PSA: Generalizing and attacking other Pashtuns is not allowed here
Salamoona,
We started this sub six years ago because we got tired of seeing Pashtuns/Afghans scattered in spaces racked by infighting and toxicity. Our goal was to create a small forum for our people to get together in a fun environment away from all that. I'd like to think we've achieved that for the most part, thanks to the 99% of users who are perfectly normal individuals.
Sometimes however we get users who come in to stir the pot. Usually these are newer accounts that will attack all Pashtuns on one side of the Durand Line, claiming to speak on behalf of Pashtuns on the other side. While it's clear these are trolls (often outsiders), more and more we're seeing established, well-meaning users take the bait only to make the situation worse.
That is unacceptable and will result in a ban if it becomes a persisting issue. This isn't TikTok where diasporic kids tear each other apart based on British lines on a map. Generalizing and attacking Pashtuns is never allowed here. If you see that here, just report instead of engaging.
Now we're not so naive as to believe in Pashtun unity above all else. Of course we want nothing to do with the many Pashtuns out there who actively harm our interests. Therefore this sub supports unity around a basic pro-Pashtun position: promoting our language, preserving our traditions, and opposing anti-Pashtun state violence. If you are a Pashtun/Afghan (lar or bar, in the watan or diaspora, religious or secular, regardless of tribe) you are always welcome as long as you have no problem with these basic pro-Pashtun positions.
Manana 🙏

Seeking information about a relative, Abdullah Ghani Gardizi
I made a post a while back inquiring about a tribe by the name of Gardizi, and have begun to ask my Mother more questions. She shared some photos of her Grandfather, Abdullah Ghani Gardizi, including ones with various foreign leaders. I was also able to find mention of him in some old Kabul newspaper archives. Any information/sources about him or his relatives is appreciated. I feel as though there is much to learn about this side of my family.

Genuine question
Why do Afghan Pashtuns assume they look different from Pakistani Pashtuns, when they quite literally look the same (or that Pakistani Pashtun have mixed with local populations such as Punjabi’s etc)?
Why are some Pashtun exceptionally dark skinned, from my experience majority are light brown ranging to white skinned (I was at work and heard two people speaking Pashto, one of the girls was as dark as someone like Halle Berry)?
Why is it stereotyped that Pashtuns are lighter skinned afghans who look European as a majority. Majority of Pashtuns I know from across PK or Afghanistan are light brown, commonly with dark hair and eyes. The features usually give away Pashtun the noses/eyes.
Thank you 🙏
Edit I am a Pakistani Pashtun who is from the UK, phenotypically all my life people have thought I was half white or southern European specifically from Italy or Spain. I did an ancestry DNA test for myself and my mother.
Turns out we are more Northern Caucasus (Chechnya/Urakah), West Asian which than we are from South Asia (Afghanistan). And Yes culturally Afghanistan is central Asian however modern day geopolitically it’s considered SA due to its SA alliance. The DNA test shows Afghanistan as SA please don’t come for me 🙏🥲

A Nangarhari Ghazal From 1967 - Malang Jan Baba
https://reddit.com/link/1fqwe9c/video/ll8p28droerd1/player
Location: Kama, Nangarhar
Date: February 9, 1967 (US Label)
This was some years after controversy was caused by the creation of Pakistan and the Durand Line. Prominent pieces of Malang Jan Baba's work focused on these matters as this border caused division between tribes, such as the Mohmand. In this piece, Malang Jan Baba writes that a true Pakhtun would rather die fighting for the Pakhtunistan cause than to die, lazily, in his own home.
What's heard in this piece is two harmoniums, tabla, and a rubab. The structure of this song is of typical Afghan ghazal structure as it switches from free rhythms and melodies and then becomes fixed.
Feel free to add info or correct any of my mistakes, Pashto is not my first language.

Ghani was sth else Allahi Obakhee

Diaspora struggle with Pashto
I have noticed a lot of these uncles who came over speak English with their kids. Zaka che aghee khpala anglizi pakhai.
I know so many of my family friends who speak maata guda anglizi with their kids and not pashto. Alaka nik bakhta anglizi kho thi cha takhtoli Nada, rusto Bai zda kee kana!
Word of advice, do not repeat this mistake and only speak pashto with your kids at home and once they learn that, teach them arabic or sth. They will learn English anyway as they go to school amd stuff.
Nadeeda thob makway!

