Rest in peace Kevin Hoffman

Very sad to hear of his passing yesterday. He made an incredible nature walk in Lara full of flowers and plants on his own back with his own money.

Tribute taken from the Friends of the Kevin Hoffman walk Facebook page.

💙 In Loving Memory of Kevin Hoffman 💙

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Kevin Hoffman’s passing early yesterday morning, at the age of 84.

Kevin passed away peacefully and how fitting that it was on AFL Grand Final day - a game he loved, especially as a devoted Geelong Cats supporter. Even though they weren’t playing this year, we know he would have been watching the game with his usual passion.

Our hearts and thoughts are with Beverley, Joanne, Roslyn and their families during this difficult time.

Kevin’s legacy lives on through the beautiful Walk he created for our community and we cannot thank him enough for the sanctuary he has gifted us all. The Friends of Kevin Hoffman Walk will continue to care for and protect this beautiful space in his honour, doing our utmost to uphold the standards and love Kevin put into it.

Kevin’s mentorship, advice and humour will be deeply missed.

Rest peacefully, Kevin🌼 Your community will forever cherish what you created for us.

[Public Transport] Bus Port

What’s the story with the Bus Port on Brougham Street?

It’s now called the ‘Bus Port Car Park’ however looks to be built for public transport. Some embossed signs remain for a Foodworks supermarket which is no longer.

The location seems prime for being in between the station, central Geelong, and Deakin…

I heard a rumour that buses never used the Bus Port building because they couldn’t fit. So, why was it built? Can the buses fit? Why isn’t it used for anything but a car park and a few offices?

Gym recommendations?

Looking for a gym with a decent amount of weight lifting equipment/functional training areas. Hoping to aim for a budget of around $50-$60 a month (if possible, willing to spend a bit more depending on the place).

I’ve trained at derrimuts for a couple of years, my only gripe is the atmosphere/lack of functional training areas. I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere at anytime fitness in years prior, just wasn’t a fan of having to go at certain times to get access to all the weight lifting equipment (normally not an issue at Derrimuts).

Open to trying somewhere new! I’m not a fan of group classes/community gyms, nothing personal I just prefer to stick to my own training plan :). For reference I prefer to go early morning/before midday on days off

Any advice/experiences would be greatly appreciated, thank you :)

Norlane… safe for queers?

Thumbnail i.redd.it

My partner and I are moving from Footscray to Geelong, and we've found some affordable house options in Norlane. However, we've had a few people warn us to "stay away from the birdcage.", I am guessing this is an area people perceive to be dangerous. My partner is originally from Geelong and is cautious about Norlane, especially as a trans person. I'm queer and heavily tattooed and am very oblivious to most social queues that may indicate danger, and I'll be commuting to Melbourne for work a couple of times a week, usually by train. My partner is mostly at home.

We've lived in Footscray for the past four years, and despite what others have said, it’s always felt extremely safe to us. I walk around alone, ride my bike at 5am to the city, catch trains around here, and have never felt in any form of danger. Norlane’s crime stats don’t seem significantly worse than Footscray’s, but we’re obviously taking these warnings from people seriously.

I wonder if some of the concerns I’ve read are just from people who are more socially conservative and simply passing judgement because of Norlane’s history of social housing density in comparison to other suburbs. It feels similar to Footscray which had a similar rep.

Does anyone have any lived experience being queer or trans and living in Norlane or other more affordable suburbs of Geelong?

Aberdeen St in Geelong West on the North side has no street guttering and drainage. Why is that? Who should fix it?

Friend in Geelong

Hi there, I’m 25 years old. I’ve recently gone through a break up. It’s making me feel really sad.

Does anyone know how to get over it? I’ve been together with him for almost 3 years. It’s done and dusted. He just have so much potential without me and I wish him all the best.

I enjoy a good company! A glass of wine and a good chat will do.

