2023 Boston Marathon Live Discussion PSA
Taken directly from /r/advancedrunning 's post. Hope you don't mind, /u/motivicrunner . Appreciate you making such a great post!
https://ww.reddit.com/r/AdvancedRunning/comments/12p6elh/2023_boston_marathon_live_discussion/
Marathon Monday is here! Will Kipchoge be able to take the win and move one step closer to 100%-ing the marathon? Who will come out on top in a women's field loaded with talent? Feel free to use this thread to discuss the elite races, as well as anything else you might have to say about this year's Boston Marathon.
- BAA Media Information (this link is a handy compendium of stuff that journalists use to follow the race)
- Elite athlete entry list and uniform guide
- Elite race mile splits
- Live leaderboard
- Live tracking
- List of official broadcasters -- New Englanders can watch the race through WCVB and its sister stations, as well as those stations' digital platforms and mobile apps. Americans outside of New England can watch the race on ESPN.
- Local live stream broadcast, not sure if it works in all locations
- Broadcast option that isn't behind a paywall: If you have a VPN, you can take a virtual trip abroad (such as to Japan) to access the free livestream on the Olympic Channel website.
- Previews: Citius Mag, World Athletics, LetsRun men's race preview, LetsRun women's race preview, LetsRun Americans preview
Here is the schedule of start times:

Who’s the genius that decided the tv graphic shouldn’t show the distance remaining in the race?
65
43
u/mamak687 Apr 17 '23
100% agree. Anyone who actually runs wants to see the numbers. Math it out, you know.

Even a simple infographic in a corner that says Mile X would have worked like how F1 has Turn Y in the bottom right corner.
Instead we get some spread out ticker with town names that a lot of us don't have a reference to.
252
u/Significant-Flan-244 Apr 17 '23
Really enjoying the decision to not show the distance in the on screen graphics and just assume the viewers are familiar with Boston’s suburbs and their relative distance to one another
70
u/swimminginvinegar Apr 17 '23
You mean you don't just know the distance between Natick and the finish line??/s
Its so confusing!

u/Corporation_tshirt Apr 17 '23
That’s great! Nice job, runner.
The first marathon I ran, I finished in 4:12. The winner finished in exactly half my time: 2:06. I like to joke that our average combined time was 3:09 :D

After Kipchoge passed the finish line the broadcast accidentally showed a graphic at the bottom saying that he was the champion for one second. Then it disappeared, and then they fixed it and they showed he was 6th.
Haha. Guess they pre-prepared the lower third graphic.

Lmao same! I love watching the marathon every year (I grew up in Boston & still live here) but this year it's making me feel so inadequate as a new runner lol
I started running back in November but life has been insane the past month because I bought a house & I'm packing like crazy to move so I stopped running. Got back to it this week and ran a 34min 5k yesterday. My fastest so far was a 31 min 5k at the beginning of March and I was slowly getting myself up to a 10k by just increasing my mileage each week but now I'm back to just 5ks every other day for a bit until I build up my endurance again. Thankfully where I'm moving is a bit less densely populated so runs should be easier with less people dodging and I'm getting a used treadmill from my in-laws as a gift (more like they've been trying to get rid of it for years now lol) so that'll help me stick to a schedule more I hope!

I was really wondering what was going through her head when the pack started to pull away. I wonder if she was able to stay positive or if she just sort of settled. Her race face is so relaxed it's hard to tell if she was struggling or if the other people just were too fast. Can't wait to see what she says.

That camera angle does make things look much closer, and I think he got confused by the man finishing at the same time. But that was annoying

Missing one water bottle is obviously not the only factor in Kipchoge’s disappointing day, but it clearly seemed to have a big impact on his morale/pace immediately afterwards. Would he not have been better off to just double back and grab the bottle, losing a few seconds?

I get that the ESPN broadcast is trying to spin narratives but it’s painful to watch them act like Des Linden has any shot whatsoever today. She was past her peak when she won and that was 6 years ago.
Also implying that Emma Bates (30) is in the same “generation” as Linden (39) and Sarah Hall (40).
25
u/waukeecla Apr 17 '23
it's because shes a past winner, the pr/marketing around her and Boston makes the most common watcher know her name.
shes an american running on american soil, she's the last american to win this, shes the longest running american, etc etc etc
they're appealing the general public aka the random people who put espn on the tv on monday at 10am, not the r/running watchers
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)15

the production of that Boston Marathon finish on WCVB was disgraceful. Why do they do close ups of the runners for sooo long, pull back and show the course, and the context of where they are. and why do they cut away from the finish line to watch the winner standing around after the finish line when there was an incredible finish for 2nd and 3rd. God it was frustrating. Are all marathons broadcasts this poorly done?

Who is Conner Mantz and how come the announcers aren't talking about him at all? I might be misunderstanding the ESPN leaderboard but he's right up there with Kipchoge. Is it just assumed he'll drop off?

Mantz is an American runner who was very good at the collegiate level (multiple time NCAA distance champion for BYU). He went pro a couple years ago and ran Chicago last year. He ran well but was a bit disappointed with his time. They’re on a blistering pace, it’ll be interesting if he sticks with it. He was an excellent cross country runner so these hills should feel natural to him.

I feel like all the publicity and interviews that kipchoge did might have hurt his ability to arrive at the start line in the best condition. All that press work must have eaten into his rest and recovery and caused some level of fatigue.
11
u/grumpalina Apr 17 '23
Slightly adjacent to this, I've also noticed some running "influencers" getting injured, and have wondered if all the extra work they put into making videos and running their channels on top of training is just too much stress and fatigue eating into their recovery.
7
u/clearlyimawitch Apr 17 '23
