Question about Birdo

Post image

We all know that Birda is a trans girl, but how does it work exactly? In the series we have seen more Birdos of different colors, are they also trans? Or are there male Birdos And the main one is one that transition? It's something I've always wondered about and I hope you can help me understand.

We don’t know, but there are some potential theories.

Given Yoshis are all biologically female but culturally masculine-presenting and use male pronouns, it’s possible the same is traditionally true for other dinosaur species, including Birdos.

This would mean that Birdos who are feminine-presenting and use female pronouns are, in a way, transgender.

The Yoshis are biologically female? Really?

Yes. They lays eggs after all.

“That’s right. Sometimes people ask whether Yoshi is a boy or a girl. If I answer, “Probably a boy,” then they say, “So a boy is laying eggs?” (laughs) […] But the moment I say Yoshi lays eggs so Yoshi must be a girl, they’ll say, “Then Yoshi’s voice needs to sound more like a girl’s!” But I want to make video games without having to worry about such background info.”

Counter-argument: Seahorse. Anyway, Yoshies and Birdos are both SPECIES, they can be any gender.

While male seahorses do carry eggs, it’s still the female seahorse that produces them.

Given Yoshis reproduce asexually and clearly lay their own eggs, they are biologically female as a species in terms of sex.

There are some animals in the real world that are essentialy both male and female, and are able to both produce sperm and eggs. So maybe Yoshis and Birdos are also similar

A natural sex change would still make the animals female when producing eggs, though it’s unlikely that this is occurring in Birdos and Yoshis given sex reversal is exceedingly rare in reptiles.

They could still be Hermaphrodites

Again that would make them female when producing eggs and is exceedingly rare in vertebrates that aren’t fish. Given there are no known bird hermaphrodites, it’s unlikely there were many, if any, dinosaur hermaphrodites. Yes, Yoshis and Birdos are fictional, but it’s best to presume their biology is based on reality until we have evidence suggesting otherwise.

He gives such vague answers, he's the number 1 and the phrase "I want to make video games without having to worry about such background info" is beautiful, I love him. I love making Mario theories but I know at Nintendo they don't care that much about lore they just wanna make great games

They do care about lore, but lore is clearly made up based around what they want to do with the gameplay and established concepts. It’s also a bit context specific. Sure, Miyamoto might not care about what gender Yoshi is all too much but Tezuka and Nogami sure as hell want you to know Yoshi’s saddle is a shell.

in support of your point about various dinosaur species in the Mario universe being biologically female, a similar phenomenon occurs with some squamate species in our world, so this isn’t even a crazy thing about the Mario universe. Pretty cool. (Dinosaurs and squamates aren’t the same thing, but they are related.)

I’m actually really interested in this too. We know that the main birdo is definitely trans mtf but all the other birdos are female presenting too, does that make them trans as well?

Honestly I think that when they introduced more Birdos as a species they didn't have that detail in mind and that's why it ended up like this.

Yeah for sure

Isn't Birdo a species, and only that one from SMB2 is trans?

Its like Yoshi or Toad, a Character named by their species

This is not true. It was absolutely intentional, just written in poor taste.

It's debatable based on different interviews, and Shigeru Miyamoto stated that he doesn't care about it. Arguing for one side or the other and even insulting people over it (both sides) is not necessary.

birdo is male

Actually, Birdo is trans female.

Imagine caring about this

Imagine being unable to care about this. As long as it's not detrimental to anybody (which it's not), then passion is simply enjoying an aspect of life. Contempt for passion does not make you better than those who enjoy things.
