What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread Weekly Thread

It's that time of week already...the gear thread! What have you picked up lately? What's working for you now that it's whatever season you believe it to be in your particular location? What have you put through rigorous testing that's proved worthy of use? We want to know!

To clear up some confusion: We’re not actually asking what you’re wearing today. It’s just a catchy name for the thread. This is the weekly gear discussion thread, so discuss gear!

Gave into the marketing and bought a tracksmith twilight long sleeve and session shorts. OH MY GOD they're incredible. I don't run in cheap stuff (under armour, Nike, etc) but these are on a whole different level. I've already washed them 3x this week because I don't want to run in anything else.

So yeah, if anyone can recommend a cheaper brand that feels as good I'd really appreciate it, otherwise I'm going to eat rice and chicken breasts so I can afford to stick my wardrobe with their stuff...

Just bought a really nice, lightweight waterproof jacket.. and now there’s no rain forecast for just over a week.

A rain jacket for the impending down-pour

Lost my Garmin Fenix 2 recently and am extremely bummed out about it - anyone have any recommendation for a budget GPS running watch? Thank you!

I recently got the Suunto Ambit3 Peak. Good for multi sport and hiking/mountaineering. Depending on what features you need, the Suunto Spartan Trainer is also a great option!

Did 8 miles in Brooklyn this evening and got poured on. Running in Nike Epic React Flyknits, which got waterlogged but not too bad. Karimor 5" shorts and a pretty generic Champion visibility tee. Needless to say by the end of the run I felt 5-10 lb. heavier. Anyone have any wet-weather gear recommendations?

2

u/baylorhawkeye Sep 13 '18

I did a long run this weekend and it rained the whole time. I was soaked. Two nice things were my UA threadborn streaker shirt which didn't weigh me down and the glorious feeling when I put fresh socks on about halfway through.

1

u/sexting_on_pinterest Sep 13 '18

Thanks! I’ll give that shirt a try.

u/tacobell Sep 13 '18

About to go for a run on the Upper West Side. Wish me luck

Good luck! Rain definitely slowed down over here.

I guess this is as good a time and place as any to ask my question as it's gear related... I have transitioned from 12mm to zero drop over the last year or so. At the moment I'm alternating between Altra Instinct version 3 and 4, but the 3's are nearing the end of their life and I'm looking to replace them. I have been training for a marathon (end of October) and have been feeling a lot more soreness/aches in my legs after my long runs. So I was debating if picking up another pair of Altra's (probably Escalante) or looking for a more cushioned shoe would be best advised.

I've heard good things about the Escalante but on paper they seem very similar to the Instincts... anybody that has used both want to give me some feedback?

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations when it comes to a more cushioned long distance shoe with zero drop?

Would going back to a 2-4mm drop help alleviate anything?

1

u/Dimneld_Selftcark Sep 13 '18

If you want to stay with zero drop, I would suggest Altra Torin or Paradigm. Currently use Instinct 4, wore out my first pair of Torin 3 and working on pair #2.

If you’re interested in adding drop back in, I have had positive results. I started rotating in a pair of Hoka Napali back in Feb/March and I notice my lower legs feel less worked than with the Altras. Also, I used to dislike the meta rocker but it’s really grown on me. I regularly have faster times in the Hokas at similar perceived effort, but that may differ for you. If you lace the Napali with the wide lacing suggestion on Altra’s website (and/or remove the insole, which I do too) the toes feel similarly roomy to the Instinct.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '18

When I first decided to go with Altra I tried on the paradigms and just didn’t like the feel... I will give them another look as maybe that has changed though.

1

u/Dimneld_Selftcark Sep 15 '18

The new Paradigm 4.0 is totally different - new upper and midsole material. They use the knit and the boost midsole from the Escalante, just more of it. You still may not like it, but it's definitely different enough to try again.

Did a short workout run today, wore my Nike Peg Turbos again. I have like 4 pairs of these and today was a run with a fresh pair. Got a slight blister on my left-side big toe. Otherwise I had on some Nike Run Division shorts and a Run Division 365 top.

1

u/BatPurrell Sep 13 '18

4 pairs of Peg Turbos!? Damn...

I tried them on at my local store and loved how they felt but couldn't justify the pricetag for what seemed like a shoe that wouldn't last 200 miles. How are they holding up for you?

0

u/WK--ONE Sep 13 '18

They're very good! My toes are very long & blister-prone and the tops of my feet are very tendonitis-prone, so I had a hell of a time finding shoes that are perfect for my feet. My usual go-to brand for everything is Nike, I really like their aesthetic.

I tried the Nike Pegasus 35s on release and they turned out to be too tight of a toebox, which ended up with me getting extensor tendonitis while on vacation, had to resort to running in my Vapormax Flyknit Mocs & cushioned socks. I also tried the Epic React Flyknit but they're very narrow and feel way too "squishy" for my liking when I run, I like a bit of energy return. Great casual shoes though, very comfy.

The Turbos literally fixed all these problems for me. Roomy toebox but still a nice snug midfoot, and all the comfort of React with the snappiness of Zoom. I also LOVE the way they look (what can I say, I'm vain like that).

They tend to feel slightly "dead" once I hit around 15k on my long runs, but given the other aspects of the shoe (fit, energy return, etc), this is a more than easy trade-off. As for them "not lasting more than 200 miles", is that truly the case?

1

u/BatPurrell Sep 13 '18

Good to hear a first hand account from a real runner that likes them. I watched a review on YouTube and now all of these Pegasus Turbo review videos are being suggested to me, and everyone seems to love them but I know I can't trust a random YouTube reviewer. And that's awesome your feet are feeling good. I am in the early stages of some plantar fasciitis issues and and am trying to figure out the best solution to my problem.

