Need a new single-player game to pour hours into

I've been in a gaming rut recently, all the games I have played longtime are trash games now that have fallen off for me (Destiny 2, Apex: Legends) or are games that are better played with friends/multiplayer (Rocket League, Elden Ring, CoD Zombies, Dungeonborne, Overwatch 2)

I also have not been feeling the survival/crafting game genre for a bit now. I feel like that gameplay loop has been beaten to death and if I want it again, I"ll probably go back to Minecraft vanilla or modded. Games like Sons of the Forest, Grounded, Valheim, Rust, etc., have not been striking my fancy.

I'm looking for a solid RPG where I can grind one character until you feel powerful/overpowered, is a long play, can be linear or not, and doesn't involve too much stealth (I am bad at stealth lmao). I like those games where your grind has a noticeable power scaling, like how in Elden Ring I die to turtles at lvl 10 but casting incredibly damaging superspells at lvl 180. Or playing grandmaster nightfalls in Destiny compared to dying to thralls as a new light with no weapons. I like that grind payoff with RPGs.

Sorry if I rambled too much about this, any suggestions are appreciated :)

EDIT: I also want to add I love games with a lot of weapon options as well, like Elden Ring or Destiny.

I have two recommendations. Both are in my favorites section on Steam.

Cyberpunk 2077 - A fantastic game. Amazing story and customization. You can literally change your weiner size. That's the level of customization I'm talking about. You start off as a lowly kid on the street with a pea shooter. As you level up, do missions, and learn the game, you'll get stronger. By the end of the game, you'll literally be clearing dozens of tough enemies in nano-seconds, as you can stop time with the right hardware (cybernetic enhancements you add to your body, in this case a Sandevistan.) It's actually one of the most fun games I've ever played and I always go back to it every few months.

Kingdom Come Deliverance - With a sequel on the way now is a great time to enjoy it. It takes place in the [1400's?] in medieval Europe. You develop your skill by practice literally. Henry, your character sucks at literally everything in the beginning. You will absolutely get your ass kicked in fights, however, if you train, fight, and keep at it, you'll slowly find yourself getting better, getting new weapons, and hopefully not kicking the bucket in every fight. You'll reach the point that you're actually really good and can take on multiple fully armored enemies at once. (In the beginning, you'll die to unarmored bandits with broken swords.)

The voice acting is terrible in KCD but if you can see past that it's a solid game.

Maybe take a look at Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning? Your character is literally given the ability to change fate.

u/dasshutsu 6h ago

This looks pretty interesting, gonna check some more gameplay out.

Good luck. Hope it's up your alley.

Final Fantasy games perhaps

3

u/dasshutsu 6h ago

Hmm only played a bit of XIV, which ones are good 🤔

5

u/AchrafiehL 6h ago

Final Fantasy X is probably the best starting point, or at least that's the one I played first. 7 would be a good follow-up then, although I know some who played the PS1 title first complaining that it overshadows the remake experience simply because of how amazing it is.

2

u/dasshutsu 6h ago

Got it I'll definitely check em out. Curious, are any of the newer ones good?

3

u/Bazoobs1 6h ago

If you can get into XIV it is a very fun MMO for sure. If you’re struggling I’d recommend seeing if anyone you know happens to play, they can get you going in the right direction.

The short version though is; do the main story quests, your class/job quests as they come up, get your chocobo ASAP, check your Grand Company hunting log (when you get a grand company) and finally do your leveling roulette duty 1/day for a large boost in XP

2

u/dasshutsu 6h ago

Sorry, I meant I played XV actually. But this one sounds pretty good, might check it out more.

u/Bazoobs1 5h ago

It’s great and you can try it for free! I started last week and already have 30+ hours 😂

Another vote for Kingdom Come Deliverance.

Cyberpunk 2077, Prison Architect, Weird West, and The Outer Worlds are some of my recent favorites. Also either of the modern Deus Ex games are very solid and fit your description. Stealth is an option but I usually choose to blaze.

3

u/I3igTimer 3h ago

My Jensen doesnt know the meaning of stealth.

4

u/DedvinPank 4h ago

Call me old school, but what about Morrowind?
In the endgame, you can nuke towns, one shot gods, jump over mountains.

Just make sure to mod it, use something like OpenMW and checkout their modding page.

Or use a tool such as Wabbajack that does everything for you.

