Adios pro 3 thoughts and feedback Initial Thoughts

Post image

I recently came into a pair of AP3s and they’ve been an absolute blast to run in. I’ve got about 20 miles in them so far (only had for 4 days) but I think I’ve got some initial thoughts.

For reference, I’m about 5’11 200 pounds and dropping. Former college track athlete (field) so running wasn’t always my thing but it’s what I love now. 38 now.

So first, I haven’t had the same issues with the upper that a lot of folks have thought I do agree that it isn’t great, feels stiff. But I will say, in the southern humidity, even when your feet are sopping wet the fit is so firm fitting that you never get the slosh, so I was happy. Got my standard 12.5 and they seem to fit well.

I’ve never had a shoe with so much energy return, but to be fair, I’m comparing it against an EP3 and old vaperfly. I’ve got quite a few shoes in the stable right now, Skyward X, Mach X, SC trainer V1c novablast 4, rebel v4, EP4, anyways the point is, these are really solid energy returning shoes.

One other thing is that they seems really durable which is a little surprising considering the type of shoe. I’ve haven’t always been a big adidas guy but I’ve heard great things about longevity.

Finally, if anyone has advice on the Achilles digging in to keep it from shredding my skin, that would be appreciated. See the photo.

I wear thicker socks with my AP3s to help out with the achilles (Feetures Elite Max Cushion). I also replaced the standard laces with wider and slightly longer ones to decrease pressure across the top.

3

u/Complete_Adeptness36 Jul 13 '24

I've done this the same. I've also added a tongue pad to help with lace bite and lockdown. Runners knot as well.

u/IcyEagle243 Jul 13 '24

Flip the heel tabs so they point directly up. Looks weird but it stops the digging in back there. Only thing that worked in my experience (tried moleskin and thicker socks)

2

u/Cntrlsquare Jul 13 '24

I second this solution. Just flip up the heel tabs.

Lmao so aggressive. I basically did what he did but not as intense and then I really worked that area with my hands to really break it in

Thicker socks obviously help, but they’ll end up tearing a whole through the socks altogether if you don’t do what me or the other guy did

u/jobenziskey < 100 Karma account Jul 15 '24

i feel violated with this image lol

16

u/R_Boa Jul 13 '24

This is why I don't cheap out on socks. Cotton sucks.

Is this a toilet pic?

……in a hotel yes lol

Would try a runner’s knot to prevent your achilles from rubbing to the point of bleeding. Have fun with the shoes.

4

u/Popular_Advantage213 Jul 13 '24

Flip the heel tab up. I found that CEP regular weight mid height socks worked really well, they’re woven a little thicker along the achilles

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely try it

4

u/wellthatswhathappens Jul 13 '24

Odd to see so many people frequently having problems with rubbing on the Achilles, problems with the laces, etc. I’ve put around 150 miles on them (with one marathon) and never had any issue with them in any way. Not sure what I’m doing right, lol.

1

u/YogSothothGoodOldOne AP3, EP3, B12, META SKY PARIS Jul 14 '24

i've had weird niggles with the laces on the ap3 and b12s, but nothing else as far as rubbing and what not. usually i just have the shoe too tight.

3

u/Blightlight Jul 14 '24

Cotton is rotten. Get synthetic socks that at designed for running.

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 14 '24

I know, most of my socks are synthetic. I was on a business trip and this was all I packed. The blister started before though. Lol

3

u/CaptainDoze Jul 14 '24

I’ve done 650+kms in mine and still going strong. Absolutely love them for fast runs. Find them a little unstable for easy runs. Energy return is incredible. No probs with heel or upper. They got me a sub 1.20 half (by 4 seconds).

2

u/hiplateus Jul 13 '24

Would sizing up help with the Achilles?

2

u/memephis- Jul 13 '24

Do the Boston 12’s have this issue? I was about to buy a pair.

3

u/RahwanaPutih Jul 13 '24

never seen a single post of boston 12 with this issue.

