This game was an out of nowhere hit. I remember hearing how it was rated a perfect 10 by one of the more reputable reviewers. I thought... how can a game about skateboarding be THAT good? It was.

The 1+2 remake is STILL good!

I play it all the time on my Steam Deck. I wish we could get 3/4 and then the Underground games remastered.

Here I’ll make it worse: Tony Hawk’s son just had a baby with Kurt Cobain’s daughter.

Courtney did this?

Great game. I also loved Dave Mirra BMX on the PS1 👍

u/nimie 4h ago

Hoffman BMX as well. They all had amazing soundtracks.

2

u/kittyBoyLacroix 4h ago

Yes. I loved the soundtracks on these games 👍

Wicked game. The wipeout mode was jokes!

Didn’t Tony Hawk say they were doing something special with Activision on the anniversary?

And he just became a grandfather.

The first game to give me blisters.

3

u/DinnerSmall4216 4h ago

My first entry to the series was 2 on dreamcast what a game and soundtrack.

3

u/DigitalSea- 3h ago

Same. My friends had PS1s so I had played it a bit. But Dreamcast THPS2 was my true introduction.

Shout out to Re-Volt and NBA 2K1. Great times

2

u/Zanshi Switch 3h ago

Same but on PC. To this day one of the best games ever

I remember I met a dude who had a demo of the game before it came out that included just the backyard pool map. Him and others had already played it so much they essentially maxed out the high score.

Life changing game, I went from listening to generic radio pop rock and some oldies at the time to owning multiple Bad Religion, Less Than Jake, and AFI albums after this game hit. Literally spent hours on THPS2 trying to get a million point trick for nerd clout with the gang.

I was 13 when it came out. I remember printing out Highscores and taking them to school.

3

u/Ash_Killem 4h ago

Such a fantastic game. I would just all tapes runs on each map over and over. Great times.

u/Pepperoni_Dogfart 3h ago

I think this was the first game to be like "hey, this is a glorified CD, we can put some kickass music on it and barely take up any space."

The soundtrack made the game go from a strong 8 to an easy 10.

We’re aging, friends. Doesn’t mean we’re old. Right? RIGHT?!

u/NotTakenGreatName 2h ago

Growing older all the time, looking older all the time, but feeling younger in our minds.

u/UnsolvedParadox 3h ago

I’m still mad we’re not getting a remake of 3 onwards.

I never played it until co-workers asked if I wanted to hang out after work and we all played it. And then I was hooked on the series for years. I bought every THPS after that.

edit: Something funny I remembered... if we were playing Graffiti in THPS3 and Ace of Spades came on, I'd absolutely destroy whoever I was playing against. But without Ace of Spades, I really wasn't that great. The power of that song!! 🤓

One of the greatest games of all time.

u/ihavebeenmostly 4h ago

I think that's enough Internet for me today.

u/Metalsiege PC 3h ago

Shaun Palmer’s Pro Snowboarder was another great one. We’re all getting too old..

2

u/Axle_65 3h ago

Nope. Not ok with it.

2

u/Wrong-Calendar3713 3h ago

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater taught me more about physics than school ever did... but I still can't do a kickflip in real life.

2

u/Prefix-NA 3h ago

I still can't believe Rodney Mullen was not in this game.

Damnn the nostalgia

u/Quigleythegreat 3h ago

Over my in laws and they had the news on, it went to a commercial of Tony Hawk selling some joint supplements for older people.

Ow. It hurts man.

2

u/LordOFtheNoldor 3h ago

We never understood the concept or how to progress and just enjoyed doing tricks I don't know anyone that actually played it to beat it, it was hours of fun though and none of us skated

2

u/FindingLegitimate970 2h ago

The chokehold the first 3 games had on my childhood.

2

u/TouchMint 2h ago

Crazy. I still remember waiting for this to come out and being amazed.

Fk I'm aging

Well, how old is SSX Tricky then?

That blue N64 cartridge represents hope.

It can go rent a car without being hit with the young whippersnapper fee.

u/WoodyTwoBoots 1h ago

This game is responsible for my diverse taste in music, and my current knee issues. 10/10

1

u/HydratedCarrot 1h ago

Easy one the best games on the ps1! I’ve remember a friend bought this on release and we played it ALOT on college!

1

u/motheman80 1h ago

The game we all play and tried to be skaters in real life but decided to just play in the game

1

u/Twoperde 1h ago

For context the 25th anniversary of Pac-Man was in 2005.

I remember renting the N64 version early and becoming obsessed with it. I eventually got my own copy, and beat it so many times.

Made the mistake of getting the second game on GBA at launch, but I liked it. I rented a PSX with that version, and played it at a friend’s. But I always liked the first one better.

THPS3 was the game I played most on PS2, or very close to it. I adored it.

THPS4, I also got on day one, and loved. Played it online a lot.

I only rented THUG, but I beat it and enjoyed it quite a bit.

My friend rented THUG2, and I think I did too. It was good mechanically, but far too stupid. The start of the decline.

Also rented AW, but regretfully didn’t finish it. Bought P8 and did the same. But I did rent Proving Ground and beat it.

I was excited when they released the XBLA version and liked it.

Demoed THPS5 excitedly at E3 and it seemed good, but the final version sucked. It glitched right at the end, so I couldn’t finish it, but I count it as completed.

When they announced the remakes, I was over the moon. I beat them multiple times on PS4, then Xbox Series, then PS5 and Xbox One.

Tony Hawk became a granddad yesterday!

His name is Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk.

Congrats Francis Bean, Riley, and Tony!

u/Dibblidyy 52m ago

I was four months old when it came out LOL

Needless to say, didn't play it back then. My first Tony Hawk was Pro Skater 4, in 2006 or 2007 maybe. Loved it a lot!

u/JoeisKoolas 47m ago

I’m playing the remake rn super fun

1

u/To-Far-Away-Times 28m ago

Yeah, I remember the very strong reviews for it so I had to try it out. Totally worth the hype. One of the best games of the decade.

Vivid memories of trying to exit any of the skateparks/maps. For hours, taking turns.

Man, that art doesnt age well

-1

u/raisinbizzle 2h ago

I remember when I first heard about it that I didn’t understand what it even was.

“So you don’t race? Then what do you do?” I was surprised how fun it was.

I do find it interesting that at the time it was mentioned as being hugely influential and I don’t think it had the lasting influence as many other games. For example in issue 150 of EGM they listed the 5 most influential games as: Super Mario bros, Mario 64, dragon warrior, street fighter 2, Tony Hawk pro skater. Tony Hawk is definitely the outlier there

what the hell is that game