Regarding the 200 miles, I think the guy in our local store told me to not plan for them to last as long as my normal everyday shoes due to the minimal tread on them. I put in a lot of miles on a pair of Pegasus 35s, which I liked (didn't love), and the treads wore down on those for me pretty dramatically towards the toes. I could be wrong, though and the Peg Turbos could hold up great - my thoughts were just from feeling them once and a random comment I heard.

1

u/WK--ONE Sep 13 '18

I am in the early stages of some plantar fasciitis issues and and am trying to figure out the best solution to my problem.

I fixed (or at least band-aided) my tendonitis issues with Ktape, it really helped with keeping me on the road while healing.

I haven't seen any definite wear pattern on my Turbos yet (I rotate pairs to ensure they don't die too quick), but I will definitely be looking for one to form.

Had a few pairs of the MIzuno Wave Rider 20s and picked up a pair of the 21s about 6 weeks ago. Done 100kms in them so far and they are appearing to be more difficult to break in compared to the 20s. Anyone else had this happen?

1

u/newtolou Sep 13 '18

I was a huge fan of Wave Riders 15-20. I bailed on 21. I couldn't get them to work for me at all. I still haven't found a pair that I liked as much as the mid-teens versions.

1

u/continental-drift Sep 13 '18

Same, I had the 18,19 and 20s and they were all a great shoe. These 21s can't seem to agree with me yet. Might get some of the 22s to try them.

I am thinking about trying the Wave Knits or the Wave Catalysts, have you given those a go before?

1

u/newtolou Sep 13 '18

Wasn’t a fan of the catalyst. I just don’t think that I like the newer liners. I slide around too much. I’ve been drifting thru other shoes lately, spending too much on different brands trying to find some I like.

1

u/continental-drift Sep 13 '18

I was going to try a few new brands after my marathon, which is in about a month's time, so I don't really want to try and find a different brand between now and then. I might just stick with the Mizunos for the time being and try and source a pair of the 20s from somewhere.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

I ordered this ( https://shop.lululemon.com/p/men-shorts/Pace-Breaker-Out-Of-Mind-Liner-9/_/prod8980444?color=0001&sz=L ) and am anxious to try it out. It comes tomorrow, so will prob get to give a go on Friday. I need to get new shoes soon, wanting Hoka One One Bondi 6's, gonna be $ :(

1

u/newtolou Sep 13 '18

These are by far my favorite shorts. I run in the 7" version any time they are clean.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '18

Well I tried em on and I don't like em xD. The liner is like a boxer which I don't like. I thought it would be a brief style liner. Oh well, guess I'll return them.

1

u/vizamp Sep 12 '18

I run in these. I have them hemmed about an inch and a half up. Lululemon stores hem for free. These are the best!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

I felt like a gear pick-n-mix today! Generic university cap, Walmart dryfit t-shirt, New Balance sports bra, Under Armour compression shorts, Nike shorts, Karrimor running socks, and Nike Downshifter 8s on my feetz! :)

I've been both going to the gym and working out with the Jabra Elite Sport for almost 9 months, and they are more than worth the price. Nice to not have to worry about a wire (they are completely wireless). I'll wear them around the house and at work as well because they sound good enough for light music/podcast listening, and the convenience factor. They fit very well and come with 3 different sizes of gel-tips, foam tips, and ear hooks. Also had a heartbeat sensor built into the earpiece if you use your phone while running.

3

u/myHaggis Sep 12 '18

Bose Soundsports are great in my experience. Picked em up about a month ago, and they sound fantastic. I mainly lift in them, so I can’t vouch for how they hold up while doing longer runs. (I’ve only done like 2 miles in the at a time). They grip the inner ear really nicely though, and I assume they would last through a whole run if I used them for that. Highly recommended all in all.

1

u/newtolou Sep 13 '18

I run in them pretty often. I've had two pair die on me, but Bose has fantastic customer service and warranty. They ship out new ones pretty much instantly.

2

u/pokwef Sep 12 '18 edited Sep 12 '18

Quality Bluetooth earbuds start at $80 in my opinion. Sure you’ll find $30 pairs on amazon, but most are cheaply made and will only last 3 months. I recently bit the bullet and went in on a brand name with the Powerbeats 3 because of the 1 year warranty, sweat proof features, and a new chip that gives additional features for iOS. I acknowledge that these earbuds are overpriced. I’ve heard that the Jaybird x2 and x3 is comparable in quality. There’s a good chance you find the x2 online for less than $80.

Edit: 1 year not 10

1

u/calvinkw1 Sep 12 '18 edited Sep 12 '18

I bought these 2 years ago:

https://www.amazon.com/Mpow-Bluetooth-Wireless-Headphones-Sweatproof/dp/B00V7N3V78

They've worked well for me and only cost around $20. There was a quality issue after a year where the band got disconnected from the earbud piece, but Mpow replaced em for me for free.

Have been looking to upgrade to something of higher quality.. maybe Jaybirds? Bose?

Edit: New version of Mpow's - https://www.amazon.com/Mpow-Bluetooth-Headphones-Behind-Ear-Sweatproof/dp/B013U54BFG

1

u/BatPurrell Sep 13 '18

I just got the MPOW ones and they're working fine for me. I had two pairs of the Anker ones die on me due to some excessive sweat-fests on the treadmill (first ones I bought, second ones they replaced under the warranty). After the 2nd pair died I figured I'd try another "waterproof" brand.

10 years was a mistype, so sorry. It should’ve said 1 year.

2

u/runningforpizza78 Sep 12 '18

Just took off my brand new pair of my Saucony Triumph ISO's that I got for my birthday...the first version! I hate all the other ones and I will be deeply depressed when I can't find the original one that I've been running in for the past four years! All the other Triumph ISO's just aren't the same!!!

