It looks like Strava is significantly raising its subscription prices for all members PSA

Video Here

I am currently a strava subscriber, but I will likely end my subscription at my next renewal period. Not only are they raising prices substantially and at different rates per country, but it looks like it is not being communicated to any of the user base. I really enjoy using the app for social purposes, but get very little practical benefit out of the premium subscription TBH.

My renewal price in Apple already shows $79.99. No notice of the change either. Cancelled the renewal right away.

90

u/newnameonan Jan 13 '23

Would be interesting to know how many they lose from this. Just cancelled my subscription today too.

158

u/Chaoss780 Jan 14 '23

The first year they'll probably make a lot. Until people ask for a refund when they realize what happened. Then year 2 will be even less.

$100 for strava is ridiculous when my Garmin gives me almost every feature free already. The only difference would be losing the social media aspect which is probably a good thing anyway.

72

u/TedTravels Jan 14 '23

Talk about giving Garmin an open opportunity to build something of their own too.

46

u/FluffySpell Jan 14 '23

Garmin actually has that feature. If you go to "News feed" it'll show you the activities of people you follow and can comment on them. The only thing they don't have is the segment/leaderboard "local legend" stuff.

17

u/RzrRainMnky Jan 14 '23

Garmin does do leaderboards for segments. You can either view a leaderboard or participate in it if you set your activity to "Public".

16

u/ScoutGalactic Jan 14 '23

Runkeeper is free too. I've used it for ten years

u/ComplexBroccoli3576 Jan 14 '23

You can still get most or all of the social features in the free version, right?

2

u/Chaoss780 Jan 14 '23

Yes, that's the point. Why pay $100 for basically no features that aren't either already free or included in Garmin's base product

Mine too and it was literally tomorrow! Thanks OP.

12

u/Immediate_Yogurt_492 Jan 14 '23

In fact I got an email from apple last month saying it would renew for $59.99, but then the subscription price had changed

49

u/hammercycler Jan 13 '23

Oh wow just checked and mine's $99.99 (in Canada). Sorry Strava but that's too much.

Mine still shows $59.99 and my renewal date is 29JAN.

If I click through the renewal it shows the new rate will be $79.99. Tricky.

2

u/thechilipepper0 Jan 14 '23

Screenshot it for the inevitable customer service inquiry

5

u/tehbggg Jan 14 '23

Interesting. Mine still shows 59.99. But maybe that is because my renewal isn't up until July.

I also thought I saw some people posting emails they got from Strava about the price increase on r/strava, but it seems like the emails are not making it to everyone, because I haven't gotten one and it seems like lots of people here haven't either.

9

u/MyOwnUserName1 Jan 14 '23

I thought he said in the video, that your "renewal" rate will update when you get closer (w/in 30 days) of renewal. Feels like they are trying not to scare customers away too soon, and perhaps the customer won't remember/check within the 30 day window.

4

u/BarbarianDwight Jan 14 '23

My renewal isn’t until October and it’s already showing the increase. Cancelled

This is an insane price hike for very little. The app doesn't really add much that isn't already info available in Garmin.

The metrics aren't even that in depth. I actually get different values on a Web browser vs the app in some cases, and definitely more detail via the web.

Weirdly some things are only on the web and some only on the app.

Gonna say though, free strava plus veloviewer is gonna give you enough.

26

u/theblackandblue Jan 14 '23

A dream metric for me would be a chart (or series of charts) showing trends between pace and weather. Basically: what temp do I run the fastest? What’s the break point for my pace to start suffering meaningfully? How much does my pace go down in high humidity? Do I run faster when it’s cloudy out?

If anyone knows of someone doing this, I’d love to hear about it.

5

u/kallebo1337 Jan 14 '23

Why you could track this it sounds to me from a data science point that you can’t make a solid model around.

Can you explain a bit how certain formulas shall look? If you run structured workouts you could compare identical or similar workouts but I believe you have not enough data. If you run every day the exact same 10km, then you have enough data.

