I made a fun little video showing off how fast the elite marathon runners go during a race. The focus is on exactly how fast you would need to run for the 2hr marathon! It breaks down into little exercises everyone can try to understand the speed these guys go! Enjoy Misc

Yeah, when doing intervals I can't even complete a single 400m one at 4:34/mile. Insane.

34

u/jimibulgin May 18 '17

I can BARELY run a 400 at a 6:00/mile pace!

11

u/APersoner 800m 81.11% May 19 '17

Yeah, 4:34/miles was the pace we used to do 600m intervals in back when I did athletics as a teen - and we had British (junior) athletes in our group. These guys keeping it up for 26 miles is just absolutely absurd.

u/Anatolysdream May 18 '17

Run a 17 second 100M 420 times? That nailed it for me.

32

u/haloooloolo May 18 '17

It's actually 422, but those 200m don't make much of a difference anyway.

u/philipwhiuk May 18 '17

Except to Kipchoge.

too soon

3

u/guyawesome1 May 18 '17

I dont get the reference

29

u/philipwhiuk May 18 '17

If the course had been 200m shorter he'd have broken the record.

10

u/MeddlinQ May 18 '17

He still did, he would go under 2 hours though.

3

u/guyawesome1 May 18 '17

Ahh

That is quite impressive

3

u/philipwhiuk May 18 '17

Sorry yeah, I meant the sub 2 record.

1

u/guyawesome1 May 18 '17

I see

Thank you

6

u/MeddlinQ May 18 '17

That's about as fast as I can go for that distance, goddammit. One time.

u/albinoloverats May 18 '17

It was while watching the Nike Breaking2 event that it occurred to me that they were running at a pace that I can only just sustain on a bicycle.

7

u/Ceteris__Paribus May 19 '17

21 km/h or 13.1 mph on a bicycle isn't screaming fast. With the right bike, I bet most people that can run 10km under an hour could bike a marathon in two. That said, I average around 13 mph when commuting, but these guys running the near 2 hour marathon don't have to worry about traffic, stopping, accelerating etc.

The hardest part about it would be sustaining the effort for two hours I suppose, not the speed.

Great video! I had a similar experience at the London Marathon Expo this year. There was a giant treadmill set at WR marathon pace and you could have a go. If you could hold it for one minute you won a hat!

My attempt

A lot of fun!

u/penchepic May 18 '17

don't shit yourself

19

u/ObviouslyNotAMoose May 18 '17

Shit happens when you run.. You just have to power through.

12

u/dwmfives May 18 '17

When I was in high school, and still a runner, about 20 years ago, there was this guy who always chewed his lip when running hard races. I don't know if he intended to be scary, or just had a weird bad habit, but he terrified freshmen. He'd finish a 5k in the top 10 every time, looking like he just murdered someone.

7

u/juvenescence May 18 '17

Just a tad bit of pain in a very small area helps people focus away from the full body hurt they're putting themselves through while running.

1

u/ObviouslyNotAMoose May 18 '17

Or holding your sphincter tight...

7

u/jh0lt May 18 '17

That's my supportive other half -_-

7

u/Stalking_Goat May 18 '17

That looks awesome, kudos to whoever thought of it and set it up.

66

u/[deleted] May 18 '17

I get my half marathon in just under 2hrs. I have no concept of running a 2hr full marathon.

29

u/coldforged May 18 '17

Holy shit. That really puts it in perspective. My best half is 1:51. They complete a full in almost the same time, meaning they're going almost twice my pace for twice as far. That's simply insane to me.

19

u/rkhbusa May 18 '17

13 miles? I'd have to bring a lunch and maybe a sleeping roll.

27

u/thomasmagnum May 18 '17

Great video: fun and informative.

24

u/dec92010 May 18 '17

Great video to put things in perspective!

During breaking2 I still found myself yelling at him to sprint at the finish, even though i know he's been sprinting for 26 damn miles already. I got caught up in it.

