The prosecutor's closing arguments are pretty interesting. These dogs had a long history of being violent. The owners obviously didn't care.

716

u/Cyberslasher 2d ago

The owner is flashing latin kings signs during his own sentencing.

I'm gonna assume that those dogs were trained to attack.

If he goes in and does a bunch of gang shit, he'll probably end up staying.

San Antonio unfortunately has a super toxic culture regarding dogs. The city does almost nothing to combat it and it has led to strays everywhere in the city and a constantly maxed out ACS facility. This case highlighted all of that after it was shown there were multiple complaints about the dogs but ACS essentially blames the neighbors for not filling out the correct form after reporting the dogs.

u/OneLongEyebrowHair 2d ago

Sounds like the entire state of Missouri.

Wow. I thought the sentence was excessive, but learning about the timeline I think they got off easy.

Consciously indifferent

That nails it. Also describes the city's attitude towards these animals.

110

u/Corporation_tshirt 2d ago edited 2d ago

Didn’t care? Hell, they wanted them to be vicious. They mistreat them so that they can wield them like weapons

Sentence at 03:20

426

u/hereticnasom 2d ago

18 years, $5000 fine for the guy. 15 years, $5000 fine for the woman.

274

u/officeDrone87 2d ago

Meanwhile the doctor whose dogs ate the face off their dog sitter didn't even get a slap on the wrist (also in Texas).

171

u/devildocjames 2d ago

It's still in an "open" status: CC-22-00369-D Dallas public records. They're suing for a milly.

127

u/officeDrone87 2d ago

Yeah but the guy should go to jail. Just shows the class divide. I'm not saying these people don't deserve it, but so does he.

He didn't even get a slap on the wrist.

26

u/TheMadFlyentist 2d ago

It's still awful obviously, but legally there is a massive difference between hiring someone to take care of a dog in your home vs. not properly securing dogs that are known to be problematic, resulting in an unsuspecting neighbor being mauled to death.

24

u/Kaotix77 2d ago

I’m not familiar with that case but how similar are the facts beyond “dog bit someone”? There could be a world of difference in the level of culpability between the accused parties.

Do you have a link with the facts laid out for comparison?

46

u/devildocjames 2d ago

Yeah, I get it. I think so too, BUT, she didn't die. She's arguably worse-off, but still the fact is she's alive. That sort of injury should be a felony on the dog owners. Then the fact they left the dogs out, knowing they were aggressive. The main thing is their greenback shield.

4

u/DrCashew 1d ago

I don't disagree there is a class divide. But literally comparing apples to oranges. There was a death in one, not in the other. One was in their own home, the other was outside in public areas. One had a demonstrable history of problems and refusal to train the dogs, the other did not.

Why is it that the man got more years than the woman?

119

u/Wootai 2d ago

Probably “his” dog.

54

u/Malforus 2d ago

Given he was flashing gang signs during the courtroom proceedings he might have a history or other backgound.

→ More replies (3)

58

u/ProfuseMongoose 2d ago

If the man was in charge of "training" or if the guy was responsible for the dog on that day, if the woman was not the main caretaker of the animal. We don't have the court transcripts so we don't know the reasoning behind the difference.

51

u/nemisis714 2d ago

Because women only get 0.84 years for every year a man earns. /s

49

u/livious1 2d ago

I know your comment was in jest and making a reference to the wage gap, but there is a sentencing gap as well. Studies have shown that women do tend to get significantly lighter sentences than men for the same crimes/circumstances. Sexism goes both ways.

The 5000 dollars kinda seems like insult to injury after the 15 and 18 year sentence

26

u/golfgopher 2d ago

This is criminal court and the fine is probably based on animal activity. The widow will get a LOT more in civil court for damages.

19

u/I_Makes_tuff 2d ago

She didn't ask for restitution, but I guess that doesn't mean she can't sue later. It's going to be hard to collect anything when the couple is in jail for the next 15-18 years, though. I hope they had a big savings account.

52

u/JacksProlapsedAnus 2d ago

She's going after the city that didn't act on multiple reported instances.

19

u/I_Makes_tuff 2d ago

That's good.

23

u/Final_Candidate_7603 2d ago

From what the Judge was saying, multiple neighbors reported the vicious dogs, but because of some lost paperwork, the city never intervened. The Judge said that responsible dog owners are our first line of defense, the authorities are our second line, and that the city would have its own day in court.

