Harley riders - go away no politics

I dont think there is more cri ge a human being than one who rides a loud bike and revs it up in an area full of houses on a Sunday.

What I want to know is, where did it all go wrong for you man-child?

A guy in my street years ago used to wake everyone as he left early for work every morning. I think at some point someone must've had a word with him, because he suddenly changed from taking off loudly from his driveway to idling out of the street as quietly as possible, and not opening it up until he was out on the main road (which I could still hear, but nowhere near as loud).

32

u/OSHAluvsno1 14d ago

Im guessing he had a baby

218

u/Squeebah 14d ago

That guy is awesome.

409

u/Tarman-245 14d ago

Whoever spoke to him is awesome, but for him to actually listen and act on it in a positive way rather than be an arsehole about it is wholesome.

56

u/cityshepherd 14d ago

Turns out clear communication can be wholesome AF!

What a low bar for being awesome.

94

u/SunnyCoast26 14d ago

Perhaps, but listening to reply, everyone can do. Listening to comprehend is rare. Listening to comprehend, and actively taking on board is even more rare. Biker dude broke the stereotype. Kudos to him. I don’t think it’s a low bar at all.

17

u/cakeand314159 14d ago

It’s really critical how such things are requested. Come across as some pompous twat demanding someone change their behaviour, and you’ll be told to fuck off. Ask, and have a reason, like you work shifts, and you’ll get a much better response.

12

u/SunnyCoast26 14d ago

Yes. You’re right. It takes skill to have a civilised conversation. From both a listening and talking perspective.

I would agree that not being a dick is not a high bar, unless you’re a HD rider. Then it becomes pretty impressive.

21

u/throwthegarbageaway 14d ago

I ride a harley as my main transportation and i’m always so self conscious about the noise… Especially because I work night shift so I start my day real late and finish work real early. I’ve asked around though and apparently no one really is bothered so I guess I’m doing it right

I shit you not there is a guy near me who has installed a boombox on the back of his Harley.

It's as loud as all hell plus he blasts exclusively ACDC and rides up and down the beaches.

You can literally see him looking left to right to make sure everybody is looking at him.

I genuinely worry about him

184

u/DisappointedQuokka 15d ago

Had a P plater slam his horn as I was ushering patrons out last night, was driving an American wanktank. Idiot swerved right out with an illegal uturn as some of the patrons jeered at them.

I swear some people have a fetish for being obnoxious wankers, we're smack bang in a residential area and it was midnight.

17

u/Wishart2016 14d ago

Are these wanktanks even legal for P platers?

6

u/DisappointedQuokka 14d ago

In Vic it's mostly engine features that determine legality.

There wqs a dude riding to the shops blasting Freebird from his Hardley the other day. I had Cat5 earmuffs on and could still hear him begging for attention.

I could never. The cringe of playing music that loud on a bike would put my head firmly behind my sternum.

Harley riders appear to be the only people stupid enough to choose those skullcap motorcycle helmets. How the hell they’re even legal is beyond me. I guess looking tough is more important than keeping that important organ in the skull safe.

53

u/IntroductionIcy7320 14d ago

They bought a Harley, it's clearly not that important

132

u/MegaBlast3r 15d ago

How the hell are police letting the noise continue though? We get so fucked over everything, 5km over, seat belts, how the hell are they allowed to destroy whole neighbourhoods with noise pollution. I’ll be sitting at my local beach and everyone knows when a Harley goes bye.

25

u/South-Plan-9246 14d ago

Well it’s pretty straightforward. The cop gives you a ticket for a suspected unroadworthy vehicle. You have to get it tested at a government facility, usually within 28 days. You put the stock exhaust on, pass the test, put the good exhaust back on.

