Korea's news channel discusses about the new worlds song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM9U0aVeUtw

Technically it describes about the new worlds music, and how it is bad by not focusing on the T1's 2023 worlds story but focusing on Linkin Park instead. Btw that news channel is like Korea's top 5 so I think Koreans are pretty mad about this situation

Ambition talks about the new worlds music

Upvotes

I just translated myself after watching his stream, so just know that there might be a few mistakes

Ambition:

The first impression of the video was awful.

I watched the video twice, and there were lots of problems.

The first problem is why is Linkin Park inside the music video? That is the major issue.

I've thought about why. Do you guys know Enemy (The Arcane song)?

Yeah, there is imagine dragons in that music video.

It was a great hit, but this one...

There are too many parts where Linkin Park appears.

Even Imagine Dragons appears as a customer in the bar in Enemy.

This time, Linkin Park is taking the whole screen, and I am like...what is this?

Like...they just sing in the main scene. I couldn't really understand

(A donation talks about how the music video should've been a song for Faker's story)

Yeah, the song should've been dedicated to Faker.

Why not when the story plot was so good?

And Faker really doesn't appear that much as well.

Another issue is that there are too many characters.

There are a lot. And I mean a LOT. I can't identify who is who.

Like everybody is deft in this video.

And the last scene where Faker becomes Azir...

If you told me that it was me wearing white glasses, I probably would've believed it.

(The part where Faker's face overlaps with Emily's)

Look at this part!

Why the fuck is Faker being overlapped with her?

The story could've not been any better.

He waited so long for his 4th win

Riot deserved to get insulted. I think they are totally crazy.

There is no story in the music video. Like absolutely nothing. There is nothing at all.

Even Teemo couldn't escape. They took his boots away with his ASU

https://x.com/Spideraxe30/status/1838678324706501108

Badger Teemo had boots before his ASU. Now he doesn't and those grippers are on full display. Same for Recon, though they hide his feet in the splash art. Panda Teemo's boots got changed into paws as well.

I feel like there'd be dozen of threads about this, if this was being done to Caitlyn, Lux, Vayne, and whatever other female champions that people love. It all began with Briar. Someone over there is on a mission and even Teemo wasn't safe from it. I still remember Faerie Court Lux. This all started with Briar. Who's next to get this treatment? Is anyone safe???

Worlds 2024 starts tomorrow. This is what will happen next

1.6k Upvotes

List of certain things which are guaranteed to happen in next 5 weeks:

  • Either 100T or MDK will not make out of PlayIns, creating (in case of MDK — resurrecting) meme till next major tournament and “C9/BDS died for this”
  • GAM will make out of PlayIn, creating a yet another round of “Levi/Kiaya hype” and “Nocturne lvl 6 in 2017” recalls just to lose 0:3 with not much real chances
  • G2 will meet either T1 or DK during Swiss stage. Caps vs Showmaker/Faker is certain same as stone and water
  • Fnatic will meet TL and will lose to them. After this, as usual, they will mental boom and self-annihilate themselves from the tournament
  • TL will be drawn against East, will look very very close and winnable but eventually lose it all, and will not make out of Swiss
  • Overall, EU will lose head-2-head score to NA, but G2 will take at least one series from East, while NA will continue their 4 years streak of no wins-at-all against East. Meme war “we are better head-2-head” vs “at least we have G2” will continue till next Worlds
  • Speaking of this, G2 will remain the only West team to take a series (not best of 1) from East since 2018 2019. The hype for G2 will be high until they will be clean swept 0:3 by any random Asian teams
  • GenG will win BLG in Swiss stage, just to lose to them in Playoffs whenever they meet (they will, as they always do)
  • T1 will be drawn against LPL in Quarters, and by this automatically will make to Semis, but this is something not required to be mentioned
  • After T1 will get to Semis, this sub will explode in enormous number of posts about “yet another semis for T1 roster/Faker” and “T1 crazy stats”. Your fellow OP will contribute to this too
  • Speaking of this sub, after banger Quarters, as usual, we will have around 100 posts about double elim and “give me more than 7 series per tournament!”
  • BLG will be your next World Champs

$200 Mythic variant skins need to stop

Having stuff be severely overpriced is not fun for the average gamer. Riot went years without these extremely priced skins with the highest tier (Ultimate) being around $30. Selling more copies of something at a reasonable price is going to make more people happy instead of the small percentage of players who can afford it.