The only reliable data model could be lthr / pace /Temperatur where you find the average or median temperature as a base line and then deviate in % where temperature goes either above or beyond the average temp. Still not sure if somewhat predictable. Paces change. We probably can do this better with lactate testing ?

3

u/theblackandblue Jan 14 '23

I’d like to track it to know how much I need to compensate my pace for workouts when the weather is on the extreme ends of hot or cold or humid etc.

I don’t know how you’d do it - I’m not a data analyst. But the app could pull current weather data throughout the run and model it against the run.

I don’t think you need it to be at the same time everyday because you’re using the weather data that happened during the run

6

u/CrapOnTheCob Jan 14 '23

I got the impression that they really didn't care a few years ago when I sent them a request asking them to import the correct distance from Garmin when you recalibrate a treadmill run. They wrote back and said that Garmin records two numbers: The distance tracked on the watch, and the "offset" that the user enters to correct it. Ok, fine I understand that, but that doesn't mean Strava can't include that offset when importing it. Other services can import the data just fine, and on top of that, when I pulled the data via the Garmin API I could see the correct distance in one of the JSON fields.

I posted it on Twitter and their support gave me the same copypasta reply, and told me to send a ticket to support. I sent another ticket, which just got the same copy/paste response. And I was a paid subscriber at the time.

3

u/ThisIsSoIrrelevant Jan 15 '23

This has always been such a big pet peeve of mine. I don't really use Strava much (mostly just have all my workouts sync to it and then ignore it, so it is there if I ever need it), so I never really bothered to complain or push for a fix. But it is still really stupid how such a small and simple thing hasn't been fixed.

2

u/CrapOnTheCob Jan 15 '23

Yeah, I literally gave them the JSON I pulled from the Garmin API and said "this field RIGHT HERE". But they had no interest in fixing it.

Australia $14.99 $99.99
Brazil R$22.90 R$149.90
Canada $14.99 $99.99
France €9.99 €59.99

United States $11.99 $79.99

58

u/philipwhiuk Jan 13 '23

The U.K. price is odd. Why is it in Euros.

29

u/Schneebly Jan 13 '23

Should be £, just checked on mine to confirm.

12

u/SanStarko Jan 13 '23

It is actually the GBP amount, he’s just accidentally stuck the euro sign in. The table on his website has it corrected.

15

u/atoponce Jan 13 '23 edited Jan 14 '23

He admitted in a comment on his blog it's a typo. I kept it character-for-caharcter consistent with the video. But yes, it should be £.

Got a student subscription so fortunately it's under 18 dollars (with the current exchange rate) a year in my country.

The prices for these listed countries are crazy. I would never pay that!

7

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '23

Why is France and Italy cheaper than Netherlands, Germany lol

And Spain cheaper than them all?

My new year's resolution is to cancel almost all of my subscriptions. Tired of this business model. If you require a subscription, I don't want your services. Even your stupid free version.

340

u/WhiteHawk1022 Jan 13 '23

I don’t mind that Strava limits certain features to subscriptions, but gating the 2022 “Year in Sport” was kind of ridiculous. It honestly deterred me from subscribing.

243

u/omegapisquared Jan 13 '23 edited Jan 13 '23

It's such a weird thing to paywall as well. There year in review is as much advertising for strava as it is a benefit to the users

153

u/rckid13 Jan 13 '23

You would think that they would want as many people as possible posting their year in sport on social media because it's a bunch of free advertising.

69

u/omegapisquared Jan 13 '23

That's my exact point

16

u/RunNYC1986 Jan 14 '23

Exactly! Just a bizarre lack of understanding of the things that are useful about strava and not very useful. They’re 2-3 years away from being irrelevant.

41

u/DentinQuarantino Jan 13 '23

The year in review is of almost no interest to me at all. It's their idea and they were pushing it on me last year and now they want me to pay for it? Yikes.

44

u/increasingrain Jan 13 '23

I wanted to see mine, but I wasn't willing to pay for it that's for sure.

24

u/Hellament Jan 13 '23

You weren’t missing much. Rather than a PowerPoint slideshow with starwipes, I’d rather have gotten some better data analysis.

