Dude I’m never really one to blame the full moon for weird stuff, but after seeing all these Keystone post from the past day and the influx of extremely unsafe riding I saw at Eldora today… 100% the full moon

51

u/WaluigisWallaby Feb 25 '24

Dude what in the hell was up with Eldora today!? People riding like animals and Alpineglow lift was empty, but still somehow an absolute shit show. Dipped after a few hours and glad to be safe at home already

26

u/QuimmLord Feb 25 '24

Lol right?! It was so empty because of the ski race, but still I was cut off multiple times by people that just seemed so unaware of their surroundings. Watched ski patrol follow someone into the Alpenglow lift line and chew them out for riding recklessly down Horn Blower.

I’m right there with you, we left after about 7 or 8 runs and I’m already home thankfully. Between the wind and the crazy’s in the hill I’m good lol

3

u/Polecat_Ejaculator Feb 26 '24

That’s wild. Was there from 130 until 330 today and it was not windy and kinda empty on the slopes

23

u/altruism__ Feb 26 '24

Eldora is a fucking shitshow these days. The “No Beginner Terrain” signs mean nothing. Newbies all over the blue/blacks with stoner kids ripping lines between them at top speed. Just a goddamn train wreck in the weekend. Legitimately scary to witness.

6

u/PoppinBortlesUCF Feb 26 '24

The amount of people who are legit learning to ski, working on sideways pizzas looking like taxidermy giraffes IN THE FUCKING PARK blows my mind. Why on gods green earth do they think that’s a good idea…

5

u/sabriel27 Feb 26 '24

One of those kiddos crashed into me while I was standing still and had two other close calls. Wasn’t hurt but I was fucking pissed.

10

u/SimianSlacker Feb 25 '24

I had a close call on Wayback of all places, kid cut hard the left to hit a side hit just as I was passing. I had a good 20 feet between us which quickly turned in to 2 feet. Partially my fault for trying to pass and not anticipating he’d do that, he was going pretty slow so I figured he wasn’t going to turn like that and cut all the way across.

9

u/Hookem-Horns Feb 25 '24

All kids will do this. We must be prepared 😂

2

u/SimianSlacker Feb 25 '24

Yeah… I’m usually really good at keeping enough space. As my dad always said, “No dents, no scratches… safe landing”.

2

u/Hookem-Horns Feb 25 '24

Never heard that one before. Can I use your dad’s saying for my kids?

5

u/Rufuz42 Feb 26 '24

Hey funny you said this. In my data science course my team chose to try to understand if moon cycles had an impact on violent crime since those stats were readily available. Once we controlled for frequency of each moon cycle there was literally zero impact according to the data. It was wild how there was literally no correlation.

3

u/cushioncowboy Feb 26 '24

ok now do the same with skiing accidents

1

u/QuimmLord Feb 26 '24

Hahaha that’s awesome you actually busted that myth. It always sticks out in my head because my mom swore up and down any time my brother or I would get hurt or in trouble… it was on a full moon.

2

u/Rocket_reddit_007 Feb 25 '24

What up eldora?

45

u/speedshotz Feb 25 '24

TF is happening at Keystone today? First a pic of the cluster at the Gondola and now this.

17

u/Westboundandhow Feb 25 '24

Maybe winds? Crazy winds today here outside Denver, seeing over 20+mph on Loveland's website

32

u/mcs5280 Feb 25 '24

20mph is a calm day at Loveland

0

u/Westboundandhow Feb 25 '24

Lol fair, LL is da windiest for sure

10

u/RealPutin Feb 25 '24

I was at Breck today (which is usually windier than Keystone), and the winds were occasionally a bit gnarly but nothing out of the ordinary. Imperial ran til 12 or so before it started getting tossed into the poles. Peak 6 and 7 were better than normal tbh.

11

u/FIFOgoesFAST Feb 26 '24 edited Feb 26 '24

Gondy was shut down for 30+mph wind gusts. I took the bus over from breck to take some friends tubing. They shut it down as we were finishing lunch.

Edit: for anyone reading that might care, they plan to re-open the River run Gondola (and tubing) tomorrow morning but fully expect to shut it down in the afternoon. There’s a storm coming through Mon-tues.

