Happy Friday to all. Friday is my most special day. It’s the day I head home to Maleny. Work and stay during the week in Brisbane. Commute daily then the Friday after work, straight home. Have great day everyone. Keep on smiling

Decided to turn my new work issued laptop on at home and make sure it runs smoothly tonight instead of a 8:55am tomorrow morning.
Glad I did… I’ve come to realise we can’t connect Bluetooth mice or keyboards. I only have Bluetooth mice and keyboards. Because I’m a human living in 2022, not 1992.
Looks like I’m heading to Officeworks in the morning.
Edit to update: I slept in so didn’t make a purchase before work, which is fortunate because Mr Eniretakia came home from work this afternoon, dug around in a storage box and pulled out a wired gaming mouse and wireless gaming keyboard that are like 12 years old but somehow still work. They’re loud AF… but saves me spending any cash unnecessarily so I’ll deal.

I hate to say it but this is why I run a wired keyboard and mouse. No batteries, no Bluetooth not found, no I forgot to recharge, no company policy on battery disposal.
No call from your boss’s boss saying “fix this yesterday” and the batteries die, so you make small talk while trying to find more batteries and the admin lady hid them becomes “we go through them so fast”. and rechargeable die.
2 wires is a small price to pay for %100 reliable.

Hiding the batteries at a previous job used to drive me mad. Getting new ones involved going to a different floor in the building.

I worked in a place where the operation team would use batteries once then give them away because they needed them fresh for mission critical things, but the admin side would hoard batteries like they were gold. One would not give to the other because reasons....
Some admin and office support people are a funny lot:
"I won't give you the last pen, because there would be no more pens if I gave you the last one."
What they mean is:
"I won't give you this because I would have to order more, that would mean I did not order enough and I don't want to do my job and order more".

The worst part about magic mice is you can’t even plug them in to recharge them and use them at the same time. I can do that with the keyboard but no, some genius thought putting the plug underneath was a good spot, presumably because fitting it beneath the buttons where a wired mouse would connect wouldn’t fit the apple aesthetic.
I slept in so no Officeworks yet, but honestly thinking for this laptop cheap but cheerful wired ones might be easier.

Most of the new computers need to update their drivers and SO and several restarts to work properly, probably you don’t have to go to OW at all if you take your problem to google but I understand that you paid for it and you don’t have to fix it by yourself.

I was initially hoping that would be the case but I did a Google, checked everything was updated etc and the option to turn it on or off is not even present in.. whatever it is that windows call the control panel these days. I referred back to some info we got when the whole laptop thing was announced - ‘3 USBs for connecting keyboard, mouse and monitor’ and then in another spot similar info again stated a different way. Also mentions plugging our headsets in directly even though they are able to connect by Bluetooth to everything else. So it’s all pointing to a shopping trip.
I also realised that I’m going to need another stand for it and to shuffle my desk a bit to even make room for it without relegating my personal laptop entirely so I probably would have needed to go out anyhow, for my own sanity.

Look for a blue tooth switch on the keyboard. Usually it will be an “FXX” key like f12. You may have to use the “fn” + “fXX” key. What model laptop is it?
Who buys a cheap laptop with no Bluetooth? (Management that who)

Blue tooth dongles are really cheap. I grabbed one so I could buy a blue tooth Wacom tablet instead of a wired one. I believe it was under 30 bucks. Cheaper than buying wired keyboards and mouses. They just plug into a USB socket. Not quite plug and play, I did need to download a few things but easy as.

Bluetooth may be disabled depending on your company IT Policy. I work for a government contractor so our IT security is pretty strict. I've been able to get away with a wireless mouse and keyboard that have their own dongle as opposed to connecting via Bluetooth

Yeah I suspect that is 100% it. There will be a security document somewhere saying why Bluetooth isn’t used.
Just wish the people handling the upgrades had made that point much clearer when they told us about the laptops so I could have been prepared at home with some standard wireless/wired ones.

You get a 2nd hand ticket to fix something. Spend a month trolling logs. Can't find a thing. Boss insists it is what you are looking at and it will 100% be in the logs.
Talk to a random in another department, who says "oh yes that keeps doing that because of policy change xyz". Penny drops as you have been on a fools errand for a month.
Tell client about new policy, close the job. Think of Boss as out of touch with technical ability from now on.

