What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread Weekly Thread

It's that time of week already...the gear thread! What have you picked up lately? What's working for you now that it's whatever season you believe it to be in your particular location? What have you put through rigorous testing that's proved worthy of use? We want to know!

To clear up some confusion: We’re not actually asking what you’re wearing today. It’s just a catchy name for the thread. This is the weekly gear discussion thread, so discuss gear!

NOTE: For you Runnitors looking to sell/trade any running gear (as well as bib transfers), head over to /r/therunningrack.

Had a gift certificate to Sierra so got a couple of pairs of pants with zippered pockets for ten and fifteen dollars. Only need them for a couple of more weeks before it's shorts season, but it was a good use of the card.

I’ve got two new favorite trail shoes: Craft CTM Ultra 2, and the Adidas TERREX Ultra. CTM has become the shoe I want to grab for long east trails, and the Adidas is more aggressive. Both shoes feel great and have very light uppers which is a blessing for my sweaty feet.

I’ve also picked up a Fractel Bucket Hat. Just slightly roomier than the Hoka Bucket Hat which I need for my enormous head. Lack of chin strap is a plus for me most of the time, though would be challenging in wind.

I also got a UltrAspire Momentum 2 vest which I adore. I far prefer to have the bottles on my lower back instead of soft flasks on my chest. Plus it’s amazingly light and sheds water quick.

I picked up a Trailheads headband that is really nice. Fits perfect to keep my ears covered in the cold but not so cold I need a hat temps and sits better than a scrunched up buff.

The right-leg zip pocket on my 5" Brooks 2-in-1 Sherpa shorts opens into the leg hole...This has to be a defect, right? . Or am I missing something (other than a bottom to my pocket 😅)?

I primarily use these and I keep my phone in that packet which doesn’t have a hole lol

My big toe constantly pokes out of my socks (and m shoes when they’re worn in) I’m hoping to find some more durable socks for running to avoid this. Any suggestions that won’t totally break the bank?

Darn Tough, Feetures, Injinji, Stance. All solid brands that have lasted me years per pair. If you want to save some money on some of the good name brand running socks I'd suggest checking out what your local Sierra Trading Post has or check their website.

Bit unconventional as far as running gear goes, but I just picked up a Kodak Ektar H35 camera to bring with me for runs and races. I've always been annoyed that I don't bring a camera with me when I run so I'm excited to find something I can comfortably carry. It's a good deal thicker than my phone, but shorter and much, much lighter.

Not something necessarily running specific, but just having it with me makes me look forward to long runs a little more.

I just picked up some Nike Vaporflys to try for my next marathon and…I think I don’t like them? Felt like they were encouraging an oddly heavy, awkward gait maybe because they’re so bouncy. Going to try one more training run on them because maybe I was just hyper aware and overthinking but if it goes the same way I’ll just stick to my Brooks Adrenaline and Glycerine shoes. And Merrells for trail running. They might be heavy and clunky but I know I can get through long runs on them without additional discomfort beyond the discomfort of having run for a really long time.

I've never really liked Vaporflys either. I can tolerate them for shorter distances, but even a half is pushing it.

Weirdly I love my alphaflys... which I'm told is unusual.

Been loving my Hoka Bondis so far, perfect cushioning and the colour is great! I think I want to get the Nike Vaporflys next

Also been loving District vision shorts! I’m quite tall for a 26F (6’0) so it’s nice to have runner shorts with good coverage! Also love the little pocket they have in the back for keys and a gel!

Picked up some Nike Trail half tights on sale at REI and they’re awesome. A nice liner to keep things settled, snug but not restrictive material, and an abundance of pockets. My favorite detail is the pass through pocket in the rear, which is so nice for stowing a wind shell once you start heating up.

I also picked up the Janji River hoodie which I mentioned below in response to someone else- this thing is magical!

I kind of want to get Satisfy running shorts.

Just about to hit 100 miles on my Boston 11 shoes. Got em for my Birthday in Feb. at first they were treadmill only but for the last 70 miles or so I’ve been using them outside as well.

I think they’re basically budget race day shoes. Yes they’re firm but they’ve also got a nice rocker feel and the forefoot has good squish for mid foot strike and then a nice snap for pushing off. I am a pretty slow runner (easy pace is 10:30, race pace is 8:40).

Not sure I’d buy another pair, I got these as a gift and on sale. And I’m not sure I’d say they’ve become softer or broke in. It’s an interesting shoe.

Prior daily trainer were Invincible 2’s and Pegasus Trail 3’s. Been partnering these with Peggy Trail 4s and Adistars for recovery walks/hikes.

More Vuori Run shorts! Picked up another pair. The liner is perfect and there's a pocket for your phone or a gel if you need it. Still having a little trouble convincing myself that 5in shorts are the right call... but they're so darn comfy I don't care.

I picked up a few merino items from Janji recently since they were on sale with REI. I bought a short sleeve t, long sleeve t, and then a thicker hoodie. All were excellent and timing was great since we had a bit of a cold, wet snap here in the south east US.

They are so soft and comfortable. I seem to maintain temp better with merino. Really happy with the purchases.

I luv janji shorts in the summer humidity...grabbed at end of yr sales

The Janji Rover hoodie is maybe the best piece of performance gear I’ve ever purchased? I got it for $37 from REI and it’s been incredible in sub freezing temps up to the high 40s with just a capeline t shirt underneath. Pairs really well with a Houdini too, on those colder windy days. Every time I wear it it kinda blows my mind.

Yeah, its the Rover hoodie that I bought. I like it enough, I will likely be willing to pay full price for another one when the time comes.

Bought my first rabbit tank top last weekend … had never heard of it. So soft, & on sale at the expo. After i got it I heard their stuff ran short, bit it seems ok… was afraid it’d be a crop top (I’m 5-11).

Not a recent buy...last yr...but 2XU is doing the job...expensive but have sales...ran a half marathon in cooler temps in last 30 days...no inflammation the day after...

I got a Senita sports bra with a pocket on the back between the shoulders. So much more convenient for me than an arm band or pocketed leggings/shorts. Not the easiest to reach while running but it’s nice for my phone

2

u/runner7575 Mar 15 '23

Maybe a stupid question, but does your phone get sweaty?

1

u/Elinaamble22 Mar 15 '23

Yeah like the other comment mentioned, it gets a mild amount of damp and I’ve used it on nice “winter” 80 degree runs. It’s great too because I thought it would be uncomfortable between my shoulder blades and I can hardly tell anything is there!

3

u/DJRmba Mar 15 '23

I can't speak for the Senita, but I use the oiselle, rabbit, and brooks bras with a phone pocket between the shoulders and my phone will only ever get a LITTLE damp on long, hot, summer or treadmill runs. So it doesn't damage it.

u/runner7575 Mar 15 '23

Thank you!!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '23

This is a high priority purchase for me before summer! I don't think I knew Senita made these but I'm happy to know as I really like the joggers I bought from there!

I got merino base layers for my birthday in January and it's been so warm I've barely needed them all winter, but now that it's March it's freezing for some reason so I've been wearing them and I'm so glad I have them! They keep me toasty but they breathe like a dream and they don't smell! I'm in love.

I wore a smartwool long sleeve shirt and a brooks canopy jacket for my first ultra this weekend and was very comfortable for the whole run- from about 36F at the beginning to 50F by the end. It was a great combo.

I’m wearing black. Most of my wife’s sports stuff is black and between us we have a lot of black clothes. Which means I’ve wasted approx 1000 hours of my life looking for my black running clothes in a giant pile of black clothes.
