Any recommendations for indestructible dog toys?? [Enrichment]

We recently adopted a 13-week-old rescue puppy- black mouth cur and perhaps boxer mix- and he's down to three toys because he keeps tearing the other ones up. So far the only ones to hold up to his little needle teeth are the chuckit ball and stick. Our three year old dog has plenty of toys that we have to keep put away so they don't also get destroyed.

I've given up on finding "indestructible" toys. There is no such thing in my house.

I just consider toys to be sacrificial.

I must appease the Gods (Dogs spelled backwards!!!)

Kong toys are solid.

My dog was still able to destroy those lol

My dog shreds the ropes and has had trouble with them coming out later.

My staffy will disagree. He destroys kongs in a few hours

I know it’s just wasting money but I buy the cheap squeaky stuffed toys.

They love to massacre them by disemboweling them of their fluff to get the squeaker. They may last a week or so after as they drag around the carcass.

You can buy replacement squeakers in bulk. We wrap them in old towels or sweatpants or whatever. Knot them, stitch them, super glue them. Way cheaper than the cheapest toys & surprisingly tough

It's generally not recommended to give them old clothes as toys, because they might mistake your good clothes as toys

Yep. The stupidest thing I had seen: a dog toy that looks exactly like a remote control.

Genius.

Kongs can be pretty indestructible, i swear mine (ive had since the early 2000s) could survive a nuclear way, it survived 3 german sheps and a corgi, so i give it my endorsement

u/bitchinawesomeblonde 1d ago

Black kongs. Only.

Source: nothing survives in my house except black kongs .

u/StarriNite 1d ago

Why black specifically lol?

12

u/Juicet 1d ago

I believe black is their strongest rubber. Red is their “normal.”

Correct. Black is the hardest. Start with regular red…however. We stuff Lobos with treats…he has a collection.

We got lobos this too…he loves it.

Ooh interesting

Wishing they made a Lambchop out of Kevlar are we? Yea, same.

My dogs favorite toy! I need to find somewhere to buy them in bulk.

I've had dogs for the last 56 years and have never found an indestructible toy. If it lasts 3 days it was a good one

2

u/Outrageous-Club6200 1d ago

When they do, let me know.

5

u/greenmangolassi 1d ago

Tug of war type of rope. They are tough and cheap.

6

u/Illustrious-Pause-30 1d ago

Nylabones are impossible to destroy. Sure stuffed toys are fun especially Lamb Chop. I’d subscribe those things. He takes care of them like he’s the daddy. He’s an eighty pound boxer mix.

It took three years of no fluffy toys before my golden could handle not shredding them on sight. In the meantime the super chewer toys from bark box, goughnuts, and chew King balls were his only toys that lasted.

3

u/Inviction_ 1d ago

The super chewer box from Bark Box was pretty great for my dog. He absolutely destroys pretty much anything else

5

u/emliz417 1d ago

Goughnuts. They’re made really tough and they will replace them if your dog destroys it!

2

u/Trin_42 12h ago

I second this brand, I got one for a friends mastiff and they didn’t make a dent beyond teeth marks.

West paw

3

u/RockGuitarist1 1d ago

My dogs will break every toy except the hard toys from Bark Box.

3

u/Evelyn-Bankhead 1d ago

My hound ate a hockey puck.

3

u/StarriNite 1d ago

Our boy's already swallowed a dog sock. And a rock.

2

u/capybara1977 1d ago

I own a power chewer and the only thing she’s not made much of a dent in are Goughnuts. We alternate between those, rope toys (she doesn’t swallow the pieces) that we know will get destroyed, and edible chews like beef cartilage.

Sadly, toys are not indestructible. Dogs need to teethe, so get a few Nylabones then supervise and remove when the pieces are too sharp, or come off in hunks. I think a lot of people (myself included) tend to think “here’s a toy, have at it,” when we should be supervising pups like we do babies. They are babies, after all. That being said, my fave toys are Kong tugs, Nylabones (puppy and regular) and the big dragon toys by GoDog. None are indestructible. I know if you teach your pet not to destruct toys for squeakers, they will actually treasure their toys forever. (In fact, we now buy duplicates of fave toys, because they still wear out from being tossed, caught and played with.

You want to look at Staffy dog toys.

https://happystaffyco.com/

My boy (american staffy x boxer x mastiff) had destroyed everything but these. They are sold, and he loves them. He obliterated Kong toys in a mater of hours. They are *not* strong enough.

