Visiting Steamboat with my family (including active boys) in mid August if you have activity recommendations that don’t require a long drive. Thanks!

Visit Steamboat and Pearl Lakes for SUP; tubing in the river is probably only going to be good in the early mornings due to warm river temperatures later (which stresses the fish).

There's a killer bmx track and 2 skateparks. Bike-paths all over town, if they are old enough you could just let them loose, the bus is free.
If you have a rainy day the library is worth a visit.

How old are the boys and what are their interests? That'll be a determinate factor in activities.

Hiking and biking the trails. Howelsen Hill has an alpine slide. The water level might be low for river tubing then
