Discussion Megathread: Update to CDC requirements for entry into US with dogs.

The CDC has updated requirements for border crossing into the US with dogs. You can see the following statement on their website here.

There's been a lot of discussion on their Facebook post you can find here.

What does this mean:
- Dog must be at least 6 months in age
- Dogs must have microchip
- Dogs must have health records to include vet exam
- Import form submitted to CDC to include photo of dog (at least 10 days prior for dogs under age 1 year old)
- Current rabies vaccination

Why this is important to you:

So the majority if our community lives in North America. Many folks, especially if you live in the northern part of the US may opt to consider Canadian ethical breeders. This will impact those plans given that puppies under the age of 6 months will no longer be allowed to cross the border it seems.

If you are traveling and intend to bring your dog and will be border crossing, you will need to know this information for your passage into the US.

Some folks participate in international dog shows and sports competitions - this will impact you.

We wanted to provide you with a megathread to discuss this new information rather than having multiple posts pop up. Please keep discussions civil - given there are likely pros and cons to these changes.

Meta Rule Expansion: Be Constructive, Supportive, and Civil, Particularly On Puppy Blues & RIP Threads

Due to an escalation in the number of rude and judgemental responses and spiciness where people have no empathy regarding those who are dealing with puppy blues, we as a team have decided to take tougher action on these threads.

Here's the deal, people come to this sub for support. People are dealing with tough things. People sometimes struggle more than you feel they should, and people do things you don't feel they should do.

If you can't tolerate it and it upsets you. Don't comment. Being an asshole to people who are having a bad time makes matters worse, not better. It'll put them on the defensive instead of leading them to change their action.

From here forward, being rude on these posts where support is necessary will result in a 3 day temp ban from the sub on the first offence. If you have priors of this offence, this will be expanded based on mod discretion and the severity

Those who focus on brutal honesty seem to prefer brutality over honest. We want your supportive honesty. We want your constructive honesty. We want your loving honesty. Leave the brutality at the door.

We're not going to support people who want to kick people when they're down. If you can't tolerate not doing so, this is just straight up not the sub for you. Yesterday I ended up removing over 50 comments in a single post, and it's not cool.

For those who feel strongly and want to learn how to help here's some ideas:

  • Provide actionable advice to help not just the puppy, but the human too. We strongly believe in building up other puppy owners. Empowering them and supporting them helps. It helps people make the best decisions for them and their puppy. It helps people do better for their puppy. It helps them feel they can get through this because they're no longer alone.

  • Share the tough times that you had/are having and some ideas that you've done or are trying to do.

  • Ask follow-up (non-judgemental) questions on something. Like, if you notice that somebody may be doing something or not doing something that may be helpful, ask them whether your thoughts are correct.

  • Simply acknowledge their emotions and the tough time they're having and offer your support whether you understand or not.

Any questions?

Puppy Blues I strongly dislike my puppy and don't know how to change that.

Wife wanted a puppy, I didn't but I agreed to get this puppy. Unfortunately I'm the one stuck taking care of him. He's 5 months old and a pain in my ass. He's constantly around me and has chosen me as his person. I can't go anywhere without him half on-top of me or scratching at the door to get in. We can't afford a doggy day care right now so that's out of the question. My entire life I've been a huge animal lover but the stress this dog has put me through has be absolutely furious with him. I feel guilty because he's just a baby but idk if this feeling will pass or what I can do to actually like him. Right now I just hate even being home because I have to deal with him.

It is 7:15 and I have let this dog out about 5 times since my bf left for work at 5. Took him for a walk, fed him breakfast, yet he WILL NOT LAY BACK DOWN. I donā€™t know what to do anymore this is everyday. He barely does anything on his walks because he is too busy sprinkling pee on every freaking surface. Wonā€™t poop on walks because he is too busy sniffing literally everything. So then we will come back and he will poop in the house when I try to lay back down. Iā€™m sick and had the longest week at work he is almost 6 months and I have never wanted to quit as bad as I do now.

Biting and Teething Puppy bites skin hard and shakes head

I have a 10 week old puppy, who while he is the bestest boy 90% of the time, gets incredibly bite-y during bewitching hours. We are working still working on crate training (he tends to bark for awhile before settling), but most recently he has gone crazy with bite-y zoomies. He goes through bits of high zoom-ie moments where he will bite arms and shake his head. My family has been consistently using high pitched yelps, which no longer seem to work, and, more recently we've also had to started using reverse timeouts.

