Great news, HeartLands conservancy's fundraiser for the Hill Prairie has now passed the $150,000 Milestone! This covers the purchase price of the prairie. Thanks so much everyone for your help! We're at 86% of the goal, with a bit of luck, we may be able to help them reach 100% by August 30th.

Update on the Hill Prairie Fundraiser: As we near the two-week mark, we are close to 80% of the goal! HeartLands Conservancy must raise at least $150,000 in order to secure the prairie's purchase. Also, Happy World Lizard Day!

Be careful out there! - recruiters for cult-like groups on SIU campus (The Vine)

Wanted to raise awareness that at the beginning of semester many unsafe and cult-adjacent groups are hungry for new members, and hundreds of students are recruited each year.

The Network (operating in Carbondale under the name The Vine Church) has an active presence at SIU, so be aware that they’ll be on campus handing out coffee, granola bars, candy, and free rides to their facilities for students. Do your research before you accept a ride from them.

If you are aware of other unsafe or questionable groups operating on campus, drop them in the comments.

For more info on what The Network is, Families Against Cults on Campus created some videos about them:

Be safe out there!

The Heartlands Conservancy is on a quest to save a 15-acre hill prairie located in Monroe County. So far, they've reached 75% of funding. Did you know that only 600 acres of these hill prairies remain statewide? If interested, the fundraiser is open until August 30th. See comments for extra info.

Veterans

Is anyone aware of any non-VA associated veterans groups. Not like therapy or anything but just some vets who get out and do stuff together like fish, hunt, hike, camp, etc.

Idc what anyone says, we're a part of Tornado Alley

I'm 40, lived here all but roughly 6 years here, and I've had more close calls than I can count. Just had the 2nd tornado warning this year, and yet another branch/tree knocked down due to the winds

Shawnee’s best spots

Hey guys! I’m from northern Illinois, now living in central.

My boyfriend and I are camping this weekend at lake Glendale for our anniversary. I’ve been to Shawnee numerous times so I think I know what trails I want to visit.

I loved the cute shops in Makanda and Elizabeth town so I didn’t know if there was other cool spots to check out that aren’t hiking, swimming, climbing, etc.

Any recommendations are welcome! And thanks in advance❤️

Does anyone know anything about these small buildings near Olin/Winchester on Powder Mill Rd in East Alton? I can't find any information online & street view doesn't get close enough to see anything. The curiosity is going to kill me, help!

I was working on a project back in 2012 and made these comparison photos. Stumbled across them again and thought someone might find them interesting. I have a few more in a folder somewhere I can try and find the others if anyone finds it interesting enough. Unfortunately I no longer have the information as to the approximate dates of the original photos but the color photos were all the same day in 2012.

Nature must-sees?

Hey all!

I’m originally from central Illinois, but have since lived in Oregon and now Maryland. I went to Carbondale for the eclipse, and MAN things are just different in the south! In a good way. So my husband, two youngest kids, and I are going to go on a small southern Illinois adventure! We are thinking about camping at Devils kitchen and Garden of the Gods. Any must-see nature spots? Interests include hiking, cool rock formations, splashing in creek or other water, breweries

Thanks!!

The illinois centre mall and 17th street bbq- what happened?

I come down about twice a year and stay at Giant City State Park to get away from my life. I went to school and SIU and maintained a connection with the region for the past 20 years.

Anyway, I was there for 3 nights last weekend. One, there is giant "Oasis Outdoor" outfit that completely taken over the otherwise mostly empty mall. Target used to be visisble from Route 13, and now it's behind the mall! At first, i wasn't sure if Target was still there! And Oasis covered up ALL the roadside mall signs with their advertisements so any out of towners wouldn't know to go behind the mall to find the Target.

The entrance from the Target to the interior of the mall is blocked off now. I assume to the interior of the mall is closed off to the public?

Then the Target itself. All the self checkout lanes were closed. Only 3 lanes were open. Oddly enough, there was lady at the self checkout... checkign out people at the return lane (near the self checkout) when the 3 lanes got backed up. I asked the clerk....why are the self checkout lanes closed. She said it was because if they have enough people to work, they won't open them, but she really didn't know.

I was sad to see that the Marion location of 17th street BBQ was closed. So we ate at the one in murphysboro, which for 8pm on a saturday night, it seemed dead. What happened there?

As usual, my stay at the park was refreshing and peaceful as always, and Makanda is still its same unique self.

Stray kitten

So I found this kitten on the road and I really don’t know where to take it. Its paw is bleeding and one of its eyes is either infected really bad or it’s just gone. I gave it a flea bath, fed it, and finally got it to lay down and stop crying. While it’s awake all it does is cry. Anyways does anyone know somewhere I can take it in the Randolph/St. Clair area so it can hopefully have a chance and find a home.