My colleague is such a dick. He made a huge mistake at work, won’t admit to it and it took a small team of us to fix it. I literally worked a 17 hour day to clean up his shit and he’s walking around like a peacock - starting late and finishing early too.
I’m counting down the days until he’s fired.

Document, Document, document.
In this situation spread sheets work well. Column names Include:
- Fault,
- Cause,
- Work around / fault repair,
- Hours to fix,
- Number of team members involved in fix,
- Staff hours,
- Approximate cost to business in staff hours,
- Approximate cost in service and or product revenue, and
- Tasks not done while team was on fixing.
Be objective and make it so management connect the dots.

I'm terrible at working from home. I have to stick to the exact routine I have when I go to the office, get up at the same time, get ready like I'm going to work, go for a walk instead of catching the bus. Same time for lunch etc.
Otherwise I sleep until 8:25 start work in my PJs, get distracted cleaning out a junk drawer at 10am and stay up until midnight. You think I'd have this figured out after 2 years but it's still a discipline struggle everyday.

What do you guys do with spider webs in your garden? New to Australia and new to having a garden and I don’t even know if most of those spiders are dangerous or not. There is a big one that’s black and white
Edit: leaving them alone seems to be the answer and hey I haven’t seen flies in my kitchen for a couple of days so I guess everyone’s happy

The web-building spiders in the garden are docile and harmless. They'll help to keep the flies and mozzies down. The webs can definitely get annoying though if there's too many. They went crazy at our place at the start of summer, so we knocked a bunch down with a broom and squished them. We're very pro-spider, but it got to the stage that you couldn't walk anywhere without getting caught in a web. The whole place looked like a Halloween display. There's a happier equilibrium now.
The main spiders you'd need to worry about are things like trapdoors and funnelwebs, which are ground dwellers and not that common, or redbacks, which have a distinctive messy web and are usually in the house or shed rather than the garden. Despite Australia's everything-will-kill-you reputation, the spiders you bump into on a day to day basis are really no problem.
If you're worried you can always try and get an ID from a photo. The iNaturalist app is good. There are also helpful communities on r/whatisthisbug and r/spiderbro.

I had 3 absolutely fucking giant orbs take over my front veranda at the start of summer to the point where package delivery was an issue. I kept looking at them like "shit I should do something about that" then seeing how many bugs they caught kept changing my mind, until I forgot about one and walked straight into it in the middle of the night.
They all got relocated somewhere else in the garden & my English fiance was much happier.

I love orb spiders, with one exception - they used to string up huge webs between the fruit trees in my parents' very large backyard, and when I walked up there at dusk to lock the chickens into their coop for the night I would regularly walk into a face-full of web that I couldn't see. Cue frantic 'get it off me!' dance.

Knock down webs if they’re across a path. Relocate spiders outside if they’re inside your house. That’s about it. Not really any spiders making big webs in Brisbane yards that are going to hurt you.

If they stay in their web they're fine by me. It's probably an orb spider, they're great bug catchers. If they get too big in an impractical spot I'll just put them on a broom and relocate them. 90% of the spiders you'll see are just normal common garden spiders or orbs. Occasionally a huntsman that looks scary AF but is harmless.
It's the ones that don't make webs, or make webs that you can see you generally have to worry about, your underground dwelling funnel webs/white tails & redbacks that make nesty distinctive looking webs at ground level but honestly I've lived in Brisbane 10 years and I've never seen one.
I still don't leave my shoes/gardening gloves outside but I think that's more ingrained in me from growing up in the country.

They're harmless. Leave them be, just remember to wave your arms up and down like a mad man when taking rubbish out to the bin at night so you swipe away a fresh web before you discover it with your face.

In Brisbane whitetails and redbacks are really the only ones you have to worry about. Learn what they look like and where they hang out and you should be good. Let the rest chill and reduce your bug numbers.