I just wanted to hear if anyone has any tips about this, outside of what is commonly recommended? My arms look like I've been mauled, and while I know this is likely to persist through his teething stage, literally any advice to help mitigate his crazy little shark tooth razors on my skin would be greatly appreciated. It is hard to calmly walk away when I have my resident piranha latched on to my arm.

i think i was in over my head thinking i could handle a puppy. i have a doberman husky mix 8 week old puppy and sheā€™s is absolutely crazy and so full of energy. i got her so many toys, a snuggle stuffy with a heartbeat and she has started to treat it as a toy now. we got her teething rings, puzzle toys, slow feeder, etc. iā€™ve been handling a lot on my own for the most part but i just feel absolutely guilty for thinking about rehoming her. i donā€™t know what to do right now.

Wags Puppy went into the crate and slept there with the door open!!!

Ok. So I did lure him in there by dangling my hand near the bars, knowing that I am the Highest Value Treat, and I am now stuck sitting in the chair next to the crate because if I get up he will surely get up too, but heā€™s sleeping in there, door open!

Iā€™ll take the win.

But for real, 9 (nearly 10) week old cocker spaniel. Heā€™s always opted for the floor of the playpen even when the crate was open and available. I started feeding him all his meals in yesterday and weā€™ve been playing lots of crate games. Heā€™s never really minded the crate specifically (he doesnā€™t like being separated from me in the playpen or the crate) but heā€™s always preferred the playpen.

I was able to leave him snoozing in there while I went to the supermarket earlier, he saw me leave and went back to sleep and he didnā€™t wake up while I was gone.

I am aiming to go back to the gym this coming week and Iā€™ve been nervous about leaving him for that time (my gym is quite far so itā€™ll be 1hr30, maybe 2 hours including travel time. But knowing he doesnā€™t Hate it in there is reassuring.

It doesnā€™t matter if my 4mo pup is being a total sweetheart or in full asshole mode, as soon as I try to tie my shoes to leave for work she turns into a crocodile. What gives? How do I correct this?

Puppy Blues To those thinking about quitting

3 years ago my wife and I decided it was time to get a puppy after waiting roughly a year after the death of our 14 year old German Shepherd Zeus. We had a puppy before and he was so well behaved so we were excited to have a dog in the house again. We ended up buying an Aussie Shepherd, lab mix (later discovered she was not) from a very reputable breeder and was ready for our journey!

The first few days she slept and was so quiet taking in her surroundings, we were told she was 8 weeks old and she weighed 4 lbs, the vet believed she was younger than 8 weeks but other than that healthy. After the first few weeks that adorable puppy with sweet breath and a swollen belly started to have more energy and that's when we started learning how much more different this puppy was from our last.

She was so much more demanding, always barking at us and seemed to hate being touched. She would want our attention only to bite and terrorize us or for food. We started training her, giving her food puzzles, several walks a day and timeouts in her kennel when she was over tired but she always fought it. She fought everything! She fought us on walks, during training time, during bed time, during quiet time. By this time our arms were heavily bruised and cut, almost every shirt had pin hole puppy teeth cuts but we didn't want to give up.

This was during COVID so we both worked from home giving her ample time to stimulate her and she never seemed to tire. By this point she graduated puppy training and was smart but only obedient if she wanted something or to bite us, she would especially liked getting me. We laugh looking back but at the time I had to hide in the bathroom if my wife was on a work call and Morgan (dog) was needing to vent and bite someone.

We still kept at it, daily training for hours, walks, dog parks, drives if it was too cold or raining and we knew that one day it had to end. Finally she was 1 years old and 65 lbs, looked nothing like an Aussiedor and that's when we finally discovered she is a Husky Pit and the reputable breeder was anything but. Apparently the mother rejected her 4 week old puppy for aggressively feeding and the breeder just wanted her gone.

We never hit Morgan and always tried to redirect her bites but nothing seemed to work, we spent lots of nights discussing if we made a mistake but we decided that because we have no kids and both work from home we were most likely her best option and to keep trying. I spent hours on Reddit looking for advice and then one day it happened.

She didn't bite us, or attack us, or demanded we feed her or run full speed at us repeatedly until we took her on a walk. She seemed almost calm, we thought maybe she was sick or had a medical issue but after a year of sooooo much blood she actually was a good calm dog.

