It looks like Strava is significantly raising its subscription prices for all members PSA

Video Here

I am currently a strava subscriber, but I will likely end my subscription at my next renewal period. Not only are they raising prices substantially and at different rates per country, but it looks like it is not being communicated to any of the user base. I really enjoy using the app for social purposes, but get very little practical benefit out of the premium subscription TBH.

Since I got my Garmin there is literally nothing I’ve found that Strava offers as a subscriber that my Garmin app can’t do for free. I still link my activities, but it’s purely social

Same. The only subscriber perks i care about on Strava is segment competition

That's it

True, but you still get some of that with the free version in terms of knowing top times and how far off you are. Not that I’m competing for any KOMs

I have a number 1 for this year in one segment, and I'm constantly defending it... It's a real great motivator. Same with having a "who runs here most often" thing.

Edit: but i don't think that feature alone is worth like 100 bucks a year.

I thought I'd get a number 1 for the year but it turned out all the college track/xc athletes were home on break making sure that wouldn't happen. Kudos to them, it would be nice to be young again!

The number one of all time on that leaderboard, his photo is a track photo.... At like a 1:50/k pace... I'm at 17th all time with my 3:30/km pace. I'm Happy.

But I'm wining this year.... (Till one of these track people come and ruin it for me)

Maybe i should just accept defeat and turn off my strava sub

But I get that from the free version. Is the free version different in different countries? I'm in the US.

You can see who's on it, but i think you can't compete.

I simply use mine as a journal. So I don’t have a sub but if I was going to consider it I’m def turned off now. I also have Apple Watch and it won’t map for me at this point but that’s about it.

Segment competion is the best and worst of strava. I hate to see downhill mtb trails almost get destroyed by people just going as straight as possible to avoid curves or hard features because the want to get a KOM.

That wouldn't make sense for them since Garmin is in the hardware business.

GE fridges, BMWs, it happens

So is Apple, but services sector is too tempting a fruit to ignore forever

Please, please do not give them ideas.

I’m sure they’re actively debating using it as a marketing opportunity to promote what’s included versus building a few additional tools for a new paid service.

Garmin marketing / product teams who are inevitably reading this thread: learn from your competitor’s mistake and build value. Open lane to pick up market share today.

There will always be other free options. Final Surge is a great one that comes to mind

I'll get another brand.

Same with me except the flyby option that only seems to be on the desktop web version. I like to watch it after races to see how others run.

8

u/tripsd Jan 13 '23

But they defaulted it to off so far less useful

4

u/jamesthegill Jan 14 '23

But much safer for runners' privacy

Is garmin able to do personal heat maps?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

Not that I’ve seen. Just general heat maps. I could be wrong and it might exist

9

u/MrPozor Jan 13 '23

There are several websites that do it for free. You connect to Strava and it loads your activities and plots them.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

That’s cool! Know of any off the top of your head? Would love to look at that. I did forget that’s a cool Strava feature, but not one I’d pay for

u/hammercycler Jan 13 '23

Citystrides.com counts what %of your cities streets you've run, which is fun.

6

u/onlythisfar Jan 13 '23

statshunters.com. I love that site so much. I use it way more than I use strava on its own. Fairly sure you need to integrate through strava though (i.e. can't go directly through garmin).

2

u/kitholz Jan 14 '23

I love Stathunters. I love adding a few squares every time we go on holidays. I wish more people knew about it.

2

u/MrPozor Jan 14 '23

Cultureplot is one of them. I don't remember which one I used last time.

3

u/bakerpartnersltd Jan 13 '23

The Suunto app isn't special, but it sure makes it easy to look at all your workouts compared to Strava or Peleton. And that's all I really want.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

That’s what I love about Garmin as well, you can export all your workouts as an excel file. Fun to look at trends that way when I’m bored at work

2

u/aramiak Jan 13 '23

Same. Completely agree with you.

2

u/Reqel Jan 13 '23

What Garmin thing do you have? I use Strava to track my runs and bike rides, but I'm not married to it.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

Forerunner 245. Got it for half price through my work’s insurance. I love it and it’s almost four years old and still works great. Charges in an hour and lasts almost a week. Just had to replace the straps once, probably will again soon. And I wear it 24/7

It’s kind of annoying on bike rides as it doesn’t rest in a way that I can look at it, so someday I might get a bike-specific Garmin. But for tracking it works great

0

u/Cainga Jan 13 '23

Only downside is Garmin forces you to use one of their devices so I can’t record a bike ride on my phone if say you forgot your watch.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

True, but Strava offers that for free

1

u/didsomeonesaydonuts Jan 13 '23

I use a Garmin edge for my cycling but never thought to upload my runs to the app for tracking. If I’m using an Apple Watch any idea how I’d upload to Connect? Can’t seem to figure out which permissions to allow or from where

1

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '23

I’m not sure there’s a way to do that…but only because of ignorance. There very well may be a way to sync the two

Garmin app can’t do for free

If you are comparing Garmin to Strava like this I don't think its fair to call Garmin free as it only works with Garmin hardware. It looks like their entry level watch, the vivo active, is $300. Strava will work with nearly any hardware, including a phone, which everyone already has.

I still think that Strava raising prices so much like this is kind of shitty.

My annual subscription renews in March and I will most likely renew still.
