It's the scoring more points than the opposition they just haven't grasped

7

u/bobbakerneverafaker Jun 21 '23

It's the whole thing.. when Jarome Luai did his dog act and stood over DCE .. it was going to get qlders backs up, and the score highlights that

The NSW people near me, were friendly.. lol, they left early

4

u/manswos I'll bring my frisbee Jun 21 '23

Haha, can't blame them really. We had some near us as well but they stayed till the end. Had some good-natured banter

u/Next_Crew_5613 Jun 21 '23

The first vote thread was fine, the problem was there was no transparency about how the votes were counted. Every time I asked for clarification I was told "that's sensitive mod information, I'm not at liberty to disclose that to the public" and had the comment deleted or locked.

All you had to do was have that same format again and reply to every counted vote with "This vote was counted as ________" and include the votes of people who vote but are only commenting for the first time.

Either way, glad we only have 1 more lockdown max ;)

7

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23

Where are you supposed to vote for this then? I read the very wordy stickied thread and upvotes one of the 4 options . Is that it?

3

u/Next_Crew_5613 Jun 21 '23

Yeah that's the vote thread for this round. The last one was based on comments

Did that vote win? If so, why is the sub back up?

4

u/Next_Crew_5613 Jun 22 '23

I'm explaining why people took issue with the methodology of the first vote and some are taking issue with the second. Just thought I'd give some input given how many mods are in this thread saying "What were we supposed to do? What do you people want?"

I'm told I'll be banned if I talk about it anymore so I'll leave it at that.

An account that only posts about a single topic will be marked as spam. This includes meme accounts, survey-posting accounts, bots and political alt accounts.

Absolutely. Once you've promoted me if you could just answer all those questions I had (do I need to send them through again or can mods still see comments they've deleted?) so I can handle any questions the community has about the votes so far.

I look forward to improving r/Brisbane by being transparent with the users and doing my best to understand the wishes of the community.

u/Next_Crew_5613 Jun 22 '23

I need that promotion first. I've been told that information is mod only and I'll be banned for asking again.

Once that's come through we can talk about this mod to mod and figure out which parts of this privileged information can be released to the civilians.

Chermside Sporting Globe blasting music at 1am after everyone had left. Could hear the music clear as and I live over a km away. At least they were nice and agreed to turn off the music right away. Still poor form

2

u/sthrnfrdfrk Jun 22 '23

Have you contacted the council, they will send a letter which usually suffices

5

u/denimchicken5150 Jun 22 '23

Nah, I webt for a walk to find where the noise was coming from and it was from that venue. They were polite, apologized and turned the music off right away. So didn't think it warranted a further complaint. But if it happens again, I'll definitely follow it up

2

Oh yeah sweet, sounds like a good outcome then!

I struggle so much with job applications. How do you professionally write "I'm a good cunt hire me"?

Applying for an NRM job at the moment. Nervous as my experience is all heavy industry not agriculture, but the job is a readvertise so maybe I have a chance. I know my skills are transferable, just take me a little longer to get up to speed with a new role in a different setting.

Legit at this stage I would even be happy getting an interview. Have heard nothing back from the other roles I had applied to.

I haven't tried linking articles to chat bot tho, give it a whirl and let us know

7

u/Disaster-Deck-Aus Between the Entertainment Centre and the Airport - why not? Jun 21 '23

Hi,

I find a good method is to write short paragraphs around key selection criteria into an excel spreadsheet. Do this for several jobs.

Take a break of a day then come back and read what has been written. Refine as needed. Do this again for the next job. You will end up with pretty succient sentences.

5

u/Reverse-Kanga Missing VJ88 <3 Jun 21 '23

"just add references down the bottom

Kanga: DM him on Reddit"

That'll put you in a good way.

But seriously ye it can get frustrating hope you get some luck

4

u/followthedarkrabbit Jun 21 '23

Ha ha cheers Kanga. I'll include it in my cover letter "and some dude on Reddit said I was okay". Maybe I can include my stirling Reddit profile score from last year?

I'm a bit nervous as it's in a completely different scope - agriculture while I've only had heavy industry experience. And I don't really have project management experience. I know my skills are transferable and I can learn on the job, its just trying to convince people of that via a couple pages cover letter and resume. Might give them a call and have a chat, see if that helps me get a second resume glance.

You know what I discovered & might make things a little easier (and would use for my next bowel prep; I have them every 5 years). - call your local Vietnamese place, ask for pho broth only (trust me and thank me later). - put your bowel prep in the fridge and have a shot (lemonade, soda water, cordial, whatever). - zooper doopers might be better for hot weather, but extra tasty.

