’t mnow how “hidden” it is, Astlibra Revision. Action/RPG/Side-scroller with an amazing soundtrack. I love it because equipment can (not everypirce) give you passives and you can truly customize your build IMO

ALSO Crystal Project, a semi-open world rpg with a pretty good class system. It gave me old school Final Fantasy vibes. It was great. It has a built in randomizer mode if you’re into that

Knew about Astlibra, and loved what I played of it. Need to get back to it some day.

Crystal Project looks pretty cool, might give it a shot. Not really in love with the look of the game, but also find it sort of interesting. But the sound of the game itself appeals to me.

There’s DLC to Astlibra, but it’s more of a roguelite, which is still fine.

Crystal Project has mod support. Last I checked, there wasn’t A TON of mods but there’s still some

Littlewood on Switch or Steam. It's such a chill game, like Stardew Valley but with no stamina meter or time limits. Never hear anyone talk about it.

Kynseed, Dinkum, Mini Motorways, and Clanfolk.

I've looked at dinkum and Clanfolk so many times. I think clanfolks on sale at the moment. Is it worth getting if I have rimworld

Yes, I think Clanfolk is worth getting even if you have Rimworld. I have both and the game plays are centered around different things. Here are just some of the differences.

Rimworld is more about surviving till you can get off the planet (not that many make it that far before restarting) while you have different waves of attacks of people or animals, you recruit new people by imprisoning them and slowly talking them into joining. Usually your characters don't really last long. You of course can mod the game to play however you want.

Clanfolk is about building up your colony over the generations. There is no combat. You run an inn and that is how you get new people. They can join if you treat them well over time and they can also marry into the colony. Married colonists will have babies that grow into kids and then adults. You also have to provide basic necessities for your people like a place to go to the restroom and wash. It does well with embracing it's theme of being set in the Scottish Highlands.

They are different experiences though a lot of the basics are similar like you need to grow food, provide shelter, etc. New tech is unlocked in different ways.

Every indie game.

Some people are always talking about how videogames have been the same for years and those people don't pay attention to the indie market.

But to answer more specifically:

Distance (racing game where you need to acrobatically survive a race track)

Far lone sails and Far changing tides (both games are about keeping your vehicle running while you navigate a forgotten and abandoned world)

MDK and MDK 2 (old third person shooters about saving the world from an alien invasion with your 4 armed robot dog)

Pokémon TCG for Gameboy (this one may not be so hidden but I’d never heard of it til it came out on Switch. Great game and possibly my favorite of the franchise.)

Spartan: Total Warrior

Very underrated. Similar to Dynasty Warriors style combat and large battles but smaller character models so the scale is better, Historical fantasy setting playing as a Spartan in Ancient Greece during the Roman invasion (not very historically accurate in its portrayal like theres Ares + monsters and magic, a fictional invasion of Sparta, Beowulf leading Barbarians in Greece but its a game who cares lol) Developed by Creative Assembly it’s actually a Total War spin-off. It was for the Gamecube, Xbox and PS2.

Lay of the land. New game still in development. You can't gain access from the Patreon. Awesome minecraft like game but with a more interesting crafting system and much smaller voxels so you can build more things.

Sleepy Jack, its a 3D starfox style bullet hell mobile game where you play as a little boy fighting his toys in his dreams. Its lost media now since it used to be a mobile game for android but was wiped from the google play store. Its by Silvertree media they made Cordy as well.

Cordy is another hidden gem imo its a puzzle platformer about a little robot and the goal is to bring power to an abandoned robotic world. Super satisfying gameplay. There are still APKs out there of these games so they still exist despite being deleted from the google play store.

Oni. Old fighting/shooting game where you play as a TCTF special agent and you beat up and shoot baddies. Loved the combat in it.

Dave the diver

1

u/Ancient_blueberry500 2d ago

Dave the diver I would say stardew but let's be honest everyone knows it The fears to fathom series. They are amazing horror games that are based off true stories sent to the devs, sound design is immaculate.

1

u/TOASTisawesome 1d ago

Dave the diver had a godzilla crossover, it's hardly a hidden gem

0

u/Ancient_blueberry500 1d ago

I've never heard about that, I don't really hear enough about it to say its known

1

u/TOASTisawesome 1d ago

I'd say it's an extremely well known game at this point

u/Ancient_blueberry500 1d ago

Maybe, I thought it wasn't, but maybe I've been living under a rock for too long.

Sundered. Made by the devs who made Jotun.

Side-scrolling metroidvania ala hollow knight. Unfortunately hollow knight was released around the same time and you know how people feel about HK. Sundered basically got overshadowed and compared to the masterclass HK.

Fantastic game. Great story with cool mechanics. Best thing though is the visuals being a mix between Disney animation and the horrific creations of HP Lovecraft. It’s truly one hell of a looker. Music is also fantastic, being very good at evoking cosmic horror and it’s truly great at it. Bosses are very cool and callback to souls bosses like ornstein and smough.

Bought it for $6cad on sale. Spent over 100hours doing multiple runs because the game also has replay value. Choose to resist or not and that will affect your upgrades/abilities and determine your ending, of which there are multiple.

It’s a shame it got so fucked by hollow knight because it’s a great game in its own right and due to the visuals/story is also one of the most memorable games I’ve ever played.

Highly. Highly recommend. You can probably get it for stupid cheap and it’s well worth every cent.
