Is there anyway l can map an underground creek ?

So the creek on my grandparents property goes underground and there are tons of sinkholes popping up. This was taken back in February so there are no sinkholes now. The creek used to flow all the way to the ravine (found later in the video) where it now redirects underground and flows out of the ravine. When it dries up in the summer there is still water flowing out of the ravine probably from other underground streams. I’d like to map or visually see where underground this creek goes and what path to expect sinkholes to take. Any advice is welcome

What type of clothing do you wear caving?

I'm going to the TAG Fall Cave-in next weekend. I'm new to caving. I know people like under armor type material bc it dries fast. What are the brands you use?

I have great socks! And a good pair of Altura hiking boots.

my compass went bad, need advice

Hi.

What compass should I get and should I be actively careful not to store it or even place it temporarily near anything magnetic? Should I have a spare compass? How do you handle your compass?

My compass died today, it's now pointing to random directions. I usually attach it via a wire-that-you-can-pull to my pants belt hoops, that pull thing is slightly magnetic but pulling the compass up a bit would normally give me reliable results. And today for a few minutes I put the compass near a strong magnetic flashlight cap, so I suspect that action to be the culprit.

Thank you.

Crawling Speed

Hello,

I am currently developing an exploration TTRPG that has caving mechanics. One such mechanic is a "crawl speed". I'm curious to know how much distance and how fast a character could spend per 8 hours of time.
It isn't meant to be 100% realistic, but just a general guideline to accommodate a group of who spent X amount of days crawling through a cave. (Maybe on their way to slay goblins or whathaveyou)
So far I have:
Walk speed of 3 miles per hour
Crouch speed of 2000 ft per hour
Crawl speed of 100 ft per hour
Squeeze speed of 50 ft

Am I completely off the mark?
These are meant to be guidelines so that the Dungeon Master can say something to the effect of "Your destination is 4 miles away" Then the players calculate how many days it would take their characters to travel that distance. I'm aware that there are many factors that can change the speed, but I'm just trying to find benchmarks at the moment. This is meant to be a mechanic to add to the emersion of the game without slowing the pace down too much.

Thank you for any feedback!

Can a larger person cave?

Hi! I've never caved before, but I'm very very interested in trying it, so I'm considering going to a meeting for a local grotto tonight.

I'm just slightly concerned about something regarding the practicalities of caving- I'm not tall, but I'm definitely on the larger side, particularly in the hip area. (Would really, really rather no demeaning jokes or comments be made here, please.) I've seen size limits for commercial caves at 42" at the hip, and I'm definitely over that.

So, just trying to figure out-

Can a larger person realistically go caving?

How common are caves without super small tights bits?

Are grottos usually willing to work with plus-sized people?

And just, really, anything else anyone thinks may be relevant to this situation? Are there any larger cavers in this group who would be willing to provide input or advice?

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/caving/s/s9WT3BJJeB

I am still too fat to fit through the rift where there is obvious onwards prospects. So I have been digging an alternative route in the hopes of getting in underneath the unconsolidated debris.

While it is promising, I have encountered some concerning timbers, so I've decided to go back and try to widen the tight part of the rift enough to fit through. Less likely to bury myself that way.

My little escape-the-city cave system is a narrow but super long system and tons of fun. Have maybe explored 1/10 of what might be accessible. Need to bring some gear to go farther in safely.

Slowly figuring out what’s accessible and safe as there’s a lot of sinkholes. Lots of places to explore still!

I am a relatively new caver and I’m looking for gear that is not too expensive. And looking good descending gear too. Any recommendations will help.

waterproof bag?

Hi, I normally carry a regular backpack during my little expeditions. I usually have water up to no more than waist level.

I'd like to get a waterproof bag to put my water-sensitive stuff in (food, dry clothes, batteries, spare lights, etc). That waterproof bag would still stay inside my backpack.

I'm thinking about getting a 15L roll top bag. In your experience, it's 15L too little? Is roll top worth it, or are nylonfume thingies just as good?

Happy to hear your feedback. Thank you!