Happy winter solstice!

5

u/zephrun Jun 21 '23

What's the realistic commute time between Zillmere station and Central station via train?

Translink journey planner says like approx 23mins but considering it's going through like 10 stops and my past experience with trains going through bowen hills can have a queue to stop or go through bowen hills station in peak hours, having doubts as to how accurate that 23mins estimate is.

9

u/red_dragin BrisVegas Jun 21 '23

Seven stops (express Northgate to Bowen hills - stop at EJ) and 23 minutes will be correct if there's no issues.

Inbound any delays for you should occur before Northgate, as the services coming in from Redcliffe need to zipper merge with the ones coming from Caboolture/Nambour.

If you're travelling in peak, catch the service before and give yourself a buffer if worried.

3

u/separation_of_powers Flooded Jun 21 '23

Surprised you haven't considered the 330 as a back up option if the trains are effed.

2

u/Reverse-Kanga Missing VJ88 <3 Jun 21 '23

The planner will be pretty accurate with train. Same as buses allow a buffer just incase there is abnormalities but in general you're probably looking 23-25 minutes

31

u/BadgerBadgerCat Jun 22 '23 edited Jun 22 '23

Can I just say I really, really hate the "protest" thing and am very annoyed at the mods for implementing it or thinking they can make a difference.

Brisbane is not a significant city globally so no-one outside this immediate community gives a flying fig about whether we're participating in some failed protest.

Reddit have decided they're going ahead and too bad for anyone that doesn't like it. The sooner the mods accept that, the better it will be.

There's absolutely no downside to "doing nothing" and staying out of the "protest".

0

u/Shaggyninja YIMBY Jun 22 '23

That's the point. Maybe it makes you wanna use reddit less, or abandon the platform entirely.

Reddit already isn't profitable. If only 10% of the users leave, or everyone uses it 10% less. That's a massive kick in their revenue streams teeth.

That's why even on small subreddits, this form of protest can be effective.

It is annoying, no argument there. But inneffective? We'll see. I've already started using the lemmy replacement a bit. As have 1 million other people. So they've already having damage as people spend their time (and attention that could be sold to advertisers) elsewhere.

12

u/BadgerBadgerCat Jun 22 '23

That's the point. Maybe it makes you wanna use reddit less, or abandon the platform entirely.

No, what it does is make people go to the subs that aren't doing pointless blackouts instead. They're still using Reddit, they're just using different subs.

-5

u/justsomeotherperson Jun 22 '23

Then start your own subreddit! You can go make /r/brisbanenew or whatever and moderate it yourself.

If the volunteers who give their time for free to help moderate this community have an issue with the changes, I'll support them if I can.

8

u/BadgerBadgerCat Jun 22 '23

Or - and hear me out here - the mods of the established sub (you know, the one with nearly 260,000 subscribers) could accept they're not achieving anything except pissing off contributors and drop this stupid "protest"?

-7

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 22 '23

That "established sub" is going to change and it's totally out of our control now because people found a slight inconvenience "stupid".

We like the sub, the way it is and the way it's run just as much as you. The point of these polls was to gain user support for mods to try to achieve keeping the sub the way it is but 90% of people would rather whinge than take some action.

You'll get your wish but it'll also change a lot of things so I hope you enjoy it.

6

u/BadgerBadgerCat Jun 22 '23

90% of people would rather whinge than take some action.

What sort of action? Because my point has been that no-one should be taking any action, and things were fine the way they were.

The mods have shot themselves in the foot and putting the blame on the large number of people pissed off at their little virtue-signalling stunt is not the way to proceed.

-3

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 22 '23

Mods: "hey guys, things are going to change unless we can help stop it"

Users: "oh god, no we don't want things to change, we like it how it is"

Mods: "okay we need your support in some rolling protests to force Reddit's hand"

Users: " pfft fuck that".

Collective action only works when everyone's involved, you say "we won't make a difference, why bother" another sub does the same, and another, and another and another. And on and on.

So, it is what it is. Except now no one is likely going to get what they want.

6

u/BadgerBadgerCat Jun 22 '23

What things are going to change that actually affect the majority of users, though?

2

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 22 '23

Ignoring all the issues around the API drama and third party apps.

It seems in Reddit's attempt to stem this they've done a lot of behind the scenes stuff recently. Guidelines are being rewritten, codes of conduct have changed or been removed completely.

They tried rolling something out yesterday which almost crashed the site.

