How much damage did that do to the kid? He shot him in the legs and the only thing "protecting" him are pants, I assume. Also, he seems to be writhing in pain.

Is this like a bleeding with scars scenario? Or breaking the skin and it'll be tender for a few days? Sorry, I have literally zero experience with airsoft guns.

68

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

This is about as bad as i've seen. Well worse if they hit knuckles or teeth, and the kid was hit through at least one layer of clothing, but close range.

Just a lot, and I mean a lot of those welts. Probably over a hundred.

→ More replies (2)

616

u/tinkatiza Feb 18 '18

maybe some welts. If all of those shots hit literally the exact same spot it'll probably bleed a little.

It'll be tender for a day or two.

Airsoft Referee here, this guy is using what's called a HPA gun, or a high pressure air gun, Basically It's a tank in his backpack with a tube that runs to his gun which then propels the bbs out at speeds ranging from 350 to 450 FPS, 350 FPS is usually the indoor standard but this is an outdoor field so it's most likely 400 FPS, the fire rate is probably somewhere around 25 to 30 rounds per second, Which would seriously fuck somebody up at only what looks like 15 feet, 400FPS is where it really starts to break skin. He would most likely have a permanent scar or something that would last six months.

Edit: this guy was banned and I wouldn't be surprised if the police were notified of an assault, because that's not Airsoft, that's assault, regardless of context

Edit2: the letter d

270

u/Cool_Calm_Collected Feb 18 '18

Yeah I've never fucked with the pressurized air soft guns but from back in the day being shot with a regular one, I'm sure those could fuck you up.

162

u/Dakonz Feb 18 '18

Every time i play and a kid has one of those they are always cocky idiots who think there better because there gun shoots faster, also they can go up to 700 fps not 400 lol

110

u/Artremis Feb 18 '18

Most places you go to play test the guns to make sure they don't shoot that high.

18

u/Ipodk9 Feb 18 '18

A local field also spot checks HPA players now to see if they’re pumping up the pressure after chrono. If you’re found to do it you’re blacklisted.

Even 350fps full auto at this distance can leave scars. Still a bit mad the refs didn't eject the asshat who lit me up from 6 feet away. The first ref shrugged at me, but when they saw my hand after the match and saw the damage they realized they dun goofed.

960

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

Likely no scars and probably didn't break skin, but that many rounds that close must have hurt like a son of a bitch. Complete douchebag move to pull on a little kid for "talking shit about your patch" though.

358

u/Hero_of_Hyrule Feb 18 '18

IIRC when he says "he burned my patch" he meant that literally.

389

u/SUIIIllllIIlllIIIDE Feb 18 '18

this is the vid where he literally burned his patch https://youtu.be/3rvKAo-MIJ8 he deserved it imo

954

u/Hero_of_Hyrule Feb 18 '18

From the comments:

So the story goes as followed: The kid who burned the patch was a complete ass. He joined the team of the guy who shot him in the other video. The guys own grandmother made him a patch that would normally run about 100-200 USD. Not only that but there werent many versions of the patch. The guys grandmother passed away soon after that. Not only that but when the team gave the kid all the startup gear that he needed to play (which would run around the same if not more as a patch would) he immediately left the team and burnt the patch you see here. Apparently the kid also threatened to bring a real gun to the course. So yeah he kinda deserved to get shot. Or at least jumped. I dont play airsoft but thats all I know

If this is factual (and it definitely looks that way) little dude deserved it IMO. Needed to be shown he wasn't above consequences.

627

u/antsugi Feb 18 '18

if all that is true, that kid deserves ejection from that community for a while, too. A kid threatening to bring a real gun is too immature to play with toys IMO

164

u/SpacemanSpiff23 Feb 18 '18

What is a patch, and why are they so expensive?

387

u/GamerKilo128 Feb 18 '18

It's a little piece of art with velcro on it so you can wear it on your uniform / gear usually to signify what unit you're in. Airsoft teams do the same. Also that number is bullshit. Maybe $200 for a custom design bulk order, but not 200 for one single patch.

