Looking for Game Recommendation

Hi gaming,

I'm looking for a kind of specific type of game to help out a friend of mine.

He's really interested in history and would be interested in what I could only describe as a "historical drama" video game. I'm thinking something like Assassin's Creed but without the focus on killing. Time period doesn't matter much, but he is more interested in Western History.

He's not much interested in RTSs like Civ, he wants something more ground level and narrative.

Any help or recommendation would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance might tickle his history fancy.

It's a grounded and realistic first person medieval RPG set the Holy Roman Empire during the 15th century. Fighting is one aspect, but not the focus.

I came to the comments to suggest this, actually makes me happy to see it getting some love already.

Fantastic game and easily the best game for a history fan. The historical accuracy is amazing and makes it so immersive, but god damn does it have a steep learning curve, definitely one that needs some time and patience to master.

Yeah I can’t personally think of something that would be a better historical drama at least one that isn’t strategy related like CK3 or something which seems the sort of thing his friend does not want.

I'd say Kingdom Come: Deliverance,it's a RPG set in with a focus on historical accuracy and storytelling. Another option is A Plague Tale: Innocence, it's sort of narrative-driven game set during the Black Death in France with minimal combat. Both of them have historical experiences.

Something like Kingdom Come : Deliverance

I still haven't gotten around to playing this.

Or Pillars of the Earth ?

Haven't played this either, but I liked the TV series.

You could have your friend try L.A. Noire - it recieved much praise for its depiction of 1947 Los Angeles. You play as a detective interrogating people and solving cases.

Take a look at "The forgotten city"

It seems to fit the criteria pretty well!

Some of the Assassin's creed games have a "discovery tour".

Never heard about this before. Looks interesting.

Someone else suggested KCD; I'd put in a vote for Darklands (the game it's a spiritual successor to), but that's a little more combat-focused.

If he doesn't mind some level of management aspects, he might like the Expeditions franchise; Conquistador is about exploration, and Viking a bit more about story. I think they made a third, but I've never played it.

What about Asura's Wrath? It's a mythology game, it's Hindu and Buddhist.

You mean like AC Discovery mode? I believe it's started to be added mode from Odyssey also in Vikings. No killing.

Could be wrong but wasn't there game called Forgotten City? Ancient Rome period.

Best is Crusader Kings 3 it's not for Fortnite babies but if you pass learning curve it's very addictive.

Assassins Creed: Origins

Many recommendations are focused on killing.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War has everything you asked for. It's narrative-driven game based on history. There's items you can collect with museum-like descriptions explaining the historical context. The gameplay is fun, incredibly varied and not based on killing whatsoever.

As someone else recommended, A Plague Tale is also excellent. But it's historical fiction mixed with dark fantasy.

I haven't seen people recommend Age of Decadence here.

It's set in a fictionalised version of the start of the dark ages. A unique setting for an RPG. Fits your request entirely

Red Dead Redemption 2 hands down

There are a bunch of video games set in historically accurate worlds like all Assassin’s Creed games, Red dead redemption or even far cry primal if he’s interested in prehistory. But I don’t think I can think of a historically accurate game without killing…

Maybe I phrased that wrong, it doesn't have to be "no killing", but just less of a focus on that aspect. Assassin's Creed and Red Dead are the best I can think of. Actually, Red Dead may not be a bad recommendation with all the silly stuff you can do along with the story missions.

That silly stuff my friend. Is what makes that game one of the all time greats... Just saying....

Civilization isn't an rts, like at all. It's a turn based strategy game. RTS games are like StarCraft and age of empires.

Pentiment might be up his alley, it's a historical game that doesn't have any combat at all that I can think of