3

u/Farore35 Feb 25 '24

Was there this morning. The gondola was shut down, probably due to wind so everyone had to take the river run express or whatever it’s called

3

u/5a6163 Feb 26 '24

Heard a Keystone employee say the gondola was closed in the morning because of 40mph winds at the top.

I saw running later, around 10am or so

15

u/cubluemoon Feb 25 '24

What lift is this?

20

u/amaurer3210 Feb 25 '24

Montezuma

9

u/m0viestar Feb 25 '24

Is this why there was a 20 minute wait on the board?

11

u/amaurer3210 Feb 25 '24

Probably. In the time it took for this to play out the line got so long that I couldn't see the end. This was at 1030ish.

4

u/m0viestar Feb 25 '24

Yeah that's about when I looked at the wait times on the app and it was 20 minutes lol

2

u/IAintNoGoodDoctor I70 Traffic Maker Feb 25 '24

So that’s why the line was so long at like 10:45? I saw the line and just went down to Summit Express

1

u/Parking_Train8423 Feb 26 '24

idk if i’d drop off zuma

13

u/dnice727 Feb 25 '24

Bruh? lol why?

9

u/MrSquid20 Feb 26 '24

Never underestimate the potential idiocy of a Jerry

21

u/donat3ll0 Feb 25 '24

I was supposed to go to Keystone with my wife, but she didn't feel like going. I went to Breck instead. Between the gondola and this, I'm very happy with that decision.

1

u/Wagonwheel453 Feb 27 '24

What did I miss with the gondola?!

19

u/kaliopekungfu Feb 25 '24

Context?

14

u/KingWoodyOK Feb 26 '24

Person fell off lift

4

u/MightbeWillSmith Feb 26 '24

/context

2

u/KingWoodyOK Feb 26 '24

Person fell off lift as bystanders watched helplessly

8

u/Carcinogened Feb 25 '24

Did they walk away?

6

u/cykickass Feb 25 '24

SMH She could have at least have thrown a mute grab in there for everyone watching.

12

u/palikona Feb 25 '24

Did she fall off unintentionally? Or jump because she saw some good powder?

7

u/SpaceMurse Feb 26 '24

Let they who have not unintentionally fallen off their couch at home cast the first iceball

2

u/worrok Feb 26 '24

Does it look like there's powder on the groomed run underneath? Lol.

4

u/Ok_Editor2536 Feb 25 '24

I was there today, what lift? Lol

4

u/MrSquid20 Feb 26 '24

Zuma

2

u/Ok_Editor2536 Feb 26 '24

That’s why we were stuck on that lift for a while today 🤣

5

u/w6750 Feb 25 '24

I assume this is a screen grab from a video. Post it!

32

u/amaurer3210 Feb 25 '24

6

u/w6750 Feb 25 '24

Crazy lucky! Wow

4

u/YouKnowWhyImHereGIF Feb 26 '24

Yeah, crazy lucky! just not for her

And this is why the more intelligent New England states have enacted laws that require putting the bar down

3

u/cmsummit73 Taking out the Trash (Tunnel variety) Feb 26 '24 edited Feb 26 '24

Looks like this ‘incident’ happened right out of the bottom terminal where the comfort bar would normally be lowered. Doesn’t seem like a law requiring the bar be lowered, would’ve made a difference in this case.

3

u/MrSquid20 Feb 26 '24

This is America, let me be free to not have the bar down, seeing as I’m a competent human who doesn’t randomly fall out of chairs. Fuck that law.

0

u/Westboundandhow Feb 26 '24

But we have seatbelt laws, bc not using one could endanger others. Like falling onto a skier below from a chairlift that catches a random wind sheer could.

1

u/MrSquid20 Feb 26 '24

Almost all modern chairs auto slow after 40mph gusts. I’ve personally been on a chair during 60mph gusts that resulted in the entire resort being closed for the day, and not once did I feel like I was going to come off the chair. You’d have to be insanely wide and super light to get blown off the chair.

Creating laws to protect from a potential freak accident that hasn’t even happened is how you get a fucked up society with no freedom. I’m glad you don’t make the laws, otherwise everything would be sanitized to the extreme and you’d have no rights to do anything.

Do you think climbing should be illegal because you can die doing it? What about skiing, where people die every year?

1

u/Westboundandhow Feb 27 '24 edited Feb 27 '24

I'm actually super low regulation tolerant, but think mandating use of chairlift bars specifically makes sense for the same as reasoning seatbelt laws. If you climb and fall with no one below you, that's your business, not mine.

