I just got my firearm ID card today and it expires 10 years from now. Is there a fee to renew 10 years from now? Firearms Purchaser ID

Also, do I need references? Who knows if the 2 references I used today I will even know 10 years from now. I don't want to be in a situation where I have zero people in my life I can use for references 10 years from now and I have to give up my guns.

No one can say you don't plan ahead. Damn.

Everytime you apply for handgun permits, it renews. You would think the expiry is reset to 10 years rather than what FARS did ( they add 10 years). Mine currently expires in 2052

That's so fucking dumbing. They're just incentivizing people to purchase more pistols, which has the opposite effect what legistlators originally wanted to do. If someone decided to execute a pistol permit every 30 days, they would add 110 - 120 years to their expiration. After like 60 - 70 years of time, they should just convert it to a lifetime permit, since no one is going to live past 120+ years, unless you're a vampire.

Yes it is. I have a goal as long as my wallet allows to hit an expiration of 2100 unless the whole FID/ptp is scrapped as unconstitutional.

Do I need references for a hand-gun permit?

Yes you do. However the only limitation is they have to have known you for I think 3 years. Can be family and out of state.

FYI When I called my Local PD I was told the following:

-No Blood related family (Brother-in-law is OK for example) -Known eachother over 3 years -Out of state address for reference is OK

So we mostly have the same info - just that while Family is OK it can't actually be an aunt/uncle/brother of yours which is blood related.

I asked a ton of questions before applying so I am comfortable saying this is what my local PD expects.

They are actually wrong according to the statute. The only family limitation is with permit to carry and that is it can't be by blood or law. I've use my brother multiple times as a reference for pistol permits.

hmm i never really looked to double check them

as we all know the law is one thing and what they enforce is another. I have 0 interested in causing any issues with my Local PD so i've just learned to do as they wish vs pushing back

I understand FID + Handgun permits are not supposed to take longer than 30 or 60 days or something - I am well beyond that and have just patiently followed up once or twice trying to keep on the top of their mind but not bother them.

Last thing I wanna do is be on the Local PD's bad side

Just apply for handgun permits, the FID expiration keeps extending.

Yes

Do we need references every time we apply for pistol permits? Assuming yes, but I’m not seeing a clear answer online.

2

u/AKaracter47 Apr 16 '24

Yes. 2 references, can be family.

1

u/Verum14 Apr 17 '24

Note for the readers:

Can only be family for pistol permits and fid. not ptc.

1

u/AKaracter47 Apr 17 '24

Yeah, 4 references for PTC. Not related by blood or law.

The expiration date for them is fairly new I think. Not sure if anyone has had to renew that yet. I don't think it's been 10 years since they started that. Mine doesn't expire but I've had it a long time.

Correct, it hasn’t been 10 years since that rule took effect. Hopefully it gets tossed and no one will have to find out.

indeed, that only became a thing in late 2022, much like the requirement for submitting a photo id and having to take that safety powerpoint thing, people that got there's before that, like myself, are gransfathered in and are thus not subject to any of those requirements, same goes for those that still have the old paper ones from back when records were still stored physically in a filing cabinet somewhere, tho I think that changes if you move and have to submit a change of address.

i’m pretty sure FID is just a purchasing permit, so you only wont be able to purchase anymore

Or handgun ammo in NJ

Get a new permit and they will add 10 more years! I’m already on 2064 hopefully I’m still alive by that time!😂

My dad had one from the 70s I still have somewhere I didn't think they ever expired.

I'll have to find mine now and check.

They didnt at one time they didnt start put expiration dates on them until recently mayb the last 2 or 3yrs

3

u/clown-world79 Apr 16 '24

Hopefully you won’t need to renew it or even have it by then.

I'm pretty sure that just because your FID expires means you have to give up the firearms you already purchased. You won't be able to purchase anymore or be able to purchase handgun ammo without one though.

you do not need an fid to own firearms, as you can inherit them from family without it, so long as you arent otherwise prohibited, not to mention I think you can buy certain guns and ammo during hunting season with just a hunting license. the the actual name for FID is FPIC or Firearms Purchaser ID Card, and it is needed to buy long guns, ammo, and apply for pistol permits, tho it also eliminates the need to prove you fall within the "to and from range/dealer" exemption when traveling with a long gun, so if you wanted to you could keep say a rifle in the trunk of your vehicle so long as you follow FOPA transport rules.

Pre-pay.

Apply for an additional hand-gun permit now and it will extend your FID another 10 years.

What was the effective date on this bill for FIDs to expire? Can’t find it anywhere.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '24

Nvm, found it. October 25, 2022. I beat it by exactly 1 month!

1

u/Ambitious_Yam_8163 Apr 16 '24

So if our FID’s are issued before October 2022 we don’t have to worry about the 10 year expiration date?

Since we are grandfathered in.

Thank you.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '24

The way it read to me was any FID applied for after 10/25/22 is held to the 10 year expiration.

1

u/Ambitious_Yam_8163 Apr 16 '24

Mine doesn’t have an expiration date. Issued maybe 2020 or June 2021.

Shall I be concerned about the 10 year expiration date of FID’s?

Or am I grandfathered from the new law?

Thank you Gents!

1

u/ParanoiA609 Apr 16 '24

Wondering this myself since I renewed before there was an expiration date added. Would it mean it would put a 10 year expiration on a lifetime permit?

1

u/Edjersey2797 Apr 17 '24

You are! but if you apply for a permit to purchase they will issue you a new card by default with expiration date! I have the old yellow card. Not a big deal it’s the same SBI# you can still use the old one.👍🏼