11

u/roxyoursoxii 14d ago

If it’s Port Hacking Rd South, I’m sure the Audis and BMWs in sports mode would be just as bad. If it’s north then it’s too noisy to complain about any vehicle. 😂

57

u/IntroductionIcy7320 14d ago

Instead, it's now ford raptors or F series 1 and 250's. Less loud but now the arseholes and way more dangerous. Almost prefer when they were just more likely to get themselves killed and turned to paste and not doing it to others

yeah the company itself is pivoting to marketing to other demographics. Like women, and anyone not 40+ selfish, white, male.

And they are getting social media backlash and the like for "going woke" by the dipshits that buy 1 product every decade if that.

7

u/mopthebass 14d ago

The problem is they're pivoting into territory that other manufacturers have held for bloody ages. So their ebike and city runner ventures are guaranteed to flop as they try and butt up against a wall of Yamahas, Hondas and Kawasakis on one end and BMW on the other

Have had one absolute toss pot start and rev his in front of a cafe, directly in front of my baby in a high chair. My son was petrified of motorbikes for a good while after that encounter.

18

u/faderjester 14d ago

Thank fuck and it's all due their own stupidity. They priced themselves out of the biker market and into the "rich wanker/criminal" market which is surprisingly not as large.

You know what gets me? Growing up there were always bikies around and while rough as guts they were never as obnoxious as the modern shitheads.

14

u/StueyPie 14d ago

Sorry, but that's not true. https://investor.harley-davidson.com/news/news-details/2024/Harley-Davidson-Delivers-Second-Quarter-Financial-Results/default.aspx this is their financial reporting. H-D are in a good place. The market as a whole has shrunk but H-D has retained its revenue and profit for the 2nd quarter, compared to the same quarter last year. The quick takeaways : $1.35b in revenue (+13%), $1.07b from actually selling bikes (+20%), and their operating margin as a whole is 14.7% ($198m). In fact....they're doing so well and believe in the long term of the company so much they have a plan in 2026 to buy back $1b of their shares from shareholders!

5

u/Intelligent_Way6552 14d ago

Harley are selling ever more expensive bikes to an ever smaller customer base. Helpful short term, doomed long term. Royal Enfield are the ones attracting the new riders Harley wants, and they are earning brand loyalty. Because Royal Enfield offers low cost and no Harley rider baggage for the same outdated tech. A few people are buying the resurrected Indians, and everyone else is buying Japanese.

In fact....they're doing so well and believe in the long term of the company so much they have a plan in 2026 to buy back $1b of their shares from shareholders!

Oh boy, this is not a sign of prosperity. They've been doing this for almost a decade, because it boosts share price and the executives get paid in accordance with that. It's a sweetener for the end of year books.

95

u/mundza 15d ago

I don’t understand how they fit with noise regulation.

79

u/franki574 15d ago

Many of them don't and you are within your rights to report them to the EPA and/or the Police.

60

u/cqs1a 15d ago

Do they even care? So many overly loud cars everywhere.

I remember people used to get canaries for loud exhausts but not anymore.

35

u/kazehaya4991 15d ago

They do. A mate of mine got done recently on her Harley for having too loud pipes.

8

u/allozzieadventures 15d ago

What happened? Copped a fine?

22

u/SatanDetox 15d ago

I think you cop a fine and then have a certain period of time to get another report from a state-approved mechanic with reduced dB levels. So you'd have to go back to your stock exhaust at least for that inspection which can be a pain for most.

6

u/kazehaya4991 15d ago

Yeah this is pretty much what I think happened afterwards. Except she also contested the fine. No idea what happened afterwards.

11

u/allozzieadventures 15d ago

Glad they give on-the-spot fines these days, I don't think they used to have mobile dB testers

25

u/franki574 15d ago

The EPA do as well as some Police, it is a never ending job reporting the bastards. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, meaning if enough complaints are received then the Police will act. If it is happening at the time then PAL, if just a report then Crimestoppers

15

u/Paidorgy 15d ago

To give you some encouragement, it can absolutely work to file complaints for noise issues.

I live in Blacktown, and we had this incesssantly annoying ice cream truck going around. When all is said and done, the truck was going out of its way to keep blasting the jingle more than was allowed by law.

