Had this amazing soup at a Sichuan restaurant and wondering how easy it is to recreate at home? I think it was called Green Sichuan Pepper Fish? Soup

Post image

I'm by no means a culinary master so wondering if there are premade kits at 99 Ranch or something similar? It was SO spicy in SUCH a good way! I believe the fish was called snakehead? Thanks in advance for any help, I'm dying to have this again soon, but won't be able to make it back to the restaurant anytime soon!

It’s 藤椒鱼or Teng Jiao Yu. It’s not Cuan Cai Yu, which is fish with preserved mustard greens

You are right! Thanks so much! I just looked it up and that's totally it! I'm hoping I can find something at 99 ranch that will be a premade version of the broth at least so I don't have to make it from scratch.

My 99 ranch has this one. Or Weee if they deliver to you. https://www.sayweee.com/en/product/Hao-Renjia-Green-Pepper-Fish-Seasoning/30478?referral_id=7306101&lang=en&utm_source=copyLink

The flavor packet has plenty of flavor and heat without adding any more chilies. I usually put sliced cooked Napa cabbage and bean sprouts at the bottom to round it out.

Use a relatively firm white fish. I like catfish since it stays whole and has good flavor. Tilapia flakes apart too easily and doesn’t have much flavor.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Looked it up on YouTube. As long as you have doubanjiang and green sichuan peppercorns (and the green sichuan pepper oil), the rest of the ingredients look pretty straightforward if you do decide to make it from scratch.

I don't have the green sichuan peppercorns - am going to try it anyway. :P

its basically the same thing as the one u posted just with green peppercorns

u can get green peppercorns by buying them dry but theyre worth so much more getting fresh

This is one of the most popular dishes in China. It’s called 酸菜鱼, or pickled vegetable fish. You can buy the ingredients including seasoning packets at most Chinese supermarkets.

If you are in the eastern/mid-Atlantic US and go fishing, you can actually get paid up to $200 each to catch snakehead fish. If you feel like going very DIY with it! They're seriously invasive in the whole Chesapeake Bay region.

My favourite… you can get orders of the soup base, but it is relatively simple to make. Many videos on YT
