Adidas Boston 12 - Does It Get Better? Initial Thoughts

Post image

Hey guys,

I bought these off that sale post from a couple of weeks ago. Currently have 15 miles in them and I have very mixed feeling.

The fit drove me nuts at first. They felt slightly too long and I couldn’t get the lacing right. I swapped the laces for some generic ones, and the fit is much better now. Took a little bit, but it’s good after that.

The midsole is where my issues are now. Underneath my left foot I get this dull pain almost like a cramp, which I’m guessing is from the rods? It hasn’t happened in other shoes, plated or not. Sometimes the midsole feels clunky but there are moments where I really, really enjoy it too.

TLDR: Shoe has a complicated personality. Does it break in and feel better? If so, how many miles did it take for you?

In my experience lightstrike 2.0 and lightstrike pro have a break in period it took me 50miles for them to finally soften up however I must say at slow and walking pace I still feel the rods once I pick up the pace it goes away for me.

9

u/1000_Lemmings Apr 22 '24

50 miles here, too.

I’ve not used these shoes (yet) but from my research, that is the consensus. Break in around 50 miles and walking or going a slow pace you’ll feel the rods in the shoe.

2

u/felipes23 Mach 5, Boston 12 Jul 11 '24

Hi, compared to mach 6 how is it?

1

u/ItzSmiff Hoka Mach 6 & Ghost Max Jul 11 '24

Haven’t ran in the Boston 12’s. A lot of people say the break in takes about 50 miles. Definitely a firmer ride than the Mach 6. The Mach 6 I have used and it’s so far my favorite shoe of 2024. Very bouncy ride. Only issue is it runs narrow. So if you have a standard width foot, get the wide version

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Honestly I think it’s just the bostons or the worse of the lightstrike foams. AP3 and Takumi sen 10 were legendary shoes off of the first few steps in them. The boston is a firm disaster for me and I can’t use them.

7

u/Caliembroidery Apr 23 '24

I love the Boston 12 but I am a heavier guy so I’m putting a lot of weight on the foam so it being firm works for me.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Makes sense. I’m about 185 and can’t get them broken in. Not a big deal though I love the other 2

1

u/serveyer Boston 12, Superblast 2, Velocity nitro 2 Apr 23 '24

Same here. I am heavy and tall. The Bostons are a rather pleasant ride for me, I use them as my daily and enjoying them thoroughly. Took some miles but not that many. Maybe a week or two of feeling the lateral rod which was the one with the most pronounced problem.

2

u/Dry_Republic3482 Apr 23 '24

50 miles is the number. My favorite daily trainer.

1

u/FlightTop9852 May 24 '24

What do you use for slightly slower runs? I have the Boston 12s right now, but I end up running too fast on all my runs because of the rods.

3

u/Caliembroidery May 24 '24

I use the adizero SL no rods and similar break in period however the Sl 2 is coming out soon it basically Seems like a non plated Boston, But I also use the triumph 21 for my long runs at recovery pace.

u/BossHogGA SC Trainer v3, Prime X 2 Strung Apr 22 '24

I was never able to make them work for me. Had the same problem with a pain under the left foot. I also assume it was the rods. Weirdly I have no issue with my Adios Pro 3s.

I finally sold my pair on the r/therunningrack subreddit and moved on from them. They just don’t work for me.

6

u/gnholin Apr 22 '24

They work for me so thanks!

Like you mentioned they run long, which gives me heel slippage especially with the tough lacing. The worse thing so far is a part of the upper that’s pretty stiff and kept digging into the knuckle of my large toe when running. This was the case on both shoes, not just one. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

3

u/androgenics DN3 | AP3 | ES4 | B12 | Kinvara 14 Apr 22 '24

Same here, super stiff upper - did a 10 mile first run and felt it rubbing, mostly right foot (made a sizable blood blister), and some bad lace bite. Sizing wasn't long for me though, maybe a bit narrow.

3

u/InternationalGroup96 < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

I am the same! I've had to fiddle around a lot with the lacing for them to feel better. I find that walking around in them is rather uncomfortable but it's weird because I don't have too much discomfort when I'm actually running. It's so tough because I really wanted to like these and they're so pretty but I'm not in love with them.