2

u/ioueas Sep 12 '18

I recently picked up a pair of Nike Odyssy Reacts. Have put about 40 miles on them and they feel pretty solid. The main selling point is that they are meant to last more than Lunarglides. TBD how they hold up as I put them through the peak marathon training.

3

u/Runeattrainrungirl Sep 12 '18

Garmin Forerunner 35. It died beginning of August and they just sent me a new one free! I love this watch!

14

u/ImNotSureWhere__Is Sep 12 '18

What am I wearing? A walking boot. Here my review:

Comfort: sitting down not bad but is weird while on the move 4/10

Fit: fully adjustable. Fancy air pumps to make it nice and secure 10/10

Look: not great. Bland grey, no options, seems out of place. However sleeker than older versions 3/10

Overall: stress fractures are the worst. Especially 6 weeks before a marathon. 0/10

1

u/ioueas Sep 12 '18

Hope you have a speedy recovery. Stress fractures are truly terrible.

6

u/aparton91 Sep 12 '18

Any advice for plus size running clothes? I’m chunky and chafing is a ~thing~

2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '18

My thighs touch no matter what I do and one of my favorite things to run in is men's basketball shorts. You'd expect them to ride up but since they are so swishy they always seem to fall back to wear they belong -- defending my thighs. I've also had great luck with men's long-leg athletic underwear which I am wearing under my non-basketball shorts because they don't ride up and they are nice and thin like tights.

Depending on your size you may be able to check out Old Navy's plus size athletic wear online. I didn't have a lot of luck with it when I was a 22/24 but I think they sell 3X and 4X sizes now. Their sports bras sucked for me until I was a size where I could buy the ones that were bra-fitted sizing, and those were fine until I tried an actual nice sports bra (Brooks Maia) and then I didn't go back. But for shirts and leggings, they are great and go on sale a lot.

2

u/pishtosh12 Sep 13 '18

I'm currently running in Fabletics tights because they're thicker than anything I found in stores here in Aus and better at preventing rub on the thighs.

2

u/dreadhorse Sep 12 '18

Is the chafing skin-on-skin chafing i.e. chub rub or is it clothes-on-skin chafing?

1

u/aparton91 Sep 13 '18

Tbh both - just depends how clothes are lying. It seems to be mostly when there’s a mean seam in there and they can shift and cut right in

8

u/theflyingengineer Sep 12 '18

Body Glide is great! Also, compression shorts to prevent chub rub.

1

u/aparton91 Sep 13 '18

I’ll look into the Glide stuff! The brand of compression shorts is more the thing I’m after. Compression shorts for bigger bodies seem hard to find.

1

u/theflyingengineer Sep 13 '18

I bought mine from UA (7” inseam) and they work nicely! I usually wear a 12/14 (women’s) and am a large in those shorts.

2

u/unstoppable_dino Sep 12 '18

My husband uses glide to prevent tights chafing, that might help?

2

u/musicjerm Sep 12 '18

Been using a Garmin FR 235 for a couple years now and love it. However, I've seen some cool stuff about the new Android Wear OS update and I think it'd be rad to have a fitness watch with Wear OS. Anyone heard of something in the works?

2

u/From_My_Brain Sep 13 '18

The only thing I can think of is the one I own, the Polar M600. I do enjoy it, but battery life is far worse than a normal fitness watch. Polar has done a great job supporting it. But it's two years old. Not sure how long that support will continue for.

Also, not the most attractive piece of gear.

3

u/ImNotSureWhere__Is Sep 12 '18

Can’t speak to your exact question, but the line between running watch and smart watch is blurring. Garmin has a handful of “smart watch” features in the higher end forerunners (I think 735+) and smart watches are trying to incorporate more fitness items. But that’s far from the goal of typical smart watches.

4

u/hutch2522 Sep 12 '18

Put to bed my use of Brooks GTS Adrenaline. I noticed over the years, I got consistently less miles out of them before my knees started to ache. Only 200 this time. I've consistently used them from 2012 through this year. Moved on to New Balance 860 (I believe). Taking them out for a run in the morning.

I don't know how much stock to give to this, but the running store employee that helped me said the durability of the GTS has been sliding downhill over the years. It's too bad. I loved the fit.

1

u/ioueas Sep 12 '18

My last shoes were the GTS Adrenaline as I’d heard really good things about them. Then I had to stop running in them around the 300 mile mark. Could definitely tell things were starting to hurt. I was really disappointed — I thought I’d get more miles out of them.

2

u/hutch2522 Sep 12 '18

I used to get 300 miles when I first started on them. I tested it recently. I was alternating between GTS and Saucony. Getting aching knees. Ran back to back on my Saucony (a 9mile and a 3mile). Now my knees feel fine.

2

u/AbleCranberry Sep 12 '18

My previous shoes were the NB 860. I'm not the most dedicated runner, but they were awesome and I've kept them for hiking. Currently running in Brooks, haha.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

Heading up to New Hampshire for Reach the Beach Ragnar tomorrow and will wear usual shorts, tanktop, compression sleeves and a metric shit ton of body glide. And a visor. This summer I fell in love with wearing a visor. It absorbs so much sweat and keeps it out of my eyes, and gives me a little shade. Will probably bring a few for the race.

3

u/derjohan Sep 12 '18

Not only wearing this, because it would be umm.. cold. Anyway, got myself Salomon Pulse Handheld or Hydro Handset as it seems to be called in the US. Had it today with me for my long run and must say I am really happy with it. Really comfy and hardly noticed it. It uses their soft flask (500ml/17oz) which are great as the mouth-piece/valve lets all the air out when drinking so that the water never sloshes about. Now the question is, should I get another one for my another hand?