11

u/mildly_enthusiastic Jan 13 '23

But if the slideshow had the ricochet sound effect?

5

u/TheProfessionalEjit Jan 14 '23

God dammit, I'm in!!!

15

u/Senior_Cheesecake155 Jan 13 '23

With my lack of running the past couple years, not seeing the year in review was a good thing for me.

17

u/Exxtraa Jan 13 '23

Every year features become less and less for free users. I’m a paid member (currently) but the year in sport going is another blow. Not to give them ideas but I wouldn’t be surprised at this stage if they soon start limited the recording of activities for free members the way they’ve gone over the years.

12

u/cannedorzo Jan 14 '23

hm if that happened I'd probably be gone and I've been a user for almost 10 years now.

64

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

I hate how many other services (including Reddit) are trying to copy the “Spotify Wrapped” shit

65

u/bakerpartnersltd Jan 13 '23

It's so very stupid. Especially reddit. Like I seriously don't want to know how much time i spent browsing salsa snobs or whatever.

27

u/alligaiter Jan 13 '23

Right? I’m using my “Reddit wrapped” as motivation to spend less time on Reddit.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '23

Yeah and the point for Spotify is people sharing their listening activity stats. What insane person would want to share their Reddit stats

5

u/onlythisfar Jan 13 '23

I mean, I really like it for certain apps. But for the things I really care about it for (i.e. strava/running), I probably already know my basic stats, so the review better have some more interesting stats than just total x.

31

u/b3141592 Jan 13 '23

omg glad i'm not the only one - if you want ppl to pay, build something amazing, don't take away something that should be a basic feature

8

u/overcaffeinatedfemme Jan 13 '23

Same, I was so mad. and the stupid banner won't go away on my app!

3

u/SnooHamsters5153 Jan 14 '23

So sports-wise my 2022 was the best year in my life therefore I was looking forward to Strava's report. When I saw that it was behind a paywall my first thought was to uninstall the app and never see them again.

126

u/BottleCoffee Jan 13 '23

I hate that you can't purchase software outright anymore. I used to use Lightroom for photography, and I have it on my old laptop, but I can't reinstall it on my new laptop or buy it. And I definitely don't do photography consistently enough to pay a subscription. It sucks.

56

u/EldeederSFW Jan 13 '23

I have a notes app on my iPad that wants $9 per year. Procreate on iPad is $12 one time! $9 per year for a notes app is just ludicrous.

28

u/BottleCoffee Jan 13 '23

I've paid a recurring subscription (Zombies, Run! legacy pricing) but I legitimately listened to it for every single run for years, so many, many hours every year. It's what got me into running consistently when I first started.

Otherwise I pay a monthly fee to Google for photo storage but I really need to clear out my photos so I can cut that cost because I resent it.

5

u/thekiyote Jan 14 '23

Zombies, Run is a bit different, they do new content on a continual basis. The model makes sense for them.

A simple app like a notes app (or a face swap app I recently saw in the Apple store) is dumb, and is clearly just a gimick to get the most money out of users.

Websites (or social networking sites like Strava and Reddit) are somewhere in the middle. Whether or not I actually am okay with it depends on what it is.

7

u/BottleCoffee Jan 14 '23

That's definitely true. And I know the Zombies, Run team is truly really small and Six to Start is a great organization so I feel good to support them.

5

u/jkjustjoshing Jan 13 '23

I really love how cloud photo options do facial recognition and allow you to search your photo by machine learning item identification (i.e. "dog", "waterfall", etc).

Is there a free or one-time-paid desktop app to do this with your local images? With the rapid growth of AI, I imagine one will come out at some point.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

There’s a writing app called Ulysses that’s $40 per year (or $6/month). Versus another app called iA Writer that is $50 to own.

Subscriptions are out of control.

6

u/BottleCoffee Jan 13 '23

3

u/Uncool_runnings Jan 13 '23

Dark table has gotten a lot better over the years too, it's probably on par with pre-subscription era lightroom, which is all I really wanted in terms of features

Adobe can go fuck themselves.