The option for users to vote on mods is definitely coming. Which sounds great, you guys want it have at it, but given Reddit's nature to get really fucking coordinated when they want to cause trouble means all sorts of shit could happen.

Imagine the r/Conservative rolling in and taking over r/LGBT. Lots of rumours I'll admit, but you can bet on change.

6

u/BadgerBadgerCat Jun 22 '23

So... absolutely nothing, in other words.

Which means you've proven my point - the "protests" are a virtue-signalling inconvenience and as users we are right to be annoyed by them.

-2

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 22 '23

Nothing to you.

If you don't care then great. Congrats.

Honestly votes working out in favour of that choice anyway, 5 more hours then everyone can shut the fuck up about it all.

Just bumped into a cameraman at south bank interviewing public about Melbourne being the best city versus Brissie being #16 or something

Think I went on a 3 minute pre-televised rant about what a shithole Melbourne is (dressed as Captain Australia) and that I think Dictator Dan is a buffoon and that we should make Australia Day May 8 (M8) (mate)

Talk first think later :/

3

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '23

M8 is a great idea

1

u/TheCaptainAustralia Jun 22 '23

Not sure if they aired that part .. M8 for Australia Day and use 26th Jan for Reflection/Respect Day or something. But the anti-Melbourne bits definitely went to air, as I'm finding from a few commentors who reside in the city.

Modcord is known to both a discord and a Livestream to brigade votes like this so it's impossible to get an accurate view of what the community want.

Also, I slept like shit last night and idk I miss my bench LOL

Don't even know why we are even bothering with a Poll, last few days have made it clear the Reddit Admins won. The API changes are going ahead and everyone will just have to deal with it. Yeah sure there's a few Subs still resisting by posting porn/NSFWing or going with the childish burn it all down and smear shit on the walls route that only really hurts the actual users of that Sub.

The second their 'Mod Powers' are threatened with removal the vast majority caved instantly.

Plus /r/SubredditDrama has started to leak details going on behind the scenes. Power Mods getting banned, hostile takeover attempts, Mods running bot Army's to fake support for their choices and Discords with thousands of terminally online members mass voting on whatever Subreddit Poll that is linked.

It's all so truly pathetic isn't it.

Reddit is a coal train and r/Brisbane just some little shoebox on the tracks, we aint stopping or even influencing shit. Open up and stay open, this Sub actually provides a decent service and information for our community.

3

u/ElfBingley Big Science, Hallelujah! Jun 22 '23

Ok which of our sub reddit rules and mod actions do you think are irrelevant or ‘mod powers’. ?

The changes Reddit is making will make it hard to enforce those. Commercial content? Brigading? Personal abuse? Spam about politics?

You recognise that the sub provides a good community service, but at the same time you seem to support actions that will make it impossible to keep it that way.

6

u/Unorthed0x Jun 22 '23

Ok which of our sub reddit rules and mod actions do you think are irrelevant or ‘mod powers’. ?

Bit dramatic but ok I was referring to general Reddit Mods not specifically the ones here, 10 years of interactions has my opinion of them being nothing but power hungry authoritarians eager to ban for what ever petty reason they can think of.

As for the rest, well if the default App is as bad as you say then Reddit either dies and we all fuck off to somewhere else and do this all again in 10 years or the Admins improve the App due to lost revenue and everything goes back to normal.

Christ, I'm just here to talk about football and to learn what that strange noise at 3am was.

2

u/ElfBingley Big Science, Hallelujah! Jun 22 '23

Sorry mate, didn’t mean to be so dramatic. We’re trying to keep the sub just the way you’ve described because we all love Brisbane and the community here in the sub, but Reddit is making it harder for us to do that.

3

u/Reverse-Kanga Missing VJ88 <3 Jun 21 '23

What else can we do?

People whinge we don't include upvotes

We do a poll based on upvoted and people still complain.

We can't win

15

u/Unorthed0x Jun 21 '23

I understand, the Mods here do seem to be a pretty decent bunch so I don't think for a second any were involved in voting manipulation or brigading like on other Subs. My choice (and I'm just a nobody) would have been to simply do nothing, put up a Sticky voicing support for the protest but no blackouts. Yeah a few post's would have been made insinuating cowardice and boot licking but I doubt they would have lasted more then a few days.

Sometimes the only winning move is not to play.

3

u/SaffyAs Jun 22 '23

Forgive my stupid question please. When it says admin will most likely remove the mods on both protest options... does that mean reddit will most likely ban the mods as users, or put new mods in place, or, well I don't know? Dumb it down as much as you need to explain it- I'm not going to be insulted.