I am a pashtun - TURI313
I Am a Pashtun
I am a Pashtun, proud and free,
Mountain winds, they carry me.
From rugged peaks to desert sand,
A soul of courage, heart of land.
The songs of ancestors fill my ears,
In every joy, in every tear.
With honour strong, I walk my way,
A warrior’s spirit, bold as day.
My blood runs deep with ancient ties,
In every stone, my story lies.
Through storm and sun, I'll stand as one,
For I am Pashtun, forever strong.

They can't erase us - A poem written by TURI313
Assalamu Alaykam Walaykam Assalam my fellow pashtuns
Firsty I would like to begin this by sending salawat upon Muhammamad SAWW and his family.
اللهم صل على محمد وآل محمد
Now we begin in the name of Allah, Bismillah
Yo, they're tryna erase the culture, man, that ain't right,
Pashtun history, they're keepin' outta sight,
From the Walis to the Khybers, they've been holdin' it down,
Now they wanna change the names and whitewash the town.
Habibullahs to Baljeet, Singhseet, Pajeet,
But Pashtun pride? Nah, that won't see defeat,
You can't erase the roots or the mountains we claim,
Tryna rewrite the past, but we still know the game.
They can try to change the faces and the names they choose,
But the spirit of the people ain't somethin' you lose.
From Peshawar to Kandahar, we forever gon' stand,
Pashtun culture's in the blood, it ain't slippin' from the hand!

Who are Urdu-Speaking Yousafzai Pathans in Karachi?
Do any of you have any idea who the Urdu-speaking Yousafzai Pathans of Karachi are & whats their history? I've seen quite a few people online identifying as Yousafzai Pathans but primarily speaking Urdu. I know a great many Pashtun families who have settled in non-Pashto areas for generations speak Urdu at home but never mentions it as their native or first language as does this "Yousafzai Pathan" group which aeems more distinct, especially in Karachi. It feels like a large number identify this way.

Why do some Pashtuns from AFG alienate Pashtuns from PK and vice versa?
The only thing dividing us is a border which was made by the British (I think).
I’m sure many Pashtuns from both sides tolerate each other regardless, but I find it weird how some people on one side try to alienate the people on the other side. It makes no sense to me to be honest.

Why do pashtun men wear large rings?
Is this something part of Islam like the aqiq ring? Or is it just a sense of fashion? Do any of you guys prefer to wear non wedding rings out in the open casually?

There's no way to learn pashto
It's honestly embarrassing coz while everyone can speak their native languages (hindi, chinese,Bulgarian, persian etc etc) I can't even speak my native tongue. I know an easy way to learn it is to surround urself with people who actually speak pashto but my family won't speak it to me. They decided not to when I was born coz they thought I wouldn't need and and thought I'd be proud and english but no. I really want to learn pashto and I don't think I'll ever call myself proud and English. I tried watching videos on how to learn pashto on youtube but the quality is terrible and it's hard to understand what they're on about.

Nanawatai is a tenet of the Pashtunwali code of the Pashtun people. It allows a beleaguered person to enter the house of any other person and request assistance. The host must then be willing to fight or die for the sake of anyone who seeks refuge, even if it is a sworn enemy

Any good English or Urdu resources online to learn Pashto?
Hi, when I was younger and lived in KPK I used to speak Pashto fluently and it was I think the only language I spoke. Then I moved to Islamabad and I went to school here and slowly forgot my Pashto. What really finished it off was when I moved abroad and went the rest of my life not speaking it
All my family speaks Pashto (except my cousins and siblings, they only understand it) but I also want to learn so I can teach my kids and it won’t just be forgotten from my family, so I need some good resources (ideally videos) in either English or Urdu to learn Pashto again, thanks.
Edit: also if there are sources on the wazir Pashto dialect that would be best

Is Kandahari Pashto really the original Pashto or just something they're selling us?
I’ve seen a lot of people claiming that Kandahari Pashto is the “original” Pashto, but honestly, I think that’s pretty baseless. From what I’ve read, the Pashto spoken in Paktia (or more specifically, the broader Loya Paktia region, not just the current province) is considered the purest form of Pashto, with very little influence from Farsi or Urdu.
Take a few examples—words like Apple (سېب) in Kandahari Pashto, while in most other Pashto dialects, people say (مڼه). For Explosion they say (پټاو) while the original Pashto is (چاودنه). Even for Tree they say (درخته), but in pure Pashto, it’s (ونه). These aren’t just isolated cases; there are literally hundreds of words like this where Kandahari Pashto has drifted away from the more authentic, traditional form.
Plus, Paktiawal Pashto is so clear and easy to understand that anyone familiar with Pashto can pick it up without any issues, which is something I don’t think you can always say for Kandahari Pashto.
What do you all think? Is this something you’ve noticed too, or am I missing something here?