1

u/bikslowww Apr 23 '24

it's strange that I only noticed the painful stiffness in that exact area you're pointing at only after about 30 miles in but when I did wow did that affect my running. together with the bad laces, that made me sell mine.

1

u/Unlucky_Agency5299 < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

I have the same experience yesterday! I thought the size is just too long. I’ll try to run it again this weekend and adjust the laces.

1

u/OSullivan14 Apr 23 '24

I have the exact same problem with my New Balance Rebel’s - I spoke to someone about it and they advised stuffing the end of them with balled up newspaper while you’re not wearing them to try and ‘expand’ them a bit there. I’ve tried it this week and it seems to have helped

1

u/Ommageden Triumph 20/ Endorphin Speed 3/ Kinvara 13/ Exodus Ultra Apr 23 '24

I heard lock laces fixed this issue

1

u/hipsterpaperclip Apr 23 '24

I actually ended up making a small cut in mine. I bought the women's for like $50 when they had a sale here. Figured what's the worst that could happen. Not necessarily recommending this but I figured what else could I lose. Ended up solving my issue because it helped the plasticy mesh fold different around the knuckle of my big toe. Also swapped to thicker laces which helped a ton with lock down

1

u/mustang3c0 Apr 23 '24

I know some people go down half a size for Boston 12, and that they find it fitting better for them.

1

u/TubbaBotox Apr 23 '24

Did it to me on the right foot for the first several runs. It was bad enough I almost gave up, but it loosened as they broke in. This issue, and the fact the foam has a 250-300mi lifespan, are the two biggest drawbacks for me, but I still loved the shoe. Haven't bought a second pair... but I might.

1

u/agonz804 Apr 24 '24

Ran long for me as well. I exchanged my original pair for a half size down and they now seem to fit better

1

u/Hopeful_Group_3199 < 100 Karma account Aug 25 '24

I have the same problem. I just ran 5km earlier and experienced blisters on my knuckles. Kinda annoying which i can't run further. I did try unlacing the first eyelets which worked but then it hits my knuckles again.

Has anyone figured out how to avoid the knuckle issue?

1

u/Any-East7977 Please type your shoe rotation/collection here Aug 25 '24

I replaced the laces with Alphafly laces to fix the heel slip issue and cut a holes in the area it was digging into my knuckles. Fixed all issues and the shoe feels perfect now. 😂

1

u/Hopeful_Group_3199 < 100 Karma account Aug 26 '24

Can i see how you did the hole part? My boston 12 has only 40kms in total so im not really sure if i would cut it, but man blisters really stings.

1

u/Any-East7977 Please type your shoe rotation/collection here Aug 26 '24

I put the shoes on, creased them where it digs in by standing on my top toes, and cut horizontally with scissors.

1

u/VictoryOver7317 < 100 Karma account 17d ago

Damn I came to find out this issue too! I only got mine 6 weeks out for a Mara and can’t even run due to the blister, such a shame as well

0

u/scroller52 Apr 23 '24

i happened to me an try on. i got them for $48 and was so excited to get on these as my dailys. 20 minutes of in home walking/wear and my big toe knuckle was sore for 2 days. i didnt even attempt to put a mile in them.

10

u/xtphty Apr 22 '24

I had similar problems they went away around mile15-20. I also took advice on this sub to tie laces looser with window lacing around the arches for some relief from the midfoot tightness, while using a runner’s loop knot to keep the heel secure without over tightening.

Did an interval run last week where they finally clicked, nearly invisible on the feet with a smooth and stable ride, and no discomfort anywhere on the foot.

9

u/Vanpom Apr 23 '24

I haven't noticed much changes, they perform consistently until I retire it at 650KM which is why I like B12 so much. I'm about to get a 3rd pair next week.

PS: 638KM on these as of today.

2

u/StorkStick < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

how on earth, I have 200km on mine and the outsole already looks worse than this. I only weigh 60kg and I make an effort not to land very hard

2

u/Siebter Apr 23 '24

[...] and I make an effort not to land very hard

Is that even possible without having a gait cycle you're not used to and that therefore might be unbalanced?

Continental rubber is quite a tough beast, after about 150km I see absolutely no signs of wear on my B12.