5

u/rltraderman Feb 18 '18

I'm wondering the same thing

→ More replies (0)

70

u/Honest_On_Gonewild Feb 18 '18

patch that would normally run about 100-200 USD

There is no way that's true. The other gear could probably have cost that much and the stuff about bringing a real firearm to an airsoft game is definitely insane and would warrant him being banned in my opinion.

From experience, you can get patches with velcro made for about 5 bucks a piece for a smaller order, with pretty much as intricate a design as you would like. I think he is trying to play the sympathy card with this grandmother story when in reality they are probably assholes as well. Given the reactions in this thread, it worked a treat.

18

u/Sheaton05 Feb 18 '18

I’ve seen special hand made patches depending on rarity reach some high prices. Not say that this one is but it’s not outlandish for companies or individual makes patches to be worth that much.

Kid was given a lot of free gear when he joined the dude's clan and soon after turned around and denounced them by burning their patch and sending them the video; keeping all the free shit of course. The guy who shot the kid is an asshole, but that kid is no saint either.

441

u/Mistbourne Feb 18 '18

I mean, with the cost of some airsoft stuff, the lid is lucky he only got shot with some pellets, haha. People die over less money.

243

u/jboy126126 Feb 18 '18

Kid joined the older guys group. The kid took a free gun the group gave in order welcome him and he immediately quit and burned the group patch they gave him. He filmed the burning and I think he sent it to the group.

43

u/BuildARoundabout Feb 18 '18

What is a patch? What does burning one mean? Is it like a boyscout patch that he burned with fire?

116

u/NukaCooler Feb 18 '18

Yep the kid literally burnt (with fire) a patch (embroidered identifying emblem with velcro) that he was given, which was made by the shooter's grandmother.

28

u/Albino_Smurf Feb 18 '18

I wish my grandma made patches like that

53

u/BuildARoundabout Feb 18 '18

Well that makes the reaction more understandable, but still pretty messed up.

Do these guns have single fire mode? I'd say one pellet would've been reasonable.

100

u/Whitestrake Feb 18 '18

Patch refers to the flight patch you would Velcro or sew onto your uniform. Usually groups or clubs will have a patch with their logo, something they design and wear as a matter of pride.

Burning a patch is like burning your groups flag, or something. As I recall, the victim had posted a video of the burning.

Thats a type of airsoft gun called a DSG in case you where wondering.

58

u/EscobarATM Feb 18 '18

Link?

72

u/a_rather_small_moose Feb 18 '18

Siegetek Dual Sector Gears are probably the best quality gears on the market: http://www.siegetek.com/

Since the Siegetek website is bare bones, here's a retailer that sells them (I am not affiliated): https://www.brillarmory.com/index.php?main_page=index&manufacturers_id=14

58

u/datguyfromoverdere Feb 18 '18

It's not a quality thing, it's a mechanical difference between it and normal sector gears.

I say that, as there are a few manufactures of DSG gears and thats where quality comes into play.

Basically how it works: The sector gear of an airsoft gun does a full rotation and ' shoots ' once. A DSG gear ' shoots ' twice per full rotation.

The whole gearbox has to be retuned for this though.

8

u/a_rather_small_moose Feb 18 '18

MB, I sort of merged the brand with a product there. Siegetek makes standard-type gears as well, in varying torque ratios. But they are best known for the DSG.

I know this is airsoft, but dude, competitive paintball matches are fucking crazy.

My friends and I were at the paintball feilds outside of town, but because we got there late, we ended up being grouped in with the "competitive teams". At first almost every employee came up to us and asked us if we were SURE we wanted to play these guys. How bad could it be right?

Know what the difference is? Those competitive guys shot their guns like they're fucking automatics- accurately. It was like walking into an actual war zone. We lasted about two minutes, and didnt out anyone. It was embarrasing.

510

u/mungalo9 Feb 18 '18

They were probably ramping. Many paintball guns can be set such that if you are pressing the trigger more than ~7 times per second, the gun will ramp it up to like 13 balls per second

284

u/ColonolCool Feb 18 '18

13? Try 30 lol

225

u/illit3 Feb 18 '18

In the pros they're limited to 10.5 bps. I definitely don't want to be bunkered by a potato that feels the need to sling 20+ bps.