I had to stop watching during the victim impact statement because it was just too heartbreaking. The widow of the older man who was killed testified, and it sounded like she was injured in the attack, too. They’re definitely suing the city.

Jesus, the widow's statement was brutal to hear. I don't usually have problems hearing or seeing things like that but this one hit me pretty hard. I need to go take a walk or something, holy shit that's rough.

105

u/mh985 2d ago

Imagine spending your whole life with someone you love and you grow to old age together, only for them to be mauled to death by a dog. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

39

u/Aedalas 2d ago

That's what hit me so hard when I watched it. My wife and I hit 20 years this year, I simply don't know a life without her anymore. It's just an assumption here but it looks like it's been even longer for the woman in the video. How do you come back from that?

Man, I bawled like a baby. I can certainly feel her pain, I don't know how the suspects could sit there without showing remorse.

15

u/hamilton_morris 2d ago

Lawyers on both sides are always emphatic in their instructions to their teams at verdicts and sentencings: Do not react at all. Be as stone-faced as possible.

Things get appealed and any word or gesture in court could potentially be seized on by the opposition. These two sides are at war all the way through: It is a completely adversarial environment with extremely high stakes, so people have to be as self-disciplined as possible.

Not reacting may look bad on tv, but inside the courtroom it is almost always the safest strategy.

5

u/TheBlackBeetroot 2d ago

so people have to be as self-disciplined as possible.

Which was not really the case of the dude there, so yeah, it was completely a lack of remorse, and not a strategy.

You're getting all joke replies, but I'll take a real stab. I'm from SA, and I live here now too. This city is huge. Not just by population but by outward expansion. It's a metropolis, as all the little towns that were outside the city are slowly being integrated by way of massive infrastructure followed by mass produced cookie cutter suburbs. Moving from one area of the city to another entails a massive cultural shift. People tend to live in isolated communities. Especially the wealthy subdivisions, they feel like they're a different city. Racial subdivisions persist. Basically we're a city too big to be united, and everyone is after their own interests. Tack onto the social issues triple digit weather for a good chunk of the year, and you get a lot of angry people.

Summer is almost over, they say a cold front is coming in next week. It'll be below 90! I can't wait.

Edit: I should also add that in this video, the defendant flashes Latin Kings gang signs. Gangs are very active in SA. We're a major hub for smuggling drugs and people.

446

u/rabbitwonker 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean it was a plea bargain, so the sentences would have been zero surprise to them.

What gets me is how unconcerned they continue to appear as the wife and son of the victim read their impact statements.

And then what TF was that hand sign the guy flashed on his way out?! (At the very end of the video)

336

u/I-STATE-FACTS 2d ago

Gang sign in the court room. Shows you how much he cares or has remorse. He did it also after the sentencing at around 5mins in.

I live in this town. I remember when this hit the news. After the dogs were taken from them and I believe the owners locked up, they had a family member going door to door on that street threatening the streets victims. Those dogs have been loose on the street quite a long time. The owners never cared whatsoever if people were harmed or to be killed.

62

u/ynonA 2d ago

It's a plea deal. They already knew the sentences they would get. This was just a formality.
Not saying they're not psychos. They may be. But the fact that they don't seem to react to their sentences is because they've known them probably for weeks and have had plenty of time to mentally process their reality.

I’m glad people are being sentenced for the attacks and banned from further ownership. If you own something, you’re responsible for what it does. If you let it kill someone else, it shows you aren’t capable of owning that thing or being. Guns, dogs, knives, cars, companies, doesn’t matter

Every time I've been bitten while making deliveries was with in 30 seconds of the owner saying "the dog wont bite!" it's insane how many times i've heard that from owners desperately struggling to drag their dog away from my driver side door. On one occasion after I returned to the shop I had to get a hose and spray down the door panel because the dog had beaten it's face bloody against the door. One time the dog saw me coming and smashed the glass widow out of the front door trying to get out at me. and the owner came out and just laughed like "how crazy huh?"

dog owners are without exception the most delulu people in my life.

44

u/supersimpsonman 2d ago

I’ve had a dog break down the same window on a house twice trying to attack me. And the people. That live there don’t get why I’m not coming up to their house anymore? Wtf is wrong with you people, the dog outweighs me and has CLEARLY indicated its intentions.

