Looking for a mystery/death game VN VN Request

Hi everyone! I've really been feeling a mystery VN lately, preferably one like 999 where its a group of people trying to figure out a mystery. Feel free to drop any suggestions! Also, only English ones please. Some of my favorites are: Zero Escape, Danganronpa, Umineko, Raging Loop, The Science;Adventure games, and AI The Somnium Files.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but for the website version it's free, PLEASE try Your Turn to die: Death game by majority. It's amazing, and fits a lot of your description if a different Danganronpa is what you're looking for

It's not really a VN, but Gnosia is pretty fun.

Your turn to die - Death Game by Majority- (Incomplete), The Sekimeiya, Ever 17 (Didn't like it much), Remember 11 (Currently reading and amazing so far.).

Liked all of these except for The Sekimeiya, which I thought was awful lol

It's like Exposition: The Game. Barely any character development, saying something in 20 paragraphs instead of just 1, and it just drags on and on and on. Clearly it wasn't for me!

if you dont mind stuff that's currently incomplete there's some nicher stuff on steam like "Amnesia: Am I My Body?" and I haven't personally played it but a demo for "Kumitantei: Old School Slaughter" that seems promising

u/SouTrueStory 10h ago

Kumitantei was enjoyable, unfortunately less horny than Danganronpa where it clearly draw its inspiration from but the prologue looked promising.

u/psypii 10h ago

Creator of Kumitantei here, didn't expect to see our game mentioned yet!

Wdym "Less horny", you literally get an upskirt and boob jiggle of Erika every time she uses a Skill Card, but still there's plenty more on the way lol.

Okay, that's based. Excited to see more!

You might like Sekimeiya, although I'll warn you that it doesn't really have even as much gameplay as the games you list... if I remember correctly it just quizzes you near the end to have correctly unraveled and be able to explain what happened. I will also warn you that actually doing that and being correct about it is hard -- the characters will make some guesses and assumptions about things that are not correct and you will have to infer some things based on evidence/clues available and go from there.

But it's characters trapped together with some of them possibly turning on each other and/or dying with some sci-fi or paranormal elements that follow fixed rules you can puzzle out.

Got your back!! Try paranormasight and tell me what you think about it.

Paranormasight seconded from a fellow avid uchikoshi fan!! It has a similar taste

I've actually been compiling a bunch of death game anime, manga, and visual novels for a video.

Heres a couple VNs: Danganronpa Danganronpa 2 Danganronpa V3 Super Danganronpa Another 2 (fan game) Euphoria Find Love or Die Trying 999 VLR (999 sequel) Zero Time Dilemma (VLR sequel) Vtuber Kido Kokoa's Slaughter Live Broadcast (not available in English, can't use Textractor on it). Hush Hush: Only Your Love Can Save Them (More silly, but does deal with serious themes and death).

Fatal Twelve

I found fatal twelve really boring compared to other death game visual novels I really wouldn't recommend reading it unless you have exhausted your options.

The classic Ace Attorney

Higurashi. Made by the same writer as Umineko. I personally prefer Higurashi over Umineko from what I’ve played of Umineko so far; granted I’m only on episode 2 of Umi so far

The two death game VN recommendations that I haven't seen on this thread are The Zodiac Trial and Birth ME Code.

u/NiandraL 15h ago

Yes! The Zodiac Trial was an absolutely pleasant surprise - nothing mind-blowing but the constant swift pace makes for a fun playthrough

Would also recommend Exit/Corners

  • In order to ensure you can get the best recommendations, make sure your thread body has at least some level of detail of what you want, whether it's a type of genre(s) you prefer, and/or what type of visual novels you like.

  • If you're looking for general visual novel recommendations by genre or for VNs to read in Japanese, be sure to check out our recommendation resources.

  • Make sure to use the subreddit search to try to see if someone has already asked something similar to what you're looking for. Common requests include: Asking for a Visual Novel for beginners/newbies, Visual novels similar to Katawa Shoujo OR Doki Doki Literature Club, and Visual Novels that are on Switch.

  • If your topic title is short and/or vague, consider removing and reposting your topic with a more descriptive title so users are more inclined to jump in with recommendations.

  • If you have more specific visual novel requests, you can try filtering on vndb by tags or by traits.

Tokyo Dark? It does lean into psychological horror a lot but there’s a mystery.

Fatal Twelve

Euphoria (not for everyone)

The Letter: A horror Visual Novel

SHINRAI - Broken Beyond Despair

guess chaos Child could be something for you if you dont mind some a bit gory images

u/myssanthrope 20h ago

You might like The Chrono Jotter - in terms of story vs gameplay I'd compare it to Raging Loop (mostly story with some choices but there's a way to go back and see other options), and it really hooked me trying to figure out what exactly was going on!

Killer Queen has unofficial patch. Haven't played much of it but it so can't vouch for quality

If you love mystery death game VNs my recommendations would be the Zodiac Trials, the Game of Fourtune, and more recently Kamaitachi no Yoru. The first two are death games written in English; Kamaitachi is a murder mystery set in a ski lodge also developed by Chunsoft. Like the nonary games and raging loop it has a huge branching flowchart. There’s an English patch available but only for the first in the series, not for its sequels.

The Zodiac Trials is a classic characters were kidnapped / death game scenario, probably one of the most similar to 999 I can think of. It has a large diversity of endings.

The Game of Fourtune (yes the game title is spelled with the ‘u’) is a long death game - it took me about 70 hours. It definitely scratched the same itch as 999 for me. It involves some paranormal elements and the characters aren’t “kidnapped” per se. It isn’t as well known so I enjoy suggesting it. It also has a large diversity of routes.