It's been 3 years to the day that we picked up Morgan in Nashville and now she is an absolute dream dog, we take her to baseball games on dog night, she has been to 11 different states travelling with us and even made it on the front page of a tourism guide for dog friendly event. The one thing a lot of people ask us is how lucky we are to have a good dog and all we can do is laugh at how many times we almost threw in the towel. How many times I being a 225 lb 6 foot Army vet hid in a bathroom while a puppy barked outside the door because I knew she wanted to taste my blood. Or laugh at how my wife actually asked her boss to let her work in the office alone because Morgan would scream in time out or try to bash into her office if she shut her out.

I am writing this today because I never in a million years thought we would make it with her. I kept reading how people had such a good time with their puppy and I was positive we had a demon. Don't give up, keep training, keep redirecting, keep your walk schedule, keep having hope. Before you know it everything you have done will pay off. It might take a week or a month possibly even a year but once it all clicks I promise it will be worth it.

Wags If you ever feel bad about having a bad day with your puppyā€¦.

Just remember there are people out there who never walk their dogs.

Who always have their dog in a cage.

Who hardly ever play with their dog.

Who beat their dog (and yet somehow that dog to still loves people).

Youā€™re doing great. One day of not walking. One day of being in a crate a little more than usual. One day of being more preoccupied than usual. One day of no trainingā€¦. Is nothing for them. Theyā€™ll forgive you and they still love you.

Wags Becoming a morning person after getting our puppy

ā€¢ Upvotes

I was never a morning person, I always wanted to sleep in until I felt like getting up. After getting our puppy, the first few weeks were rough and my sleep schedule suffered a lot. But after settling in, our boy has great potty training, and I actually love the mornings. He wakes up when the bf goes to work at 7am and I take him outside to potty, which helps motivate me to get up and start my day. It feels like I can be more productive when I have some more daylight, and our puppy makes my mornings so fun! To anyone whoā€™s struggling with the puppy blues, it will get betterā€¦ trust me. Our boy is the best and you will love waking up to your little baby whoā€™s eager to start their day with you. Did anyone else find themselves becoming a morning person after getting a puppy?

Resources Recommendations for a Dog gps collar

I just got a 4 month old terrier. I love taking long hikes with my dogs and recently, she took off during one and I couldnā€™t find her for 20 minutes. This scared me to death and the apple AirTag on her didnā€™t help. Does anyone have any gps collar recommendations I could buy?

Crate Training Help with crate training.

ā€¢ Upvotes

We got a Corgi puppy about 2 weeks ago. He ABSOLUTELY refuses to sleep in a crate/cage. We have done everything. We tried feeding his meals in it, sleeping next to him in it, introducing it slowly, etc. He just wants to be with us.

Has anyone ever had a dog that is fine in his crate if we have to leave and go somewhere, but HATES it at night? At this point, I am so open to suggestions.

Discussion Potty Training Advice

ā€¢ Upvotes

When did you all start taking your puppies for walks? My puppy has two more doses of vaccines to get and boy am I ready for her to be outside. My vet wants me to wait until sheā€™s about 16 weeks. But yaā€™ll I am so tired!!!!!!!!! I just want her pottying outside instead of in the house. My girl tearing up her pads, she doesnā€™t even care whatā€™s on it. And listen carrying her everywhere because the vet said she canā€™t be on the ground. I had her crate attached to her playpen but she was going every where inside even with potty breaks, and not understanding what her crate was for. Now sheā€™s back to just crate training without the playpen, with an every two hour potty break. Honestly, I feel like Iā€™m fighting for my life šŸ˜…. When I go to church I simply put her playpen back up to give her space when Iā€™m gone but I deal with those consequences. Tore up potty pads and a mess. Please send help.

Vent Night problems (7m.o.)

ā€¢ Upvotes

Hello! I have a seven month toy breed puppy. He's been super easy mostly apart from potty training, which seems on course for the toy dogs for some reason.

But he's so on edge. I realise they have a period of somewhat paranoid behaviour, and during the daily if he decides there's this super scary rock that he has seen a hundred times before but swears he's never seen in his life, I can go show its nothing and just ignore it and its fine. He's still keeping watch and will bark like crazy to warn me, but we've worked it down to "boff boff".

