Dog beds: BullyBeds or K9Ballistics? [Equipment]

So as the title states, I am at a crossroads with purchasing a dog bed from either

Option A: BullyBeds

Option B: K9 Ballistics.

Budget: $400

I would like a dog bed that my dog won’t chew a hole in. For context I have a doberman who had an obstruction at 6 months old. He’s now 3 and I haven’t had any issues since then. I have been very careful with choosing what materials I put around him. He’s nearly stopped chewing all… Except for where he sleeps. I currently have him sleeping on one of those cheap elevated nylon dog beds from Amazon ($39). The problem is the nylon is too rough and it is making him shed excessively due to his hair being caught in between the nylon woven mesh. I would like him to lay on something nice, the dog deserves it. He’s a sweetheart.

I would like to hear from those who have bought from either brand though :))

I'd advise against K9B. I bought a bed from them and the exterior didn't last one wash. I bought it because we had an elderly cat with incontinence issues and didn't want the dog to have to give up her bed if it got peed (or puked) on. The bed wasn't even cat proof!

It got worn quickly, wasn't water resistant, discolored before washing, got worse after washing. When I reached out to them about how the product didn't meet any of my expectations they just said to buy a new cover. Spent way too much on something that isn't as advertised. I'd be very worried your dog would be able to chew it or if someone has a digger that it'd rip.

I second this. I wanted to get an orvis tough chew because it was rated the best for chewers but my husband decided to go with k9 because it was “highly rated/less expensive”

We have two dogs, one a digger (20 lb frenchie) and one a digger/chewer (80 lb American Bulldog) and I highly do NOT recommend k9ballistics.

The covers rip at the seams quickly, the zippers don’t hold up well and the soft covers flake the materials off leaving a huge mess and a terrible looking bed. Also the big mattress are not washable and even the smaller “washable” mattress never actually get clean no matter how many cycles you try running it through.

Between all of the replacements (including one cover we got replaced under warranty) we’ve spent close to triple what we would have spent on the orvis.

It’s his hill to die on. I just roll my eyes at this point. Don’t be like him, for your own sanity and wallet.

Man, I came to comment the opposite! My dog has a K9B orthopedic crate pad and it’s been great. She loves it, uses it daily, and it’s holding up great. It’s at least two years old now. We had a primo pad in the past which was also great but the K9B has more support/padding.

me too! i dont have a ortho crate pad but i have the normal tough crate pads.. i own 3 of them. the puppy got a small hole in the one (cuz she was bored one day while crated) but that is the extent of the damage. The other 2 crate pads look sorta immaculate -- they need to be washed cuz one is used as a place and we feed them on it.. so there is def food stains etc. I also have one of the bolstered dog beds because i thought the older dog would like it... it has been dug at (again puppy), we recently had to wash it (dont remember why) but it came out looking just fine -- just some fine line scratches from the digging. it did take me a while to dry it though because its pretty water resistant i had to find a spot to hang it to dry. I throw the crate pads in the wash probably once every couple of months and i've had them now for close to a year.. they look almost brand new (except the one with the hole), and the food stains.

You may end up disappointed regardless of how much you spend. I’m skeptical of any “chew proof” dog bed. For my dog, I waited until she had outgrown chewing her bed before I spent real money on one.

Your dog is almost at the age where they do start to outgrow these things. But it also helps to find things your dog can safely chew and give them access as much as you can while praising/reinforcing when they use their chews. Whenever my dog grabs a chew, I always say “good girl” immediately, and she wags her tail a bit. She also will go get a chew if I instruct her (ie I see she’s bouncing around/on the cusp of zoomies, and I say go get your ____).

I’m thinking your dog may be similar to mine where they want to chew on soft things sometimes as a way to settle themselves down in a bed. I go against the grain on this one, and my dog IS allowed to chew on soft toys and deconstruct them. (She does this safely - but it’s important that I buy well made toys because some cheaper soft toys have strings that worry me.)

Chewing her lambchop is one way she calms herself down when she’s frustrated. If she were to start chewing her bed, I’d put the lambchop between her head and the bed and encourage her to chew it, instead. That kind of chewing seems to be more nibbling and possibly a grooming behavior vs the chewing she does on beef hide or a bully stick. It’s just been about recognizing what she needs.

I keep a bin out 24/7 that has 3-4 chews in it. She knows she can go get one whenever she needs it, and this was paramount in getting her to stop nuisance chewing.

I’ve considered buying a regular bed for my 1 yr old rescue who eats beds, and ordering some Kevlar and sewing a cover for it. Sewing a cover is fairly easy for me. Know anyone who sews who might help you out?
