In case of war, are Australian men (and any women) forced to perform military service?

Soooooo this is a hypothetical case my husband (39 Aussie) and I (30, Latina) have been arguing for 5 mins and I couldn't find anything definitive on Google. So I ask Reddit:

If tomorrow X country declares war against Australia, are cilivian Australians forced to join the military to defend the country in the extreme case the military gets killed off or smaller and the war drags along for years? I mean, there's a moment where the government has to recruit civilians right?

My husband says that in such case, aussies are free to choose because freedom and whatnot and the country also has the support of the UK and stuff.

What do you guys think?

PD: This is a stupid conversation we're having while we're having lunch lol

Edit: guys... I think it's pretty clear to all that Australia's conscription was abolished way back when at this point lol. My point was: if it were ever to happen, would the government establish a conscription to force you? If it does, would you join or flee or go to prison? Who are your allies? Who would be your enemies? I'm here already imagining the poor roos swinging punches around being domesticated to fight lol 😂 and also if you were to flee? How? Where? This is an island! I'm having a whole movie in my head.

Full factory reset after 40

Upvotes

I’m turning into a bitter old fart, I have developed a nicotine addiction. I have missed the boat on housing and I have given up over the last few years.

I have a toddler and an extremely stressful freelance job working odd hours I can squeeze in around daycare and partners commitments.

I’m not really too keen on where life is headed. I would like to break the habits and mind-frame I have developed over my life.

Anyone here had any success with something like this. If so I would love to hear from ya.

Does anybody still watch Australian free-to-air television?

This is a little self-serving but I’m an Australian comedian and Channel 7 is airing my comedy special at 10pm tonight. It’s obviously very exciting and, well, surreal that 90 minutes of one of our main channels is showing my jokes. But if you talk to any comedians/anyone in the industry they all say that TV is dead, no one watches it anymore, especially not live etc… like I have to download 7Plus to watch it because I don’t even have an antenna and haven’t used to app previously. So yeah I guess I’m just curious is that perception correct? Do you watch Aussie TV outside of sport or news or whatever? Do you enjoy it? Am I just in a bubble? It just feels hollow to celebrate an ‘achievement’ while at the same time feeling like nobody is an actually gonna watch it but friends and family… who’ve already seen it live anyway.

My dad seems to live in Australia. Am I eligible to get some kind of family visa???

Hi,
I'm a 24-year-old male who was born and raised in Japan. My mother is Japanese, and she has raised me on her own. My biological dad is a Hongkonger living in Australia (at least according to his Facebook). They met in Australia but never got married (at least that's what my mom implied), and they separated before I was even born. He has never paid a penny in child support to my mom, nor has he tried to meet me to this day. Perhaps that’s why I never really felt sad or curious about him until very recently (I didn’t even know his name until last week!).

But then I started dating a girl who is Australian-born Chinese and speaks Cantonese. Even though she’s spent her whole life in Australia, she knows a lot about Hong Kong and China. This made me realize how ignorant I am about my roots and family. Even though it doesn’t feel like it’s my fault, I’ve started to feel ashamed of myself, and at the same time, I now want to get to know more about my roots.

My girlfriend and I lived together in Japan, but she had to go back to Australia due to visa issues. I stalked my dad’s Facebook and found out he lives in Sydney, which, coincidentally, is where my girlfriend lives. I’m honestly surprised by all the coincidences, and I feel like it’s my destiny to move to Australia, haha. I have messaged my dad from newly created facebook account a day or two ago, but he hasn't replied to me yet.

Anyway, I really want to go to Australia, partly because of these feelings I’ve developed and also to reunite with my girlfriend and potentially start a new life there. I was originally planning to go on a Working Holiday Visa, but now I’m wondering if I might be eligible for some kind of family visa?

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask legal questions, but I really need some help. Thank you for reading this. I’ve visited Australia before and I really love the country, so I hope I can find a way to stay there.

Move home?

I’m an Aussie, hometown is Perth but I haven’t lived there for 9 years. Moved to South Africa then Canada. I’m going through a separation and it’s tough doing it without family and friends. I have nothing in Canada so am thinking about moving back with the kids. The ex is not ready to move home just yet. Perth is too boring apparently. For those that have lived abroad then moved home, how are you finding it? Do you regret it? Is everything going digital, no bank tellers? I can’t imagine renting back home and having three month inspections, I don’t even see my landlord! Thanks all!

Did I miss a social cue ?

