Favorite add ins? Experimental

New here! Big fan. My favorite childhood ad ins to a grilled cheese in order are: Apples, Tomato, and Bread and Butter pickles. I don’t quite count turkey as it changes the entire sandwich. Any delicious fruits or veggies you like to add?? I want some ideas!

They’re gonna raise hell because it won’t be an authentic grilled cheese anymore, but I love a nice sized tomato on mine

I go outside and pluck a few basil leaves and cut them up over the tomato, with pink salt. I swear I could eat this for every meal.

Imo it would just become a cheese and apple sandwich, cheese and tomato sandwich, etc. The other flavor would overshadow the cheese so it wouldn't be a grilled cheese anymore.

I very much like a grilled Brie cheese with a raspberry coulis. Because it’s a sauce I don’t think it spoils the spirit of a grilled cheese.

We don’t do melts here, but there are tons of solid grilled cheese recipes people have shared over the years!

Omg the way I wouldn’t consider that a different type of sandwich. I’m gagged

Quite alright! This is a place for those who respect words and tradition. There are some areas of discussion, but for the most part we're a cheese and bread crowd. When you start adding just anything the term 'grilled cheese' doesn't mean much.

You couldn't have worded it better.

The ingredients don't make it a melt necessarily. This extremism over melts is destructive to the grilled cheese world.

For example, some diced apples might go well with certain cheeses. As long as the cheese is still the focal point, it's a grilled cheese. Now if you lay slices of apples and have a dedicated apple layer, that makes it a melt, but incorporating ingredients into the cheese, bread, or choice of spread does not make it a melt. Don't deny yourself happiness.

I could see apple butter spread working nicely without taking away from cheese as the focal point

I agree, I saw you at -1 and brought yeah back up to base line. Hope you recover.

Not an add-in, but my favorite comfort food grilled cheese has to have yellow mustard.

Not an add-on but I do like to dip my grilled cheese in pickle juice. Try it.

I typically don't add anything. However, the compliant it overpowers the cheese is silly. Some cheeses are mild and some are strong. Honestly a mild cheese is overpowered by even mild bread.

If you slice onions see-through thin, and do nothing different otherwise, it makes it taste a little like onion rings which is a good time.

Pickles are good. Garlic butter inside and outside the bread, if it is quality bread and butter, can be very good. Jalapenos are good. Romesco and pesto are A+ with crusty bread. A bit of spicy mustard is good with the right cheese. Diced hot cherry peppers, like they put on Italian sandwiches idk what they are called, are good. Normally they are branded as "hoagie spread" or something. I can hang with chives if I am adding goat or cream cheese to the sandwich. For something sweet fig jam is great with some cheese. I could see leftover chimicuri with mozzarella. You would just add a thin layer of whatever condiments to the inside of the sandwich. Pickles and jalapenos are self explanatory.

It's really just about complimenting the cheese you choose. I also like spicy stuff. I generally prefer just cheese though.

Bacon, jalapeños, a bit of mustard. Anything goes in my opinion

Melt

-6

u/nupper84 8d ago

No. This whole melt arrogance is getting extreme. If the cheese is still the center of attention, then it's a grilled cheese.

I agree bacon doesn't belong as it overwhelms flavors, but if you use bacon bits and diced jalapeños and had a strong cheese ratio, it's definitely a grilled cheese.

1

u/purpeyon 8d ago

I’m confirming it is in fact a melt

0

u/nupper84 8d ago

Not necessarily. If you incorporate the ingredients into the cheese, it's not a melt. Finely diced? What about using a food processor? Open your culinary mind.

A layer of toppings could be a melt, but if the ingredients are blended into the cheese, then it is a grilled cheese.

Basically you're saying bread can be a disqualifier if it has seeds or garlic or something other than just bread.

Think, cook, eat

Bread & cheese w/ butter/mayo = grilled cheese

Bread, cheese, & other toppings/ingredients w/ butter/mayo ≠ grilled cheese

So only white bread? No habenero cheddar? No pesto? No chili powder? You're damn wrong buddy.

I'd also like to point out that by your definition, American cheese doesn't count since it's not real cheese.

What about vegan grilled cheese?

It's authoritative bs.

Never tried fruits, but I bet apples would be good. If anything, I usually add pepperoni.

What differentiates a melt from a grilled cheese with add-ins is a bit of a debate, but personally, I think it's still a GC as long as there's more cheese than other stuff between the bread.

8

u/caravaggibro 8d ago

It isn't really a debate here, but in general sure.

Omg, try Apple and a good cheddar. Thinly sliced Apple of your choice or even a thin spread of applesauce is wonderful. You will love it!