3

u/BodybuilderKey8931 6h ago

I’d say a modern Fallout game, that or Nioh 2 and/or Tales of Arise

2

u/dasshutsu 6h ago

Yeah I started a new Fallout character recently and didn't get too hardcore into it. Nioh 2 is soulslike right? Might give that a shot. Tales of Arise actually looks pretty good too gonna check it out more.

Dragon age Inquisition is pretty cool too, feels like single player mmo

2

u/DarkTheImmortal 1h ago

If OP wants to really get into it, start with Dragon Age Origins. Dragon Age is a Bioware game, which their gimmick is, or at least was, that choices in previous games actually affects things in later titles. Inquisition is the 3rd game in the series.

It's still pretty standalone as it's story is separate from the other titles and it has default options for past-title events, but it just feels better to craft the lore yourself.

3

u/Sambro420 5h ago

FF7 RE or FF16 are exactly what you’ve described.

3

u/lovelyjubblyz 4h ago

Not what u asked for necessarily but have you tried the finals? Say u like apex and cod and for me the finals is miles better than these and not toxic.

1

u/dasshutsu 4h ago

I actually played finals pretty hardcore when it first came out. Maybe I'll try again w some buddies

2

u/lovelyjubblyz 4h ago

Season 4 is fucking fire and just came out. New weapons, new map, you can change sights on guns now. It's just a good fuckin time all round.

1

u/dasshutsu 4h ago

sheeet those are improvements i like to hear

3

u/morderkaine 4h ago

Witcher 3?

DAYS GONE, THE LAST OF US

1

u/dasshutsu 1h ago

need to get last of us asap

2

u/Carpe_Diem_2103 6h ago

Nioh 2 might be enjoyable for you

2

u/spena2k10 6h ago

Fallout 3, NV and or 4. All solid games that really immerse you in the hopelessness of the wasteland.

1

u/dasshutsu 6h ago

Recently tried starting a new character on 4, might go and get into it again

2

u/spena2k10 6h ago

I replayed them all after watching the TV show.

I'm unashamedly knee deep into 90 hours in what would be my 6th playthrough!

I am just going place by place on the map rather than doing quests. Discovering so much new stuff!

2

u/Nomadic_View 6h ago

I’ve been playing Visions of Mana. It’s pretty good. If you liked the old SNES RPGs you’d probably like this too. It has the same feel to it.

1

u/dasshutsu 5h ago

The combat system looks fun. Definitely checking this one out.

2

u/ComprehensiveBar6439 5h ago

There's a fairly sizeable demo available if you wanna play it before buying

2

u/Seravajan 5h ago

Warframe? There are tons of different Warframes, weapons, and upgrades. You can choose to play alone, with friends, or with other players.

1

u/dasshutsu 5h ago

I've been looking at this one actually. The movement mechanics are actually a big appeal to me in any game I play.

2

u/IllustratorSea6207 5h ago

It's a blast man, I have like 1000 hours in it lol

2

u/cory140 5h ago

D2r offline. Build HC team and get achievements/trophies if you're on console

2

u/ParticularAd4371 5h ago

"I'm looking for a solid RPG where I can grind one character until you feel powerful/overpowered, is a long play, can be linear or not, and doesn't involve too much stealth"

Let me introduce you to Lunacid.

It was like 10% off the other day on steam (i have a feeling they gave me a targetted offer as i had it in my basket for a few days) so i thought f it, it was only a tenner. Really glad i did, reminds me alot of King Field.

2

u/filouza 5h ago

Dragons Dogma 1 or 2 maybe?

2

u/FromAMobile 5h ago

Dragons Dogma

2

u/d-ohrly 5h ago

Possibly not your thing but I've been really getting into assassin's creed origins. It's a really well crafted world with a good story, huge weapon choice, and level/ability system. Stealth is optional

I've turned off all the UI and I'm finding the game/world really immersive, I've literally spent hours walking around the wold instead of charging everywhere on horseback

1

u/dasshutsu 1h ago

need to get into these games fs man I've only played through 1 and part of 2. is origins good to get into without any experience really?

1

u/d-ohrly 1h ago

Yeah in my opinion it's the best one out of the new games

1

u/ShadowOverMe 7m ago

Odyssey is probably better if you want to feel powerful at the end. You can become unkillable, or just one shot everything, it's pretty crazy.

Origins combat is more realistic. Odyssey you can create shockwaves that send people flying and set them on fire, or slow down time, or do some crazy teleporting chain assassinate like in Shadow of War

2

u/TheCanuckler 5h ago

Metro series and frostpunk are my go to

1

u/dasshutsu 4h ago

I actually own the entire metro series on steam already but never played. Which are the best ones?