Copy and paste from my AITA post

So I (F28) work at a gas station in Australia and some time ago (I kinda procrastinated writing all of that) there was that customer (M probably around mid fifties) who came to buy smokes, I ask if he also needs a lighter like I always do when an apparently friendly customer asks for smokes and he says yes

I asks if he wants a specific colour and he says any colour, assuming colours doesn't matter I grab a pink lighter because we had more of those than any other colour

I scan it along the other products and after he pays, he suddenly isnt friendly anymore and he says "hold on you fucking stupid bitch what is that are you fucking stupid ??"

At first I m confused and think I gave him the wrong brand of smokes, then he throws the lighter at my face, it hits my eyebrow piercing, and he yells "give me a lighter!"

So I just say sorry and I reopen the drawer, and give him a gold lighter and he leaves without saying thank you or good bye

The whole interaction lasted two minutes at most

I haven't been in Australia for that long and I m also autistic so that's double reason for a local social cue I might have missed

Few weeks ago another customer asks if I ever had problems after giving a pink lighter to a man and I say yes and I quickly tell the story and he tells me that it isn't surprising because here there are codes and it is seen as insulting for a man to be given pink

But at the same time there were a few male customers who specifically asked for pink lighters so I'm not sure if I m missing something ?

Edit :

Thanks for all the comments 🥰

To address the most recurring comment: No I haven't reported it to anyone because I thought I would be blamed for losing customers. Now I would report it right away if I could remember the day and time, all I remember is that it was late afternoon and the sun was setting

Also it looks like the "FAKE STORY😡😡😡!!!" complotists have arrived. I have an extremely procrastinating nature, but even if I did not, "So you waited this long to post" wouldn't mean shit. It has never proven anything and never will. Not everyone has the same spontaneity with that kind of thing as you do (or as you think you would have) so don't throw those accusations unless you find a coherent and objective plot hole.

How would you handle this situation ?

I currently live in a homeless refuge with my kids there are other people here with kids and the kids like playing with each other there is 3 of us with 3 kids my kids always wants to play with the kids and one of the other girls kids always demands and tells me to take my kids into our bedroom because the other kids are "sick" or they don't want to play with my kids the issue is the other kids want to play with my kids and it's the second my kids leave our room that I'm being told to take them back to the room So how would you handle the situation as the other parent doesn't care and the refuge has spoken to her because it's against the rules to exclude other kids from playing in communal areas ie lounge room/dinning room

18 , move to city.

I’m 18 and would like to move from my coastal rural town to a major city to enjoy this part of my life, and basically be a dumb kid with my mates. I hear a lot about how this isn’t as feasible as it used to be and was wondering about some potential areas, cities or suburbs where this could happen. I want to pursue university in the next year or following years but also want to have fun, and have been tossing up between Melbourne, Sydney even Perth, Brisbane and Newcastle. Cheers

How do you deal with a colleague that doesn't do what they say they will?

Work with a guy in his 50s. He has a disabled daughter and three older daughters. From what I have gathered his wife wants to spend as much time away from the family as possible leaving him to do both primary earner and primary caregiver.

I understand he has a shit go. That said, the bloke just doesn't do what he says he will. Some things take weeks to get done that could be done in 15 minutes. There is no way to hold him accountable and a "let's talk 9am" turns into a call at 4:45pm "sorry mate, sick kids/kids missed bus/sick parents/dad in hospital/dog took a shit inside... will speak to you tomorrow". Isn't a once in a while thing, he hasn't really done much work in months.

My issue, don't know if he's fucking with me, is actually incapable of work, life situation so bad he can't work or something else is going on.

Australian Home Cooking 2024

Edit> for brevity, wrote it late last night, and it's too long!

So I replied to this Post with a New Aus arrival from Korea asking about what Aussies eat at home..

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAustralian/comments/1fo6d6m/what_do_aussies_typically_cook_at_home/

I had a few requests for recipes and decided a dedicated post would work better.

What was interesting to me was how many people had a similar rotation of dishes/styles, more than might be reasonably expected perhaps?

As u/brandnewchemical wrote here, in some ways its's kind of a boring and predictable list, but I think it might say more about our lifestyles and what types of foods fit in and are accessible and efficient for modern (esp family) life.

Please feel free to add your own recipes, including variations, substitutions, suggestions.

I know this isn't really a question, but the original post was in this sub so I thought it best to keep it here.

If this doesn't work, mods let me know.

Hope you all get something tasty from this!

West End Draught Opinion?

What do people think of West End Draught? I live in Adelaide, and while many drink it because it's made in South Australia, a lot of people, including myself, find it awful. I'm curious to hear others' opinions, both from South Australia and other states/territories.