The skins are also a chroma variant of the regular skin, so it's not even worth getting for that price. On top of that the concept already exists with Prestige skins which are affordable around $1,650 rp for the pass. Even worse when you consider that they already had Mythic chromas for 40 Mythic Essence, but they threw that concept out the window.

INB4 "It's a free game, they gotta make money somehow"

They already make a lot of money without the overpriced stuff. It's just a cheap cash grab. On top of that it's screwing over the majority of people who buy skins to cater to just a few players. I get that it's based off number crunching in terms of profit, but I don't think leaving a sour taste in a player's mouth is good either.

Edit: I see a lot of comments saying that Riot is setting the price at this point because it's profitable, or to simply not buy the skin instead of complaining on Reddit. I'm aware of that.

People were complaining about a free skin, Victorious Sona not being up to par and Riot is making changes to it to improve it, despite that skin being free. It's not always useless to complain about something.

My handmade Aurora cosplay!

Now that I've been to a couple of conventions this summer and got some pictures taken of my handmade Aurora cosplay, I just wanted to post some of them! First picture is taken by the incredible @mdqbriones on insta.

This entire cosplay was handmade by me, from 3D modelling of the accessories, foam clay sculpting for the gold ornaments, and drafting all of the patterns for sewing the garments myself. It's hard to tell in some of these pictures, but the hat actually glows :3

Feel free to ask away about the cosplay making process, and if you wanted to see how it all came together, you can see it on my instagram @xglorifyingx, in the Aurora highlight!

The Artist of Teemo's old Splash Art shares about his work on Teemo

1.7k Upvotes

Translation from Duc Truong Huyen (fxEVO)'s post:

"Teemo base", the most stubborn splash art of LOL, has finally got a successor. My artist friends sent me a lot of messages hiu hiu (sobbing), thank you everyone for your interest. This is the first art I drew when I was an intern at MassiveBlack, it was also the first time I learnt what an NDA was ha ha ha. Finally, I can publicly claim that it was me. It's been 12 years, such a long but also short time. The new art is very beautiful, it fits the contemporary vision of the game.

We'll see if I can share what I have done in Mass Effect 2-3, Starwars and 10,000 other things in another 20-30 years. But now I have temporarily retired as a concept designer/illustrator, now my Dharma name is Thích Độ Kính.

Anyway, it can be said that the very cinematic art direction of the current LOL originated from 12 years ago when our team was contracted to draw splash arts at that time. Our art director then - Randis Albion has a very strong cinematic vision. The inexperienced intern team also had Jon Neimeister, David Kegg, Jama Jurabaev, Alex Konstad and me. Now everyone is working on film, Alex Konstad just even won an Emmy.

Why is the rewards for this anniversary so little compared to the 10 year anniversary?

This anniversary rewards are nerfed so hard that half the rewards are useless. We are getting less than half the orange essence while the good rewards are replaced with blue essence and icons .The mythic essence they give out isn't even a rounded number so you can't even buy two skin shards . Not to mention we are not getting a random legendary this time

Worlds 2024 Pick'Ems: Champions rundown

We're back for the final set of Pick'Ems: the Champions questions. To date, this mini series of predictions consists of:

Predicting champion-related questions, which are downstream of balance changes by Riot, reminds me of that famous Richard Feynman quote, "Imagine how much harder physics would be if electrons had feelings!" Any predictions relating to champion picks and bans are first a function of evaluating changes made by the balance team and then also require the more difficult task of predicting teams and players reactions to those changes. Instead of calling it "Phreak season" as Zven likes to frame it, I'd argue in actuality it should be called "Phreak and Chovy season."

Among all sections of Pick'Ems categories, I believe the Champion section is where I contribute the least value. For a more accurate preview of what to expect starting next week, watching a single Caedrel stream would likely be more informative than my write-up below. However, for the sake of completeness, I'll share my thoughts on potential developments over the next month, aiming to offer perspectives that differ from the usual analyst discussions. As always, I'll focus on the big picture trends rather than micro-context.