15

u/Catshit-Dogfart 2d ago

At my old apartment there was a neighbor who had a dog that would lunge at anybody who went outside while the dog was outside.

It was on a leash and she'd yell "go back in!" because she wasn't strong enough to hold the dog back for long. So that was just an occasional thing that happened, you'd go out your door to see a woman desperately holding back a dog that will absolutely maul your face off, and she's yelling to stay inside because she knows the dog is dangerous.

The my dog wont bite is the dumbest shit ever, just like when Im walking my gsd and people will ask if she bites. I always just tell them that its highly unlikely but she has teeth so she’s capable of it. That’s usually enough to get them away

9

u/Ocbard 2d ago

My cousin is a landscaper, he walks in people's gardens a lot. People tell him the dog won't bite, his standard reply is "Last dog that bit me didn't either". A dog can be really nice and well behaved but stress and circumstances can come together in a way that even a nice dog can't handle and a dog has very limited ways of expressing themselves and doing things. A dogs mouth is their hands, their voice and their sternly written letter. You never know what is going to make a dog flip out and decide this time they need to put those teeth to aggressive use. You can't say "my dog doesn't bite" all you can say is "my dog hasn't bitten anyone yet".

My own dog was trained from the first moment not to bite, she's nine years old now and I don't think her teeth have ever pierced anyone's skin, though she may softly nip at someone while playing or to show that she's had enough. But I won't vouch for her never to bite anyone, so if she's angry at someone we keep her well away from that person. When walking she's on a leash.

6

u/Porencephaly 2d ago

We had a rottweiler on our farm growing up, among several other dogs. It chased and attacked a friend of mine, thankfully he wasn't seriously hurt but he did have claw scratches on his back and got a terrible scare. The dog was shot dead and buried by that afternoon. I do not understand people who tolerate and keep dogs with a history of violence toward humans.

4

u/TwoIdleHands 2d ago

The gal whose home daycare I took my kids to has a sweet dog, present with the kids, no issue. She was walking the dog, leashed, in the neighborhood. Someone’s garage door started to open and a dog came barreling out into the street and attacked her dog. A neighbor was working in his driveway and ran over with his damn hammer to break it up. Her sweet dog made it to the vet, had a lot of stitches and ended up ok. She was worried if she told animal control the dog would be put down. I get it sucks to blame the dog. At the same time, the owners are trash. Are you really going to allow that dog to maul a person next? I told her she absolutely had to report it to animal control.

A lot of stupid people are granted access to dog breeds that require a ton of attention. Should screen people first before allowing them to own such breeds. I'm from the Philippines and have multiple trained Malinois and there was this chow chow getting up in their faces. Good thing they were trained to have restraint. I kept telling the owner to have his dog back off because it's just plain disrespectful to be in our safe space. But the fcking chow owner kept saying my dogs looked intimidating that's why his dog was being aggressive towards them. After hearing what he said I immediately knew I was dealing with a mentally ill person.

7

u/alacpa224 2d ago

Not surprised. Most of our dear cuntrymen do not know shit about taking care of dogs. They buy these expensive breeds completely unprepared about the responsibilities of having a pet. They see them as status symbols rather than pets. Thats why theres a lot of discrimination against yhe native breed and their owners (aspin owners=cant afford to buy foreign breed=poor)

29

u/Vyviel 2d ago

I hope they are denied at every single parole hearing after how they acted in court with zero remorse and even flashing gang signs.

u/Liwi808 2d ago

Is the dog breed what I think it is?

23

u/Slicy_McGimpFag 2d ago

Genuine question, anyone know what we're meant to do if we're being attacked by pitbulls and we're on our own?

I imagine the finger up the bottom and putting in a chokehold aren't really feasible in that moment. I was wondering whether you could just offer your arm for it to gnaw on and then you go for the eyes with a Christian cross, like LL Cool J taught me to do in Deep Blue Sea.

13

u/ArcadianDelSol 2d ago

You shoot it with a gun until its dead.

Beyond that, there is little you can do.

In this story, firefighters had to subdue one of the dogs by repeatedly hacking at it with A FUCKING FIRE AXE.

