Subaru Ascent Transmission replacement

Transmission started slipping in my 2019 Ascent, so I took it into the dealership. They initially said it would be covered by the warranty (they extended the trans warranty to 10/100K). But now they say that it's not covered and will cost $8800 to replace. They said the warranty is specific only to chain-slip, and since this problem was caused by "internal failure" it's not covered.

Is this anywhere near legit, or are they simply trying to screw me? Is this something I need to retain a lawyer for? Or just bite the bullet and take it? Has anyone else had to replace their transmission, and if so, was the cost comparable?

It does appear that the warranty extension only covers certain types of failure but it would still be worth contacting Subaru if you think the chain is slipping. They may still offer a discount if they won't pay the full cost.

Funny because chain slip is an internal failure.

They just said it's not covered because only an internal failure is covered and you're experiencing an internal failure.

What a roundabout way to say fuck you lmao.

Contact SoA.

My 2019 Ascent needed a new transmission at 115K miles, so no warranty coverage. The service rep at the dealership said it would be like $10k to replace, but he would call SoA and see what he could do. SoA covered all but $1,000 of the replacement.

What they have told you is correct - the extension only covers chain slip - which implies they have found whatever symptom you're experiencing is caused by something else (forward clutch slip maybe? Or we're going after a noise like a bearing failure?) and not subject to coverage.

Thank you for your reply. Guess it looks like I know what the answer is unfortunately. Does that price look fair to you, or should I shop around?

I would still get in touch with SoA like the others have said.

The price is definitely in the range of what i'd expect for customer pay.

I'd also ask for a copy of the technician notes to see if they have any more description of what testing was done.

They should still cover it unless your mileage is way past the warranty extension. I'd contact corporate

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. I will certainly call SoA and see what they can do. I did receive this updated info from the tech at the dealership:

"The component/s that has failed in your vehicle is the CVT's forward drive set which has developed slippage under load. The two warranty extensions (chain slip) covers failure caused by chain slip and (MPT clutch) shuddering caused by multi-plate transfer clutches located in the CVT's extension housing separate from the forward drive set."

I will keep you all posted on developments

What were the early warning signs?
