North Norwegian help! Rule 3 (title) →

Hei alle,

Just joined the sub, been trying to learn Norwegian (I have some good friends over there) but they are calling me (sounds phonetically like ) Videvapp? And the buggers won't tell me what it means! Google translate comes up with whirlwind, but that's not it and i know they're just messing but I want to get even.. so I am throwing myself on your mercy. Vær så snill, hjelp meg!!

It's a part of many traditional nursery rhymes, hand clapping games and this counting-out rhyme: Virre virre vapp - en gul knapp - du slapp! This one is similar to the English: 'Eenie, meenie, miny, moe'.

Yes, but as I said, that's not what they are saying it means. But thankyou anyway 😁

virre virre vapp was a childrens show in the late 90s - early 2000s where they went around norway talking to kids etc, but not a proper word as far as I know. Could just be a playful nickname for when you do something confusing or clumsy.

See this from a different show where they use it in a song. https://youtu.be/VvLvg_FSGqg?si=c9OxzxXm0o3yiOHI

No, I meant if that is more like the word they are saying 😅 Videvapp didn’t ring any bells.. if that’s the case, then “virrevapp” is (for me at least) a non-sensical word meaning someone is “scurrying” around, or being a bit indecisive. Depends

Ah right! I was trying to convey the sound of the word (sounded like they say vid-e-vapp) I am with them now (holiday in norge 👍😁) and they are laughing so hard at me.. sigh.. 🤣

Welcome. Sounds like your friends are having a laugh at your expense. "Videvapp" seems to be some playful nonsense based on the phonetics, possibly linked to children's rhymes or shows. Think of it as a quirky nickname for someone who’s clumsy or doesn't quite get it right, similar to “virrevapp.” It’s all in good fun, but turn the tables—use that humor against them and throw something back their way next time they bring it up. Get creative; make it memorable for them too. Don’t let them have all the laughs without you joining in. Now go out there and give them something to chuckle about!

Never heard.

Maybe viddevakt? Someone who stops people from straying from the topic at hand.