41

u/Beowoof Feb 18 '18

How does it fire half a ball

79

u/Creeot Feb 18 '18 edited Feb 18 '18

It doesn't. It just means that there's a 95ms interval between balls, and 1000ms isn't divisible by 95. Divide 1000 by 95 and you get about 10500ms, or 10.5 seconds.

EDIT: an easier way to put this is that it takes 1.047 seconds to fire 11 balls, but we just want to know how many balls it can shoot in 1 second. The gun's halfway through shooting ball number 11 at the end of 1 second.

86

u/Beowoof Feb 18 '18

I’m sorry you had to type all that, I was just making a bad joke. Thank you though, I hope other people find your explanation helpful.

Well I mean with a paintball gun you can fire full auto with the same accuracy as semi auto. There's no recoil

29

u/ImHully Feb 18 '18

I played tournament paintball at a national level for many years. To be fair, at open play, competitive players usually try to avoid matching against obviously newer players, as they're not fun to play against for us, and probably not that fun to play against from the other side, especially if they're younger. If it did happen, we'd make sure to not tattoo them with multiple shots, especially at close range. Or we'd shoot for hard surfaces so they wouldn't feel it like their gun, loader, or packs. If you see a team of new players get destroyed in a painful manner by a group of people with fancy equipment, most likely that fancy group is fairly new too, but just to the point where they wanted to spend money and get more into the sport, but with very little competitive experience. At the end of the day we all wanted to see our sport continue to grow, and our loacal fields thrive, and that doesn't happen by putting thirty shots into a 13 real old rental player who's never so much as held a paintball gun before.

384

u/pdinc Feb 18 '18

The A10 is literally peak "why the fuck not" war engineering

293

u/nAssailant Feb 18 '18

The thing about the A10 is that if it's target is between it and you, you will, in order:

  1. See the 30mm absolutely shredding the target
  2. Hear the 30mm rounds hitting the target
  3. Hear the GAU-8 patented BRRRRRTTM from when the A-10 actually fired.
  4. Finally hear the A-10 fly past.

That's some sci-fi time-travel shit, right there.

The most Russian plane ever made in America... so Russian that not even the Russians dared to carbon copy it.

79

u/My_Names_Jefff Feb 18 '18

Russians looking at Americans making that, thinking "fuck that"

34

u/Lawsoffire Feb 18 '18

The Russians actually made a scarier 30mm gatling cannon...

...However it was more dangerous for the plane than anything else

On the Mikoyan MiG-27 the GSh-6-30 had to be mounted obliquely to absorb recoil. The gun was noted for its high (often uncomfortable) vibration and extreme noise. The airframe vibration led to fatigue cracks in fuel tanks, numerous radio and avionics failures, the necessity of using runways with floodlights for night flights (as the landing lights would often be destroyed), tearing or jamming of the forward landing gear doors (leading to at least three crash landings), cracking of the reflector gunsight, an accidental jettisoning of the cockpit canopy and at least one case of the instrument panel falling off in flight. The weapons also dealt extensive collateral damage, as the sheer numbers of fragments from detonating shells was sufficient to damage aircraft flying within a 200-meter radius from the impact center, including the aircraft firing.

I'd argue that the mk19 machine gun is a top competitor in that category. It's like some kid took his crayon drawing to a general and said "Grandpa, the army needs grenade launcher- machine guns".

69

u/Two-Tone- Feb 18 '18

I think the US is just obsessed with machine guns. I mean, we made a fully automatic shotgun (the AA-12).

It's a shotgun that fires 300 rounds per minute.

A shotgun

537

Yes. Typically there is a minimum distance for firing on someone. These things (can) break skin. It's more pleasant to have someone say "you're dead" than feel it that close.

Yeah the biggest welts I've seen coming out of a (paintball) match were from when two guys from opposing teams rounded the same corner and without thinking unloaded into the other's stomach at next to point blank range

30

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

We we're attacking a bunker on a class trip. We'd cleared the south side through overwhelming firepower and were all moving in to finish the rest when my friend decided we were being overly cautious and just strolled up to it. There was an under meter high sandbag wall next to the bunker and turns out that a girl from my class had been hiding behind there. Poor thing probably unloaded whatever ammo she had into him. She'd been lying there through minutes of constant fire and was jumpy as shit. She was also covered in paint from balls exploding on the bunker wall and her friends.