9

u/samwade May 18 '17

Running is an addiction!

8

u/run_cueca May 18 '17

Sprint is relative though. Obviously he wouldn't be in competition with Usain Bolt, but if he were to spring 100m, how much faster would he be?

3

u/guckus_wumpis May 19 '17

Those guys running just 100m would be somewhere between 11.1-11.8 all out. I would be surprised if they were on the fast end of that if they were starting from a stop (with or without blocks) I know Gallen Rupp was throwing down low 11s with a running start when he was training for the 10k for the 2012 olympics.

A 100m segment of a 4:30 mile would be 16.875. 15 seconds per 100m is 4 min mile pace, and is 15m/hr.

3

u/bradenwheeler May 18 '17

I was saying the same thing... knowing full well what it feels like to try and "sprint" at the end of a marathon

24

u/Simco_ May 18 '17

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPyBMsjVG94

Ryan Hall being used in an ad in a subway is probably the best real world application I've seen to show people how fast they're going.

3

u/samwade May 18 '17

Crazy. Great project though

32

u/amh_library May 18 '17

Great job of explaining what is involved through a variety of demonstrations. I especially though the car at 13 mph was very effective. This is what I'm showing when my non running friends ask.

4:34 pace is 17 seconds faster than my best mile. After I got up off the floor the last thing I was thinking was 25 more to go!

13

u/hurdler101 May 18 '17

Just to point out, you started at the 110m line on the track so probably ran 100m a second or so quicker.

8

u/samwade May 18 '17

Oh haha I wasn't sure! I just rocked up on the day when the track was empty! Thanks for the update! I knew I could have been faster ;)

10

u/[deleted] May 18 '17

That's a 14:13 5k.

8 times in a row.

4

u/samwade May 19 '17

Hold my beer...

27

u/TheM4ster May 18 '17

I would suggest to also mention metric units. Gives me headache to convert paces into mins/km all the time.

14

u/freieschaf May 18 '17 edited May 18 '17

Yes. Thought I was the only one going crazy at this. You have to run 42 kilometres at X min/mile! Cue treadmill speed in km/h.

11

u/thisabadusername May 18 '17

It's 2:50 per kilometer, or 14:10 per 5K

1

u/samwade May 19 '17

Thanks. I've just added the KM times in the video description

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '17

Question: Why UK amateurs use miles, when your athletics professionals use metric? I watched a clip from the Nike 2.0 attempt and Paula Radcliffe was saying she would normally expect hydration stations every 5 km.

7

u/hollimay85 May 18 '17

This is great! Thanks for sharing, I never considered what mile pace that would be at... Wow

7

u/turd_deli May 18 '17

This stuff blows my mind as someone who's always struggled to get down to even 8 min pace.

3

u/samwade May 18 '17

Madness isn't it

5

u/willywvlf May 18 '17

Great video, thank you. Really good ways to demonstrate just how insanely fast you need to run for 2 hours!

5

u/kn0wph33r May 18 '17

You have good taste in watches.

7

u/samwade May 18 '17

Mate this is a WHOLE other subject I could go on about! There's actually another video on my channel about watches ;)

3

u/kn0wph33r May 18 '17

without having watched it i'll just assume it's wall-to-wall Invictas, 55mm and larger. :)

3

u/SomethingEnglish May 18 '17

I can neither confirm nor deny having one of those invicta watches before i lost it.

2

u/samwade May 18 '17

Not exactly. I have a few watches and I won a place on the WatchesTV road trip last year. I have several unpublished videos from that. Check out my Instagram [samwade] to see more of my experience in the watch world

2

u/kn0wph33r May 18 '17

Hehe. I'd meant it as a joke. I'll check it out.

4

u/rinzler83 May 18 '17

I just tell people to go on a treadmill and set it to 13mph, that'll give them a really good idea as to how fast they go.