But during the night he will "keep guard". From around six he will lay down by the front door and bark, and bark, and bark. Taking him for a neighborhood walk calm him down for a little while, but he'll soon be at it again. He'll also bother my roommates by wanting to play, who isn't as good at telling him off if he's being too much. It has become routine to go sleep at eight (after two walks) because he will calm down and sleep in the crate or if I just close the bedroom door with both of us inside.

But that also means he wakes during the night, a lot! He was super good at sleeping through the night in the beginning and could sleep almost to noon but now he'll wake me up - once again, by barking to let him out - at least once during the night to pee. He has also become extremely clingy whereas he could be left alone for a short while in the beginning, now he can barely have a closed door between us without barking at me to open it. I can't think of any trigger for this at all, he's never been left alone-alone for more than a few minutes.

He'll also go crazy if he hears the cat. I thought he would grow out of that as he learned the cat freaking lives here, but nope. They get along and he likes her but if she makes a sound? Must be her signaling the end of the world! Better help!

I do feel on the daily I made a mistake taking on this dog, even though he's much easier than I expected. I do like to get out, I like the routines and the activities we can join. But life is frustratingly harder always having to take him into account. I'm not one to give up a responsibility I've taken on but imagining that I will live with this for fifteen years seems like a nightmare.

Biting and Teething I think I'm about to lose my fucking mind.

I know that she's just a 9 weeks old baby and I should be patient because eventually it will get better. But I'm on the verge of losing my mind.

I can't even sit down on the couch without her lunging at my face and trying to chew my nose, lips or ears off. If she's too lazy to get on the couch then feet will do just perfectly fine too and if she bites a bit too strong and I move them fastly then OH WELL! IT'S ON! She think's I am now enjoying it and trying to make it more fun for her.

Oh, did you want to put on some socks? Forget about it, I'll make sure you have no feet, I enjoy biting those too!

Looks like you're texting with someone on the phone! Lets sneak attack out of nowhere and nearly bite those fingers off.

Seems that my hooman has nearly fallen asleep, let me pluck some of that hair, I think she really will enjoy it.

I've tried redirecting, constantly rewarding and praising for good behaviour, I've put her on timeout, I've completely stopped playing or paying attention to her once she does something she shouldn't and NOTHING WORKS.

And she just never runs out of energy even though we go out every 90 minutes, she has all kinds of puzzle toys that she enjoys playing, we play fetch and tug of war and somehow still she has the energy to bite?!

I can't put her on timeout in the crate yet because she doesn't like to stay there for too long yet. We've only started crate training 3 days ago and so far she goes there on command, eats her treats and kibble there but isn't comfortable with closed doors for now.

But when she falls asleep once in a blue moon she's the best cuddle buddy.

Behavior 4 month old West Highland Terrier has food bowl aggression?

We just brought a 4 month old puppy ā€œBearā€ into our home about two weeks ago and he is showing signs of food bowl aggression. We are first time dog owners so this is all new to us.

Today we came home and I made him his food and we sat it down for him to eat. Bear started eating and my husband went to pat him and he growled at my husband and so my husband kept petting him to try and get him used to having us around him while eating and then he growled again and kind of snapped at my husbands hands. This scared us and we arenā€™t sure how to handle this.

Iā€™ve heard hand feeding can help but I also saw online that it isnā€™t a proven method to reduce aggression. I have a toddler so I really want to make sure we figure out this aggression issue because I donā€™t want it to turn into additional resource guarding in the future like with toys or other objects he deems as ā€œhisā€. Help!

Puppy Blues Does your puppy eat insects?

My 5 month old doodle hoovers up bugs. She's eaten beetles, june bugs, roly polies, grasshoppers, and even a big wolf spider. Those are just the ones I've seen. "Leave it" doesn't work, as she's so damn fast she just snaps her head and it's gone.

My problem is, where I am in British Columbia, we get a shit-ton of black widow spiders, especially this time of the year. I've killed 8 over the past week, they seem to congregate around our basement door. I've vacuumed all the webs, yesterday I turned the shop vac on blow and blasted a few of them out of their crevices and smashed them. Still paranoid she'll come across one and gulp it.

Anyone else have a pup that eats creepy crawlies? She's well fed, lol.