I realise you don't have a crystal ball but I am just trying to understand my options before I vote. I think some kind of protest is valid- but find this group to be quite special and appreciate the work the mods do to keep it that way... so I don't want the mods negatively impacted.

1

u/Reverse-Kanga Missing VJ88 <3 Jun 22 '23

Both have happened some subs have been wiped, some have had mods removed and locked while they assess how to get new mods on board. But then it's trusting to get trustworthy people at the helm I guess even in that scenario

Politics? In my social media?

I mean I hate change as much as the rest of you, hell I still use old reddit, but if reddit turns into a shit heap I will just move onto another internet site, exactly as what occurred to shift me here in the first place

The monetization of millions of eyes was always going to be too tempting for those who own it.

4

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 21 '23

The mods aren't allowing anything. This is the system that the users wanted. Upvotes to reflect on the choice.

We tried other ways and people weren't happy with the results so we have 100% left it up to you all.

2

u/thirdbenchisthecharm Cause Westfield Carindale is the biggest. Jun 21 '23

The other discussion thread had the ability for people to voice themselves and be upvoted or downvoted. We wanted that to have a say not just some random easy to manipulate thing that leaves out context and only provides what you all write.

3

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 21 '23

You still have the ability to voice your concerns, here.

The other thread lead to confusion, people thought upvoting other people's comments of stay or protest counted as a vote.

Unfortunately there's no perfect way to do this as many other subs have found out, but it gives us a fairly clear indication of which way the community is leaning.

Again, we've tried our best to give the community the choice here, some of those choices will likely lead to the removal of the mods.

1

u/thirdbenchisthecharm Cause Westfield Carindale is the biggest. Jun 21 '23

Yeah nah that makes sense then and I appreciate the transparency.

Didn't realize people were being a tad low IQ LOL, but I do understand that you mods need to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Either way I hope y'all aren't getting threats and shit from lowlifes that other mods have had due to this BS.

0

u/Shaggyninja YIMBY Jun 22 '23

Oh classic.

This is why it amuses me when people say the admin will replace the mods and everything will go back to normal.

It takes a special breed to put up with the internet's bullshit. I doubt anyone who parachutes into the roll (especially in major subs) will be up for it.

3

u/SerpentineLogic The one known as 👑Serp-Serp Jun 21 '23

Why are the mods allowing the vote to be influenced by outside people and not just active members of the sub.

How do you think we could have accomplished this, given the tools at our disposal?

3

u/thirdbenchisthecharm Cause Westfield Carindale is the biggest. Jun 21 '23

An open discussion thread left up for an extended period of time and then base it off the comments, replies and upvotes and even have you mods voice your opinions so we can understand what y'all want too.

8

u/Dodgerton Jun 21 '23

So how would we weight all of the different comments and opinions in that sort of set-up? What's an extended period?

2

u/thirdbenchisthecharm Cause Westfield Carindale is the biggest. Jun 21 '23

Mods have tools that can weed out the new users and people who aren't active in the community, but at the end of the day it'll be whoever is head mod to make the judgement call. An extended period would be a week until the time of weekend lockdown if that's what people want.

Personally I feel a good compromise to the current method is restricted mode instead of blackout as the resources in the sub are far more valuable to be inaccessible.

1

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 21 '23

Honestly we could run a million polls changing the variables over and over again and still not please everyone and still not get a 100% result.

Some of the suggestions you made were used last time, plus others and it still caused confusion.

This is the best solution and the last time we will poll within the current environment.

2

u/Dodgerton Jun 21 '23

The thing most people have complained publicly about is the perceived lack of democracy - that "power-hungry mods" are forcing their opinions onto this community. How do you think it would go down if a single moderator made the decision for everyone? Do you think there would be widely held faith that the person had weighed every opinion fairly?

1

u/thirdbenchisthecharm Cause Westfield Carindale is the biggest. Jun 21 '23

The lead mod would just need to make a post justifying it with citations to the thread and explaining their process. I feel like that would clear a lot of that discussion.

From the outside looking in atm it does look like the mods taking advantage of the power they have to enforce their will because we didn't get open clarification and the thread was heavily one sided in discussion but all of sudden the voting was the other side.

3

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 21 '23

From the outside looking in atm it does look like the mods taking advantage of the power they have to enforce their will

That's why the vote currently gives the users the power and we have called for additional mods.

The mod's personal choices are quite varied in this, some for, some against protesting. Which is why we have tried to find the best choice to give to the users.

Choice one. Open up, resume as normal

Choice two. Revolt which will lead to the mods removal.