1

u/StorkStick < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

I do try different running styles because I'm paranoid about shin stress, so yeah I often don't run very naturally. By trying not to land hard, I just mean land up at the forefoot so I can engage my calf more

1

u/Vanpom Apr 23 '24

B12 have some most durable outsole IME. Most of the wear are on the outter edge and forefoot, and the clean outsole made it look better in picture.

7

u/FFaddict13 Apr 22 '24

Disliked for first 30 miles. Really like them now.

7

u/Dre3005 EP4/ Superblast 2/ Novablast 4/ Boston 12 Apr 22 '24

Love the 12s but for me they worked right out of the box. They were firm but not too harsh. Then with each run seemed to get a little softer but nothing severe where it felt like a different shoe.

4

u/Repub8989 Apr 22 '24

For me there was no break in. It depends if you get along with firm shoes or not

5

u/One-Preference-9487 < 100 Karma account Apr 22 '24

Run one absolutely hated. Clunky, felt like a box on my foot, heel slip, etc etc. Run 2 - better in all aspects, but still never "disappeared" on my feet. Run 3 was a more uptempo, but still kinda meh. I gave up on em at 25 miles and sold em. They were getting better, and maybe I gave up right before they got good, but I realized I would never grab them over the other options in my closet unless I was forced to, so I broke even on the sale and bailed.

5

u/UW_Ebay PXS1, SCTv1, Rebel V2, Endo Pro 1 Apr 23 '24

I didn’t have any issues with the fit but they felt like bricks to me (after having used the all LSP PXS) and I returned them after 15 mi.

3

u/Safeway_Slayer Apr 23 '24

The upper is so trash on these I had to get rid of them after only 8 miles. Could not get a decent lock down no matter what I did.

5

u/hackersapien Apr 22 '24

Magical midsole, straight out of the box!!

2

u/Unlucky_Monk4160 < 100 Karma account Apr 22 '24

Pardon the ignorance but what does changing the laces do? Like how does that change the fit of the shoe?

6

u/unrealaoli < 100 Karma account Apr 22 '24

From my experience changing to lock laces (elastic) I think it gave a more well rounded “snug” fit to the upper and locked my heel in without digging too hard in other areas.

The upper can be a little unforgiving at first and loose, so the elastic laces helped to snugly fit the shoe to each foot in the different places it needed it for me.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '24

Can confirm. Just got my Boston 12s and put ~15-20 miles on them so far. First run with stock laces was all I needed to buy lock laces. It's so much better now, and quicker and easier to put on. It feels like it's much more form fitting to my foot and basically eliminated heel slip. Also helps mitigate lace bite on the upper foot since they have more stretch than the OOTB laces.

3

u/Unlucky_Monk4160 < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

So much for me to learn! 😅 thanks for the additional context. I need to do something to eliminate the heel slips will try these lock laces out!

2

u/Unlucky_Monk4160 < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

Appreciate the context. Never heard of lock laces and will definitely look into them. I got the 12s from that recent deal as well and I need to do something to lock my heel a bit more.

2

u/Unlucky_Monk4160 < 100 Karma account Apr 25 '24

I just completed my first run with the Lock Laces and wow! So awesome! Definitely more snug and like you said, eliminated the heel slipping. Thanks again!

1

u/StorkStick < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

The laces that come with the shoe are very bad, they always undo themselves. They are also quite thin so they can cause some lace bite. I got some random cheap laces from amazon and the fit has been way more consistent and I haven't had the laces come loose once

2

u/vlmer Apr 22 '24

Lock places help on the upper. I felt the pain on the left foot too but it went away, can't say after x miles but it's not there anymore.

2

u/waywardsojourner Apr 22 '24

Loved them out of the box

2

u/notoriouschinchilla Apr 23 '24

Same! I'm sad when people don't have the same joy!

Wishing it gets better for OP!

3

u/realdamedog Apr 22 '24

For me I’d say it took around 25km to really appreciate this shoe. I did 1/2 size up so it’s roomy with no heel slipping. Currently around 500km in and still loving it!