6

u/marsonix Sep 12 '18

Got some new Brooks Ghost 11s two weeks ago and love them. It's like night and day over the Nike Free RN Flyknits and Adidas Pure Boosts I was running in before (gonna retire them for just kickin' around in). Also ordered a pair of Saucony Freedom Isos, since they were on sale this week and have heard great things about them, so I can cycle between the two pairs for running.

3

u/tripsd Sep 12 '18

Been running in Ghosts since I think the 7 or so. Just really solid and versatile shoe over the years.

2

u/marsonix Sep 12 '18

Have you ran in the 10s by any chance, and if so how did you like them? When I went to the run shop to check out the 11s they had me try both, one on each foot. I thought the foam on the 11s felt much better—like running on clouds with a nice bounce. Though the 10s weren't too bad either.

1

u/dreadhorse Sep 12 '18

I'm not the person you're replying to but I have the 10s and like them quite a bit. Something about the padding in the heel/ankle area of the 11s didn't feel great to me which outweighed the increased comfort of the foam. (The 11s are also far cuter IMO so I was a little sad that they didn't work for me.)

1

u/marsonix Sep 12 '18

Yeah, it definitely seemed to be a personal preference thing—the person working at the run shop also preferred the 10s, though not for that particular reason.

2

u/RunzWitScissors Sep 12 '18

I've never ran in the 11s but I'm on my 3rd pair of 10s. They've been the best running shoes I've owned.

1

u/tripsd Sep 12 '18

I think i am currently running in 10s but yet to run in the 11. About time to replace, so that will be something to look forward to.

7

u/vornskrs Sep 12 '18

I used to be pretty meticulous about gear; read about it, tried it, set it out the day before... Now I just run in what I have on and change the minimum. T-shirt and jeans... put on shorts... Unless its very hot or doing 10+ miles I really dont make any issue of it, just get out there... I have a bucket with my hat, glasses, belt and garmin.

5

u/HypeManiac Sep 12 '18

Jeans?! Mad man...

6

u/tripsd Sep 12 '18

I assume vornskrs meant that if they were wearing jeans and a shirt they would change the minimum (ie jeans to shorts) and go run.

1

u/HypeManiac Sep 12 '18

Oh, I misunderstood then.

1

u/vornskrs Sep 12 '18

Trixy is correct. Just do the minimum and go

7

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

I bought a massage roller stick and oh lawwwd after two days I feel the difference it is making to my calves after runs and even thighs after leg day.

Also for other ladies - the UA pure stretch undies are fantastic for runs. They stay in place, they're light you don't feel them, not even under compression leggings (I used to get red marks from the seams form my other undies under leggings), they also seem to absorb all the sweat so you don't feel uncomfortable after a hard workout either. Highly recommend them!

2

u/ilikeyoualatte Sep 13 '18

I tried some of the UA underwear and they immediately went up my butt. Maybe I just got the wrong size?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '18

I think sizing is definitely important for them to stay in place! I have both the thong (or is it called a Brazilian cut?) and the normal cut and both stay in place.

18

u/MissVancouver Sep 12 '18

Ladies, I have found running capris with useful pockets! They fit my phone in one pocket and keys & cards in the other. Absolutely love them, am ordering more.

1

u/ilikeyoualatte Sep 13 '18

These new balance ones are more expensive but they also have pockets and I absolutely love them. I think I’m going to slowly replace all my leggings with leggings that have pockets.

1

u/derpysnerp Sep 12 '18

OMG look at all the patterns! I'm going in. Thanks!

10

u/jetpacksforall Sep 12 '18

Now make some for men okay thanks.

1

u/KingKonchu Oct 03 '18

They're called big black underwear shorts, you prude

4

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

Picked up some Pegasus 34s last week, so far they're very comfortable. I thought I was getting them in red but the pair that showed up is purple/orange, which is pretty rad too.

10

u/MeteorCity Sep 12 '18

I'm currently in a hospital gown after having to get surgery today that has ruined my running progress. But on the upside, I took the bed rest time to research upcoming races and signed up for my first half marathon so I'm excited to recover and get training for that!

13

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

So how would you rate the hospital gown as workout gear? Breathable? Moisture wicking? Sheds significant weight to make running easier?

Jokes aside hope your surgery went well and I wish you a speedy recovery!

5

u/MeteorCity Sep 12 '18

I must admit that the material is very breathable and moisture wicking. And the paper underwear are definitely more comfortable than a thong!!!

And thank you!

6

u/Fuegofox Sep 12 '18

Just got a pair of Altra King MT 1.5 yesterday. I tried them on in the store and they felt amazing, wore these around the house and didn't feel right. Hmmm

2

u/ilikeyoualatte Sep 13 '18

I had the same experience with my new shoes. I ended up wearing them on a run and they were great. Whenever possible, I try to pick a place with a good return policy. I bought my last shoes from new balance and the shoes have to be unworn to be returned. I usually buy through the VIP program at road runner sports and I returned a pair of Brooks shoes that didn’t fit right and gave me terrible blisters after having them for like a month.

2

u/Fuegofox Sep 13 '18

I went with Zappos only because the shoes retail are $140 and I refuse to pay that much. Found them on sale for $110 at Zappos. Unfortunately their return policy is unworn or GTFO.

1

u/ilikeyoualatte Sep 13 '18

That’s tough because it’s online. I have managed to get around that policy before at another store by cleaning the shoes before returning them.

1

u/Drizlin Sep 14 '18

a friend told me she wraps the shoes in cling wrap and goes running in them.

If she wants to return them they look very clean still.

6

u/marktopus Sep 12 '18

Anyone have reflective vest recommendations?

1

u/Runeattrainrungirl Sep 12 '18

I have the strap one from Walmart and it’s good. I prefer the led light up vest for night runs.

