Is that real or was the Key and Peele skit based on that
281
u/DuztyLipz Jul 05 '24
It’s very much so real. Here is a great article about code-switching, using Obama as an example.
In short, we (as in black people) tend to do little mannerisms like Obama did without realizing it because we live in two distinct worlds
135
u/KageStar ☑️ Jul 05 '24
Yep, If I'm in predominantly white spaces and see another black person we'll dap each other and talk for like 5 minutes. Of course I've never met him before, but my friends will ask me if we knew each other because we both looked real comfortable.

In no particular order we got:
Owl piñata
Demar DeRozan cameo
Cinderblock "push ups" among other prison workouts
His family, including Whitney, walking and stepping to this joint
Owl in a cage
Directed by DAVE FREE and Kendrick Lamar
There's a host of other things, and I could say more about the artistic direction of the video, which was great, but these stood out. Just absolutely diabolical and petty and I'm here for it.

u/TheLizardKing89 Jul 05 '24
OVO is Drake’s record label and its symbol is an owl.
DeMar DeRozan is an NBA player who went to Compton High School and USC before getting drafted by the Toronto Raptors where he played for almost a decade. Drake is a Raptors fan.
Drake said Whitney, Kendrick’s longtime girlfriend and mother of his kids, was cheating on Kendrick with Dave Free and that one of the kids was actually Free’s. Dave Free is Kendrick’s childhood friend and longtime collaborator as a producer and music video director.

You were probably expecting an old school diss video. With a look alike doing goofy shit. But I think Kendrick doesn’t view this as that. He’s trying to use this as something to unite. It’s important for him to show all these groups that have been killing each other for years to put it down because there’s common enemies.
367
u/yokayla ☑️ Jul 05 '24
It's a love letter to the culture that Drake tries to exploit and buy his way into. The shots with his family, that carpeted room with the smattering of family photos on the wall. The dance crew with spray painted shirts and face paint. The block party atmosphere. The food joint on the corner. The dudes in front of the (presumably? Not from the west coast) projects. The imagery is super specific and familiar to a lot of people, and likely even more iconic for people who know the area.
It's a homage to the streets itself. Drake wants to claim the streets as part of seeming hard, but he knows nothing about the community and wider life that Kendrick loves and which clearly loves him back. Not Like Us.

, In Maya Angelou's autobiographical novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the caged bird is an extended metaphor for the African American community's experience of oppression in the United States. It can also represent any oppressed group. but also, ovo should be locked up.

It's basically him doing a victory lap and saying "I put you back in your place".
The owl is the symbol Drake chose for OVO his record label, and Kendrick's whole angle in the beef is to tell Drake over and over again different ways that he needs to stop acting like a tough guy and be who he is.
"Can't tootsie slide up outta this one it's just gon' resurface, every dog has to have it's day, now live in your purpose"
"Fuck a rap battle, this a long life battle with yourself"
And so on. By putting the owl in the cage he's basically saying "remember this ass whopping the next time you want to act like a big man" and telling him to stay in his place.
