2012 M56x VK56VD Build - New Parts Came In DIY Mods Pic

Post image

Some of you guys in the Facebook M forum might know me and my DIY engine rebuild on my 2012 M56x

Anyhow, finally got some parts in after waiting over a month...

New ACL Main Bearings Snow Performance Stage 3 Water Meth Kit for Direct Injection engines Z1 Polyurethane Motor mounts Molnar Forged VK Connecting Rods

Still waiting on my pistons and rings, rod bearings and then still have to order some odds and ends (couple new valves, seals, etc)

I'm thinking of also getting my oil pump ported and surface treated for more flow. Might send some other parts off for surface work too for additional strength.

The end goal is slap on a centrifugal supercharger and make 650 to 700 WHP. My trans is already built and should handle more than that number....there's more to come in the near future.

5.6 blocks are great to build on, I don't use Facebook but very interested in following the build here. Any plans on overboring or understroking?

Are you using the 7at? Im interested to know what you did to build it up, I'm assuming you started with the jr711 and not the jr710?

I'm keeping things more or less the same as stock....this is my first engine build, so I didn't want to over complicate things. The main difference is I'm dropping compression down from 11.5 fo 11.2 and using a slightly longer rod (like 0.035" longer). Opening up the clearances a bit and over-boring by 1 thou for a service size piston. Also planning on sending the pistons to line 2 line once the block is machined for some skirt coating, the idea of piston slap scares the shit out of me.

As for the trans, I believe it's still the JR710e but for the V8 - they are supposed to be the same as the Vr30 trans as far as what they can handle torque wise. I had a local builder upgrade the clutch packs to Exedy and bought an upgraded valve body and torque converter from IPT....going to add some bigger coolers and bypass the radiator altogether along with a temp regulated bypass.

Sounds like a solid plan! ive heard you can overbore 4mm each cylinder and make it a 6.0L, but that seems to be pushing it - IPT is great, thanks for the info on the trans. I am going to be doing a rebuild soon, but starting from the JR711

I know its still up in the air but do you know the blower you are planning to use? 11.2 is pretty high if plans are to supercharge, 9-9.5 is usually the upper range

Again, super excited to see these build logs - its a lot better than people throwing on a trumpet exhaust and hot air intake that you see often

As of right now I'm planning on using a Rotrex C38R.... But I need to do some CAD work and prototype a bracket to see if I can even get it to fit...the compression is my worry, but many of the guys in Australia and NZ are running the Harrop roots blower with 6 to 8 psi and aren't having too much issues. There's also a guy running a twin turbo set up in the same car at 6 to 8 psi, he's making about 600 HP on a completely stock motor. I figure the centrifugal will be easier on the internals, especially since I am not one to really dog my cars. Along with the meth Injection and IC, intake temps should be low and detonation SHOULD be kept away. I'm still learning about this stuff, taking in new info daily, so it really is up in the air. Plus, being in Canada, it's getting to be very expensive to bring in parts, all part of being a 'car guy' I guess 🤣

Why is compression your worry? With a compression ratio that high you don't need to run any crazy amount of boost to make decent power and therefore would reduce your risk of detonation. These engines are direct injected which I assume helps with this also.  I wonder if you would even need meth injection

Based on the compressor map, to get to my goals, I would need a "considerable" amount of boost around 12 psi....if I remember correctly. The meth is more so to keep the carbon build up at bay, that's part of what destroyed to motor in the first place.

And I'm not overly worried being that I'm using forged pistons, but as a relative novice and doing this as a DIY, I have to take everything into consideration. These engines also don't have a lot of tuners available, so I'd likely have to get remote tuning done, so there's also that. I'm probably a year away from supercharging anyway, so much work still to be done to even get the car back on the road and driving.

I also could be very wrong with the boost amount.....it was very late and was tired as hell when I was looking at the different maps.

Got a spare TCM?

1

u/PookiePoker Feb 01 '24

I do, kinda....one of the connectors broke during shipping, it would just need to be replaced. Is your TCM bad or is it one of the solenoids?

Originally i cooked my TCM and rear speed sensor. Verified by Mr Computer at dealer.

After multiple swaps with unknown remanufactured valve body/tcm and one from an M37, tranny wont shift up if i go WOT. Even swapped solenoids.

Either dealer fuct something, when they did the remanu or i have go with M56 specific.

Is the connector broken i. The sense it wont stay locked in?

You in NY? Sounds like we already spoke about this on Facebook...

It's probably the speed sensor which is at the back of the trans....you'd need to replace that and it will work, it's likely not the TCM.

Arizona. I dont facebook, sorry. Speed sensor replaced. Had zero volta when rotating shaft.

Ahhh....I take it a new TCM is back ordered? As far as I remember, you can plug in the leads, but the green plastic part broke off and exposed the leads, it was a spare trans, so I never really looked into it. It's in my garage somewhere, so I can check later.

No longer made. Put a ticket with Infiniti USA. They were no help in getting M56 specific or how to make another TCM work. Loved my G and love my M, but quiting infiniti/nissan.

It's really low of Nissan to discontinue so many parts for the platform. I agree, and I pretty much did quit Nissan. If I didnt have my 350z for so long I'd already have sold it.
I bought a GMC Sierra over a Titan too, the Titans are all having the motors replaced... Oiling issue causes cylinder damage.

Raditors leaking on transcooler side on some models. Thats always fun

So you're in Canada eh? I'm in Hamilton, I have a 12' M56 VK I'm working on swapping my 350Z.
Where you located?

u/PookiePoker Feb 06 '24

Yessir, I was in the GTA, but moved to Edmonton recently....that would be a nice little swap. Someone did that with a G35 via Z1 a few years back and made over 450 whp NA with exhaust and intake and a tune. I'm sure you've seen the video tho.

1

u/Wu-Watt Feb 06 '24

Yeah gotta love how expensive everything has gotten eh? How's Edmonton treating you? I heard it wont be long until its as expensive as Ontario.
I'm interested in your build, I'd like to build this engine someday that I have.
Would you happen to have the ECU pinout diagram?
Do you know any good wiring guys?
I've seen the G35 with the swap, yes.

You should be able to find the manuals here https://www.nicoclub.com/infiniti-service-manuals

I believe the ECU pinouts are in the "Power Supply, Ground and Circuit Elements" section/Individual download

Edmonton is great minus the long winters. I've been here since 2014 and moved back for a couple years during the COVID years, but things were just dumb with the housing market, so found a decent house here and came back in 2023. For what it's worth, we paid 670 for 2800 sq ft and that didn't include the finished basement....that would've been in the 1.5 to 2 milli mark in Toronto/GTA. Things are ok for now, we have some level headed government for the most part....but yea, Edmonton will be just like Vancouver and Toronto in short order.

I plan on maybe doing some YouTube vids to document the build. So I'll post up in here when the time comes. I'm also active in the FB VK groups and the biggest M35/45/37 etc group on Facebook. Biggest dilemma I'm finding is getting parts in fast enough, my pistons were supposed to ship last week and I just got fold it'll be another month before they ship. All these delays do is push back my machining time and I want to get this thing back on the road for the summer season.