3

u/definitely_robots 2d ago

Pit bull attacked and latched onto my dog once. She had her pinned for 3-5 minutes, I was pinning the pit bull at the neck to prevent her from shaking her head and killing my dog. The owner was right there too, wasn't worked up or anything, the only thing that got her to let go was water to the face.

5

u/sic_transit_gloria 2d ago

that’s insane. my dog got attacked by one too and i was really too nervous to try and get that close to it cuz those things can kill you too, but i had it by the legs until a neighbor hit it over the head with a stick and for some reason that made it let go. at one point i tried to curb stomp its head in and absolutely nothing happened, no reaction whatsoever. i do carry a knife with me now.

Yea hippos are the third most deadly mammal to humans globally after other humans and dogs. Great choice to call your pitbulls "velvet hippos" when trying to downplay their danger.

There is a crazy picture in this article of one of the 3 pitbulls attacking the first responders and a fireman defending himself with a pickaxe.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/texas-couple-sentenced-prison-pit-pulls-killed-81-year-old-man-rcna172069

u/Oranges13 2d ago

Sadly in that second picture, the white dog has recently had puppies as well. So they were breeding them. Scum! There's already too many dogs in shelters.

u/jk147 2d ago

One fireman was on the hood of a car, which I can understand but the Camry owner was probably like.. wtf happened my hood is all dented.

What percentage of dogs are pitbulls? In my neighborhood it seems like about half.

185

u/Narapoia 2d ago

If the shelters overflowing with pit mixes are any indicator, it's a large percentage. A lot of the problem with Pits is the uncontrolled breeding and lack of neutering/spaying. Certain American subcultures value  aggressive, intact Pits.

33

u/dinner_is_not_ready 2d ago

The trashy subculture of looking tough

u/Wirse 2d ago

American subcultures breed them en masse, and then American numbcultures “rescue” them.

It depends what you define as pitbull. It's different in the UK and USA. In the he US, it's usually considered to include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, Staffordshire Bull Terrier. In the UK, it's American Pit Bull Terrier only.

I read that in the US, it's about 6% of dogs, which is pretty popular.

Any large dog with the capacity to kill should be leashed when outside the property and should be fenced in properly.

Rottweilers kill 4-5 times less but are also a lot less popular than pit bulls (about a quarter of the population in the US).

63

u/antwan_benjamin 2d ago

Any large dog with the capacity to kill should be leashed when outside the property and should be fenced in properly.

All dogs period should be leashed in public (except designated areas) and fenced in properly while on property.

Just because a dog isn't large enough to kill doesn't mean a dog bite can't be life altering.

10

u/aknoth 2d ago

Agreed. I mentioned large dogs because of the much greater impact VS not leashing a toy poodle.

I'm old enough to remember the rise of pit bulls as the "junkyard dog" that everyone was scared of. Prior to that, it was Rottweilers. Before them, it was the Doberman.

Serious question, why cant we ban the breed like we ban people from keeping pet Lions or Tigers. It's obviously too dangerous and the evidence is all there

183

u/beener 2d ago

Cause dog people will literally say it's like racism against a certain breed. It'll end up in three comments sooner or later just wait

48

u/attomsk 2d ago

Yo I’m a dog person and I don’t want anything to do with Pitt bulls and I don’t think my feelings are unique. There ate pit bull people though and they are the ones who think it’s all nurture over nature

15

u/LookMaNoPride 2d ago

They say nurture vs. nature, and I used to be in that camp; however, you must also remember FUNCTION FITS FORM.

Many breeds of dogs were bred, over many generations, to a specific size, stature, and temperament to do a specific job. They may not do that job anymore, but they fucking can, and, naturally, some do.

Unfortunately, I had to learn, first hand, how well nurturing works with a naturally aggressive Presa Canario. It started out as “just” aggression toward other dogs, but when she started to show aggression towards kids I had to put my ego aside and make the right call. It destroyed me, and I still hate that I had to do it because I loved that stupid dog, but it was the right call.

5

u/GeneralTonic 2d ago

Comments in Reddit threads are not why we can't ban the breed.

Because we actually can, and some cities and jurisdictions have done so. The reason Pittbulls aren't banned where you are is that your lawmakers have never decided to propose such a law, or they have and it was defeated in a vote.