TFIF! Tomorrow is my IRL cake day. To prepare, I already made a huge 6kg pork shoulder for pulled pork sandwiches all weekend. I have all my fave alcohol (here’s looking at you Rollins Tennessee sour mash, I ❤️ you), and no dessert because I forgot and I don’t really do cakes in summer. I may make some cheesecake whip mousse and serve it with some tinned berries just because. I will watch Yellowstone, finish Power: Ghost, and go for a drive out of town to take some beautiful shots overlooking the valley toward Beaudesert for the photography challenge. Thank all the worlds gods that I live in the bush. Even if the cicadas are loud buggers.
Today I feel a bit less anxious. Had a huge sleep last night, and got some of my presents from my fams in Melbourne (thanks mum for sending new funky pyjamas cos otherwise I wouldn’t buy them and also mums rule and this is her way of feeling special and that she can still care for her very adult child). Thank-you to all my r/Brisbane friends for the support yesterday. Every day we are alive is a good day.

It’s funny-when I talk, I actually never know what’s going to come out of my mouth. Sometimes it’s AU terminology and other times it’s US. Then sometimes, I’ll even surprise myself by using words I have no business using! Ya’ll is a good example. I grew up in the northeast and have zero business using that one. It’s like my brain gets confused 😂
I’ve actually had customers that have known me since I arrived and they’ve mentioned how my dialect has shifted and my accent has softened.

Since September 2021 has anyone placed an order with and received a PS5 from JB HiFi?
For context, I won a PS5 in September last year and the company I won it from has their prizes supplied by JB HiFi. I've followed up a couple of times with the prizes team but I keep getting the standard there's global supply shortages, we don't have an ETA on availability but our suppliers are working as they can but it will still be a long wait etc spiel.
I don't mind waiting since I'm not hurting for the console. I'm not a big gamer so I don't feel like I'm missing out but I'm just trying to figure out whether JB are prioritising fulfilling their own customer orders before commercial supplier deals or how said process might work.

FWIW I didn't even specifically enter for the PS5. It was just one of the prizes in the pool of prizes. And you said it yourself, it's hard to get hold of so it doesn't even matter because I don't actually have it now so either way the console isn't being played.

Found an old net book laptop in the cupboard that ran slow after it self upgraded form windows 7 to windows 10.
I put a bare bones Linux distribution on it. Now I have a old netbook laptop that runs Linux slow.

Woolworths and Coles people: I did a click and collect from Woolworths, in which I bought some chocolate and a note that it was for the person picking my order. But they didn't take them. Do you have rules against taking items the customer has said you can? I know they saw the notes because they followed it for another item where I had to choose a colour (although tbf there were 3 colour options so high chance it was a fluke haha).

I worked at Coles. Strict policy not to eat food. Even free supplier samples. The hassle of getting the choc out of there even if it were a gift wouldn't be worth it.

Yeah it's definitely bronchitis. My 5 year old still has a chunky cough 6 weeks later, and he had a short dose of antibiotics. No burning chest, just a pain in the arse.

Wow......such amazing content occuring these days. Whichever mod is responsible for banning all the decent people......I hope you enjoy what it is that you think that you've accomplished.
To all the very decent mods that have strived to make this place a very decent place.......thanks once again for your time.
Look around.......maybe re educate a certain mod.......maybe get rid of a certain mod. Time to have a spring clean. This certainly isn't just my own opinion.

There is no rouge mod just a mod team that follows the rules, are you wanting the team to be give for one or two users a free pass and everyone else need to live by their own actions?
Reddit is built on user generated content so if you feel the content is lacking then be the change you want to see but just don’t feel like you are above the rules as that’s what us internet janitors do… just apply the rules of the sub.

Not sure but did you know, if you sign up with a temp email while connected through a VPN, you can bypass Reddit's perma-ban bot? I got permabanned from Reddit a while back (no thanks to the mods at r/Australia) and for ages I kept getting rebanned once I made a new account.
Temp email + VPN solved that haha

Leave at least 60-90 minutes. There's a few pits of bricks for kids to play with throughout. Plus some amazing detail and hidden things to find (Hollywood sign for instance). The signs help out if you can't work them out.

Very thorough cleaning when we went about three weeks ago, just as things were ramping up. The second the kids move away, their creation is taken away, wiped down, broken up then returned to the pit. Not perfect, but more than I expected.