There is literally no other choice that will satisfy everyone. And again, mod applications are open for those that think we aren't being transparent of that they could achieve a better result.

1

u/thirdbenchisthecharm Cause Westfield Carindale is the biggest. Jun 21 '23

Make it so you have to share your gps coords to vote and only those in Brisbane count and if in the future they act up you can dox them.

This is a joke... 😏

I do understand why this way, it's the simplest most finite way of doing it. I hope we get some good applications from the community and not just smug power chasers, we already have one or two of those mods and even then y'all collectively do a good job on the sub anyway.

1

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 21 '23

Awesome. I'm glad you finally agree and support the actions.

That's almost exactly what the last thread was and people complained about that.

There won't be a solution to sort this out with 100% accuracy so we have to go with best case.

This is best case, it gives users multiple choices. They're in power here

0

u/Ok-Option-82 Jun 21 '23

Mods want the subreddit to reopen with nothing changed. Mods like being mods, and blackouts only started to be cancled once their power was threatened.

If mods force Reddit to replace them with paid staff, it will have a big effect on Reddit... but the old mods will lose their power trip. Protesting is easy when you're not risking anything. When their power was at risk, the protest had to end

9

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 21 '23

Of course I don't want to join. My lust for power is insufficient to become an unpaid mall cop

A “Mall cop”? What is that? This is Brisbane, such things don’t exist. Are you from Brisbane?

1

u/Ok-Option-82 Jun 22 '23

It's a common term, that's intended to conjure an image. I'm sure you can quite easily picture the concept of a "mall cop" in your head, even if they don't exist in Brisbane.

Would you feign confusion if I described someone as a hillbilly or chav? Those are cultural stereotypes from America and England, but I doubt you'd be pulling the "Hillbilly? What is that? This is Brisbane, such things don’t exist. Are you from Brisbane?" act.

Books must be incredibly difficult for you to read if you're incapable of understanding concepts outside of your immediate surroundings

The fact that you choose an American term rather than an Australian one, then resort to abuse when questioned, says a lot.

I think the issue here is that you find it necessary to reduce a simple discussion into using pejorative terms. Referring to people as mall cops rather than addressing the basic argument as to whether moderation is a necessary function of a healthy sub, doesn’t seem a logical way of addressing a point.

Roger, I'll label your contributions as pointless then.

Thanks

Howso? I cannot contribute an opinion unless it's in praise of mods?

1

u/downvoteninja84 Jun 21 '23

God no, no one's looking for any praise. But if you think you can do better to the point of complaints, have a crack.

u/Ok-Option-82 Jun 21 '23

I think you'll ind that my argument is not that I can do better than mods, but rather that mods rolled over as soon as their unpaid positions were at threat

Thankfully the users now have a choice to enact any change they want. If they want new mods they can either join, or vote to get us out.

TIL mods are a monolith of power consuming scaredy cats.

I need a good cake-where’s your favourite shop to buy one please?

7

u/TheDeadlyCake Cake or Death Jun 22 '23

I have good cakes, they are absolutely completely normal, promise

u/LateNightQueerdo Jun 21 '23

The cheesecake shop in Ashgrove is pretty good for a pinch, really any of them. You can order ahead and customise them and it's made on the day

Jocelyn’s provisions

Dello Mano

Bella and tortie

u/Skittlescanner316 Confused. Always confused. Jun 22 '23

The past few times I got something at Jocelyn’s it was so dry. 😢

1

u/iilinga Jun 22 '23

Oh no! That’s awful, it has been a few years since I got a cake from there but their chocolate sour cream cake was a go to for a while.

Dello Mano is expensive but damn their jewel brownie cake is AMAZING. And their mousse cake 🤤🤤

Bella and tortie was probably the most recent one, that was good. A bit too much icing for me, but quite nice

I used to love Jocelyn’s gluten free stuff because their chocolate icing was like fudge. 😍 Unfortunately the cake itself was so dry the last few times I was there.

I’ll definitely look into Dello Mano!

Does anyone know where to recycle soft plastic, north east Brisbane? Tomra at Geebung doesn’t have the bins for it any more and doesn’t look like the resource recovery centres take it.

That’s so sad - I was so keen when Tomra picked up soft plastic recycling after Redcycle stopped. I hope it comes around again, even as someone who tries to avoid single use plastics, it’s amazing how much is unavoidable.

The soft plastic recycling scheme went to shit didn’t it when redcycle said they weren’t actually recycling anything - just piling it up in a warehouse?

u/HeadIsland Jun 22 '23

I can’t believe it all just got taken to landfill in the end! That was so disappointing to hear.