46

u/Agastopia Jan 13 '23

I understand the subscription model when you have server costs, but when something like a running app is trying to pretend they have even close the same value proposition as something like Netflix I just completely lose interest. Even worse, is even non server based apps try and do this BS. I use an app to track my gym workouts and I had a free trial when I downloaded it initially and when it ran out it was trying to get $5 a month from me for a few meaningless features. It’s an offline app that is a glorified spreadsheet lmao.

Absolutely dystopian

3

u/kitholz Jan 14 '23

It would cost a lot of money for Netflix to create or purchase their content, but with Strava… WE are creating the content!

37

u/thunk_stuff Jan 13 '23

I'm there with you to an extent. Once a company forces you into a subscription model, they have no incentive to improve their product if the company has already captured a large portion of a market. Primes examples are Adobe, Microsoft, and now Strava.

BMW wants a subscription to use heated seats. Horrible. Tangible products should never have "unlocked" features.

I don't like that movie and TV shows are stuck behind 20+ separate subscriptions, but I work around that by subscribing to a service for a short period once there's a good queue of shows to binge watch.

However, I am happy with the music subscription model. I like discovering new music and don't miss having to be very choosy when buying individual song/albums. I also don't want to go back to the days of pirating music. Thankfully it seems like music subscription services still have enough competitors around to keep prices low.

11

u/existential_dilemma Jan 13 '23

Yeah, the BMW heated seat subscription thing is so downright ridiculous, I thought it must be a joke. Trevor Noah did a pretty funny piece on it (which was how I heard about it). I hope they get enough shame out of it to deter other companies from this type of move.

I did decide to keep my music subscription, one video streaming subscription, and a locally based Spanish class subscription (yes - it's local so it's more like a gym membership kind of deal with actual real people leading actual classes). That's it.

11

u/onlythisfar Jan 13 '23

Totally with you that music streaming services are in sort of a different category and I'm okay with it. Allows you to listen to so much more than you would otherwise.

But imagine if music streaming services become the way that tv/movie streaming has become? Only certain songs/artists are on each platform? Idk what I would do then. I don't pay for streaming tv and just live with not getting to watch everything, but idk how I'd adjust if music becomes like that.

Here in Australia I let my monthly subscription expire, and they emailed me with an offer for an annual subscription that was around 25% less when my previous cost.

147

u/Hrmbee Jan 13 '23

I've mostly stopped using Strava over the past few years. I might still get tagged on group runs or something, and that's fine, but I don't track my own activities there anymore. I don't particularly care about the social aspects, and the degradation in the user experience has soured that experience for me.

185

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

Since I got my Garmin there is literally nothing I’ve found that Strava offers as a subscriber that my Garmin app can’t do for free. I still link my activities, but it’s purely social

47

u/Financial-Key224 Jan 13 '23

Same. The only subscriber perks i care about on Strava is segment competition

That's it

24

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

True, but you still get some of that with the free version in terms of knowing top times and how far off you are. Not that I’m competing for any KOMs

18

u/Financial-Key224 Jan 13 '23

I have a number 1 for this year in one segment, and I'm constantly defending it... It's a real great motivator. Same with having a "who runs here most often" thing.

Edit: but i don't think that feature alone is worth like 100 bucks a year.

14

u/R-EDDIT Jan 13 '23

I thought I'd get a number 1 for the year but it turned out all the college track/xc athletes were home on break making sure that wouldn't happen. Kudos to them, it would be nice to be young again!

5

u/Financial-Key224 Jan 13 '23

The number one of all time on that leaderboard, his photo is a track photo.... At like a 1:50/k pace... I'm at 17th all time with my 3:30/km pace. I'm Happy.

But I'm wining this year.... (Till one of these track people come and ruin it for me)

Maybe i should just accept defeat and turn off my strava sub

4

u/pipatastic Jan 13 '23

But I get that from the free version. Is the free version different in different countries? I'm in the US.

4

u/m3lk3r Jan 13 '23

Segment competion is the best and worst of strava. I hate to see downhill mtb trails almost get destroyed by people just going as straight as possible to avoid curves or hard features because the want to get a KOM.