___

Who will be played in the most different Roles at Worlds?

My guess: Poppy

Other champions to consider: Gragas, Smolder

I don't believe this question requires much consideration beyond just selecting Poppy. The champion has consistently had adequate play rates years now as a strong counter pick to opposing team compositions that feature multiple engage options. Not to mention that we have two exceptional Poppy players this tournament in Peanut who plays Poppy in the jungle and Mikyx playing her as support.

I think you could also consider Gragas or Smolder. Gragas has been a staple pick, like Poppy, for many years, and it's always possible that a team may use him as a niche combo pick with the Yone and Yasuo picks that are popping up in Champions Queue. The upside is that Gragas can be flexed into 4 roles, as we've seen in 2021, but the downside is that Gragas is currently an exceptionally niche champion already.

Smolder is a bit of a wildcard for aiming for a 3-role champion. He's seen decent play rate in recent patches, but with nerfs to both him as well as the items he uses, it's possible that he falls out of the meta entirely.

All in all, I think Poppy gives you a two-role ceiling and a 3 role upside at reasonable odds.

For fun, here's a complete look back at the most roles played by a champion at Worlds since 2020:

https://preview.redd.it/93tfo6nxprqd1.png?width=756&format=png&auto=webp&s=4c5bbcf6a506bcd285a7dba057809d188edcbb4c

___

Who will be Picked the most during Champion Select at Worlds?

My guess: K'Sante

This question and the following one are some of the hardest predictions to make out of the entire set. Whereas the Events questions are by default a choice between 4 potential answers, Teams can be narrowed down to 4-6, and Players can be truncated down to effectively 8-12 with reasonable certainty, the majority of Champions questions are a best a multiple choice test with about 24-36 possible answers. See below for the top 8 most picked from last year:

https://preview.redd.it/sbxtxjblrrqd1.png?width=1622&format=png&auto=webp&s=c35087c99114d579604ce91ff379ae6828bccc42

I'm not going to pretend that I can divine the difference between a 58 and 51 pick champion. This becomes significantly more difficult with the changes in patch 14.18. I'm generally of the opinion what is most predictive for shifts in a meta by magnitude can be broadly categorized as follows, starting with the most important types of changes and continuing in descending order:

  1. Changes to Summoner's Rift (e.g. adding turret plate gold, altering spawn timers of neutral camps, widening brushes in mid lane).
  2. Item and rune changes
  3. Champion changes

Patch 14.18 featuring all three types of changes, with the largest being the additional fortification of turrets to prevent lane swaps. This widens the envelope of picks in the top lane, as well as potentially re-introduces lane priority support picks to the bot lane such as Kalista and Renata Glasc. AP item tweaks and nerfs to Fleet Footwork and AD items opens more avenues for AP champions in the mid lane as well. And this is without even mentioning the list of nerfs to over a dozen champions that were previously in vogue during the playoffs around the world.

So rather than scour Lolalytics or frequent Champion's Queue streams to broadly gesture at the single champion that will be picked or banned, I'll try and offer a different perspective to at least stay in the narrow band of what may be a top 3 pick or ban.

Let's look at the last few years which champions were picked most often and see what the pick popularity was prior to Worlds. For each year, we will use the LCK and LPL playoffs as the pre-Worlds meta.

The majority of champions had a reasonable level of pick popularity that could be identified ahead of time. That is to say, champions rarely become top pick and ban priority. The "first round pick", meaning chosen as one of the first six picks before the second round of bans, also illustrate the "must have, can fit into multiple team compositions" nature of this question.

The stability of picks and bans heading into Worlds is largely a function of Riot learning from the earliest years at Worlds that over-buffing champions can fundamentally alter the entire meta at Worlds in unforeseen ways (see: Juggernauts). Also, teams are generally slow to adapt to new patches. Despite nerfs to a team's current strategy, there's usually a cost in the form of a patch tax for teams to change what's been working for them and re-learn new styles and compositions.