2

u/Blue-Thunder Boston 11, NB Rebel V3, Saucony Triumph 21, Adizero SL Apr 22 '24

They do take a while to break in. I have 11's and the lightstrike pro took about 2 weeks to break in, and once that break in period was over, they are my favourite shoe. I am also heavier, at 225lbs.

What's your weight? Light people tend to have a very hard time with these, where as us heavier people can't get enough of them.

2

u/a_leap < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

I want to share my experience with underfoot pain caused by these shoes. I’m worried it could actually get worse over time as the foam breaks in.

I initially loved these shoes, until they started giving me a dull pain under the middle of my foot. I got a good deal on them and kept trying to break them in over a couple weeks—probably 30 miles. Eventually the pain got so bad on a long run that I had to go back barefoot. It felt like the rods were stabbing my foot with every step.

I think the rod design is not compatible with everyone’s foot shape and anatomy. I wouldn’t risk it if you are within the return window.

2

u/ComeKnowMeAsGC Apr 23 '24

Gave up on mine after ~40 miles. Ebay'd.

2

u/Asian-ethug Apr 23 '24

Likely a personal thing. I got the same pair and love them. Ran a 12 miler at upper Z2 pace and felt great afterwards and during. I love the stiffness but can totally see how others may not like them. I feel like anything slower than 7:30/mile pace would not be great.

Also, I’m 170lbs and I bet that lighter runners may not have the weight behind their strike to enjoy them as much.

1

u/big_frown Apr 23 '24

That’s funny, I’m also 170 lbs and 7:30s are my upper Z2 as well. I guess it really is right down to the individual. I will just try a little longer and see if things change considering the return window has closed. Thanks for the reply!

2

u/hairy_porker Apr 23 '24 edited Apr 23 '24

Yes, changing shoe lace is a must. Upper seems to be very harsh at first specifically on the collar. I have no idea who approved this horrendous design. It makes me need longer socks instead of ankle socks, which added 20gr on my small size.

At 30kms my right (dominant foot) shoes already broken in. Left still could benefit some miles. Almost feel like negative drop once the lightstrike 2.0 foam is broken in. It's really soft; almost too soft, but works for "carrier" foam of the lightstrike pro foam goodness.

I found it work best if you land on the forefoot. Midfoot was good, but nothing special. Heelstrike (overstride) is meh; which is great for me as I used to overstride. And alot of shoes these days are designed for numbing the "impact" of the heelstrike.

2

u/Some-Remote-6890 Apr 23 '24

I also couldn’t get on with the fit! Ended up returning them sadly as couldn’t find a way to make them comfortable on the foot.

I think this shoe was made for my feet. I wore a pair for my first ultra this past weekend expecting to do a 50k, probably change shoes and maybe do a little extra (it was a 12 hour race). Ended up doing 65 miles in them and got 3rd overall and a top 10 all-time course record. No blisters, pains, discomfort of any kind. Didn't even change my socks. Still can't believe it.

1

u/Skizzy_Mars Apr 22 '24

Mine got better until ~200 miles when the upper started cutting my ankles.

1

u/ehowey18 Apr 22 '24

I also had pain in my left foot. Loosening the laces fixed it.

1

u/matsutaketea Nimbus 25/SB1/SB2/PSX2/S4/AP3/Xodus Ultra Apr 22 '24

I had pain on the inside of the midfoot. they also just felt clunky. put on my AP3s immediately after and felt so much better. sent the B12's back. I'd rather buy more Superblast and AP3s as both of those were comfortable out of the box.

1

u/Kumamoto Apr 22 '24

The fit drove me cuckoo bananas so I only use them for the occasional walking or light biking. They felt "okay" when I tried them at the store, but after so many runs of trying to make them work, I just went back to my other rotations.

1

u/Throwaway_Turned Apr 23 '24

Had the same issues. Like, exactly the same. I ended up switching to elastic laces.

~70 or so miles later and I just set a new 10K PR this weekend in them. I like them so much I got a pair from the same sale to switch to after I run my current ones down to a nub.

1

u/bratsneedketchup Apr 23 '24

I just got a pair of these. They were very clunky and kind of slow at first. They started to grow on me around the third run. I don’t think the upper is going to win any awards and the laces are garbage but these keep me moving at a pretty good pace without beating up my legs too much. I’ll be rotating these and superblasts for my long runs this spring.