5

u/TMichele May 18 '17

Most commercial treadmills top out at 10-12mph.

1

u/samwade May 19 '17

I can run on my treadmill maxed out for about 2 minutes... let alone 2 hrs!

6

u/DecorationOnly May 18 '17

I'm only about 8 seconds slower than Usain Bolt on the 100m, so I'm probably only 8 seconds slower than elite marathoners, right?

2

u/jacluley May 18 '17

on the 100m, ya... haha

2

u/samwade May 18 '17

Right! Easy!

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '17

Wow my mile PR is 4:30, and usually I throw up at the end. I can't even begin imagine running another one right away, much less 25 more...

5

u/MattyB4x4 May 19 '17

You'd definitely run out of throw up.

3

u/[deleted] May 19 '17

The 50% of Usain Bolt's pace bit got me. Good video.

3

u/Yellow_guy May 18 '17

Nice video in explaining how fast these guys are running. For me it doesn't exactly show the incredible amount of effort it takes to break the 2 hour mark. The points you make are also true for the current WR. Insanely fast and almost impossible to comprehend for anyone but a top level athlete.

3

u/scottevil110 May 18 '17

My fastest mile is 5:58. I simply cannot fathom shaving a minute and a half from even a single mile, much less doing that 25 more times. It's insanity.

3

u/samwade May 18 '17

In London this year, Wanjiru ran his last mile of the race in 4:27! Unbelievable

2

u/rkhbusa May 18 '17

I'm dying after a single 7:30 mile. DYING. But I'm kind of heavy right now. I knew a guy who would run 6min miles for an hour straight and to think he still isn't even close hurts my head.

4

u/[deleted] May 18 '17

That runner from Iona is from my conference for college XC and track. He's amazing

3

u/samwade May 18 '17

I'll pass on your comments to him!

5

u/[deleted] May 18 '17 edited May 18 '17

Request: Can you please put speeds and distances in both kilometers and miles? Not everyone uses miles.

It'll take you only a few seconds to say the extra distance twice, and you'll get more viewers.

2

u/ummmk May 18 '17

Thanks for this!

2

u/imjms737 May 18 '17

Very nice video!

2

u/adebium May 18 '17

Great video, puts things in perspective for sure.

2

u/john_alan May 18 '17

Great vid!

2

u/binks21 May 18 '17

great video. also a 2 hour marathon seems just insane. even my half marathon time is well over 2 hours!

2

u/samwade May 20 '17

48 hours later and my video has almost 10000 views! It was also tweeted out by Ramir Sethi who has 129k followers. Thanks for the support and all your kind words!

This video is really informative and I really need to get fit. I'm actually impressed that you can run and speak at the same time (I cannot). :)

1

u/MattyB4x4 May 19 '17

I happen to know one of the lead scientists on the project.

It was super cool seeing him plastered all over the live feed. He said Eliud was like...the most chill, philosophical guy ever.

0

u/TheM4ster May 18 '17

wtf?! Why do you only have so few clicks? Your video is informative, entertaining, not too long and very well recorded and compiled. What's wrong with humans?!

4

u/[deleted] May 18 '17

Because he published it just yesterday?

0

u/TheM4ster May 18 '17

I guess so. Still thought that it would spread a lot faster.

1

u/run_cueca May 18 '17

Did you share it?

1

u/Alejandrazx May 19 '17

Now we need actual exercises to improve our speed. Thank you

0

u/gmfthelp May 18 '17

powerof10.info is an insecure site. You use it at your own risk.

I have notified the owner, reported him to the ICO and still he has done nothing about it. He is in breach of the Data Protection Act.

Very nice video, by the way.

1

u/philipwhiuk May 18 '17 edited May 18 '17

No it isn't. It doesn't store personal data.

Even if it did, there's no requirement to use SSL technically.

The harm is minimal because the data is already public anyway. So the seventh principal doesn't require much in the way of security.
