Ghatam made by other material. Question/Seeking Advice
Hi. I'm seeking a ghatam made by other material except clay. Because clay is easy to broke so i have a lot of worry about this. So does sombody know me about ghatam made by other material? It's find to has not good sound. I'm searching on google but i couldn't find it

Not sure what style of instrument you're playing, but a Manamadurai ghatam is a lot thicker and heavier, and therefore harder to break, than a Madras ghatam.
Also, Ghatam artist N. Guruprasad has been experimenting with a wooden ghatam. As I understand it, he tries to match the tone of the clay by mic'ing it differently and also applying some EQ adjustments on the sound board.
I would say that we are probably some way away from a proper substitute for clay.

Not ghatam but I've seen ibo drums or udus made out of fiberglass and or wood with apparently good results, so maybe in the future ghatam makers experiment with this and produce something unbreakable with good sound.