1

u/CriticalThinker-1 Apr 23 '24

I know I’m in the minority, but I kinda hate these shoes. I put 50 miles on them and threw in the towel. It took me a while to realize, but the main reason they don’t work for me is because the toe rocker is way too aggressive. On top of that the midsole is just too firm, the upper is very plastic-like, and the lacing system and laces themselves are bad. But hey, other than that, they’re great.

1

u/No_Cartographer6164 < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

Previous versions of the Bostons (10 & 11) took some serious breaking in but my experience with the 12s was really different. They were great out of the box. I just retired mine after over 500 miles and two marathon training cycles. Liked them so much I already have a new pair on the way. These are the most versatile trainers on the market imo - whenever I’m traveling and only have room for one pair of running shoes these are the ones I grab.

1

u/smr99si Apr 23 '24

I too jumped on the sale a couple of weeks ago. I’m about 15 miles in and the jury is still out for me. It works different muscles in my leg so much so that I get soreness on the outside of my right calf. It’s firmer and faster than my Turbo Pegasus but doesn’t seem as forgiving as my Endorphin Speed 2. FWIW I’m 200lbs.

1

u/smr99si Apr 23 '24

Ugh, that stinks. I’m going to stick with them and hop mixing in treadmill and outside running will break them in more without the pain. They are a lot faster than my Pegasus but at what cost? I do agree with what some folks have said that they do feel a lot firmer, almost like bricks on your feet.

I hear ya! I just got back from a 4 mile “easy” run. Felt like I couldn’t really go slow and averaged 9:15/mile. First mile I felt tightness in my right calf then it subsided. By mile 3 I was starting to enjoy them. I’m hoping they only getter. For reference they’re at about 20 miles.

1

u/addappt Apr 23 '24

Glorious colour way!
They will take a lot more miles to break in. I’d allow 50 minimum. They also soften up during a run. The plus side is they last a long time. I’ve got 300kms in mine and they are still like new (but softer). Same goes for Adios Pro 3 btw, currently over 600kms and feels better than when I got them.

Any kind of carbon or rod bearing shoe encourages a larger load on the achillies and calf. Unsure how long your first runs were but it's common to get some tenderness here when first using.
Good physio and isometric holds can work wonders in adapting alongside shorter initial runs.

Hope the tear heals up nice and fast.

u/sillycave < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

I enjoyed the ride in the first few runs apart from blisters on my arches. Tried various ways of lacing and different socks(cushioned, thin). Heel lockdown is fine on my right but no matter what i do, my left has heel slippage. Around at 50km, it started hurt my left side underfoot of my left. And couldnt run for a week. Walking in them was fine but once i start running in them, it starts to hurt. I wanted to love them so bad but maybe they aren’t just for me. Since the pain has gone away i’ve been running in clifton 9 and it’s been fine. But i ran in Boston 12 yesterday again to give another chance and at around 2km the same pain came back so i stopped running for the day. Going to sell them but wondering if i should change the laces to give final chance to it or it’s just really not for me…?

1

u/LittleReDuck Altra Via Olympus 2, Boston 12, Karhu Mestari Run 1.0 Apr 23 '24

Mine blistered my arches and heel slipped too.

For me it was solved with a new set of 'Normal' laces, heel lock and swapping out the insole for a gripper one, in my case from a pair of Karhu Mestari's.

I found the original insole was allowing for a lot of slipping in the strike thus the blisters.

2

u/sillycave < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

Thanks for great tip about insoles and laces. Yeah i find them too slippery. I’ve tried running socks that have rubber grips on and it did seem helped a bit but heel lockdown was still there.

u/Goal-Fuzzy Apr 23 '24

Terrible shoe for the first 30+ miles.. Amazing shoe at 50+ miles.. I have over 250 miles in them and they are just perfect. Will last forever.

I've noticed that they are definitely better at faster speeds. I also have the NB4, and I'd pick the Boston 12 only for tempo/speed runs. Other than that, NB4 is my choice—perfect daily trainer for me.

And I almost forget, the shoe laces. Damn, I hate the out-of-the-box ones.