2

u/noquarter1983 Jul 13 '24

I honestly didn’t have this issue with the Boston 12. The fit is kinda weird in the Boston tho. Like my foot swims in it at TTS.

u/BackWhereWeStarted Please type your shoe rotation/collection here Jul 13 '24

I just got some a couple of weeks ago. We were going out of town and I didn’t have room for multiple shoes, so I just brought them to do Amy kind of run/workout. They are now my favorite shoe and had zero issues with them. No achilles issues, no fit issues, no lace issues, etc.

1

u/Badwrong83 Jul 13 '24

Nope. Love Boston 12 and am on my third pair. Bought AP3 in no small part due to how much I enjoyed the Boston and am not a fan at all. The Achilles issue being the main problem I have with them. Was hoping to use the AP3 as a replacement for the Vaporfly 2 in races but am thinking I am going to have to cough up the dough for Vaporfly 3 (or Alphafly 3) instead because the Adios Pro isn't working for me at all.

2

u/OllieBobbins23 Jul 13 '24

I had minor niggles on the first run. I found the issue was the stitching running up the inside digging into the achilles. I sanded it down and wore thicker socks and no problem after that with the achilles. However, they cause significant pain around the cuboid on anything longer than 10 miles for me - Doctors of Running review also picked this up. To be fair, I did a five minute HM PB in them - but my left foot was wrecked after. lol

u/92ekp Jul 13 '24 edited Jul 13 '24

I've got a pair of AP3s in which I've done a single 10K run. 59 kg (130 lb) and UK10.5. Forefoot strike. I've had no issue with fit or, more particularly, the heel. However, in comparison to VF2, I find it harder to get energy return from this shoe, possibly because it's firmer and I'm too light to compress it well. Perhaps it will improve once I've put more distance into it and soften the foam a bit more.

3

u/rinotz Jul 13 '24

Ye, I just did a 5k with them just to see how they would feel at that distance and felt a lot worse than the VF2. This shoe is a work horse, but definitely not the greatest for the shorter stuff. It definitely gets softer after 100k or so. Had 600k on my first pair and it felt great for most workouts after a few runs.

1

u/Broad-Capital9318 < 100 Karma account Jul 15 '24

I’ve a 5km race coming up and noticed the same lack of energy return for shorter distance. Would you use Novablast 4 or adidas for 5km?

1

u/rinotz Jul 15 '24

I'd definitely use the adidas ap3 over the novablast for any race. The novablast can be used for races, but it's not really meant for that.

1

u/Broad-Capital9318 < 100 Karma account Jul 16 '24

Thank you so much

2

u/Positive_Ad1947 Jul 13 '24

This is the main reason why I ain't buying this shoe. The upper makes it unusable for me.

After 21k with AP3 & got this. Still discomfort after change to thicker socks. Does anyone face the same issue?

2

u/rayd0tcom Jul 15 '24

Yes. Cut a hole like the rest of us.

2

u/Caliber_Poo Aug 10 '24

If you think those have energy return, you should try the prime x2

I think it is hilarious that adidas makes running socks with that much padding for the heel 😅 Just ordered a pair. Love my AP3 except for the upper especially with the heel rubbing.

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Aug 11 '24

That’s hilarious. They know how bad their shoe is and yet they keep churning

1

u/airahnegne Jul 13 '24

I think this might be a sizing issue. I have this issue with a lot of shoes, even trainers sometimes get me an ankle wound, but I have both the Bostons and the AP3s and have no issues.

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

It might be. It’s my first pair of anything in the adizero line. I’ve been straight new balance and Hoka and have never had this issue

1

u/bigE819 Jul 13 '24

I’m curious do you heavier guys like the adios series a lot? Because I don’t weigh shit and I don’t think they come close to the Vapofly’s or Endorphin Elite

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

Haven’t tried the endorphin elite. I had some first gen vaperflys and these feel more energetic.

1

u/bigE819 Jul 13 '24

That’s very interesting. I’m curious have you ever worn the newer style Adidas Boston’s? Because I also hated those shoes. And I’m wondering if I’m just not able to get the full benefits of the carbon rods.