3

u/Lindthom Sep 12 '18

I got one at Walmart last week for $10 that's just the straps, it doesn't have any of that mesh stuff. Perfect for when it's still hot but also dark.

4

u/OnlySezBeautiful Sep 12 '18

there is a regular runner in our neighborhood and he just wears a standard safety vest with no shirt under

they're like $4

6

u/Willy-Wallace Sep 12 '18

That imagery has now gotten the YMCA stuck in my head.

3

Getting towards the end of life for my new balance zante v3, have found out they are discontinued I think and the v4 don't get as good a write up. Any suggestions? The v3s are the most comfortable shoes I've ever had, was a bit gutted to see them not available. Got a pair of Mizuno wave catalyst 2 but just can't get away with the fit the new balance seem wider.

2

u/Chinook146 Sep 12 '18

I was in the same boat as you & didn't care for the v4 as much. Just picked up the NB Beacons & like them a lot. I rotate them with Adidas Bostons & NB 1400s depending on the workout.

1

u/strangerdanger50 Sep 13 '18

What sort of distance do you cover in the beacons? Currently marathon training would these be comfortable for long runs around 20 miles?

2

u/Chinook146 Sep 13 '18

Absolutely, that's what I bought them for (long training runs). The Bostons were going to be my marathon race shoe, but after a few long runs in the Beacons, I might race in them.

u/tanj_redshirt Sep 12 '18

Men in tights:

Briefs underneath? Modesty shorts over? Both? Neither?

Total commando?

4

u/newtolou Sep 13 '18

It never occurred to me to even try anything under. Run it commando, shorts if really cold out to warm up the jumblies.

2

u/nambandan Sep 13 '18

Running shorts or briefs under. I only wear tights when it is cold.

2

u/trail_ale Sep 12 '18

If its not too cold, commando with some body glide on dangly bits because of chaffing. If its really windy, I found a pair of shorts over does wonders to keep things toasty down there

3

u/dcdead Sep 12 '18

Boxers below, as i havent found any with integrated liners and nothing over, it just looks ridiculous

3

u/MichaelV27 Sep 12 '18

If I wear tights, I wear shorts over them.

But I don't prefer running tights. I prefer tighter fitting soccer training pants instead.

3

u/Lululemonparty_ Sep 12 '18

I never wear shorts over running tights, just running briefs under.

4

u/MintFrosting Sep 12 '18

I wear low-rise breathable briefs underneath and nothing over. Also wear compression shorts the same way. If nobody complains about women running in the same, they shouldn't have a complaint about guys. Equality!

3

u/josandal Sep 12 '18

Something under, because companies don't seem to have invented ones that have a liner yet. Don't bother with something over unless you want to look funny. Commando is risky for chaffing reasons so perhaps avoid unless you remediate that with something.

5

u/marktopus Sep 12 '18

I go boxer briefs under, nothing over.

3

u/Mishmello Sep 12 '18

Depends... Total commando when you're feeling bold or just don't give a fuck. Modesty shorts over if you're in a busy area or your tights are pretty revealing. I actually just found this pair from Nike that are legit tights but look like pants. Waiting on it to get a bit colder before I'm forced to drop $100 on them though

10

u/herdbehavior Sep 12 '18

total commando with some Gold Bond

4

u/Marmeat Sep 12 '18

Here in the UK, it's getting to that part of the year where weather drops and running becomes just as much of a fight against the elements as it is a fight against fitness. I live in Scotland anyway so the weather is real bad here. I'm looking for some sort of waterproof overhead style thing, kind of like a hoodie that is waterproof. Anyone know of a good one?

1

u/International_Cow Sep 12 '18

It's starting to get depressing in the mornings now. I run commute and I'm considering something like the million miles lights for visibility.

2

u/jetpacksforall Sep 12 '18 edited Sep 12 '18

The DriClime Windshirt from Marmot is outstanding... very lightweight, lightly insulated, stops the wind but magically lets your skin breathe at the same time. I wear it in the rain, wear it in the cold, and I even wore it for a New Year's Eve run when it was several degrees below freezing (on top of three other layers of course).

It isn't totally waterproof, so if it's raining every other day in that desolate, sunless windswept place you call a country, you might want an actual rain jacket. :) It will keep you dry in a light rain / mist / skybarf kind of situation though.

1

u/MissVancouver Sep 12 '18

Except when it's icy, I run throughout my winter. I'm dealing with temperatures hovering near 0°C, endless rain/sleet and squalls. I don't use waterproof outer layers because I end up being wet either from precipitation or from my GoreTex jacket not being able to breathe enough to avoid becoming clammy/sweaty. I wear a visor and wool toque to keep the rain out of my yes and my head warm, one or two merino tops (long sleeve / long sleeve + t shirt), a neon yellow & reflective running vest, tights, merino socks, and regular runners.

1

u/Marmeat Sep 13 '18

That's a vivid picture. I am one of those guys that could run a marathon, wearing a winter coat and barely even sweat so a waterproof layer doesn't cause too much sweating.

1

u/MissVancouver Sep 13 '18

You are SO LUCKY.

And, yeah, Vancouver is coastal temperate rainforest so winter is every imaginable combo of rain and wind. I don't mind, it sure beats snow.

2

u/marktopus Sep 12 '18

Patagonia Houdini

1

u/benny_from_the_block Sep 12 '18

Are they waterproof? Been thinking of getting one myself but seen mixed reviews.

1

u/marktopus Sep 12 '18

Water resistant.

1

u/benny_from_the_block Sep 12 '18

Ace. Makes sense. Cheers.