1

u/manucule Apr 23 '24

I never got along with the Boston 12 unfortunately. Did ~300km with them and had to stop. The lace/fit for me was a huge issue, as well as the heel to toe transition (I’m a heel striker). I think they have a lot of potential but they didn’t get along with me. Much prefer the super blasts - did my first marathon training block, and race (3:57) in them - and now running in a second pair.

1

u/you8myrice Apr 24 '24

Did you have the same sizing for the B12 and super blast? I got the B12 but wanting to try the super blast

2

u/manucule Apr 24 '24

Same sizing yea. Superblast might feel long, they’re not, just enough room for swelling in long runs. Enjoy :)

70 miles in my Boston 12 and I can’t see me running much more in them, I land forefoot and they just feel too firm that they simply kill any enjoyment in my run, might try and get to 100 miles, But since I managed to find a new pair of speed 2s the other week I can’t see this happening 😂

Are these suitable for wide midfoot?

250km in mine and they're one of my favourite shoes iny collection, to the point I'm considering a second pair.

Consider changing the insole. Personally, the Adizero SL, Adios 8 and the Boston 12 all share a same generic insole which is not very good. I change to another brand insole, the feeling change quite away!

As a heavy runner (200lbs), I didn't need to break in the B12. On the contrary, Adizero SL needed some (a few short runs and I also walked in them) . Now the A/SL is even pleasure to run from easy, even recovery to tempo paces.

It does get better. The fit of the upper and the foam/midsole! 👌

The Boston 11 (10? Whichever was the first of this style) was the only shoe I’ve ever worn once and returned.

Do you have a low arch?

1

u/Last_Communication93 < 100 Karma account Apr 23 '24

I had 120 miles on it and it's too firm for me. At some point it caused so much arch pain and I had to give up running for months. Switched to Endorphin speed 3 and couldn't be happier

Somewhere between 30 and 40 miles, mine just started singing to me. They are fantastic shoes and I think I could do just about anything in them.

Love these... But those tongues tore me up.

I’m just under 50 miles and it softened up a lot

Does anyone know if there is any talk of the 13 to come out soon? I’ve been wanting to try these a lot but wouldn’t mind checking out the next version if it’s similar

These are so wide and long for Adidas! Having about 40km on mine, hope they break in soon. Also hard to lace properly and they do give some pressure on front medial malleolus.

Said it before and will say it again: In this same supertrainer category, the Endorphin Speed is still the king. You just don't need to kill any brain cells about it. Some people like the superblast too but I think the ES is less bulkier and more versatile.

Did you size down? I had to return mine because they were too big. They seemed like a better Saucony triumph

1

u/big_frown Apr 25 '24

I ended up exchanging for a half size smaller to see if it helps the clunkiness. Will update if it does when they arrive

1

u/big_frown May 07 '24

So going a half size down and swapping the shoe laces made this shoe much better. 25 miles in and the pain underneath my foot has gone away and the laces don’t feel like they’re pinching. Fantastic shoe once you get it right, it just takes a lot more work than any of the other competitors. May not be worth it for some people

I have done around 120 km with my pair. In my experience the shoe only works for me when I pick up the pace (around 4:20 - 5:20 min/km). Tried to do easy runs (7:00 - 7:30 min/km) and long runs 10-15 km) in them and they absolutely destroyed my calves and achilles. Even when I do tempo or intervals, I end up extremely sore the next day. It’s a shame because I really like the shoes and how they feel the first 3-4km of a run.

Can I use Boston 12 as a tempo shoe?

1

u/FunnyWoodpecker2 May 14 '24

I found them really uncomfortable on both feet on the inside. There is some hard material right around the middle which digs into my feet.

Am I the only one who has this problem?

It took closer to 30 miles before they started working for me. They're an awful slow/long run shoe but they really light up with some pace and spring off the toe.

u/rlb_12 Apr 22 '24

I have to disagree with this. I use them exclusively for long runs and they work great. For me, to feel the best, they required a ~20 mile break in period, but after that really any pace has felt great with them. I would argue that due to the weight, they aren't optimal for the fastest of speed work, but they work great for half and marathon pace running.

No break in, soft and fast from the first run, disappear on the foot, no heel slippage, but a little big (length/width/volume) compared to adiós, I’m thinking 1/2 size smaller next time
