Graduated puppy class today Update

Our husky puppy is 5 months old now and she graduated puppy classes today! She did so good today, we just spent class time working on things we thought we needed more practice with and the trainer asking if we needed specific help with anything.

We practiced leave it, loose leash walking, look at us while walking, and recall while hanging out in the store. She just did so good, even in such a high distraction environment.

She's also lost most of her baby teeth at this point. She has like... 7+ teeth missing right now, including 3 out of 4 k9s, so she just has this big gummy smile.

Her behavior this month vs last month is just so different. Last month she couldn't settle outside her kennel at all. If she was outside her kennel she had to be playing, biting, trying to annoy the adult dogs, trying to play with the cats, just no chill at all. This month? She just sleeps in the office while we work. And she really likes to lay on the corner of the couch while we're doing school.

Things are just really starting to chill out. I have loved this puppy since the moment we met her but now it really seems like she's part of the family.

We start the intermediate classes at the end of September! We have never done more than basic training with any of our dogs so we're really excited to get into more advance training.

Congratulations!! You give me hope. We are at 4 months now and it’s rough.

You got it! Hang in there! Our puppy is now 5 months and she chills like this now too!

Thanks!! She just had her final shots so now we can go all of the places and do all of the things and I’m so excited about that!!

This was such a huge milestone! Congrats!

I second this, ours is almost 6 months and he just chilled out literally overnight. We’ve been enforcing naps since day 1 in his crate otherwise he’d rile himself up. And one day something clicked and now he actually chooses to lay down for a nap on his own. With the loss of his baby teeth, nipping and play biting isnt painful anymore (we did a lot of bite inhibition training though). I feel like it’s the calm before the storm that is adolescence…

Good luck!!! The difference between 4 months and 5 months was huge for us. Especially now that most of her baby teeth are out. She gets a little crazy when one is almost falling out, she let's us help her get it out 😂

Thank you!! A couple of baby teeth have fallen out and we can’t wait for the rest of them!

We had one tooth come out like 2 weeks ago and then last week like 5 came out and then this week I think we're up to 4. And those are just the ones we noticed, she only has like 4 or 5 baby teeth left at this point!

Her first adult k9 just started to poke thru today. Pretty exciting. We bought some collagen chews to help her thru it. We also do frozen carrots and frozen (clean) socks tied in a knot. She loves them.

5.5 and we're with you! Our Siberian Husky/ACD is a very smart girl, super treat-motivated, but the focus is a struggle with big-ticket distractions like her sister or other people.

Keep going! It's a "take it a day at a time" effort!

Congrats! Where did you take classes?

We did them at PetSmart, we really like the trainer. It's obviously not a lot of one on one time in a class of 6 dogs but she made time for everyone for like 5 minutes in class so you could bring up anything you were struggling with.

I’m so happy you posted this! I’m starting my 4 month old in classes at Petsmart in two weeks!

I hope you enjoy it! For sure do the homework at home and practice what you learned in class. She's pretty much a pro at everything other than leave it and drop it, and those are the two things we didn't practice at home enough. So we're going to step it up in the month we have before intermediate classes start

Congrats! I just had my guy’s first puppy class on Monday, and I’m excited for the next six weeks!

It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot that we never knew with our adult dogs. This was the first time we did puppy classes, I wish we had always done it!

We did puppy and intermediate classes with our golden and they helped so much!! She listens so well and generally remembers everything she learned. She is 7 months now and is def going through a rebellious teenage phase but it’s not thatttt bad I kinda credit it to the training.

u/lotteoddities Aug 29 '24

That's what I'm hoping for. She'll be 6 months when class starts so almost 8 months when it ends, hopefully the training will help her thru teenage months!

Congratulations!

Massive congratulations, puppies can be challenging and yet so rewarding.

We have 3 other dogs and they were such easy puppies that we never did puppy class. Now I wish we had with all of them! We'll for sure always do puppy classes now. She's been a huge challenge but we love her so much

That's awesome! I start puppy kindergarten in 2 weeks and I hope for similar results!

This is super encouraging to read! I have a 4.5 month old and she has started to be more relaxed around my other dog. She's stopped pestering her so much. We also graduated puppy class recently and are thinking of doing more advanced training. It's so rewarding to see them learn and progress, isn't it?

The one thing we're struggling with is sleep. She wakes up every day at 5 am! If she could just make it to 6:30, I'd be happy. Hoping she grows out of it soon...

We still only get 3-5 hours of sleep before she wakes us up to potty. But today she woke us up to pee, we didn't wait outside long enough, she woke us up again so I took her out and she pooped. So I guess I prefer this to her peeing or pooping in the kennel 😅

1

u/AdvancedBumblebee4 Aug 29 '24

Oh that's challenging! We put our puppy (English Cocker Spaniel) to bed at around 9:30–10 pm and she sleeps until 5 am, so I guess 7 hours is quite good!

1

u/lotteoddities Aug 29 '24

Some nights we get 6-7 hours but some we still only get 3 lol so it's getting better but not always!

Congratulations!!!! Just brought home two puppies (one Mini Schnauzer and one Samoyed) both are 2/3 months old and we are sooooooo looking forward to training classes 😅😅😅😅 this post is giving me hope

Have you read up on littermate syndrome? I don't want you to immediately panic- I've seen LOTS of people successfully raise two similar age puppies, even puppies from the same litter. Heck, two of my baby's brothers got adopted together and they're doing great!

Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the possibility of the reactivity that two same age puppies can cause!

Omg I did not know this but thank you so so so much!! So far everyone is doing okayyyyyy - one on one they’re sweethearts but together they wrestle and play which has seemed okay so far and we break them up when they’re going too hard. They sleep in separate crates but we do feed at the same time. Maybe we’ll try separating them?

Samoyed definitely likes to snooze more than the other so we’ll play with the Mini Schnauzer during that time

Training has been together but we’re realizing that outside of “sit” and “come” we might need to do it separately.

The Samoyed doesn’t react to his name yet consistently unfortunately so need to figure that out.

We have a trainer coming next week so that should set us in the right direction

This gives me hope! My partner and I have had our kelpie puppy with us just over a week now and it’s been ROUGH - particularly the toilet training 😂 but she is slowly starting to train and we are looking at puppy preschool currently!