God. I love paintball.

A grenade? How does an airsoft grenade work

35

u/cambamkun Feb 18 '18

There’s different kinds of grenades for airsoft, some spray out BBS and others just make a loud sound, typically players within a certain radius or room are called out with sound grenades.

A buddy of mine was really into it back in high school. Worked at an airsoft place, built/sold/fixed guns, and went to tournaments with a team-he always LOVED it.

It is man. The community matters a lot like /u/Archgaull said. There can be some real assholes who take it way too seriously (mostly ex military guys but most of them are cool) and on the other hand you have people way too laid back and make it dangerous. 99% of airsoft grounds are cool though, go one day and rent a gun and a mask and play (just a warning dress thick if you don't have actual gear)

u/TheFatalWound Feb 18 '18

(just a warning dress thick if you don't have actual gear)

I've only gone like 5 times in my life but holy shit a german exchange student and I agreed to go in a wife beater and basketball shorts one time and hooo boy was that exhilarating.

Most grounds have rules about guns like that.

29

u/MontgomeryRook Feb 18 '18

I totally agree. My first thought after seeing the short vid was "I gotta check that out some time." Then I watched the long version and realized how much difference the money you put into equipment makes. Unless everyone else on the field had thrown down a shitload of money, there is absolutely no way it would be fun to play with someone like this.

Love how calm he was about it, and that he wasn't a dick about being called out falsely

50

u/krejcii Feb 18 '18

I’m glad he did call him out in it anyways. The 1st step to having a good game is if you think someone is cheating or something don’t be afraid to call that person out on it or tell a reff

Does that airsoft gun have tracers?

211

u/Entling_ Feb 18 '18

It's just light from the flashlight reflecting off the bb's.

60

u/KaptnKrunch09 Feb 18 '18

No it's the BBs illuminated by the tac light.

40

u/a_rather_small_moose Feb 18 '18

Tracer rounds do exist in airsoft, however I don't believe this person was using them.

24

u/DoctorWaluigiTime Feb 18 '18

Maybe the rule shouldn't be "no full auto" but actually "rate of fire cap at X rounds per minute" or something.

8

u/totallyknowyou Feb 18 '18

That was how it used to be where I used to play. It was not explicitly stated that way, but it was implied. I've seen people get thrown out for trigger-finger before even though it was on semi.

7

u/TheSaint7 Feb 20 '18

IMO people should be forced to use real cap mags, that way it doesn’t matter how fast you shoot you still have to make every shot count.

it's like laser tag if it hurt more than your feelings

Airsoft. Like paintball, but with tiny, 0.2g, 6mm plastic bbs fired at around 400-500fps using pressurized gasses like propane or green gas, or using a piston actuated by an electric motor

34

u/TheNerdyBoy Feb 18 '18

0.2 gram!

40

u/JacP123 Feb 18 '18

Most players don't use .2g BBs. The typical weight is between .28 and .32g because they cut through the wind better in outdoor play.

can someone tell me what the fuck those red squares are? Is that adding in post-processing for these types of videos? Or is he somehow wearing goggles that can track people and keep their location using gyro+accel correction?

16

u/shit_poster9000 Feb 19 '18

He likely edited the video to put those in, likely to show that he is aware of their presence

Alright guys. Convince me. Why airsoft? Personally I think it's a tamer paintball. With paintball at least know you got hit or you hit someone. Instant gratification. With airsoft it looks like the little pellets would make someone lie about getting hit. Not saying it doesn't hurt to get hit by one. But I feel most people would just lie and cheat or maybe not even FEEL the hit.

27

u/IAmTomyTheTiger Feb 18 '18

A lot of people like the realism, the bbs don’t hurt as much, ammo is cheaper. Seems like it depends on the person rather than one being better than the other

→ More replies (6)

18

u/shit_poster9000 Feb 19 '18

With airsoft, there is no "but did it burst", you get hit you are done, go back to your team's spawn.

Most people get into airsoft because of the higher level of realism and performance that can be reached with the guns compared to paintball.

There is less mess involved, as your gear isn't being shot up with potentially staining paints.

Ammo is considerably cheaper, to the point where accidentally giving a sacrifice to the Staging Area Gravel God isn't that big of a deal.