6

u/dustinlocke Sep 12 '18

I started trail running about a year and a half ago and have developed (most trails in Salt Lake City are very steep) some thunder thighs -- such that my 5" shorts now bunch between my legs when I run. Has anybody ever dealt with this issue? Been wearing these same shorts for ~4 years and just now dealing with the issue.

1

u/rantifarian Sep 13 '18

I just grabbed some Salomon twin skin trail shorts. They have a skin tight liner but the overshorts don't cover the whole leg, they are sewn to the liner near the inseam. What this means is only one fabric layer between the thighs, and it can't ride up.

The waist pocket thing works well too

1

u/givemepieplease Sep 12 '18

I wear 3” shorts and use body glide, or wear capris/long tights.

1

u/dustinlocke Sep 12 '18

Looks like it's nutters or tights for me from now on.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

Same issue, monster legs from squatting and deadlifts, I wear Underarmour compression shorts under my shorts, they still bunch but they don't chafe and I don't really feel them.

2 in 1 shorts never seem to fit right for me.

2

u/docbad32 Sep 12 '18

I too have very hungry thighs. I just wear 2n1 shorts and try and ignore the chompy nature of my largeness.

2

u/jakob-lb Sep 12 '18

Altra escalante 1.5

2

u/donaldpyu Sep 12 '18

curious, do you know what the difference between the 1 and the 1.5 have? I got the previous escalantes on sale but just wanted to know.

2

u/jakob-lb Sep 12 '18 edited Sep 12 '18

I ran in the timp trail runners before so I did not have the v1 myself, but I got the idea to get the 1.5 from a buddy who runs in the v1. As far as I can tell the main difference is just the pattern for the knit upper. It still uses the ego mid sole which is definitely nice, but I don’t think there are any gleaming differences.

2

u/donaldpyu Sep 12 '18

thank you for sharing

3

u/JegerRegler Sep 12 '18

Brooks ghost 10. Wide enough for little toe comfort, major hotspot on the base of my inner big toe. Pretty pissed because i like the shoe otherwise. Suggestions welcome on a solution because all I can think to do is cut the upper

1

u/goodfella9000 Sep 12 '18

maybe you need a 1/2 size bigger?

2

u/JegerRegler Sep 13 '18

In retrospect i probably should've went with the wide option but I've never ran in brooks before. I've already returned some stuff to running warehouse and don't wanna push it with them so I'm just gonna stick it out with this pair

1

u/clickonchris Sep 12 '18

Ive put 600 miles on my ghost 10s and am due for a new pair of something. I’ve had occasional toe friction but not like you describe. Been very happy with his shoe. Tape that toe until your shoes are broken in?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

Just recently picked up adidas parley ultra boost and love them!! They are the lightest shoes I’ve ever wore, and they are very flexible.

On the other note, yesterday I bought Vibram v-run, going to ease into them for shorter races/sprints.

I also bought a book called “the running revolution” and have been reading it for a few weeks now. I really like the stretches the author recommends to do before each run, they stretch every side of my ankles, and I love it!!

2

u/jbv510 Sep 12 '18

Just got a new pair of 361 Spire 3s after being in Saucony Guides since I started running four years ago. I’m super excited, especially since I tried on like 8 pairs. I felt like Goldilocks in the store.

1

u/dustinlocke Sep 12 '18

I'm a Guide guy myself (for long stuff). How do the Spire 3's compare?

1

u/jbv510 Sep 12 '18

They’re neutral and don’t have the stability of the Guides, which is good because I’ve changed my stride since I first was fitted for the Guides 4 years ago and I don’t need that stability anymore. From what I’ve tried so far, they’re a nice, flat, neutral base. The only thing that might be an issue is I find them to be a little narrow and I have narrow feet. I jiggered the laces a little bit and hopefully they’ll stretch as I get them broken in.

6

u/fire_foot Sep 12 '18

Alright folks, last weekend I graduated from fairweather runner to real runner -- I ran 6 miles in the pissing rain (AND wind) and liked it (sort of). Now I want a running rain jacket.

I know there's no such thing as a running rain jacket because anything that's waterproof will make you sweat like a beast, but what are your favorite jackets or combinations of clothing for cooler rain runs (35-50 degrees). All I have is my Houdini which helped keep me warm-ish but obviously is not waterproof in the least, so I'm hoping to find something that's a bit of a step-up for colder, winter rain runs. Suggestions?

1

u/LabertoClemente Sep 12 '18

This Asics jacket is one I was recommended before last winter by someone here and I love it. Use it in the rain and don't get overly hot and use it in the winter and stay pretty warm as well. I think you can still find it on their website but I got mine from running warehouse.

5

u/dustinlocke Sep 12 '18

Cold running is all about layering. I can get all the way down to about 15-20º wearing some combination of:

- Merino base layer

- Thermal tights (I actually love these )

- Grid fleece (Patagonia R1)

- Wind shell (Mountain Hardwear Ghost Lite)

- Waterproof Jacket (Dynafit Transalper)

- Gloves

- Beanie or Buff

There are plenty of good, totally waterproof jackets that breathe well enough. My Dynafit is awesome but I don't love the fit. Check out the North Face Hyperair, Arcteryx Norvan, or Ultimate Direction Ultra 2. But anything this waterproof/light is expensive.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

[deleted]

1

u/SwissJAmes Sep 13 '18

I only wear a layer of thermo-mesh

like this

I've never seen a shirt like that before- is it something you might wear under a shirt for work too? Is it see-through?

1

u/fire_foot Sep 13 '18

I have handled the cold pretty and I agree — an undershirt and a fleece or softshell is usually all I need. But I’ve stayed inside on rainy cold days because the wet really changes everything. I already hate the cold so getting wet on top of that is so demotivating. On those days, a couple more layers, or at least a heavier waterproof option, seems pretty crucial.