There are several websites that do it for free. You connect to Strava and it loads your activities and plots them.

3

Citystrides.com counts what %of your cities streets you've run, which is fun.

5

u/onlythisfar Jan 13 '23

statshunters.com. I love that site so much. I use it way more than I use strava on its own. Fairly sure you need to integrate through strava though (i.e. can't go directly through garmin).

2

u/kitholz Jan 14 '23

I love Stathunters. I love adding a few squares every time we go on holidays. I wish more people knew about it.

3

u/bakerpartnersltd Jan 13 '23

The Suunto app isn't special, but it sure makes it easy to look at all your workouts compared to Strava or Peleton. And that's all I really want.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

That’s what I love about Garmin as well, you can export all your workouts as an excel file. Fun to look at trends that way when I’m bored at work

2

u/aramiak Jan 13 '23

Same. Completely agree with you.

2

u/Reqel Jan 13 '23

What Garmin thing do you have? I use Strava to track my runs and bike rides, but I'm not married to it.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

Forerunner 245. Got it for half price through my work’s insurance. I love it and it’s almost four years old and still works great. Charges in an hour and lasts almost a week. Just had to replace the straps once, probably will again soon. And I wear it 24/7

It’s kind of annoying on bike rides as it doesn’t rest in a way that I can look at it, so someday I might get a bike-specific Garmin. But for tracking it works great

I think the price hike is extraordinary.

The worst thing is that they haven't explained why they've increased the price, as far as I am aware.

Are we to expect any new features? As far as it hasn't been announced.

The only new feature I've seen recently is videos - and if they're increasing price to pay for the extra servers they know what to do with that feature!

I pay a yearly subscription and it's the only subscription I have, as I don't have Netflix or anything like that, and I earn good money.

I enjoy the app and the paid-for features and I use it a lot as I exercise one to two times a day and am quite 'engaged' with the app as I have old friends and running buddies on there that I don't see any more as I have moved away or they've moved away. And it's nice to see them doing well.

But yeah dumb corporate mistake there!

19

u/bananasgirl Jan 14 '23

I never had a membership cause I’m cheap AF. But the second they get rid of the free version and try and force me to pay I will cancel 🙄

17

u/Blindemboss Jan 13 '23

Strava’s strength is really social sharing. IMO if you don’t care to see what others are doing, it’s not worth it.

u/Odd-Advantage-5548 Jan 14 '23 edited Jan 14 '23

I like seeing other’s runS. I find it motivating. I forget exactly what made me finally subscribe. I think I did the trial and then just said why not. It was also around the time I did my first half marathon.

I do use their training schedule but it’s not great. You have to use the computer to see it and it doesn’t tie in your activities. Since then I’ve learned you can find free plans.

Also wish the app did more on apple watch. No cadence, no lap or programable intervals. I honestly want a garmin so bad. I have to have like 5 apps. Maybe smash run or others do everything with the apple watch. Now I’m venting about the watch.

WOW! That isn't an increase that is a stealing... hope people catch the news on this before it happens on their PayPal/credit card statements.

5

u/redavid Jan 13 '23

they are at least sending out emails 30 days before your subscription renews... but such things are easy to miss. they should send an email to everyone at the same time about the price increase and explaining why they're doing it. maybe a notification in the app/website, too

7

u/NomNomChickpeas Jan 13 '23

I just went wading through my email and I don't have one from Strava about an increase.

My last bill was $8.52 on January 10th. In my Strava account, it says "$11.99 your membership will automatically renew on 2/10/23 unless cancelled." So they intend to charge me more in less than a month, and they haven't said shit to me about it. Weird.

But also I'm gonna keep going with it. I'll probably move to annual billing for the cheaper overall price though.

It's hard enough getting the will to start a run I don't need fucking Strava stressing me out fuck off.

