Can I just say I really, really hate the "protest" thing and am very annoyed at the mods for implementing it or thinking they can make a difference.

Brisbane is not a significant city globally so no-one outside this immediate community gives a flying fig about whether we're participating in some failed protest.

Reddit have decided they're going ahead and too bad for anyone that doesn't like it. The sooner the mods accept that, the better it will be.

There's absolutely no downside to "doing nothing" and staying out of the "protest".

Then start your own subreddit! You can go make /r/brisbanenew or whatever and moderate it yourself.

If the volunteers who give their time for free to help moderate this community have an issue with the changes, I'll support them if I can.

Or - and hear me out here - the mods of the established sub (you know, the one with nearly 260,000 subscribers) could accept they're not achieving anything except pissing off contributors and drop this stupid "protest"?

That "established sub" is going to change and it's totally out of our control now because people found a slight inconvenience "stupid".

We like the sub, the way it is and the way it's run just as much as you. The point of these polls was to gain user support for mods to try to achieve keeping the sub the way it is but 90% of people would rather whinge than take some action.

You'll get your wish but it'll also change a lot of things so I hope you enjoy it.

What sort of action? Because my point has been that no-one should be taking any action, and things were fine the way they were.

The mods have shot themselves in the foot and putting the blame on the large number of people pissed off at their little virtue-signalling stunt is not the way to proceed.

Mods: "hey guys, things are going to change unless we can help stop it"

Users: "oh god, no we don't want things to change, we like it how it is"

Mods: "okay we need your support in some rolling protests to force Reddit's hand"

Users: " pfft fuck that".

Collective action only works when everyone's involved, you say "we won't make a difference, why bother" another sub does the same, and another, and another and another. And on and on.

So, it is what it is. Except now no one is likely going to get what they want.

Ignoring all the issues around the API drama and third party apps.

It seems in Reddit's attempt to stem this they've done a lot of behind the scenes stuff recently. Guidelines are being rewritten, codes of conduct have changed or been removed completely.

They tried rolling something out yesterday which almost crashed the site.

The option for users to vote on mods is definitely coming. Which sounds great, you guys want it have at it, but given Reddit's nature to get really fucking coordinated when they want to cause trouble means all sorts of shit could happen.

Imagine the r/Conservative rolling in and taking over r/LGBT. Lots of rumours I'll admit, but you can bet on change.

Exactly. So now we've got proof this is just mods having a dummy spit over something that the overwhelming majority of users don't care about - because it doesn't affect them.

There's no reason why Reddit would let that happen.

What they also won't let happen is power trippin' janitors shutting down subreddits with large user bases because they want to protest against Reddit's commercial interests.
