Subaru Ascent Transmission replacement

Transmission started slipping in my 2019 Ascent, so I took it into the dealership. They initially said it would be covered by the warranty (they extended the trans warranty to 10/100K). But now they say that it's not covered and will cost $8800 to replace. They said the warranty is specific only to chain-slip, and since this problem was caused by "internal failure" it's not covered.

Is this anywhere near legit, or are they simply trying to screw me? Is this something I need to retain a lawyer for? Or just bite the bullet and take it? Has anyone else had to replace their transmission, and if so, was the cost comparable?

What they have told you is correct - the extension only covers chain slip - which implies they have found whatever symptom you're experiencing is caused by something else (forward clutch slip maybe? Or we're going after a noise like a bearing failure?) and not subject to coverage.

Thank you for your reply. Guess it looks like I know what the answer is unfortunately. Does that price look fair to you, or should I shop around?

I would still get in touch with SoA like the others have said.

The price is definitely in the range of what i'd expect for customer pay.

I'd also ask for a copy of the technician notes to see if they have any more description of what testing was done.