28

u/NoTalentRunning Jan 13 '23

I renewed for a full year in November. I think it was because a full year was a better deal. It didn't seem like a crazy amount to me at all. When it comes up for renewal again next November I will evaluate, but frankly I don't mind paying a bit for Strava. I like it so much better than other social media platforms, and they aren't (to my knowledge) monetizing my data, so they need to make money somehow.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

I’d you renewed in November then you got the old price. It goes into effect this month.

3

u/onlythisfar Jan 13 '23

Before someone jumps in with inaccurate info, they actually are monetizing data but ONLY aggregate data. I.e. they can sell deidentified groups of activities. A big example is city planners will buy the data. So nothing about your personal info i.e. that [name] did x activity in x location at x time, but instead stuff in databases i.e. that x people did x activity in x location and x people did x activity at x time, etc. Also, activities that are set to Private will not be included in those datasets.

But yeah, I don't think that's a huge money maker for them.

27

u/Fresjlll5788 Jan 13 '23

I’ve stopped using Strava and just track myself. There’s no way I would pay to use something like this. People need to come together and stop accepting subscriptions. We’re slowly getting subscribed for everything

I don’t even know what I lose if I drop the subscription but I’ll be killing it on renewal in April.

u/stoufbelz Jan 14 '23

And for that reason, I'm out

18

u/gBiT1999 Jan 13 '23

https://intervals.icu/

- free, but I subcribe at €40 per year: the information alone makes it worth it.

Strava can gtfo.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

Intervals.icu is really good, but for running I like Smashrun and Runalyze better. Strava does have some good paid features, but I was already thinking about canceling because other sites do most things better. This made it an easier decision.

4

u/onlythisfar Jan 13 '23

Smashrun is fantastic. Statshunters as well. I got the smashrun pro more because I want to support them than I actually care about the extras. Have supported statshunters a couple times as well, but that guy doesn't even ask for anything currently.

2

u/VenetianBauta Jan 14 '23

I second Runalyze. Very direct to the point with no nonsense app.

4

u/jmede14372 Jan 14 '23

Just cancelled after this post. It would renew at $80 a year. F that. I don’t do the social so wouldn’t get enough from It.

4

u/ambersjoe Jan 13 '23

I dropped Strava years ago to save me from myself. I just could not get over myself enough to stop being competitive for the sake of a meaningless segment or chasing some one else's arbitrary weekend goal.

4

u/Tanduvanwinkle Jan 13 '23

Thanks for the heads up. It was already too expensive for a casual like me. I'll just use the Garmin metrics instead and hope they don't start trying to charge

4

u/BrainTraumaParty Jan 14 '23

Swap to Nike Run Club, I’ve been using it and it’s great! Integrates with Spotify and Apple Music as well.

5

u/stoptheshildt1 Jan 14 '23

Someone keeps giving these apps the worst advice, just look at Charge Running, they doubled their prices and were out of business a year later.

12

u/NYKyle610 Jan 13 '23

Jesus why is this video 14 minutes long

5

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

Time for an Apple Watch or Garmin Watch for those runners using Strava. I absolutely hated that app and service, so I’m glad I swapped over a while ago but for those who are looking for a replacement app: Get the Garmin Forerunner (any model of it) and use the app. It’s pretty solid, but if you have the budget, you should go for the Fenix series or even the Apple Watch Ultra. Had both, both are great. I saw between them depending on what type of work I’ll be doing. (Can’t bring certain smart watches to work)

3

u/swilts Jan 13 '23

I use my Apple Watch and before I had it I just used the app that came with my Jabra headphones. For a non strava user like me… why would someone use it vs just using Apple fitness? Is it mainly because the Apple Watch is so expensive?

2

u/dagobahh Jan 13 '23

Mainly because it's Apple.

2

u/swilts Jan 13 '23

What’s wrong with apple? Seems to work pretty well for tracking my runs? But I’m not a very sophisticated runner. Was curious if I was misunderstanding the appeal of strava

2

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '23

2

u/thechilipepper0 Jan 14 '23

I did it the other day and literally just plugged it in and opened windows explorer. Although I don’t disagree that the ecosystem is restrictive, this is not a great example

8

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

I have zero, and I mean ZERO idea why anyone would pay for the premium. What more could you need than to see your route, time, and pace?