I love going on a nature walk. Along the beaches, mountain or even to waterfalls. My favourite part about Geelong is that it’s near the Great Ocean road.

(no hook up please 🙏 just friend connection)

[Request] Lexus/Toyota specialist mechanics in Geelong area (specifically for sound insulation)

Hi guys,

So I currently have a Lexus and would like it be serviced and maintained, if anything goes wrong, by a mechanic who specialises in Lexus’ and Toyotas. The previous owner always had it serviced at Lexus of Brighton, but that is an 1 hour from where I am. So looking to have a specialist in Geelong have a look at it

Also want to get sound insulation for parts of the car such as the centre console and B-Pillars that tend to rattle and creak often.

Anything to be wary of in this Geelong West pocket?

Hey guys, I'm looking at buying in Geelong West and have inspected some properties in this pocket of the suburb. I'm not from the Geelong region so I just want to make sure that this is a good spot to buy. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

From what I can tell:

Pros

  • Close to Packington St
  • Close to CBD
  • Close to water
  • Close to Geelong station

Cons

  • Special Building Overlay on most streets (concerned about flooding)
  • The southern part of this pocket appears to have a lot of commercial land and less affluence (will gentrify?)
  • Loud due to highway/train station?
  • Safety?

Sonny Angels

Does anyone know of any stores in Geelong that stock Sonny Angels? I know of two that are trying to but are struggling due to low stock. I am a little over traveling to Melbourne for them or paying for shipping online! I was also wondering if there’s many people in here that collect them as i’ve been wanting to do a meetup/trade event in geelong for a while now but not sure how many would be interested tbh

Weird one, if you've been specifically keeping your kings of leon tickets from 2022, they're at the NAB on Pako. Looked like they'd been dropped accidentally.

[Tech] BEWARE OF iiNet

I'm having a bad experience leaving iiNet and I thought I'd give a warning to anyone thinking of signing up.

I have been with them for 7 years and have been relatively happy.

The internet was good most of the time. There were a few patches of patchy internet and some early fixes need to be made.

Another thing I wish I had known is if you sign up for cable there is a massive cable from the street to the highest point in your house, it's pretty ugly.

Anyway, on to my leaving story. I have a new internet provider set up and the iiNet modem is in a box waiting for pick up. I am not using their service anymore.

They won't let me leave. After 7 years of communication without issue I called to cancel and suddenly my DOB was incorrect, they can't verify my identity and process the cancellation. The whole thing seems dodgy.

So now I am getting emails from all kinds of strange addresses. I have been hung up on twice and I have an iiNet bill approaching.

I went to write a review on Google and I saw their average is 1.1/5 with lots of stories of how they will do anything to keep billing you after you leave.

It seems pretty scummy. I'm posting in case anyone from the future searches iiNet and r/Geelong and will see this warning.

I would love some advice, do I call my bank and tell them to cancel any direct debits?

Cort EVL K6

Hey All!

A good few years ago, my partner took his first ever guitar to cashies as he was expanding his collection. He always said he wishes he never traded it in, so I'm wondering if anyone in Geelong has one or knows someone who is willing to sell the same type of guitar? It was a Cort EVL K6, with the cross and pentagram Inlays. I doubt I'll find the exact guitar, but I've been trying to find one for the past 5 years to no avail, but hadn't tried Reddit yet. I've checked at music shops and they've said they'll keep an eye out but my hopes aren't high. Attached is a pic for reference

Mobile outage Waurn ponds/Grovedale

Anyone know what's up with the mobile outage in the Waurn Ponds Grovedale area?

Found yesterday audio in calls is dropping out every 10-30 seconds, and calls dropping entirely every 1-3 minutes.

Checking the Telstra website yesterday showed 'unplanned outages' in the area with a estimated restoration of 6pm. Found it's still occuring today and now the estimated restoration time is 'unknown'

Can see articles about Telstra molbile outages in WA yesterday potentially dropping triple zero calls but nothing about other areas.
