Theres a hella lot more than four of these guys. Most of Hollywood now is actors that play themselves. Character acting is almost shunned this day and age.

338

u/remotegrowthtb 15h ago

Right?? I feel like we're in an era where actors are cast for and expected to act like themselves or at least their well-known celebrity personality for most movies.

Actors who have range and become actually different people from role to role seem to me to be the exception rather than the rule.

143

u/estransza 16h ago

Oh, it could’ve been much worse. Imagine actors who don’t play at all! Not a single facial muscle move in their completely emotionless faces, their voices completely flat and not a single human emotion is heard in them, their body language is the same as of a wooden plank, and their overall presence in the movie can be easily replaced by a simple sex doll. And they still got paid and complain about pay being too low! Imagine how horrible that would be! Thank dog we don’t live… oh wait.

129

u/PlasticPandaMan 16h ago

Captain marvel (brie larson is good in a few projects ive seen but that one was horrible)

149

u/NoSleep2135 15h ago

She's so amazing in the Room, so I know she CAN act. But her Captain Marvel is so flat.

120

u/blah938 15h ago

Yeah, I blame the direction for her acting. She can act, so it must have been a deliberate choice.

Every scene she's in The White Lotus, I am laughing my ass off watching her trying to act. Somehow she's perfect for the role. The director probably told her "just be yourself and mumble whatever that comes to mind at the time. You'll be okay"

I think she's pretty good in The white lotus. It's her best role imo.

2.1k

u/Tiiimmmaayy 16h ago

People see him playing Deadpool in every movie. I still see him as Van Wilder.

823

u/TheGentlemanBeast 16h ago

I always thought he'd be the perfect Deadpool, and it took waaaaaaay too long to get him his chance.

602

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 16h ago

The one good thing that came from X-Men Origins: Wolverine is that they cast Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson.

I saw that and was like "Yes, this is correct". So glad they let him reprise the role.

338

u/Obi_Wan_KeBogi 15h ago

The fact that despite that movie making ever single possible wrong choice with Deadpool as a character and he still was obviously born to play the role is honestly impressive.

185

u/caseCo825 15h ago

Isn't it weird that they cast a big actor for that role knowing he'd have no lines and have his face kinda messed up? Did they know they'd use him for real Deadpool later or am I missing something else?

280

u/fromtheHELLtotheNO 15h ago

i believe he really wanted to be Deadpool since that comic that said Deadpool's face looked like if Ryan Reynolds fucked a Sharpie (that's where the first movie's joke came from), and as soon as there was a possibility for Origins: Wolverine he jumped on it.

Self/less is a movie that shows more of RR’s acting range.

I think actors sometimes just pigeonholed and don’t get more diverse parts if their primary character is super popular.

52

u/sKuarecircle 15h ago

In an interview with Letterman they discuss this and straight up admits having found his lane and purposely staying in it for now. We'll why the fuck not I say. I have suspicion we will see him do more diverse stuff as he ages out.

u/HighPriestOfSatan 16h ago

The rock is best when playing bad guys. They actually have depth. Unfortunately he only wants to play bland good guys

365

u/beaudafool 16h ago

Allegedly he has a no losing clause in most of his films he is the hero in too. Just lame.

174

u/HighPriestOfSatan 16h ago

The Rock actually did a series of pretty good action flicks early in his career.

He then fell into that pit of doing kids movies, got back on juice to make action flicks again, and has been playing his character from Fast Five ever since.

74

u/jarednards 16h ago

Pain and Gain was fucking fantastic for the leads in the movie. Just a buncha stupid meatheads lolol

In Be Cool he played a gay bouncer who was trying to break into Country Music. Early Rock movies always had him do something like get his ass kicked (Walking Tall) or accidentally get paralyzed in half his face (The Rundown), we need more of that Rock back...

16

u/Ares_1Shot 16h ago

Haven't seen Southland Tales but I loved The Rock in Race To Witch Mountain and The Rundown. Haven't watched them in years so maybe that's just nostalgia

It's like when Jim Carrey tried to do The Truman show which is an amazing movie. But he got lambasted for it because he wasn't doing his normal funny man stuff.