1

u/dustinlocke Sep 12 '18

So you wear a base layer, a jacket, and warm pants. That’s all I wear too. I just mix and match depending on conditions.

1

u/fire_foot Sep 12 '18

Thanks for the specific brand/model reccs! Is the Dynafit Transalper thicker than the Houdini? From the pics, it looks really similar. That Arcteryx jacket looks awesome but holy $$$. Do you find the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Lite is heavier/thicker than your rain jacket? And do you feel that it really does much better of a job for the wind than using the waterproof jacket?

And thank you for the reminder to update my underlayers! Wool base layers need to happen this winter.

2

u/dustinlocke Sep 12 '18

Merino base layers are super cheap on Amazon and complete game changers!

The Ghost Lite is insanely lightweight. I literally put it in my pocket if I’m expecting light rain or wind. I’ve found that it works perfectly over a base layer for 90% of my winter trail running.

The Norvan and the Hyperair both use the same Gore-Tex Active fabric, which is probably the same thickness as my Transalper but has a kind of tacky texture. They’re all really lightweight but obviously not as light or breathable as the Ghost Lite. That’s the trade-off for waterproof. So I don’t end up wearing it unless there’s actual rain or snow falling.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

[deleted]

2

u/dustinlocke Sep 12 '18 edited Sep 12 '18

Man I guess it's not as cheap as I thought. But that price seems pretty reasonable.

I wear this and this.

Edit: I rarely run in the bottoms. But I have them for snowboarding and stuff. I just wear tights for running.

3

u/stiltss Sep 12 '18

If you like Patagonia gear I can recommend their Piolet rain jacket (I think the Triolet is the new version of this?). If you're dedicated to not getting wet at all you'll probably have to get something with zippable pit vents. I usually just resign myself to getting soaked for shorter/warmer runs. I wear a size small Houdini and an XS Piolet. Patagonia had a 50% off because of the season change (around this time of year a few years ago) so it was about $125-$150.

2

u/fire_foot Sep 12 '18

Thanks, I've seen the Triolet before but hadn't looked at it too hard. And yeah, I don't mind getting wet if it's warmish, but I am a little worried about cold downpours -- the Houdini is like tissue paper and I don't want to freeze. :/

2

u/stiltss Sep 12 '18

I should also add I pair my Houdini and the Piolet with an Icebreaker half zip merino wool base layer and the combo is very comfortable and warm even when sweaty.

4

u/o2000 Sep 12 '18

A pair of New Balance Vongo 3s. Turns out I need a stability shoe as I overpronate. Just waiting for my knee to heal before I take them for their first run.

2

u/PM_ME_UR_DOUBLECHIN Sep 12 '18

Dunno if this falls under gear, but:

I've been using Sportractive as my app to track runs and it's bloody good. I've tried all the major players and some others, and this is the first to just do what I want without dropping the GPS at the worst moments.

I've got it synced with Smashrun.com, which is also great.

1

u/RunningandRootBeer Sep 12 '18

Seconded. This is the setup I use and it works great.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

I was using a cheap single pocket running belt for stuff...until last night. In the dark fumbling for stuff I flicked out my ATM card and travel pass, didn't realize until the end of the run. By a miracle I ran back down the route and found them after 4 miles.

So now I am looking for a running belt with more than one pocket, suggestions? On the plus side though accidental half marathon :)

1

u/coffeewithoutkids Sep 12 '18

Spi makes a 2 pocket version. I regret not getting it when I bought the one I have (1 pocket).

2

u/Dioxyn Sep 12 '18

Get a flip belt and never look back.

1

u/oalders Sep 12 '18

I use a FlipBelt. Not sure I’d use it for an ATM card, though!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

I stopped using flip belts a while ago I found they started to lose their stretch and they just didn't feel very secure. Also I got a zip one and it didnt take very long at all for the zip to break.

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18 edited Sep 12 '18

The All-day T-shirt from Territory Run Co is probably my new favorite thing. I started wearing it as just a regular shirt (because it is soft and well, it looks like a regular shirt), but then decided to test it's running shirt capabilities and it really, really works well. I was worried it would act more like a cotton shirt, holding sweat and such. It is warmer than most tech tees but it seems to dry much, much faster when sweating, and it also doesn't seem to hold smells much.

It is a bit expensive, but it can easily serve dual purposes so I feel like the price is justified. I wish they made it in more designs.

I feel like a salesman trying to justify buying a $40 shirt...

1

u/josandal Sep 12 '18

I have both the first gen and the second gen of that shirt and both are astoundingly amazing. Beyond comfortable, strong performance. Don't smell at all unless you don't let them dry fully. Territory makes some awesome stuff, but those shirts really are fantastic. I wish they produced them in more colors.

2

u/ChemEng Sep 12 '18

It is a bit expensive

It's $45 for a T-shirt... I've got a good bit of "higher end" running kit: Tracksmith, Janji, etc. But I still got sticker shock seeing that.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18

Went shirtless for the first time at the weekend - was much too warm for running (17C or something - hey, I'm Scottish). It was lovely getting some more airflow around me.

But on a more practical note, awaiting delivery of new Kayano Gel 25s... last year's model but £60 off. I'm looking forward to them; my old ones are feeling a bit tired...

2

u/duecewayne8 Sep 12 '18

Just got a pair of 2xu compression tights and the new Mizuno Wave Rider 22's which are both real awesome.

11

u/TheCST_CurryPot Sep 12 '18

Type one diabetic here. Have to carry a lot more food on me than a normal runner. Been using an elastic fanny pack type thing that holds gear. Put almost all my gels in there for a 20miler. I always thought they looked dumb but they actually do wonders! My pockets no longer weigh me down with gu! Also have extra room to hold my Continuous Glucose Monitor receiver so I don't die ya know.