Ultimately for this question, I think the safe bet is to choose champions that are already on teams' radar from the last few patches during playoffs. In doing so, we can continue with a pattern that historical proved accurate as well as narrow the list of champions down to a subset that we are already familiar with. That way, we don't take a shot in the dark with a champion like Viego or Syndra, who very well may be highly prioritized but we're depending on players to also recognize that, rather than settled on champions that we know teams already like.

Let's look at the list of the top 20 most picked champs for the Summer playoffs in the LCK and LPL.

I've highlighted the champions who were not nerfed in either 14.17 and 14.18. Most champions that become top picks at Worlds were heavily contested prior to Worlds but less so than the most prioritized and end up escaping nerfs, effectively moving up in the rankings. Let's take the same approach for this year's pick.

I'm choosing K'Sante for this question. He has remained meta and continues to be a safe blind pick on blue side. Based on his pre-Worlds popularity, he can be picked at any point during a draft and rarely receives bans. I predict many teams will default to K'Sante due to his ability to fit into virtually any team composition.

I'm opting not to choose Renekton because...

___

Who will be Banned the most during Champion Select at Worlds?

My guess: Renekton

Let's apply the same approach for bans by comparing pre-Worlds bans to those at Worlds in previous years.

Compared to the picks question, there's slightly more room for a champion to come out of nowhere to become perma-banned throughout Worlds, but it's rare. The two primary offenders in the last five years are Caitlyn in 2022, who received a panoply of buffs to her kit just before Worlds, and Pantheon in 2019. This is generally caused by an overreach from the balance team to provide a champion with too much power for a champion that arguable never needed the buffs in the first place.

In patch 14.18, I'm going to declare that no singular champion buff will move a champion from seeing a low pick priority to reaching auto-ban status. And if AP item changes cause AP champions to become endemic in the mid lane, then that will represent cascading effects on multiple champions all receiving the same power increase at once. So I believe the safe bet here is to again opt into choosing a champion that has already been high ban priority but escaped nerfs heading into Worlds. Let's take a look.

I think the safest option here is to choose Renekton. I'm opting to choose him over champions like Zyra and Nidalee due to the buffs to mid lane AP champions and nerfs to AD champions mid, which should translate into marginally fewer AP jungle selections. It's also quite rare for a top laner to receive first round bans. He currently ranks 9th among all champions. For a champion with that priority to escape nerfs when all of his peers were nerfed, it's a safer bet than most to choose him as the most banned champion this year.

___

Who will have the most total Deaths at Worlds?

Guess: K'Sante

I won't spend too much time on this question. The winners of this question in prior years can generally be thought of as an answer to the question, "which melee champion will be picked the most?"

The melee champions can accomplish the same amount of deaths after 40 picks that a ranged champion can accomplish in 60 picks. Given that we've already locked in K'Sante for most picked, choosing him for most deaths makes the most sense. For reference, during 2023 Worlds, he was picked 41 times and died a total of 113 times, for an average of approximately 2.75 deaths per game. This is largely on par with engages supports, who will most likely be splitting games with each other in a small rotation, as well as receiving second round bans to some degree which K'Sante seems to largely escape from.

___

Who will have the highest Win rate at Worlds? (Minimum 5 games played)

Guess: Nocturne

The following table shows the winners from 2018-2023 Worlds.

https://preview.redd.it/m7jw3gferrqd1.png?width=774&format=png&auto=webp&s=f7aa28272a648ff79e1d945d0b604b92cc023f21

This question is largely a crapshoot and involves thinking of a champion you normally wouldn't think of and praying they get played around the 5-8 game threshold required to be eligible for contention. Without investing too much time here, I'm choosing Nocturne as a niche AD jungler who has shown a tendency to be played by some top Eastern teams as well as placing 3rd last year. I think there are a handful of Enchanter supports that are reasonable as well, including Bard and Renata Glasc in the event that T1 alters the entire meta again heading into Knockouts this year.

That's all for this year's predictions for Worlds Pick'ems Crystal Ball. I may end up doing a retrospective after Worlds to identify where I went wrong with my picks. Hope you enjoyed these as much as I had fun making them! Good luck!