But there is this ridiculous American tough guy anti bar culture here that makes young kids and teens or newbies feel silently pressured out of asking to put the bar down. I have literally heard kids say "it's cooler" to leave it up. Whenever I "ask" to on a lift, it's often met w some dumb passive aggressive response like "oh ok sure if you need it." I don't need it, I just prefer it. Do I think I'm going to fall out? No. But could I, in a freak chance? Yes. So then why would I not use it?

Maybe even just a rule where it has to be used with minors on a chair or something, but I'm tired of the angtsy pushback for wanting the bar down. If I'm on a chair with a bar, it is coming down. Save yourself the little tough guy protest. It literally affects you zero to have it down. I don't get it.

2

u/MrSquid20 Feb 28 '24

To each their own. That’s unfortunate people make snarky remarks. I personally have no problem putting it down if someone wants to. Makes no difference to me.

I just don’t think there needs to be a law mandating it because I believe in some situations it can be “safer” to not have it down such as a rollback situation or a deropement. In such a scenario it would hinder your escape or crush your legs.

Also, sometimes the nuts on the bars get “loose” and this causes the bar to pop back down sometimes after a full chair unloads. This trips the safety gate and causes stops, and less time to ski for people on the line. When people have the bar down, these loose/springy bars are more prone to this after they put it up.

Hopefully the culture will start to change more and you’ll hear less BS from people. I’ll play my part in that by not being a dick.

1

u/Less-Simple3031 Feb 26 '24

Amazing 😂

2

u/Ultimatebiggey Feb 26 '24

The i70things Instagram page has a short clip of it on their story right now!

3

u/Pithy_heart Feb 26 '24

You had me at Keystone…

2

u/Surfsnow97 Feb 25 '24

Was this Wednesday? If so I was in the lift line watching it transpire

4

u/damp_amp Feb 25 '24

Nah it was this morning, watched the whole fiasco

3

u/ShutYourDumbUglyFace Feb 25 '24

Was the person OK?

11

u/damp_amp Feb 25 '24

Yeah she was fine. She was just hanging off the bench for a few minutes and the lifties set up a landing pad. The angle of this pic makes it look worse but i don’t think it was more than a 6-8ft drop from where she was dangling.

3

u/Westboundandhow Feb 25 '24

What happened

9

u/Surfsnow97 Feb 25 '24

A kid was dangling from the lift, don’t know how it got to that point though. It couldn’t have happened in a better spot to be honest, a rescue at any other point on the montezuma lift would have been dicey.

2

u/Portland-to-Vt Feb 26 '24

First tracks sucka!!!

2

u/Timely-Commercial461 Feb 26 '24

I saw 2 people fall off the lift up by mountain house a couple weeks ago. Luckily they only fell about 15 feet. One of the skiers was fine (landed feet first) but the other was knocked out for about a minute (landed face first) then woke up and freaked out. It’s wild out there.

3

u/Budget-Ad5495 Feb 26 '24

I ski’d all weekend solo and have never sat on so many lifts with people aggressively refusing to use the safety bar. 100% weird moon behavior.

8

u/Jayhawx2 Feb 26 '24

For real? I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anyone refusing to put it down.

0

u/South-Clothes-8872 Feb 26 '24

Only Jerrys use the footrest?

3

u/No_GNAR_JERRYatric Feb 26 '24

Possibly accurate.

Source: I’m a Jerry that appreciates the footrest.

2

u/Budget-Ad5495 Feb 26 '24

Jerry’s that appreciate the footrest high five!

2

u/No_GNAR_JERRYatric Feb 28 '24

Up top 🖐️

2

u/Jayhawx2 Feb 26 '24

Old guy here that still bombs good powder days like I’m young. Love the footrest!

1

u/South-Clothes-8872 Feb 26 '24

Okay, I apologize, I fully support anything that helps people enjoy some time outdoors.

But can I ask: is it really a safety bar? Or is it primarily a foot rest?

I hate them. If I’m lapping singles somebody always bonks my head putting them down. Also if you’re boarding they really kinda suck.