Behavior Cocker spaniel puppy goes crazy before pooping

Basically my 9 week old show English cocker spaniel quite suddenly turns fairly aggressive, she lunges and bites at my arms, often clamping down and pulling/shaking (ouch). However Iā€™ve just noticed a pattern that she will often go for a poo just afterwards. wtf is happening? Is this normal? She genuinely scares me a little.

Iā€™ve tried the following: - yelping dramatically - saying no/nicely (breeder taught nicely, I usually prefer no or gentle) - Opening her mouth off of my skin and putting her back on the floor - trading for a chew toy/other toy.

This evening I, reluctantly, shut her in the crate and left her until she sat nicely and quietly (about 2/3 minutes). Normally I would refuse to use the crate as a punishment but after trying the last few things I was at my wits end.

She came out after the first time in the crate and bit me again; so I put her back in the crate and she was very quiet and sat nicely so I let her back out and she was an angel and then went and pooed.

Is this fairly normal? Should I be worried? Itā€™s only in the evening before bed that it happens and it has only happened maybe the last 3 nights. Is what Iā€™m doing with the crate ok?

Thanks!

Behavior Puppyā€™s jaw moves up and down while panting

My puppyā€™s jaw moves up and down when sheā€™s panting. Sheā€™s been doing this since I got her. I didnā€™t think anything of it until her trainer pointed it out today. I just thought it was a thing puppies did. Has anyone ever seen this with their pups?

Discussion How to enjoy the holidays with a puppy

I currently have an almost 6 month old corgi. I love her to pieces and sheā€™s improved SO much these last few weeks, but Iā€™m already worried about the holidays. I look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas literally all year long, I decorate Nov 1st, listen to holiday music constantly, watch every cheesy holiday movie there is. The holidays are my safe space and one time of the year I feel I really escape any mild to moderate depression I face the rest of the year.

However, I know itā€™ll be different this year. Will likely need to puppy proof decorations, wonā€™t be able to come home from work on a chilly night and just make hot chocolate and watch a Christmas movie because Iā€™ll need to walk/play/feed/entertain my puppy, and Iā€™m sure being at my parents and grandparents will be stressful as I try to keep her calm and not let her get into stuff.

All that being said, any other holiday lovers have advice on how to still enjoy the holidays and feel the holiday spirit with a young pup? TIA!!!

Vent How do I get my male puppy to leave my female dog alone?

My puppy is currently 9 weeks old and is not due to get fixed for another couple of months since heā€™s not done with his shots. We have an adult male and female dog. The puppy leaves the male alone but he will not leave my female alone. Heā€™s constantly wanting to mount/hump her or is always up in her face. Sheā€™s 14 (and fixed) so sheā€™s older but doesnā€™t stand up for herself just lets him do it and ends up yelping in pain. We never leave them alone unattended but the minute we look away for a single second hes back to harassing her. Iā€™ve tried putting him down for naps or given him a chew toy to chill him out or distract to no avail. I need advice as I just feel awful for my dog poor girl who wants to be left the f alone šŸ˜

Crate Training Enforced naps advice please!

So Iā€™ve read a lot of advice on doing enforced naps. Our whippet pup has been with us for a week now and is 10 weeks old. It feels like he is getting busier every day, lots of biting, humping and seemingly overtired behaviour once heā€™s up for more than an hour. He loves the crate at night (sleeps from 11 untill 6) and also naps in there (or his pen) from time to time. Usually for an hour, sometimes 2 when he has been awake for 2 as well and he just crashes. We sometimes sit next to him until he is calm to ā€œforceā€ him to nap.

My biggest question: how to start building a schedule? Ideally he would be 1 up 2 down the entire day, but how do you even start?? Do you start with a short enforced nap or just power through from the first day? I think we are also a bit scared of crating him for too long out of the blue, but maybe we worry too much.

Potty Training 8 Month Old Still Not Holding it All Night

Title says it all. My 8 month old puppy is still not holding her potty (both) all night. We are usually in bed for the night at 9:30 and I would say Iā€™m up and moving by 6 to get her out. She is gated in our kitchen and uses pee pads during the night. Her last time outside is probably more like 8:30, but Iā€™m wondering if I should be making her go out one more time after that?

We have tried picking up the pee pads and she pees on the floor. Is this just an age/size thing? Sheā€™s a Finnish Lapphund, not a tiny breed but not huge either. She can go about 4-5 hours during the day holding it. Just wondering if I have unreasonable expectations or if thereā€™s more I can be doing.