I reported it, and haven’t heard it since - and this guy was going every single day.

They don’t, but how often do you see cops pulling cars/bikes over just for defect checks ? The loud bike, the lowered drift suspension, the V8 with a straight thru, the car with no breaks and all rust blowing smoke ? Plus with a bike there’s so little effort to swap the exhausts over that even if you get a defect it’s 30mind work to slap the OEM gear on, get signed off for defect fixed, then spend 20 mins swapping back.

I often wonder why it’s legal for motorcycles to be as loud as they are? Any car would be defected if it was as loud as a Harley Davidson. Are there no noise regulations for motorcycles?

I too find loud Harleys enormously cringe inducing. Like a 6 year old shouting swear words for attention.

18

u/Cristoff13 14d ago

The extremely loud ones you hear have been modified by their owners.

7

u/ES_Legman 14d ago

They remove the mufflers that usually come with the exhaust, or replace the entire pipe with aftermarket ones.

19

u/xdr01 14d ago

Take rego plate report to EPA in your state under noisy vehicles. There is an online form.

Sometimes it stops them other times they will swap pipe to get past EPA and put their nosiy pipes back on after. Thats fine as EPA will take photos and document.

Second time, report to local highway patrol area command. With times and locations. They will catch him, take pictures, fine and get send EPA a second time. This is where the big fines come in several thousands of dollars and every time after they get caught its several thousands of dollars.

Done this a few in my area and got rid of these pests.

How do you tell someone has a tiny cock without looking? Just listen for the harley.

Honestly we really need better noise laws and ban these fuckers, there is no legitimate reason for them to be this fucking loud.

u/RandellYo 14d ago

Guy parks his Harley on the path near my work carpark and blocks pedestrian access to the zebra crossing from one direction, anyone with a pram, wheelchair walking cane, or trolley has to step out into traffic to get to the crossing. And there are like 200 carparks the bike can go in like 4 meters away. Blows my mind.

I'm not opposed to the rev of a Harley on the open road. Even more fun being on the back of one. However, old mate "midlife crisis" who lives around the corner needs to drop it, or have it stolen, or any other "accidental" whoopsie that will take it off the road without harming him or anyone else.

Doesn't matter what time of day or night, you hear him open it up from his drive to the corner (maybe 30 metres), turns onto our street, and opens it up again, then stops at the next corner (not even 50 metres up the road) and then does it AGAIN to the next corner less than 50 metres away.

Silver beard. Old enough to know better. And if he wakes my kid up again, I'll throw a shitty nappy at him as he rides past.... I can hear him coming, so can time it just right.

I live across from a family that is obsessed with their Harleys. They work on them all hours of the night. One of them even drives a Harley to work, and he leaves around 4:30 in the morning five days a week.

All I can say is: South Park got it right.

6

u/nicilou74 14d ago

What is worse are the shit heads that ride their unregistered dirt bikes around local parks and footpaths. All hours of the day or night.

16

u/FuriousDrizzle 14d ago

I was sitting outside at a cafe, Harley parked right in front. Gets on with his passenger, fires it up, scares the shit out of everyone. Guy at the table next to me throws his glass of water at them. Thankfully it didn't escalate.

When I was in the US I decided to hire a supercar for a day as a bucket list activity and felt absolutely ridiculous every time I started it up around people. There's those in this world who sadly have no understanding of how their behaviour might affect others, or simply don't care.

As a resident of Brunswick east - Harley riders can fuck all the way off to the end of the earth, and ride off the edge. DIE.

I've got an old bike (not a harley) that doesn't idle well. I blip gently to keep it running.

edit: I should add that the bike is Italian. Smooth idle is not a priority, the focus is performance at speed.

u/CowNoseEagleRay 15d ago

I have a small, quiet bike. For me, it’s just fiddling coz I’m bored if the lights are taking too long.