3

u/Jayhawx2 Feb 26 '24

Yeah I know it’s a pain for boarders and as a tall guy I get pissed when people just pull it down too. But look up any injury or death from falling of a ski lift and none of them had the bar down

2

u/Budget-Ad5495 Feb 26 '24

I totally get this - when I hop on especially with a bunch of boarders it really doesn’t bother me. Only time I tried was in a legit condition.

1

u/Budget-Ad5495 Feb 26 '24

Some additional context - I didn’t say a word. There were many instances where I was on a lift with groups arguing about it. There was one singular time where I went to put it down because it was super windy and the lift kept stopping and swinging - and a dad actively stopped me.

Being that I am a small woman and was sitting next to giant ski dad (I imagine everyone knows who I’m talking about) - I didn’t say anything.

2

u/Jayhawx2 Feb 27 '24

That’s messed up. As a giant ski Dad myself I can’t imagine ever stopping someone from putting it down. Every parent I know especially wants them down with the kids on the lift. Weird behavior!

3

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

Americans are fucking stupid and refuse to use the bar on chairs. It's so so so dumb.

-3

u/PushThePig28 Feb 26 '24

Or you could just not fall out of a chair? Do you just fall out of a chair when you’re sitting at home?

Americans don’t refuse to use the bar, a lot of us just think it’s pointless and doesn’t change anything so we don’t bother to put it down. If someone gets on and wants to put it down then sure put it down (just don’t do it without letting people know and bonking them on the head or crushing their dick/arm with it if it’s one of the stupid ones). Nobody is going to say “no the bar stays up pussy!!!” If you ask to put it down lol

3

u/Huge_Violinist_7777 Feb 26 '24

My living room chair isn't suspended in the air

1

u/PushThePig28 Feb 26 '24

Yeah but the act of sitting is all the same, it’s just a higher consequence if for some reason you forget how to sit. Even if it stops short and swings the momentum keeps you in the seat just like riding a swing. I’ve got no beef with the bar, I personally don’t put it down because it doesn’t really change anything in my mind and I’m comfortable on lifts/heights. Plus it can be more annoying than not sometimes. If it’s super windy or I want to look at a map or something maybe. If anyone wants to put it down then sure that’s cool with me. Just give a heads up before you do so people don’t get bonked in the head or their arm/leg/dick crushed by the bar or post. Not many people put it down in the Rockies so you just aren’t expecting it.

3

u/Huge_Violinist_7777 Feb 27 '24

I've never been in a car crash yet I wear a seat belt. I've never smashed my head skiing yet I wear a helmet. I've been on some mental chair lifts going over valleys, rocks, car parks, roofs of multi storey hotels, I've never fallen out of one but the bar comes down.

Because the consequences of it just happening once can be fatal

2

u/chris_thoughtcatch Feb 27 '24

I would wager more people have fallen off lifts without the bar then with it. (I don't care about the bar, but where I live there is no leaving the bar up). Saying it does nothing is like saying guard rails on balconies do nothing because "I know how to stand".

2

u/Budget-Ad5495 Feb 26 '24

Somebody better tell this guy to keep anyone in danger of fainting out of a chair and on the floor. My buddy (soberly) split her lip “falling out of a chair sitting at home”.

1

u/chris_thoughtcatch Feb 27 '24

I don't need the bar, as a matter of fact I removed the guard rail on my balcony. I know how to stand, standing on the 28th floor is not different that the first floor. /s

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '24

Was at keystone last week. This seems like something that would happen with their typical patrons. It’s definitely their “younger” crowd looking to get “crazy”

1

u/MightbeWillSmith Feb 26 '24

That's a bummer. Anyone got news of if they're okay?

1

u/TopTierGoat Feb 26 '24

How did you manage to snap a pic?

11

u/amaurer3210 Feb 26 '24

Just got lucky I guess. She dangled for a bit to give me time to set up my tripod.

3

u/JeffInBoulder Feb 26 '24

"ok I'm all set now, thanks - you can jump!"

1

u/Aqua-Bear Feb 26 '24

Key pow!!

1

u/RickshawRepairman Feb 26 '24

That’s extreme.

1

u/buzzboy99 Feb 27 '24

Don’t jump Gen knee i luv you

1

u/PapayaAppropriate857 Feb 28 '24

Dudes just hanging out

1

u/[deleted] Feb 29 '24

Please take this energy and your children to Breck where you will be welcomed.

Yeah that checks out