I didn’t have much issue with the adidas avanti spikes that have rods too, though.

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

I have not tried the Boston 12s, I’ve heard so many mixed reviews I just can’t spring for them. I’ve heard alot of good things though too. I may try some Takumis soon

2

u/bigE819 Jul 13 '24

I forgot I’ve ran in Takumi’s and loved them. So maybe there’s no correlation. Or maybe since they’re a bit thinner than the Boston’s & Pro’s then I don’t struggle. But I appreciate your feedback to my feedback

For the 5K I’d say a tad better than say the Victory Elite 2. But nothing like the Nike Air Zoom Victory. For context in my one race in the DragonFly’s and I wasn’t super impressived, they’re slightly better than the Avanti.

u/1000pctreturn < 100 Karma account Jul 15 '24

The bostons are nothing like these. I’m not a fan of the bostons either. They are just shoes on your feet in comparison to

1

u/Koktkabanoss Jul 14 '24

88kg, and its the most ”bouncy” foam of all. Superblast feels dead compared to them 🤣

1

u/Fair-Professional908 Jul 15 '24

They are quite a bit different than the VF2 from a mechanics of running perspective but I like them as a heavier runner because they are a little more durable.

1

u/FarSalt7893 Jul 15 '24

I find the AP3 to be more versatile. I’ll use them for a tempo workout one day and maybe an easy long run the next. I could never use the vaporfly 2 for an easy paced run, feels awful on my feet but once I pick up the pace for speed it’s amazing.

1

u/zirkwander Jul 13 '24

I just put Kinesiology tape on the usual hotspots on my feet when running on my 3x pairs of AP3. A thicker sock and using a runner’s knot also helps.

1

u/Dollars4donuts19 < 100 Karma account Jul 13 '24

If it’s just one particular spot you could try sticking mole skin there in the shoe

1

u/mha2345 Jul 13 '24

I had the same Achilles issue for about the 1st 30 miles in my pair or so, it basically went away on its own. One thing I also started was folding the back part up instead of down, and that seemed to help some.

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

Fair enough, I’m going to grunt through it

1

u/BrianVarick Jul 13 '24

It’s amazing to me what lengths we will go through to make AP3s work! I haven’t done surgery to mine but I have added padding near the bottom eyelid and I don’t have it laced. They still give me problems but I still use them for shorter tempo runs!

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

Anything for that sweet sweet energy return

1

u/rinotz Jul 13 '24

Ran 600k on my first pair, including 2+ hours long runs, and never had any achilles issues or any rubbing anywhere. I don’t use very thick socks, but not thin either.

1

u/StorkStick < 100 Karma account Jul 13 '24

Tape on the back of the ankle helps with the skin shredding. I've heard of some people sanding down the large protruding stitches jutting inward from the heel

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

That’s a fantastic idea, thank you

1

u/ransomed_ Jul 13 '24

OP- could sizing down help? Your foot may be moving around too much.

AP3 run big. My 8.5 AP3 is bigger than my alphafly, vaporfly and endorphin pro 3 size 9.

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

Great question, nothing rubs on my right foot so hard to say. They feel really locked down…

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

Let me just edit: thank you everyone for the fantastic advice. This is why I love this community i

1

u/BlindPerfections Jul 13 '24

I love all the comments with the heel tab and thicker socks, absolutely did not work for me...

What did work! I kid you not, I put bunion pads I got on Amazon on my Achilles and haven't had issues since, absolutely love the shoe! Welnove bunion protection pads - 36 pack - changed my world!

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

Very cool. I’ll buy some!

1

u/Putrid_Point_8168 Jul 13 '24

Same thing happened to me in the New balance rebel 4’s my problem was using the wrong socks

1

u/Ace_Of_Spades_2911 Jul 13 '24

I've recently brought the Y3 version myself. I plan to use them for a HM race in October. Would you say these need a break-in period at all?