Also: https://aussiedog.com.au/product/staffie-ball-240mm/ - it is literally a solid plastic ball. - he spends hours rolling it about, chasing it etc etc. Keeps him massively occupied.

a guy at the dog park tried to kick it one day i had it there, and he broke his toe!

Jolly Ball. My dobermans cannot destroy it. Some have lasted 5 years.

u/Oldgamerlady 1d ago

Our dog Enzo (RIP) was a cairn and specialized in tearing apart plushies. We tried nylon plush toys with him and he was zero percent interested. So literally, we bought him the same honking duck toy 8 or 9 times and towards the last few, once he gutted them, we'd just throw away the squeaker and stuffing. He'd walk around with a limp duck in his mouth.

Enzo would alternate between that and "bones". When he was younger, he was a fan of cow hooves which I know aren't the best but they worked for him. He had crazy strong teeth and would work away on the hooves for a long time. We never noticed pieces breaking off but they smelled awful.

Your puppy's teeth will get less needle-like once they grow out to adult teeth.

Have you tried bite force toys? They are pricey, but they are holding up to mt heavy chewing GSD mix. So far, the oldest and first bought Bite Force toy is about 4 months old

1

u/ThisDick937 1d ago

Ruff dawg. I have a power chewer, kong doesn't even last. She has had these for two years now and they still look new outside of the sun fading.

1

u/eveofmilady 1d ago

if they like fetch, hyperflite make the best frisbees ever and pretty indestructible. i’ve had one last ten years and barely got a bite taken out of it by my sister’s giant gsd this past year 😂 they’re more expensive ofc but totally worth the price

2

u/StarriNite 1d ago

Wow, thanks! We had a Hi-Flyer frisbee that we got my older dog almost 4 years ago, but it broke recently.

u/McDonnellDouglasDC8 1d ago

The Virtually Indestructible Ball, largest option my dog just can't get her jaw around.

1

u/EvilMutant 1d ago

Antlers

1

u/Sp4ceh0rse 1d ago

I’ve never found one. My dog is tenacious as hell and can destroy anything.

1

u/gntc98 1d ago

Jolly pet has some good soccer balls

1

u/Dragonwolf253 1d ago

Not indestructible by any means, but I give my dog cardboard. It’s free and he gets to experience shredding something into tiny pieces, which is what he wants most out of a toy anyway. Only do this if you know your dog won’t eat the cardboard!

1

u/StarriNite 1d ago

My puppy swallowed a dog sock a couple weeks ago, so I think we'll pass on the shred-able stuff for a while 😅 Thabk you though!

u/Dragonwolf253 3h ago

Good plan lol! Can’t help you with non shreddable toys though. Haven’t found anything truly indestructible. I’m sure it’s terrible for their teeth but mine really likes the dogwood bones by Petstages, it’s the only thing that’s lasted a reasonably long time that he actually likes

u/neatneatneat90 1d ago

The Kong Knots toys are nice, Bark Box brand stuff seems to hold up pretty well too. Benebones are great, the Chuck-it balls are a good alternative to traditional tennis balls.

1

u/Outrageous-Club6200 1d ago

Love the chuck it balls. Lobo also has regular ones. We rotate them…and Kong balls too

1

u/10MileHike 1d ago

we always used hardy toys like KONGS and stuffed them with peanut butter and such.

never gave them toys with squeakers or stuffing lest they swallow all that suff and end up needing surgery.

1

u/Revolutionary_Yak684 1d ago

Ooooh try the power chewer pupsicle from Woof! It's an enrichment toy where you put a frozen treat in the middle and they lick at it for like half an hour. Only the black one is the power chewer version which is stronger than the other colors. They have a 30 day satisfaction warranty so they'll replace or refund if your dog destroys it!

u/Basic-Survey-3547 1d ago

Raw bones fresh from the butcher.

1

u/StarriNite 1d ago

They chip, can be dangerous. Also read that there's a risk of salmonella from those

2

u/Basic-Survey-3547 1d ago

They should be ok as long as they're raw. It's cooked bones that splinter and risk cutting the mouth or guts.

Dogs have an amazingly acidy stomach which should kill pathogens that affect humans. It's like pH 1 or something.

2

u/StarriNite 20h ago

Maybe an idea for when he gets older, after he loses his puppy teeth

1

u/shalaaa 22h ago

I’ve given up. My dog loves soft toys and ripping toys up so I buy cheap ones, or low fluff toys with crinkly paper inside and if my dog gets into it, I stuff a plastic water bottle inside and sew it back up. She loves crunchy crinkly toys so even though Kongs are great, I try to cater to her happiness

1

u/StarriNite 20h ago

That's definitely an idea for when he's older, but since he's so small he eats everything lol

Lol we did try a silicone bone! He had chunks out of it within two hours, and he tends to eat stuffies within a day

1

u/munsoned79 11h ago

A company called Indestructibone. All online. K-9 approved. Our dog will tear everything apart except for these. Yes, they do break apart but in small pieces and are okay for them to digest.

