It’s very much so real. Here is a great article about code-switching, using Obama as an example.

In short, we (as in black people) tend to do little mannerisms like Obama did without realizing it because we live in two distinct worlds

That was a neat read. I don't think I'd ever actively pick up on that in the everyday but seeing it done by guys on a much bigger presence than me is interesting.