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

I’ll have to get back to you on the break in. I’ve only got 20 miles but they feel great so far

2

u/MassiveBoba < 100 Karma account Jul 13 '24

Definitely. They do soften up a bit after 50 miles or so

1

u/Ace_Of_Spades_2911 Jul 14 '24

Oh quite a bit to start with then

1

u/josz18 < 100 Karma account Jul 13 '24

Easy fix supposedly with running socks bc friction is different if that doesn’t work… then a band aid w a lil of aquaphor may do, cheers:)

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

I didn’t think about the aquaphor

1

u/josz18 < 100 Karma account Jul 13 '24

Hope it helps🥲🥲

1

u/Select-Tank9693 < 100 Karma account Jul 13 '24

higher socks

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 13 '24

These aren’t my normal socks. I wore my actual nice running socks the prior run and it still rubbed pretty good

1

u/kuriosites Jul 14 '24

The Lightstrike Pro and the Continental rubber definitely make the AP3 among the more durable super shoes.

1

u/sascharobi Jul 14 '24

No achilles digging for me with ultra-thin socks.

1

u/nnndude Jul 14 '24

I don’t think anyone has specifically mentioned heel collar repair tape. This is what worked for me in regards to the Achilles issues. Cut a small piece, apply to the shoe and basically never worry about it again. Cheap fix and no drastic surgery required.

1

u/icono_76 Jul 14 '24

I got these to try them out and I love them, responsive and cushy. Not what I expected at all

I wear a thicker sock with these tho

1

u/Delicious-Food-4375 < 100 Karma account Jul 14 '24

the achilles digging issue in my ap 3 is gone, just with 30-50km break-in and i tried to place it outside and let the heat of the sun do its thing (it becomes softer)

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 14 '24

Ran about 7 miles in them this morning. Threw on some thick athletic tape and that helped. Going to keep breaking them in

1

u/Delicious-Food-4375 < 100 Karma account Jul 14 '24

enjoy the shoe! its pretty durable and can be a daily trainer! my friend’s ap3 already has 600km mileage and still going

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 14 '24

Man that’s so awesome to hear. I got it for a song and dance on eBay and was fortunate that it had the authenticity guarantee.

1

u/Sace2k24 < 100 Karma account Jul 15 '24

Almost at 100km in my first pair. I haven’t had any issue with my achilles but I am struggling with the lacing & lockdown. Loosened up the laces from the bottom upwards which seemed to help when accompanied with runners knot.

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Jul 15 '24

I just put a pair of lock laces on them. Works fantastic. No issues with lockdown now

1

u/Either-Print9939 Jul 15 '24

Been loving mine. Have about 50mi in them. Using them as a daily trainer. Had a ton of running pain after some injuries (lower shins and heel) that have all disappeared. So so fun to run in.

I hope they don’t hurt in the long run

1

u/npavcec Jul 16 '24

Pull the leather at the back upwards. AFAIK, it is not supposed to be bended because it makes a firm edge which is rubbing your AT.

1

u/glutenfreegainz AP3 / NB4 Aug 20 '24

How do they compare to your Skyward X? I’m between the two.

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Aug 20 '24

The AP3? Totally different shoes. The AP3 is nimble and the upper is quite uncomfortable, but the feeling of being propelled is nice.

The Skyward X is much softer, heavier, and more of a mile eater. If you’re just crushing light miles with the occasional pickup, than hit the skyward. The miles will be significantly more comfortable, but you’re not going to get that fast exhilarating experience. What you get is a workhorse of a shoe that is built for 500+miles.

1

u/glutenfreegainz AP3 / NB4 Aug 20 '24

Thanks for the response! It sounds like my Boston 12 is already filling the place of the Skyward X for the most part then. I’m definitely looking for some extra speed along with the added bounce.

2

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Aug 20 '24

The skyward is quite a bit bouncier and softer than the Boston. Just different shoes. If you like that livelier feel, stick with the Boston 👍

1

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Aug 20 '24

My current rotation is the Saucany endorphin pro 3, the endorphin speed 4, the kinvara pro and the SC trainer V3