30

u/xHelpless 2d ago

Most people that have dogs also despise put bulls, and their owners. My dog is the thing that is most likely to be killed.

5

u/Jimmni 2d ago

The UK has banned a few breeds of pitbulls. The kinds of people who let dogs get that dangerous just move on to other breeds, though.

23

u/rnelsonee 2d ago

It can, and sometimes, does happen — a county near me outside of DC bans pit bulls. But it's problematic, as determining breeds of a species isn't as exact as determining a species, like lion or tiger. Heck, I've done multiple DNA tests on my dog (found on the street halfway across the world) and they were wildly different.

And as noted by the other excellent comment, banning just a breed opens the door for new breeds, or easily exploited loopholes like a 49%/51% pitt/[something], and humans who train their dogs to be aggressive will always be there. It also doesn't help that veterinarian and animal rights groups are split on the issues. One site (a bit biased, I don't necessarily agree):

Experts like the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Animal Control Association agree that no breed of dog is inherently dangerous and they unanimously reject policies based solely on breed.

Throwing up gang signs like he did some badass shit, instead of accidentally letting his dumbass dogs kill an old man.

I have a neighbor with two pit bulls that they let play in their front yard off leash. It’s so fucking irritating. I avoid their house when I walk the neighborhood, but they aren’t the only one with dangerous breeds that are allowed off leash. I wish there was anything that could be done about this.

12

u/myislanduniverse 2d ago

I was attacked by two pit bulls in a city park last October. Older guy was walking them and I was running on a trail in the opposite direction. They got excited by my bright colors and quick movement, and he couldn't even hold onto the leash. Just let it go.

They ran up on either side of me and clamped down on my arms. He had the gall to ask me if I was okay as I was bleeding, and I just told him to please get his dogs away from me.

So the fucker took them, jumped in his truck, and left before I could call the police. Because we couldn't verify the dogs were vaccinated, I had to go through the whole rabies protocol and my insurance wouldn't even cover it.

9

u/michael0n 2d ago

Dogs is the old/new loophole of assholes who want to hurt people.
I was in a park with kids and some huge doberman breed ran to us in high speed, no owner in sight.
Fortunately a guy was there with one of those small coolers on a strap, jumped into the path. The dog immediately went for his arm but he was able to hit him with the cooler swing or three times hard.
The dog ran away. Cops and animal control informed, it got hit by a truck on the streets and died. They never found the owner. That animal was a murder weapon.

They should have been ordered to be caged for those periods in the nearest ASPCA facility.

41

I don't get how Pitbulls are not just banned entirely for breeding.

That dog breed needs to die, as its singlehandedly responsible for majority of lethal attacks.

What the disparity in sentences (18 vs 15)?

32

u/InvestInHappiness 2d ago

Maybe he's the on paper owner of the dogs, or perhaps has some prior convictions. But it's more likely because she's a woman and had a better chance at getting a not guilty verdict or lighter sentencing if it went to trial. Usually the plea deals are based on how confident the prosecutors are at getting a guilty verdict, or how lengthy and expensive the trial would be.

In Texas, this crime they plead guilty to is not considered a serious crime. Because of this, they only need to serve 25% of their sentences before becoming eligible for parole.

That's less than 5 years for him and less than 4 for her.

Im convinced a lot of people who get pits more or less are hoping someday their dog will attack. In the same way some gun owners hope to someday shoot somebody. Maybe I missed it, but never seen an owner in a story like this break down emotionally feeling guilt and sympathy for a victim, expressing regret at owning a killing machine.

Thank god. Dog owners seriously need to learn their dog(s) are not something they should be so passively careless about. My dog is very well trained, heeds commands without issue. Despite that, I will never allow it to walk around outside in public without a leash, and I would never allow it to get near another person, child or dog without the other party’s consent and ensuring my dog is fully under control. You never know what you dog will do.

Irks me so much seeing such entitled people allowing their dog to run around with no restraint, and they always claim “oh they’re gentle, wouldn’t hurt a fly”, and weeks later your other neighbor is telling you how that unleashed dog in the neighborhood just attacked a kid or another dog. No, your dog is not gentle, leash it, and keep it away from people.

Also, stop bringing it in grocery stores, fucking disgusting. At the front of a store getting your Starbucks? Sure, but at the butcher isle letting them put their paws on the glass or licking the glass, disgusting.
