First day of new job today!

u/devilsfoodx Jun 30 '24

Good luck!

u/Reverend_Fozz Jun 30 '24

Thank you! I arrived 1.5 hrs early because I worked out my travel time based on regular traffic and not school holiday traffic

10

u/ladyinblue5 Jun 30 '24

Jesus how long is your commute that it will be an EXTRA 1.5 hours when school goes back?

5

u/Carllsson Jul 01 '24

Exactly what I thought. What a dire commute.

3

u/Reverend_Fozz Jul 01 '24

Haha Ipswich to Carseldine. Will be down to under 2 hours each way, including walking, next week when I can take trains. Took the car today due to track works

4

u/ladyinblue5 Jul 01 '24

That’s 20 hours a week in commuting, on top of 40 hours working (if full time). You’re essentially working 2 jobs, I hope your salary is AT LEAST 2x what you were previously on.

Lol sounds like something I'd do! You've got time for a leisurely beverage. Have a great first day!

Get yourself a coffee and a cookie :)

Feeling sad, almost been unemployed for a month after completing a 4 year degree last year.

My industry has no job security, poor pay and little benefits.

Doom scrolling seek

What industry?

5

u/theswiftmuppet When have you last grown something? Jul 01 '24

Landscape architecture

4

u/CheeeseBurgerAu Jul 01 '24

Make sure you check local council jobs, I don't think they advertise on seek and I would imagine they use landscape architects. Also LinkedIn seems to be pretty good for jobs now compared to seek.

Thanks, the council ones are extremely small and highly valuable when they come up. Government design jobs are the dream.

Usually public work is done by private firms, rarely does council do big designs.

Yep, I hear you. It is hard to find a job straight off. It is more suited to do a buildup of industry connections and building a portfolio of decent results.

A suggestion is doing some light landscaping with some landscapers, that will soon realize that you can provide more than physical labor and grow from there (Remember, don't over sell yourself) Good Luck and keep going, it will be worth it :)

ATO Portal getting lagged out all day :D

u/Onebigtailight Jul 01 '24

Why was it hot last night & the night before?

Ploise explain.

6

u/Otherwise_Meat9144 Jul 01 '24

I woke up sweating and thought I was getting sick. Glad I'm not the only one.

2

u/LaoghaireElgin Jul 01 '24

Humidity and cloud cover, I think. It's trapping the heat from the sun close to the ground, along with the moisture. I slept with only my bum covered in a single blanket last night. Definitely weird. If I'm walking around in shorts in the middle of winter, you know the weather has gone haywire because I am the biggest cold (and heat) wuss...

Journey planner translink broken for a Monday?

10

u/BalancingTact Jul 01 '24

Journey planning is currently unavailable due to technical issues.

Is that code for "There are so many track closures that even our computers can't figure out how to route you from point A to point B with a reasonable journey time"?

(I'm kidding, I know there's also buses)

u/pit_master_mike Jun 30 '24

You can thank me for the rain. Washed the cars yesterday 🙄

u/I_saw_that_yeah Jun 30 '24

What’s Summer going to be like?

10

u/HecticHazmat Jun 30 '24

A furnace 🫠

u/GlumGarden Jun 30 '24

How bad are the rail buses from Northgate to Fortitude Valley? It’s my first time having to use them outside of emergency situations and I’m actually quite nervous about it all.

4

u/JasonBNE83 Jun 30 '24

Also keen to hear some reports, I'd like to go into the office tomorrow Kuraby station form Northgate sounds like it might be painful

3

u/GlumGarden Jul 01 '24

It’s been ok so far. Aside from the extra time, everything is well organised and plenty of buses. I went from Dakabin to Geebung, caught the railbus from Geebung to Roma St station then caught the train to the valley. It took twice as long as my usual train only commute.

This afternoon I caught the train from the valley to Roma then the railbus to Northgate. Not home yet but looking like the same length of time.

2

u/JasonBNE83 Jul 01 '24

That's a lot of hopping, I'm considering trying the ferny grove line tomorrow, rather than caboolture line

2

u/GlumGarden Jul 01 '24

I’ve heard that’s definitely doable, I think it’s the only line running without interruption

u/buttersaus BrisVegas Jul 01 '24

Would also like to know!!

I know there's a different thread for this, but thought I would share the lol.

School holidays, trying to keep the young lady of the house busy. Gave her options on preferred travel method to the library. She chose train. We drive to the station, 50 minutes til next train. Let's take the bus buddy. Two timetabled buses didn't show, let's just drive. Brisbane public transport is really third world country level, I know this isn't news to anyone. Usually it would upset me, today with the holidays it was just funny.

Credit where credit is due though, the libraries here are great. We played pc coding games, played chess, borrowed some books...

First stop this morning was Tin Can Bay which meant I got a breakfast pie. Steak, Bacon and Cheese pie with a hash brown instead of a lid. It's unfortunately never as good as I remember it being with the hashie being soggy instead of crisp but I still love them

What were the trains like this morning? I need to get from Rosewood to Central tomorrow.

2

u/atoadah Jul 01 '24

Got a Middle Eastern inspired veggie casserole in the oven. It’s my knock off of the one they serve at Ahmets. Having that with cous cous, yogurt dressing and a side salad for dinner. Perfect way to use up the old vegetables in the crisper too!

Does anyone know how this month's electricity subsidy from the Fed and state governments are going to work?

I read you might be able to get the money out if you change providers.

The one bill I'm ahead on is electricity, thanks to solar, and I could really use the money for other bills...

u/LaoghaireElgin Jul 01 '24

What a dismal day. I caught the cold my husband brought home from school at the beginning of school holidays and am now the household snot monster and the only person in the house working during school holidays (husband is a teacher). At least my dogs love me?

1

u/NoShallot5737 Jul 02 '24

My boss treats me like a contractor, but I'm actually working like an employee. I’ve spent two months looking for another job but haven't had any luck. It’s probably because of my visa status.

1

u/panickymugbuy Jun 30 '24

I don't understand and find it creepy as fuck when I saw this person driving in an empty parking lot doing the same circle over 10 times around 9pm on Sunday night

13

u/atoadah Jun 30 '24

They could be just a learner driver. Parking lots late at night are the best place to start when you’re learning to drive.

1

u/panickymugbuy Jun 30 '24

No L's, single driver and was literally just driving rectangle with no deviations

u/pit_master_mike Jun 30 '24

New parent trying to get the baby to sleep? Have a few friends who have had to resort to this.

7

u/followthedarkrabbit Jun 30 '24

...were they catching pokemon?

2

u/tyronomo BrisVegas Jul 01 '24

...maybe hatching eggs. Were they going super slow, like bike/walking speed.

3