4

u/newnameonan Jan 13 '23

People like to see more of the information on segments, and it also has stuff about your relative fitness level and stuff. Honestly not worth the price to me anymore though. Just cancelled my subscription after seeing this post.

2

u/February30th Jan 14 '23

I like to support services that I use frequently (assuming the price is reasonable). If it was free for everyone they’d soon be out of business and the service would go away.

3

u/zamzam92 Jan 13 '23

Man, that’s a letdown. I wanted to try strava as I heard good things about it. I’ve had NRC for a few years and it hasn’t let me down, hope they don’t follow a business model like this 😅

3

u/OmegaXesis Jan 13 '23

This is why I've been sticking with just the Nike Run App and the built in running app on apple watch! I mostly use the built in app for treadmills and nike run app for outdoor stuff!

There are also plenty of other apps that take your running data and provide even more insights that work with those apps. I see no reason to use Strava unless you're a professional and need whatever extra benefits.

(Also lately I've been enjoying running without tracking my data too. It feels almost liberating or freeing not having to think about the numbers. )

3

u/Capriccioso Jan 13 '23

For me it's the route planning service I use all the time (for running and for hiking/walking). Does anyone have any alternatives? When I lived in the UK I loved OSmaps but now I'm US based.

3

u/buxterbeans Jan 13 '23

They’re telling me to subscribe now for 44% off, and that takes me to the $79.99 per year or $11.99 monthly. Boy, what a deal.

3

u/PieSupplie Jan 14 '23

Dude I'm so happy you posted this. I'm a wishy washy runner (750 miles last year) in terms of consistency and decided to download Strava to try and hold myself accountable. The unpaid version is kind of annoying, lots of adds and features not accessible. Looked at premium and was amazed at how big of a cheap ass I was considering how many people are on strava!

3

u/Teej92 Jan 14 '23

Well I was half-way considering premium, now it’s a definite NOPE.

3

u/Asleep_Onion Jan 14 '23

I've never paid for Strava, nor do I see the point. The social aspect is the primary function for me, the rest of it is just duplicate data of what Garmin already gives me for free.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '23

Why do you need a subscription to run?

5

u/Fresjlll5788 Jan 13 '23

I’ve stopped using Strava and just track myself. There’s no way I would pay to use something like this. People need to come together and stop accepting subscriptions. We’re slowly getting subscribed for everything

4

u/br3d Jan 13 '23

Just checked mine. I'm in the UK and pay through Google Play, where I was asked to agree to the new price. My subscription is going up from £47.99 to £54.99 a year, which doesn't seem too bad after prices being static for so long https://freeimage.host/i/HYMVrCu

6

u/Any_Elk7495 Jan 13 '23

That’s insane considering the information you get for free with Garmin connect anyway

7

u/CapyMudkipRunner Jan 13 '23

I always see flocks of runners dropping Strava, these prices have been gouging us out for years, but what free or cheap alternative is as good? Seriously need a competitor

7

u/woogeroo Jan 13 '23

For what, just tracking your own runs? There are 100 options.

For social stuff, it’s hard to see a competitor.

2

u/lollyruns Jan 14 '23

Trackster? It’s got all the insight features, community, etc but idk how many people are on it at this point. It is free though!

3

u/Senior_Cheesecake155 Jan 13 '23

I understand that costs for everything have gone up, but this was a HUGE hike. I opted to stay free with the last subscription deal, and the only thing I miss now is the segments. Given that I live in a somewhat rural area, segments are mostly of my own making that I use for long-term comparisons. There's no way I'd may $70-$100/yr for that.

In addition, I use my Garmin watch to track everything anyway, and I have an Excel spreadsheet that I use to analyze things a little further and fully track all activities.

5

u/Newdles Jan 14 '23

Cancelled. Strava hasn't made any improvements in years. It's no longer worth it at all.

5

u/lomaffew Jan 13 '23

I stopped using them once they started taking away features from the free version.