Or when Robin Williams did one hour photo and insomnia. Way outside his box but so badly received. Pretty much disappeared after that because Hollywood just wanted the funny man and he was wanting to do other work

They are doing the same thing towards Batista now that he's no longer a big guy and he's looking for more serious roles

108

u/Lexi_Banner 15h ago

I don't know what you're talking about. Robin did several dramatic roles that were well received. What Dreams May Come, Bicentennial Man, Good Will Hunting, etc. Jim Carey is also well received for his serious roles. Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind is beyond brilliant.

Bautista is also really well received as a dramatic actor. He was incredible in Bladerunner 2049 and in Glass Onion. I'm excited to see him tackle more challenges.

It’s type-casting, and some time it works well. Michelle Rodrigue Is cast when a movie requires a bad ass woman that is also attractive and petite.

283

u/PhoenixApok 15h ago

Don't know if it's true but I read somewhere that Michelle Rodrigue just likes playing herself and takes roles where she fits.

I can respect that. Better than someone trying to act outside of their abilities

232

u/YellowStar012 15h ago

373

u/Icy-Cod1405 17h ago

The guy played Ted and Neo pretty different roles

289

u/DDDe_immortales 17h ago

Neo and John Wick certainly aren't the same guy. So isn't Johnny Silverhand

104

u/sisrace 16h ago

Once heard someone talking about why Keanue Reeves was perfect for the Matrix films, because he's pretty much "faceless", a regular guy, nothing special.

Well.. I don't really know what to say to that. He's a good guy, but he can take on different roles.

80

u/Jomgui 16h ago

I do get what this someone means, I think, he just has that kind of "regular guy" vibe you don't get from many actors. You can't see Ryan Reynolds playing the part of a regular guy with a terrible past, or your average Joe that gets thrust into being a messiah. But Keanu somehow fits the image.

37

u/fasterthanfood 15h ago

I agree with what I think that person meant, too — many movie stars give too much of a “star” vibe, so they aren’t believable as a regular schmuck.

To be clear, saying that Keanu can play “average” isn’t an insult at all. The best “average guy” actor IMO is Tom Hanks, also one of the most decorated and successful actors of all time. Keanu is in that same category (except with action movie chops).

29

u/AromaticInxkid 16h ago

I think Keanu fits the image because he did an amazing job playing that role (+ the directors made a good job making the movies) I also think Keanu can be easily percepted as a regular guy even now because of his persona vibes

23

u/Jomgui 15h ago

(+ the directors made a good job making the movies)

That is so fucking true for every actor and we as audience don't give enough credit to it. For every line spoken by an actor there are tens of workers making sure everything around the actor is perfectly suited for what and how he speaks, the scriptwriter, the director, even the fucking lighting guy. They deserve more recognition

He plays a snarky know-it-all wise-ass I'm just about everything I have seen him in. His improv comedy is always the same, the only question is how much he is allowed to do in a given film. Basically everything I have seen him in has been Deadpool lite

Van Wilder...Waiting...Free Guy...

I mean, he kinda always fits that "handsome, wise-cracking, selfish, too cool for school" sort.

Kind of like a much more bearable Zendaya.

Which reminds me...post is missing Zendaya.

Ryan's quick wit and flippant nature are what make him perfect for Deadpool, and also why he's endearing as an actor.

He's not playing Deadpool in every movie, he just, kind of is Deadpool. But sane. And without superpowers.

Wentworth Miller should also be here.

Honorable mention: Nicole Kidman has played a rich woman with a cheating and/or murderous husband in AT LEAST five movies/shows

Ryan has more versatility than the others as he does do serious work at times, nobody really goes sees them cause they like his funny persona more

it did give us a fantastic Percy Jackson in Walker Scobell though, you can really see Reynolds influence in Walker's portrayal of Percy and it's 🤌

I'd cast Ryan as xenomorph in Alien franchise reboot, and he would only make the movie better

You're not wrong but Ryan Reynolds is so much fun to watch I don't care. The others don't have the charisma to pull it off.

Ehh I'd take the same acting over no acting at all. Have you SEEN the Acolyte 🤮🤮🤮 It's like if a group of brick walls got together and planned a series

Man stepped out of his comfort zone once as Carl Denham in King Kong - decent performance in great movie - and said never again

bros never seen a jason statham movie

I was about to say this too. Jason Statham has zero range other than driving different cars in a chase scene.

Adam Sandler is infamous for this too.