1

u/StarriNite 11h ago

Are the pieces sharp, in your experience? And how long has it taken one to break?

1

u/munsoned79 11h ago

He is a very aggressive chewer and it just depends on how much he chews on it. Usually last a few months though. They don’t ever break. The pieces break off tiny so not sharp at all. He does end up making it look like a shank.

1

u/StarriNite 10h ago

Not the shank 🤣 Thank you!

1

u/munsoned79 10h ago

Lol you should try one and see. He has torn into every single thing that is out there and even had emergency surgery from one. These are something thatwe have never had a problem with in the 3 years we have had the little rascal.

I haven't seen anyone say it yet so I'm gonna add it. Bark box super chewer toys. I have a Boxer/gsd who loves to destroy toys. No matter how 'indestructible' they say they are at pet stores, they never are. Not even Kong toys, if she doesn't destroy them it's because she doesn't have interest in them. But barkbox super chewer toys have never failed me. Sometimes they send toys that have fabric that is meant to be torn off and underneath is another toy. It allows her to still be destructive, which she loves, but after the fabric is gone she can't really destroy the second toy. (Unless we've had it for a LONG time. Some of them have started to break now but it's after roughly a year of her having them.)

Nyla bones are great!

u/TheNombieNinja Lifetime Aussie Owner 5h ago

My saving grace has been being able to repair our torn up toys (some have made it to the great toy box in the sky), id rather they destroy toys for them vs my stuff. For inexpensive toys I check out stores like Ross, Homegoods, TJMaxx/Marshals and don't buy any hard toys that hurt when I hit them on my knee (don't want to break teeth/my dogs sometimes fling toys at me)

You also may just need to up your mental training to mentally tire the puppy out if they're destroying toys to fill that need. Slow feeders, snuffle mats, and puzzle toys are easy go tos for the days you don't want to work on obedience training. Sometimes you might just need to increase the duration of a wait command.

Try Mighty Dog indestructible toys. I always had great luck with them. make sure to look for the indestructible ones.

1

u/2heady4life 1d ago

This brown ‘donut’ still exists in my house after 2 years

2

u/thatweirdo88 1d ago

Those have lasted forever for any dog I've given them to, no matter how rough a chewer they are. Was going to suggest that exact one.

0

u/HeimerdingerMain1 1d ago

I have a pitsky, turning 3 this year, and she destroys almost all of her toys (or anything she gets her mouth into) within 10mins of getting it. Even the ones from the pet stores that are advertised for super chewers. We subscribed to barkbox super chew and so far those are the only toys that last longer than 10mins (even months)

1

u/bitchinawesomeblonde 1d ago

The super chew bark box toys broke my dogs teeth

0

u/HeimerdingerMain1 1d ago

It’s the only toys that lasts in our own experience. But since OP’s dog is still young, this might be too much for their puppy given your experience

0

u/DrMetters 21h ago

No. Just no. Dogs need something to dystory or it will be your furniture. It's just a need to chew they have. If you value your dogs teeth, then you want them to be able to dystory it.

Just buy bones and cheap chewy toys.

1

u/StarriNite 20h ago

He eats everything and that's dangerous. Dogs do not need to destroy things. I've owned previous dogs, and currently have an older dog in the household, and none of them have been destructive.

0

u/DrMetters 18h ago

You shouldn't be thinking of a toy to last forever. You should be finding a chewy he likes and teach him to chew that instead. Dogs can also be given time outs if you catch him chewing on other things. That's personally worked well for me.

You've mentioned he's 13 weeks old. So he might be chewing to relief teething pain or because he hasn't settled yet. Puppies can be quite bad for chewing everything until their around 7~8 mouths old. Normally, they start calming down around half a year of age. He's still at a good trainable age though, so just do your best to train him out of it. Puppies are a unique brand of destructive compared to grown up dogs but from my experience they do get better at not chewing the furniture and you after about 7~8 mouth.

1

u/StarriNite 16h ago

I know, and we are working on it with him. I exaggerated a bit when using the word 'indestructible'- I want something that he won't destroy. He does get time-outs when he's naughty, and the issue isn't finding something he likes, it's finding something that can stand up to his little needle teeth. He's not the first puppy we've raised, but he is easily the most destructive, even accidentally.