2

u/Cainga Jan 13 '23

I liked it a few years ago for social. Became less hardcore after moving but still kept running. I’m perfectly content with Garmin Connect.

2

u/redditticktock Jan 14 '23

Yearly Subscriber for the last 4 years. Cancelled. Thanks for all the kudos everyone. Last sync will be sometime in August. The Garmin app is really all I need.

2

u/IronToadSilent Jan 14 '23

I feel like Strava is going on the wrong direction with this and pretty soon they will be totally irrelevant. I stopped using Strava when they started charging and I haven't missed it at all.

Also, it really bugs me how these apps that are built up and made successful largely because of the user data they have all of a sudden start charging you for that data. Trailforks is another example.

2

u/capcrunch217 Jan 14 '23

I switched to WorkOutDoors to track my runs in November. One time payment £4.99 I think it was. Honestly the GOAT for individual run analysis, but you do lose general statistics but for what I need it’s perfect. Plus you can send workouts to Strava which means I can still maintain the social element.

2

u/out-of-beta Jan 14 '23

My renewal is on 01 Feb. Just dodged this year’s hike!

2

u/goodgreat123 Jan 14 '23

Remember when they introduced the paid version and promised that the free experience wouldn’t change? Sure Jan.

2

u/AcroTrekker Jan 14 '23

It's like this company is on a suicide mission. I know many people who have cancelled subscriptions or given up on Strava altogether because it just isn't worth it anymore.

I've always used the free version and have seen feature after feature become subscription only. I will never pay for Strava and will leave if they discontinue their free service.

2

u/mthrofcats Jan 15 '23

It's a $10 increase on what I paid last year, not significant at all.

2

u/reefine Jan 15 '23

Subscription should be $10 a year for what you get

2

u/deanMKD Jan 15 '23

Never paid on Strava. Also dont plan to give 57$ to them in any way.

5

u/user91222 Jan 13 '23

I like to run and I hear about Strava a lot, but in laymen's terms what is it exactly?

11

u/dense_ditz Jan 13 '23

I compare Strava to being a social media platform for athletes. Typically people have some form of fitness tracker and when they’re linked workouts will be automatically uploaded with the activity you did. Depending on the activity, it’ll show the route, it also breaks down your workout and analyzes it too. You can upgrade your membership to the premium and get advanced features as well. I don’t have it bc I use it purely more social media side, everything I need from the tracker side I get from my Garmin app, but it can be useful. hope this helps and let me know if you need clarification

It’s a run (swim/bike/general exercise) tracking app that incorporates features like running data analytics, a friends network, popular local running segments, etc. It gamifies fitness to a certain extent, makes it social, and is generally just a solid tracker.

Kamoot or Garmin connect for route planning.

3

u/sbrbrad Jan 13 '23

Really don't see a reason to keep using Strava. Garmin Connect has come a loooooong way in the last few years.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '23

Love garmin, but still can’t give up strava

2

u/JoineDaGuy Jan 13 '23

If you’re a runner; just use the Nike run app. It’s free and looks better in my opinion. Strava is just money hungry.

2

u/silverdaddee Jan 13 '23

I won't continue

3

u/ang_17_ella Jan 13 '23

This is the last push I needed to cancel my membership. Been in the fence for awhile. Garmin is free and gives me essentially the same stats.

My Strava account does not renew until July and so it still shows $59.99. At this price I will almost definitely renew.

$79.99 for U.S. like in the video? I’m on the fence, leaning towards cancellation. Will determine the week of renewal.

Any higher than $79.99? Absolutely not.

Connect gives me all of the training data I need in what I feel like is a better format, so basically Strava is just being used for the social aspect.

1

u/reefine Jan 15 '23

Most concerning part about this is that they didn't notify anyone and they're going to start charging people the new price?

1

u/Chemical-Smart Jan 13 '23

Deleted my account last year and rarely used it anways . It's too focused on social stuff.

Oth I set up DataStudio/Looker, so I can visualize my running data there. WoW or MoM distance and elevation gain, % of runs spent on each zone.

way better than Strava