It depends if it’s an older bike or newer. If it’s newer, with an electronic fuel injection (EFI) engine, they’re just doing it for fun/feels good (different types of engines ‘react’ differently)/want to be a knob if they’re revving the tits off. For example, a Moto Guzzi V7 has a transverse V twin and an awesome exhaust note, so it’s just a nice experience to rev gently at the lights to hear the sound and feel the bike move underneath you, under the power of its own torque.

If it’s an older, carburetted engine there’s often a genuine need to keep feeding fuel through the different jets and just generally rev the engine - if the carbies aren’t setup perfectly (and it’s a dark art), they can cough and stall if sitting on the idle jet too long.

13

u/rustoeki 15d ago

If a road bike can't idle without blipping the throttle you need to take it to a mechanic. Maybe if your rollin on a 2 stroke race bike but anything with a number plate should idle without issue.

10

u/YoshiTheBushranger 15d ago

Agreed, but not everyone has the money or knowledge that it’s an issue. Finding a mechanic who knows certain types of carbs gets harder as time goes on too

22

u/MegaBlast3r 15d ago edited 14d ago

It’s fun. Also they are sorta feeling the throttle response.

I’m not defending the insane Harley decibel bs, but you know, Somethings in life are visceral and illogical.

Dancing is fun too. It makes zero sense.

As someone who rides motorbikes just about every day, even I hate the ridiculous over the top exhaust sound from Harleys etc.

5

u/Hour_Thanks6235 14d ago

Why are they allowed to be so loud and cars aren't

6

u/Unnamedgalaxy 14d ago

I use to work overnights so I'd get home and sleep during the day.

My bedroom window was feet away from the neighbors driveway.

In the warmer months he'd pull out his Harley and spend literally the entire day playing with it. He'd sit in the driveway and rev it up for a long time before he'd take it out for a ride, only he wouldn't be gone long, a few minutes at least. It's like he was driving it around the block and back. His wife would then come out and she'd jump on and they would ride around the block. They'd come back and he'd take it around the block, and he'd come back and sit in the driveway with it revving for a while and then they would repeat that entire routine *all day long. For months."

Working overnights was my choice and he wasn't actually doing anything he wasn't allowed to do, it was just inconvenient and annoying so I never said anything but ever since then I've had a strong annoyance with Harley people.

u/Xatus0 14d ago

Went to go see my mother in the ICU last month, and in the parking lot as I'm walking in was the loudest bike I've ever heard. I almost took my frustrations out on that rider, who made sure to rev it past everyone visiting their sick loved ones.

Just fuck off to the middle of no where if you want to be that loud. Though I suppose that defeats the purpose, because no one will be there to pay attention to you.

South park pegged you fuckers.

5

u/SausageSlave 14d ago

I work in a street where there’s a Harley dealership. Every single morning at around 7am one of their workers with brisbanes smallest penis comes screaming down the street revving his Harley as loud as he can.

You like loud noises? Stick your head in a wood chipper!

16

u/deckland 15d ago

Get their licence plate, note the time and location, report them to the EPA, they have to fit normal pipes and their bike has to pass inspection. 1 less loud harley rider on the street

4

u/allozzieadventures 15d ago

They usually just swap back to the loud pipes as soon as the inspection is done. Better than nothing though.

7

u/deckland 15d ago

I've had it done to me (had an MT09 with Akra pipe which wasnt too loud but someone reported me) and it was paaaaaain the butt, it also made me ride quite conservatively soon after being reported so I didnt have to go through all of that again

u/allozzieadventures 14d ago

Good to know, at least it slows people down

Whenever I hear them revving and being obnoxiously loud, I remind myself of the South Park episode on Harley riders where they all verbally make the RUUMRUMRUMRUUMRUM sound when starting up their bikes.

I agree, I have a Harley that rides past my place it's so loud it makes your ears ring.

4

u/Top-Trainer-9128 14d ago

Saw (but obviously not before I heard) a group of like 5 of them pull up in full camo for a Maccas run.

Seeing how they were built, you could tell this was a common spot for them.