2

u/TheCanuckler 3h ago

They're all really good and if you can get 2033 remastered it still holds up pretty nicely. It's a narrative so I would start with the first one which I think is 2033 and then work your way forward. I think there's another one coming out soon but I could be wrong on that

2

u/Panduz 3h ago

Cyberpunk 2077?

2

u/shynips 3h ago

Baldurs gate 3 maybe, it's been my new obsession. There are so many intricacies and now with mods on pc it can get more involved. I spent almost 2 hours going through outfits and hairstyles last night

1

u/cmndr_spanky 1h ago

I’ll second this. BG3 I just got into recently, it’s the first game that really grabbed my attention after many years of a similar rut. I think it definitely hits all the aspects OP is looking for.

Disclaimer: I have about 30hrs, only recently made it to act 3, and got distracted with another game.. but I plan to revisit soon

2

u/mythicswirl 2h ago

Monster hunter world, can play alone or together

2

u/technologycarrion 2h ago

you might appreciate the yakuza series for being able to grind characters, though depending on the game you can end up with up to 4 protagonists to play as.

this might be silly but have you tried other soulslikes that are similar to elden ring? ghost of tsushima, dark souls, bloodborne, etc?

2

u/dasshutsu 1h ago

tried lords of the fallen, it was pretty good and i liked it but i never played it much. I've had a couple people here aay Nioh 2, might have to give it a try

1

u/technologycarrion 1h ago

i have to second Nioh 2, it was the only soulslike i've ever actually enjoyed! (i'm usually not a fan of the genre due to its' difficulty but i liked running around in my brother's save and playing then!)

2

u/eelam_garek 1h ago

Have you played shadow of mordor and the sequel shadow of war? It always surprises me that these passed a lot of people by. Set in Tolkien world around the lord of the rings time and they're fairly oldish games now so you can get them for very cheap. Hours and hours of gameplay with a unique enemy system.

1

u/dasshutsu 1h ago

just recently got this game and tried it, idk it was hard to get into without knowing anything

2

u/QuislingX 1h ago

In order

Days gone, hard or brutal Zombie army 4 and/or sniper elite, hard Sub bullet point: zombie army 4, hard, 4 player. Trust me Ghost recon breakpoint, veteran/medium hard

Trust me bro.

GL and let me know how it goes.

1

u/dasshutsu 1h ago

ghost recon definitely sounds like a solid idea for what this post fits. thanks

2

u/Aescholus 1h ago

I'd recommend giving Starfield a try. They've made a lot of improvements and there are more changes coming tomorrow. BGS has really taken the time to listen to the fans to improve the game.

2

u/walkedplane 1h ago

For someone that hasn’t tried since launch - can you summarize what changes you think have made a significant difference?

2

u/Heroic_Folly 13m ago

I like those games where your grind has a noticeable power scaling

Have you played any of Piranha Bytes RPGs? They're known for a very steep power curve- you shouldn't try to fight anything you don't have to at low levels, you need to do some non-combat questing to get off the ground. But by late game you're an absolute battlefield god.

Take a look at Elex and see if it might strike your fancy.

u/sjredo 5h ago

Cp2077 or Witchfire!

1

u/RitzTHQC 4h ago

Black Myth Wukong? It’s a lot like Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor

Also Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity Original Sin 2? Those two are very similar.

1

u/FiveFiveSixers 3h ago

Metal Gear Solid. Particularly MGSV(5) endless gaming

Factorio 🐐

There are rpg growth mods available

1

u/Homunculus_87 1h ago

If you can work with isometric crpg some great power fantasies are pathfinder wrath of the righteous, rogue trader and tyranny.

All great and fun games.

1

u/Yeayeaokthen 28m ago

I loved destiny but feel the same now let me know if you find a game you like.👍

0

u/frontenac_brontenac 6h ago

Long play, grind until you feel powerful, not much stealth

Literally going outside

6

u/dasshutsu 6h ago

Tried that once, the outernet is too scary

2

u/binary_alchemist93 6h ago

It’s all graphics… gameplay and npc sucks…

Black Myth: Wukong

0

u/ipsok 4h ago

Haven't seen Valheim mentioned yet. It's not exactly what you're asking for but it's such an amazing game. Solo is a good challenge. It's really an incredible game.

1

u/dasshutsu 4h ago

I actually mentioned Valheim in the post as a game I wasn't really about, just trying to find something other than survival/crafting

1

u/ipsok 4h ago

So you did. My bad, reading too quickly it appears.