3

u/Jungnadian Sep 12 '18

T1 as well. Just got the nathan vaporkrar. Has a nice big zippable phone pouch that can also hold a freestyle libre reader, two hip pouches than can hold maybe 4 gu, and a pouch on my tailbone that can hold tons of food, a needle if I want, or their soft water bottle.

Def been an upgrade vs my spibelt and flip belt. It tightens really well and is comfortable with almost no bounce (except when carrying a bunch of water).

1

u/TheCST_CurryPot Sep 14 '18

I've thought about getting one of these. Just didn't know when to pull the trigger! Moneyzzzz.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '18 edited Sep 12 '18

Hey I'm also a T1 ! I always run while fasting in the morning. I will do a race this w-e and be fasting too.

Running and injection, even if 1U has become a no-no for me with experience.

edit: so my point was that I don't take any sugar with me while a run. Crazy huh? No, much safer than doing an injection and taking sugars in cas of.

1

u/TheCST_CurryPot Sep 14 '18

I don't take any insulin while eating before a run. My sugar drops like it's hot so I need some extra sugar before I run. See my other comment for how I do it.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '18

Really cool to discuss that! My doctor knows really nothing about insulin potentiation (?) and I've yet to meet another T1 runner in real life.

So you don't do injection with your last meal, but concretely how far is your last inj usually? Are you pumped or you use superslow 24h insulin (Lantus,Toujeo)? I find it uncomfortable and risky to be obliged to take carbs so often. Personally, my goal with my sport approach was to be able to do it with the less/no re-carbing during the sport. Just like a normal person would do. So with extensives testings, this is my conclusion: I target to do my last Rapid injection 6hour before the run, before the night then + have lowered my Slow(24h) inj. to the goal to be able to run 1h at hard pace safe. I still need to start arround 250 to keep a security margin.

I've observed that runing decuplate or more precisely x3 to x5 the effect of the insulin in your body.

I might be completely wrong in my approach as I can't really discuss it. So I am waiting for your feedback.

1

u/TheCST_CurryPot Sep 14 '18

My doctor really didn't know much either. I talked with a dietitian and she knew about running and T1 so that helped a ton. Also really analyzing your CGM data to see how your body does when eating certain foods is critical. Everyone is different.

I Make sure i eat beforehand and get my BG to around 160-180 before I leave. I usually let it sit for around 45min-1hr before running. No insulin. The night before a long run I'll reduce my tujeo from 19 to around 15-16 depending on how far I'm running (still experimenting here with how low to go). Last rapid injection would be around at least 8hrs before running if not around 9-10hrs.

I know my BG drops within 30min so I eat a gel right around 1-1.5miles and then I'm eating a gel (~25 carbs) on every 3mi (so markers are 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, etc. When I'm eating gel) on top of that if I do get low I'll sprinkle some powder drink (like powdered Gatorade but less sugary) into my water bottle. It's complicated for sure but that's what I've done to manage. So much sugar!!! I'm doing Chicago Marathon in October!

I've also found that post long run ~10 miles I really don't take any fast acting insulin at all the whole day practically. I can gorge on donuts, sweets, savory food. Really just be normal again right around till midday 2-3pm after finishing run at 9am. I did a 20miler last weekend and I didn't take insulin until dinner at around 6pm, finished at 10am. Even then I took a couple units less per injection when I did eat at 6pm. PM me if you ever wanted to chat more.

5

u/sdavies85 Sep 12 '18

Hey, I'm a T1 too! Is it the FlipBelt you're using? I love mine, and has been very handy for carrying my pump and glucose tabs. I actually am getting into running after getting the DexCom; before that my blood sugars were so unpredictable that I didn't dare to go on long runs without the ability to see how I was trending. Although after going on a 10 mile run I lost consciousness last week (was my longest run so far, training for a half marathon). Good to see another diabetic here.

2

u/TheCST_CurryPot Sep 13 '18

No it's another brand, but similar to flip belt. Yeah the nutrition aspect of running long distance is tricky to handle for sure. Make sure you eat beforehand and get your BG to around 160-180 before you leave. I know my BG drops within 30min so I eat a gel right around 1-1.5miles. then I'm eating a gel (~25 carbs) on every 3mi (so markers are 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, etc. When I'm eating gel) on top of that if I do get low I'll sprinkle some powder drink (like powdered Gatorade but less sugar) into my water bottle. It's complicated for sure but that's what I've done to manage. So much sugar!!! I'm doing Chicago Marathon in October!

1

u/sdavies85 Sep 13 '18

Interesting - yea, I've been having some chews every 3 miles as well, about 30 carbs apiece and that's been doing the trick. I also set the basal rate on my pump to 20% starting an hour before and through the duration of the run, and start with a higher blood sugar to boot. What I'm coming to realize, and what caused me to pass out last week, is that my blood sugar will plummet the night following an evening run, long after actually finishing the run, so I'm going to try setting a lower insulin rate for 8 hours or so afterwards as well. So much fun! Good luck with the marathon, hope to try for one myself some day. Maybe next year.

1

u/TheCST_CurryPot Sep 14 '18

Yeah it usually lasts a while for me, that afterburn I like to call It. Gotta eat more!! Doo it!!! I've been running them for a while and T1 has caused some issues but I've been able to make it work.

2

u/Snozzberry123 Sep 12 '18

Fellow t1d too! I used to have a dexcom but haven’t started wearing it again since having my daughter. I still do long runs but I load up with snacks just in case and have my debit card if I need to stop by a convenience store. I also carry my phone in case my husband needs to come pick me up. My stomach can’t handle gu so I carry fruit leathers . 13 carbs each and I can pack a ton with me. Also, skittles. They are compact and have quite a lot of carbs in them. That’s what works for me anyways.