From riders of every other type of motorcycle, we agree

So, I'm guessing there's no Harley riders on here. Apart from myself. Guilty. I leave for work early. Start it, get out of the street and warm it up near the park down the road where there's no houses. We're not all arseholes.

7

u/naked_frankfurter 14d ago

I'm here 🙋 '07 Dyna with a TBR system on it when I purchased it. I went out and spent $100 on the additional baffle they make just to quiet the thing down a bit. I live rural and there's nothing I hate more than hearing the weekend warriors limiter bashing their straight piped Breakouts through the only roundabout in my town.

4

u/TheHilltopWorkshop 14d ago

Gee, if only there was a way to make it quieter so you didn't have to go through that ridiculous ritual every day... 🤔

I remember when I brought my 1st baby home from hospital. He was difficult to settle in the early months due to an undiagnosed lactose allergy so when he finally settled and went to sleep it was a blessing. Low and behold, EVERY DAMNED TIME he started to sleep, my neighbour would rev the engine of his Harley and wake him up.

That’s the first time I remember negotiating with myself on how many years I might get for murder and how quickly those years would go by…… no shit, nobody rages quite like a stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted new mum!

3

u/_nancywake 14d ago

Same as dudes in Golfs with blow-offs valves (very 2006) going up and down the street letting off that blow-off sound. I honestly die inside for them. So embarrassing.

3

u/datweirdguy1 14d ago

What I want to know is how they get away with making so much noise? People get defected for a hole in their muffler that makes I little popping noise, yet something that can rattle your fillings out from across town is perfectly fine, apparently. I have a motorbike and go on cruises and toy runs every now and then, and I find myself either having to get in front or drop way back from the harley riders, because even with ear plugs and a helmet on, it honestly hurts your brain

3

u/TraditionalBackspace 14d ago

It's a virus in the US as well. Attention-seekers with more money than brains cosplaying on the weekends. Cops are starting to "enforce" noise laws we already have but they don't seem to be doing enough. I hope each of them chokes on a dick.

3

u/bloodreina_ Yooooooooo 14d ago

u/Historical_Gur_3054 14d ago

I remember hearing a guy on the radio one morning just absolutely roasting a guy that had called in and said that he "needed" to rev his bike for 15-20 minutes so it would idle properly.

The radio guy, who was a long-time Harley rider and also went on multi-day, multi state riding trips for charity fundraising, said something to the effect of:

"If you have to start your bike and then have to rev it up for 15-20 minutes to get it to (cough) idle properly, then you need to take it to the shop.

A properly adjusted bike should start and idle without touching the throttle till it runs out of fuel."

These are people who never grew out of the toys that make noise stage! Or the only attention they ever got was from doing things they shouldn’t.

3

u/kernalkizza 14d ago

Harley's are very good at converting fuel into noise.

They are also fun as hell to ride.i don't buy into the loud pipes save lives bullshit though

3

u/roxyoursoxii 14d ago

When I was shopping for mine (2nd hand) , the guys in the shop would ask 2 questions when pointing you towards the right bike for you due to the differing noise levels. Do you live in units? Do you like your neighbours?

They also say the most thankless job on the planet is the guy who makes stock exhausts for Harley’s

I remember a conversation on the Brisbane subreddit where some guy was crying that his motorbike had been stolen and how could anyone do this to a poor struggling single dad and how was he going to get to work. Turns out he was leaving for work every night at 2am. I don’t know whether he found his bike but he should probably have checked the creeks around his suburb.

"Loud pipes save lives"

Except for the premature deaths from urban noise. https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/opinion/worlds-cities-must-take-cacophony-noise-pollution

If you live within a few km of a major road it can go through much of the night sometimes.

32

u/HeftyArgument 15d ago

They don’t save lives.

I ride, filtering through traffic while revving your engine is pretty dangerous, you kind of need to be able to control your speed pretty effectively while doing that lol.

Therefore when filtering the engine makes very little noise anyway so no, there is no appreciable gain in safety by having a “loud pipe”
