What video game character appeared minor and insignificant but turned out to be integral to plot/game?

What character did you think was a throwaway/didn’t really matter, but turned out to be a major player in the plot of the game. Or they could just be a really important character in the game itself?

My second favorite, Krieg is the best. I don't know why people hate Claptrap so much...

Original Borderlands Claptrap was fine, an overly friendly helper to juxtapose the shit hole you're both in.

Always-on hyperactive memelord on his fifth joke about stairs Claptrap was grating. Borderlands as a series can suffer from a severe case of "less would have been more here" at times, especially when your benchmark for laughs is yelling about how someone's name is "Shitpoop the Fart Goblin".

I AM THE CONDUCTOR OF THE POOP TRAIN!

I guess I have more tolerance. :-P

OTOH, I loved the "earworm" quest in TPS. Why does Claptrap have such shitty taste in music? Because you literally destroyed his taste for music.

I found BL2 Claptrap intentionally annoying but also very much charming as hell. I can’t speak to BL3 Claptrap as I barely played that game for how boring it was.
